That's cool. I'd buy it just to see "The Bird." SQUAAAWK!

they show the Bird on VH1 Classic so damn much. More than any Prince videos, in my experience.

Really? I've never seen it on there. But I've rationed myself only a few hours a week.

Can anyone tell me who is that band performing in the movie singing a song with lyrics that sound something like "Mountaineer, mountaineer/I want to be a mountaineer?" and what is the name of that song?

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:02 (nineteen years ago) link

This is a fantastic DVD (and the first time it has been released anamorphically). I totally rip off Appolonia's basic dance step whenever I go dancing now.

BARMS, Monday, 7 February 2005 12:36 (nineteen years ago) link

hahahaha, maybe he is saying "Mountaineer" but in a very elite "European" accent.. a counterpart to "The Lumberjack Song" if you will.

donut christ (donut), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

hahahhaha@mountaineer.

ppp, Monday, 7 February 2005 18:33 (nineteen years ago) link

There's a cool documentary about First Ave on that DVD as well. IIRC, there are all these out-of-place Minneapolis rockers (like Chris Osgood of Suicide Commandos) talking about playing First Ave. Definitely worth checking out.

subgenius (subgenius), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:56 (nineteen years ago) link

thanks BARMS, I've been saying "mountaineer" for years wondering what the hell kinda metaphor that was...love the synths in that song.

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:06 (nineteen years ago) link

haha "out of place." I worked at First Avenue for two and a half years; those guys were the club, basically. (so was everyone else. that's why it's the greatest fucking club ever.)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:42 (nineteen years ago) link

also, the vids at the end of the DVD get really tedious, because all they do is recycle footage you've already watched. all of them. every damn one (apart from "When Doves Cry" which shows him crawling out of a bathtub yee-hah).

"Purple Rain" at the Brooklyn Academy of Music last night was tremendous!!!

The Time was actually THERE, having just performed in the live performance space at BAM, and strolled in, sans Morris Day, to introduce Purple Rain.

They guy who played Jerome seemed to be particularly het up about something on the prince.org messageboards, and kept circling back to some unspecified beef, all while protesting that he really didn't care that much. ???

When the lights went down, and the blurry Warner Bros logo fetched up there on the screen, all of us, from the knots of white kids at the edges, to the rows of fan club members that had claimed the middle seats early, shouted "turn it up!!! turn up the god damn music!!!" everyone shoutin and singin along to every song. All of it, to me, a revelation all over again. How lucky we are to have this document of arguably the height of a very great musician's powers, at the height of his approbation. In the movie theater, it feels a little like being there for a concert. I sat next to a fan club girl who literally knew every single line, and would say it just BEFORE it happened in the movie. i.e. "I gave Jerome the night off"

aw, I shoulda gone, but I'm a lazy ass and stayed home and watched Broken Flowers.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 29 January 2006 23:30 (eighteen years ago) link

On the big screen, in that environment, the movie itself, the plot, the dialogue, wasn't QUITE as bad as I had remembered. Everything with the Revolution in it was just gold, for instance. And the New Guitar! moment was actually sort of moving.

I want a rip of the version of "Purple Rain" that's supposed to be Wendy and Lisa's rough demo of it. It's the first time you hear it in the movie, and it's all with synths I think?

the compression is not good. the officially released outtakes more than make up for it.

PaulTMA, Friday, 23 June 2017 11:37 (six years ago) link

More or less compressed than the HDTracks remaster?

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 23 June 2017 13:34 (six years ago) link

I'm with PaulTMA

Plus some of these versions of long-available-as-bootlegs unreleased tracks are completely new. And awesome.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Friday, 23 June 2017 13:49 (six years ago) link

I don't mean "new" as in "rerecorded" but as in "no one knew they existed before this rerelease",

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Friday, 23 June 2017 13:50 (six years ago) link

The PR remaster itself is way hotter than the HDTracks which is the best digital version IMHO. The og US vinyl is wonderful - still.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Friday, 23 June 2017 13:51 (six years ago) link

i keep both the HDTracks and the original CD on my MP3 player. Had a downloaded vinyl rip that sounded great but there were skips so fuck that obv.

Needless to say I will be buying the shit out of the new release even if not for the remaster of the album proper

or at night (Jon not Jon), Friday, 23 June 2017 14:48 (six years ago) link

Don't think I've heard PR all the way for nearly 30 years...massive Prince head but I dunno...obviously great but apart from 'When Doves Cry' it doesn't particularly feed my Prince Jones...iforgot how full on it is...it still feels like the outlier in his early catalogue...and the song PR is a fucking dirge...looking forward to listening to unreleased stuff...what I've heard of it so far is amazing

X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Friday, 23 June 2017 18:02 (six years ago) link

I love Purple Rain but agree that it sticks out like a sore thumb in Prince's discography - Prince never really went for mass appeal on that scale again - not even with high profile projects like Batman.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Friday, 23 June 2017 18:07 (six years ago) link

He tried again with "Diamonds & Pearls" which was a pretty slick and commercial production compared to what came before. "Batman" , "Graffiti Bridge" sounded positively claustrophobic and weird compared to stuff like "Cream".

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 24 June 2017 00:12 (six years ago) link

I also never had the love for PR (really never cared for the title tune either) but "When Doves Cry" and "The Beautiful Ones" are sublime.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 24 June 2017 00:13 (six years ago) link

giving it a first listen, holy fuck "love and sex". i may not actually be alive by the end of the 10 minute "we can fuck", just giving y'all that warning up front. if i never post again this shit is so good it literally killed me.

Diamonds & Pearls was totally a calculated "comeback" album p much the only time he specially seemed to be trying to move units. Was super popular then pretty much forgotten it seems, though the holographic CD cover must've cut into the profit margin

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 24 June 2017 05:43 (six years ago) link

Diamonds & Pearls still felt smaller in scale than Purple Rain, though.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Saturday, 24 June 2017 12:47 (six years ago) link

We need to look a bit at the wider picture here too -- granted it's the jewel in the crown of the Warner years in terms of money so of course it would get the primary reissue. Even so, we ended up with a three CD/one DVD package for $25 (which puts a LOT of those super deluxe editions to shame right there), the outtakes were remastered by the guy who did the original mastering for the album to start with, Bernie Grundman, and -- something I haven't seen many people talk about! -- stellar liner notes. You've got Susan Rogers doing the main essay, plus a song by song breakdown of the main album by all the members of the Revolution, not to mention a quick note from his tour photographer from the time along with some archival photos. I mean, not to put too fine a point on it, but if they could maintain this general model for the rest of the reissues, especially the 70s/80s years -- and there's no reason why said model wouldn't work (album/outtakes disc/single and extended edits/video or concert film) -- then goddamn.

i will never understand "purple rain (song) is boring/dirge/etc". i mean, on the surface i guess i understand since it's long & simple & repetitive.
but, like
i mean
they are taking you to mfing CHURCH!!!
i love it & it makes me ugly-cry so hard. i love it now even more after reading the band's liner notes where they say that it was one of their few pure collaborations where they each contributed something to the creation of the song & that made it pretty meaningful for them. i think it shows.

Christ, the version of 'We Can Fuck' on this rules so much - far better than any other version I've heard, including the version on Graffiti Bridge - it's also great to have the full version of 'Computer Blue' in decent sound quality (thinking about substituting it for the edited version on the album itself whenever I play Purple Rain) - also 'Wonderful Ass' and 'Father's Song' both rule... I agree that 'The Dance Electric' runs a little too long, but otherwise I'm pleased with the stuff on this.

"Velvet Kitty" is like the missing link between pub rock and Kraftwerk

"Possessed" is a really excellent "tracky" track, it reminds me of Tuomas asking about whether Prince ever did straight up house songs. It's not a straight-up house song but it's getting there.

That DRUM SOUND and that slightly slower than house tempo it is just PAVLOVIAN with me and SO MANY of these songs have it!!

"Our Destiny / Roadhouse Garden" sublime, I keep rewinding

And agreed, Hallway mix of Computer Blue a universe devastator, can imagine a club like Optimo going absolutely mental to a full playout of it

Tracer otm, the sound of this band at this time, those drums, those saturated oberheim poly pads + piano, the guitar obv and the way his voice sounds with Lisa's and Wendy's, it's just the best place for my ears, I could stay forever like tamlin in fairy land

or at night (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:24 (six years ago) link

It must have been brutal for Prince to edit down 'Computer Blue' from 12 minutes down to the 4-5 minutes that it is on the LP, now that the full version is available in great quality, it makes the album version completely redundant and makes it feel incomplete.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:26 (six years ago) link

"Heaven" is another amazing PR era track they could've put on here as well. Not a huge fan of "Velvet Kitty Cat" and "Love and Sex". They're sort of doodles as opposed to some of the other things from the era they could have dug up and put on there. "Possessed", "Purple Music", "Heaven" and the rest on one cd would have been insane. Alas...

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:32 (six years ago) link

or at night (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:34 (six years ago) link

I think the entire package is presented as something "new" for listeners. I doubt the record co. is thinking of the diehard Prince freaks over your average music listener when compiling a set like this.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:37 (six years ago) link

It's ok, Alfred.

I dunno. I mean -- they certainly did do that - and bless 'em. But it's not as dope as the tracks I mentioned. I think most fellow Prince freaks would agree.

They are probably going for the nostalgia factor in getting this to older listeners as well as the newcomers who may have only recently been turned on to Prince.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:40 (six years ago) link

I dunno, Jay Vee, let's not get too far down a road where there's some sort of comprehensive pristine-sound release of all the rarities from 86-87 and the response is "No "Wally"? FAIL."

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:52 (six years ago) link

There's so many Prince rarities I really love that are just a little too late to fit into a Purple Rain timeframe and too early to fit into a SOTT timeframe (which I think is the most likely other album to get a treatment like this)

I hope we get em somehow

or at night (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:55 (six years ago) link

I'm not too fussed about hearing any rarities from 1990 onwards, but I'd be all over a mammoth box set of stuff from the vault from 1980-1989 - although I suspect that even a box set would be too limiting - it'd have to be a series of releases.

i got into prince so late that about the first thing i heard of his was "the work", so i've always thought of the purple rain version of "computer blue" as sort of "impressions of computer blue" or something along those lines. kind of impressive how much of the song he packed into those four minutes, but you can't not do damage to the song by editing it that deeply.

"the dance electric"... ok, 12 minutes is maybe a little much, but the 4 minutes on the andre cymone version is not enough! a good 8 minute edit would rule the universe. apocalyptic funk jams are one of my favorite things prince did. even at 4 minutes should have been a hit, along with "neon telephone" and "yo mister".

"love and sex" reminds me of "sexual suicide", which is one of my favorite prince songs, so yeah i dig it. how many of the songs prince shortlisted for "crystal ball ii" are out there by now?

"our destiny/roadhouse garden" kind of a disappointment to me compared to the first ave 84 version. i'm sure one day they'll put out that show legit, as well they should.

"velvet kitty cat" and "katrina's paper dolls" are great because they're so clearly unfinished outtakes - we get to hear something in the middle of being written, if only because he never polished it off for whatever reason. because of the way prince worked he doesn't have a lot of what one could really call "demos". even as half-thought-out throwaways they're world-beaters.

reading about things on the prince forums they are very grouchy and disappointed, which does surprise me because it's a whole cd of fantastic tracks, some of which have never been heard before, that absolutely stand up in quality to purple rain itself. i guess things can always be better but man just wait for the 6 cd 35th anniversary deluxe box set and it'll be out there. purple music (which i always lump together in my head for some reason with the long early version of "around the world in a day") is a great song, but i don't need everything all at once.

(my favorite version of "purple music" is the 5:41 version with different vocals from the boot "for all the purple people" mislabelled "forever in my life", which i think one of the serious prince heads tipped the board to a couple years ago. still don't know anything about it, when it's from or anything like that but it's so good!)

I really like the "unreleased" tracks and the idea that it's a kind of lost Purple Rain era album but I find surprising that they don't really sound like things on Purple Rain (except "Computer Blue", of course).
More like 1999 era tracks or even Parade era.

Album version of Andre Cymone's Dance Electric is 5:31, which nails it IMO.

I'm beginning to wonder just exactly how much of his life he actually spent in the recording studio... the guy seems to have been either writing, recording, playing or touring and I'm surprised he managed to make time for anything else!

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Wednesday, 26 July 2017 07:15 (six years ago) link

one of my favorite parts of the sheila e book was when she described what it was like when she and prince hung out. she had built a little studio in her room and they would basically just hang in there and make music and then occasionally leave to do other stuff that friends do, like go get ice cream. being friends with prince sounded idyllic.

I can't get over Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden. I always want to listen to it twice if I listen to it once.

I remember an interview from someone in his entourage saying that they were taking a domestic flight and he was working on something/writing during the whole flight then when they arrived he rushed to a studio and started recording what he had been working on the plane : it was like 10 songs for sign O the times !

I found download links for BFTP 4 and 5, I think. Download is still in progress but looks like MP3 judging by the size of the zip. Without killing the golden goose, there is an easily searchable Prince google group where people upload all manner of things. The name of the google group is the three letter initialization of Prince's second-best band, suffixed by a basic mathematical symbol which resembles a cross.
