Also following live, just didn't want to interrupt the flow.

"Groovejet" is a lot lower than I thought it would have been.

-- Dom Passantino (juror...), January 23rd, 2005.

For those of us following live, let us discuss here without clutter!

Jole, Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll kick off proceedings by expressing how glad I am to see "Hit me with your rhythm stick" get a mention!

Jole, Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I voted for "Without You"! Didn't Nilsson die on the day Mariah released her, ahem, "interpretation", or is that just urban myth?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Mariah's version better than Nilsson's, so there. (I didn't vote for either, mind.)

Very pleased to see Tori in there!

How is "Vogue" not in the top ten? Surely the Madge vote-split can't have affected it this much?

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"99 Red Balloons" is the first "OMGWTFTOOLOW" pick.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

If the highest Madonna pick isn't "Like A Prayer", then this webpage really is overrun with Zionists.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Nilsson died January 15, 1994. Dunno when Mariah's without you was released.

Jole, Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"Into The Groove" surely will be higher... (xpost)

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"Waterloo" definitely too low.

Jole, Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Any predictions for wonderwall?

Jole, Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

WHAT THE FUCK ARE OASIS DOING AHEAD OF "99 RED BALLOONS" AND "VOGUE"

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Prdeictions for top 10?

1. Into the groove - Madonna
2. Don't you want me - Human League
3. Like a prayer - Madonna
4. Toxic - Britney Spears
5. Firestarter - Prodigy
6, Ghost town - Specials
7. Uptown top ranking - Althia & Donna
8. Dancing queen - Abba
9. She loves you - Beatles
10. Town called malice - Jam

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm already kicking myself because I didn't vote for:

Video Killed the Radio Star (I didn't see it on the list FUCK FUCK FUCK)
Theme From S'Express (I don't like it so much these days, but it probably deserved a nostalgia vote)
Nothing by Madonna (???!!!???)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF voted for the Clash, what a wretched song.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

More :

The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Any More (fucking hell how did I miss this stuff ok I'll stop now)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm A Believer - The Monkees

...and the running count of sings later desecrated by smashmouth moves to 1.

Jole, Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

obviously "songs" or "singles"... not "sings"

Jole, Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

9. She loves you - Beatles
10. Town called malice - Jam

Haha the jinx was on, both are outside the top 50!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess the Beatles vote is seriously split with 7 entries so far, interesting to see if Abba or Madonna suffer the same way.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

So what was Maggie's second favourite song of all time then?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck tha Police - NWA

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

3. Like a prayer - Madonna
Bites the prediction-jinx dust!

Jole, Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

omg

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

As has "Toxic"!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"Toxic" at 53!!!! I'm starting to get very worried.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm highly confident about the other 6!

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagined vote-splitting would have some effect, but I didn't think it would KILL some songs stone dead!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

er, 5.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha yes "Firestarter" is now dead too.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

(side issue - why do people prefer "Firestarter" to "Breathe" again?)

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I predict "Atomic" will be number 1. I've had this weird hunch all week. Yeah, "Breathe" is just "Firestarter" done better, isn't it?

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

And "Breathe" had that awesome twanging riff all the way through, and it's better to dance to, and it spawned "Graffiti My Soul" by Girls Aloud.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"Smack My Bitch Up" >> "Firestarter" >> "Breathe"

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

White Town at only #45? That was my wildcard pick for a top five place.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought "Stan" would be higher, too.

I'll agree with "Smack My Bitch Up" but "Firestarter" is a one trick novelty next to "Breathe".

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Heart of glass will be higher than Atomic, prob top 10, not that my form's too good. I'd guess Bo Rap is going to be top 10 too.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I will storm off ILM in a hissy fit if "Bohemian Rhapsody" is Top 10.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"Stan" is one of those songs everyone says is the greatest song ever &c, but when it comes down to it they actually like loads of other songs better: I thought it'd be in my top 10 but it ended up in the 40s.

I'd also be interested to see how many non-Brits voted, and how that affected it. I thought quite a few would, which would have benefited eg Madonna and "Ignition", but worked against White Town...

NO BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY. NO. NOT ALLOWED.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Britney's still got 3 shots. She'll be Top 10 somehow, I think. Also Abba. I had "Stan" at 14.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

THUNDERBOLT OF LIGHTNING, VERY VERY FRIGHTENING!

Jole, Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Re Brit - four shots surely? Baby One More Time, Born To Make You Happy, Oops!..., Everytime.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, "Bo Rap" voters, like child molesters, should be named and shamed.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Forgot "Every Time". I voted "Born To Make You Happy" number 1, but to be honest I'll be surprised if that charts now. The big question is if the vote will split between "Baby" and "Oops".

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I though "It's A Sin" would be higher than 36...

PSB had fucking better have at least one top ten placing.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"Space Oddity" only 37. That makes me sad.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

34!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wow I'd forgotten about her hair on that cover. 34!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a sneaky feeling that Wuthering Heights will be top 3.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm almost scared for the Top 10 now.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I think we really need to look for songs which won't have any split voting going on for top 5: Wuthering Heights, yes, and I suspect All The Things She Said will be very high too...

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

but 34?

Jole, Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"Wuthering Heights" and "Ignition (Remix)" are really going to feel the benefit from the lack of a split vote (because I doubt the rest of the poll is going to shine light on "I Believe I Can Fly")

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops. "Band of Gold" and "Night Fever" for Top 10.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Feel Love" for number one surely? "O Superman" in the top 10 i hope.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't be surprised if vote splitting had killed the Spice Girls' chances at the top 100 altogether.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Bohemian Rhapsody" still 970 places too high.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Geno" being higher than "Come On Eileen" surprises me, but it's definitely the right result.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god I've just had an awful premonition, even worse than visions of Bohemian Rhapsody in the top 10:

Dry Your Eyes. No vote-splitting.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost: O Superman wasn't a UK Number One.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just had a brilliant premonition. COME ON YOU VILLAGE PEOPLE!!!!!

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Is "Freak Like Me" really better than "99 Luftbaloons"

Jole, Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

It's better than the English translation.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair call.

Jole, Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I Feel Love -- it was my #1 and I do think it will be top 5
Dancing Queen also looks like a top 5 lock.
No way will the Spice Girls be shut out.

Why was "Under Pressure" finishing so high such a surprise? It's easily the best Queen song!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Band of Gold was my number 1. Nice to see it reasonably high.

Richard C (avoid80), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

More stuff that I would expect to see

The Model
Billie Jean
Nothing Compares 2 U
World in Motion (not their best single, but it's their only #1 and there are a lot of New Order fans here)
Heart of Glass ?
Has Mr. Tambourine Man shown up yet?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

There's going to be no Take That in this poll either.

Actually, fuck it, The Model/Computer Love for #1.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing Compares 2 U did really surprisingly well on the 90s poll; I think it'll be top 10 here.

Matt did you get my email?

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

OK. Prediction time for top fives, all.

1. I Feel Love
2. Ghost Town
3. Billie Jean
4. Wuthering Heights
5. Atomic

davidsim (davidsim), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

We haven't had Uptown Top Ranking yet, have we? That should be in the top 10.

Richard C (avoid80), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it'll be top 10 here

or, y'know, top 17.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

1 i feel love
2 the model
3 billie jean
4 nothing compares
5 heart of glass

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Jinx, Richard!

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

ha well nothing compares is gone

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Uptown too.

Yes Sir I Can Boogie for top 10?

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the rest of the list might be composed of universally well-regarded songs!
/optimist

Jole, Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Wuthering heights
2. Into the groove
3. I feel love
4. ghost town
5. heart of glass

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

We haven't had Uptown Top Ranking yet, have we? That should be in the top 10.

Number 16. Fair enough.
xpost

Richard C (avoid80), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

People hold "Atomic" in higher regard than "Heart of Glass"? This is a Trainspotting thing, isn't it? :)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

This top 10 is going to be weirdly skewed.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

14!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"Atomic" only 13!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never even heard of Freda Payne. Or George McRae for that matter.

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

How is Ignition (remix) the most higly regarded of the 00s pop canon?! Compared to Freak Like Me, All The Things She Said, Crazy In Love et al.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Because it's better than those three songs!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the love for Ignition on here baffles.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom, it is NOT better than those three songs.

No other PSB so far...

I am pessimistic re: Spice Girls.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

DON'T YOU WANT ME AND DANCING QUEEN ONLY 12 AND 11 RESPECTIVELY

eek

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

west end girls mudt figure surely .

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

(Lex - email returned)

Always On My Mind as well, possibly.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Top three's gonna be "Ghost Town", "I Feel Love", and "Wuthering Heights", innit?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

How is Ignition (remix) the most higly regarded of the 00s pop canon?!
The Stylus posse have spoken?

xpost
TWO PSB songs in the top 10? It's looking like it right now.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

(cheers Matt)

I have never heard Ghost Town...

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Always On My Mind: I always think of the Willie Nelson version when I think of this song.

jole, Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't realise people liked "wuthering Heights" so much.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

TWO PSB songs in the top 10? It's looking like it right now.

it has ensued! and I am happy.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Nobody's predicting anything for Good Vibrations, but it was my no.1

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd forgotten all about Tainted Love. Of course that was going to be high up.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Still no other Britney...

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

er...

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Vote-splitting killed the Spice Girls' singles chances in the 90's poll too.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Feel Love" in not-#1 shocker!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never heard EITHER the No 1 or No 2!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 January 2005 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Nobody's predicting anything for Good Vibrations, but it was my no.1

Woo-hoo!

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Sunday, 23 January 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahhhh. Restores my faith in ilx.

harveyw (harveyw), Sunday, 23 January 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

No Spice Girls -- BOOOOOOOOO ... but regardless, this was a damned good list. Thanks Mike!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 23 January 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I am shocked that "Good Vibrations" won this. It's so unlikely-ly obvious.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that was pretty cool.

I'm a little shocked over "Block Rockin' Beats" making it but not "Setting Sun". Do people really prefer the former?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 23 January 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Setting Sun came at #126, with 151 points, 6 votes and 1 first place.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Sunday, 23 January 2005 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Wonderwall" didn't make the top 200!

I cast the only vote for Westlife -- and I'm not British! (that either makes no sense or it makes perfect sense, I'm not sure which)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 23 January 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

that's 'cos wonderwall wasn't a number one

elwisty, Sunday, 23 January 2005 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, it's shite.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Most of my list appears to have bombed.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 23 January 2005 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Most of my heroes ain't appeared on no stamp.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Baccara definitely didn't.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 23 January 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I know :( And I placed them 2nd. There was not much disco love in this poll.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 23 January 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Poor old John Leyton didn't even go top 200.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 23 January 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Going Underground would be a firm fvavourite.

Bumfluff, Sunday, 23 January 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there any one place where I can find all the polls that ILM has done? I figured they'd be under the "Lists" category, but no. Would it be unbecoming of me or someone else to create a thread listing all such polls for easy reference?

Brian?, Monday, 24 January 2005 06:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I should have bigged up "Mouldy old dough" somewhere before...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 24 January 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Brian i think i would like that too - perhaps i shall attempt to track them all down and publish a separate webpage listing them all

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 24 January 2005 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)
