Anyone know anything about this GPM023 "Full Body Workout" a double vinyl apparently??? It says on the website it was released on the 17th.

Mysterious! Exciting!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I saw something about this and got all short of breath too.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't it a new compilation? I vaguely remembering reading about it somewhere.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah it's a compilation but vinyl only I think.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard the same thing

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It just dawned on me that the excellent "Just Us" mixes on the I Don't Know Remixes 12" are by Justus Koehncke.

Feel free to smack me.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Andy where have you been?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha Andy!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Justus's album is the only reason to get out of bed in January.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear Justus more Imagination samples plz

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 25 November 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i am psyched!

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 25 November 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

There goes my salary!

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 25 November 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder are there any plans for a Chelonis R Jones album. Or in fact a Justus album with Chelonis on vocals/lyrics would be incredible.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 25 November 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

microhouse SUPERGROUP,

They would *have* to be called CLICK-CLICK.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 25 November 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 25 November 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Appearing on stage with their cover of namesake Wu Tang Clan track, 'Click Click (Be Careful), supergroup CLICK-CLICK took stadium microhouse to THE NEXT LEVEL. Special guests included Morris Day and Roger from Xapp!"

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 25 November 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

There is a M.A.N.D.Y. interview here that mentions they are planning on releasing a Chelonis album.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

that'd be amazing!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
just noticed on the Get Physical site: they will be hosting a night at Fabric on April 16th with DJ T and M.A.N.D.Y. - to be confirmed...

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Hooray!

.adam (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I could go. I wish stuff like this actually happened in SF. :(

.adam (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

aw dude i'm jealous!

that interview is totally sweet:

Q: Perhaps something to help readers get their heads around it...what does M.A.N.D.Y stand for? Anything special or is it one of those in-label and studio jokes?

A: At the beginning we invented crazy stories about a girl called Mandy, but to be honest the name just came up and we thought it’s better than our real names. It was quite funny at the beginning when club promoters were expecting a hot babe to turn up and instead of two ugly boys.

aw i love them!

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I've booked nothing but I am not missing them for the world!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Will this be the event that Ronan and I finally meet at?

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
it could well be dude!

So then "Full Body Workout", what's the verdict?

Still taking it in, but first impressions, the Ralph Lawson remix is seriously great, like Voodoo Ray gone Italo.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"Mind Games, "Eyes Need Sugar" and "The Dude" also recommended. I'm not so hot on the rest.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Has it been released? Or leaked?

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Both.

like Voodoo Ray gone Italo

I was thinking more like instrumental New Order gone Soft Cell as produced by Black Strobe...

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan, post something else on your blog!!

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

it's still far ahead but i'll come to the Fabric thing fosho

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I am going to blog again, starting tonight, new years resolution. was thinking mp3 blog maybe!

I found it on slsk Adam, so it should be ok. That Lawson remix is killing me, played it about 20 times last night!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

So, we all know that DJ T track that samples the main riff from "Hypnotic Tango."

But I had no idea the main synth hook from MANDY's "Don't Stop" is sampled from an old Italo song "Check-Out Five" by Naif Orchestra. It was released in '85 on the Fuzz Dance EP, which also contained "Problemes D'Amour."

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Get physical tonight
The world´s alive
Get physical in the light
This is our time
Get physical tonight
We´re riding high
Get physical in the light
Going out - feel alright
It´s a magical night

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

what's that from Michael?

the DJ T track on Mood Music is really good, the A-Side mainly.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
Fabric last night - it took the piss how good it was. M.A.N.D.Y was all kinds of clicky intricate goodness with catastrophic basslines, Booka Shade live was one of the best live acts I've ever seen in a club, and DJ T played a whole set of stuff that sounded like his own tunes, even tho the only one i recognised was Time Out. the whole place was a mess of limbs and hips and grins. Get Physical indeed. they're back at The End in June, fans!

pete b. (pete b.), Sunday, 17 April 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

there was one fantastic thing he played with a very DJ T-ish, except menacing, bassline, and a voice going 'ecstasy' over and over...what was it?

pete b. (pete b.), Sunday, 17 April 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

AAARGH

I was so gonna go but I passed out in Lewisham instead!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 17 April 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
what a fool i was!

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What's inspired this particular Damascan conversion strongo?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i finally heard the get physical mix

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(i can honestly say that if i heard this plus a clutch of singles, i wouldn't have been so down on 'lectro-house at the end of last year)

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Were there any specific records that you were basing yr pessimism on at the time? I'd be interested to know...

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i really didn't (and still don't) like any of the smagghe mixes. the mix disc portion of misch masch also kinda flew right over my head. also, i am a crank.

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I pretty much agree on Misch Masch actually - though the remixes are great obv.

I think Suck My Deck is very dependent on context, sometimes I find it sounds awesome and sometimes it does nothing for me. I always enjoy Death Disco though - I found it odd how you were saying that it was super-dry and technical etc. (that was what you were saying yeah?) but then I guess I focus more on stuff like the Paul Rutherford track and "TV Night" (one of the most amazing combinations in a DJ mix that i can think of) than say the Sweet Exorcist edit.

Jess did you ever download those Matt Coleridge mixes?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I still don't like any of Misch Masch. About the only Tiefschwarz I like is "Ghosttrack".

The Smagghe mixes are great!

the black hand, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Basically, I like anything to do with Black Strobe.

the black hand, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Adam I'm still confused by your non-love for the Tiefschwarz remixes. Not even the one of Lopazz's "Blood"? Or "Feels Like Love"??

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

there anywhere a young soulseek-less chap could hear this stuff? adam tried telling me about this stuff long time ago but i haven't found it anywhere.

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

There's some Booka Shade tracks on one of the mixes I've linked to above Jaxon!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i actually just noticed that. there was a cross post in action. downloading currently

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't listened to death disco since the start of this year, so maybe i should go back and see if my opinion has changed since i've become a bit more open to this sort of thing. the whole teleology of electro-house bugs me a bit, still, but on a pure sonic level i am really enjoying quite a bit of it. (also, i guess i shouldn't bag on white people for being white as much as i do.)

no, i don't think i downloaded them! i'm supposed to be reviewing that rebel futurism thing you told me to get for pitchfork this week as well, and i still haven't heard it. (downloading it as we speak, actually.) sadly, there's just never enough time in a week for me to get everything in that i want to listen to. (though i don't miss being broke[r], i do miss the amount of free listening time freelancing gave me for those two years. i wonder how often my crankiness regarding certain things is down to disliking the little i've heard and not having the time to bother tracking down more. still being on dial-up at home can't help either. [crazed conspiracy theories about genres i've barely had time to explore are sure to follow shortly therafter.])

x-post: the irony is that i got the chemical sweet girl ep and loved it.

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i also love how i am once again finally getting into something once it's been declared passe.

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"haha i also love how i am once again finally getting into something once it's been declared passe."

Strongo this is standard practice for the rest of us.

I don't think Get Physical/Booka Shade & Friends are passe though. Their sound is sort of morphing quite radically though (or at least it appears radical given how consistent the sound of their earlier stuff is), and I guess there's the sense that by being part of the new reassertion of "micro" allegiances in electro-house they might lose their distinctiveness slightly - or at least have to compete directly with all the other great practitioners in this area (Alex Smoke, Border Community, Villalobos, Luciano, Bucci etc. etc.)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i am just noticing the usual grumblings in the dance mags once something sells more than a thousand copies.

(wasn't ewan pearson bitching about "tiefschwarz-alikes" not too long ago?)

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha yes but the irony was that 12 months before there was a wave of Pearson-alikes!

I guess though that there's a certain type of electro-house DJ/club night that will cleave very closely to an approximation of the sound Tiefschwarz established in their remixes - sorta the same clubs/DJs/dancers who used to rock "I'm So Crazy" and "Where's Your Head At" and stuff on Subliminal.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

here's a couple mixes i made, the first one more electrohouse with lots of get physical/dj t stuff and the second a bit techier. a little overlap (if it works, it works, y'know) but i don't think y'all will mind. enjoy.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Found the Get Physical mix at Tower last night for some obscene amount of money. This better be great.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 06:24 (twenty-one years ago)

It is!

First Jess, now if Matos likes this soon the world will be ours.

I love the Smagghe mixes too, to back to the upthread discussion. But I can see Jess's point about Death Disco, there are some parts which are less electrohouse than just bleep. It is very very dark, even by Smagghe's standards. How To Kill The DJ Part One actually has alot of funkier more uptempo stuff, still a great mix that one.

I think Black Strobe's Essential Mix is probably better than all the Smagghe mixes though.

Also I think Tim otm about Get Physical's current position, if they do continue to plough a different, more minimal, furrow, then they have alot of competition, and of course risk being swallowed up a bit.

Mind you I think the new "Body Language" mix is great, probably prefer it to Rebel Futurism 2, contrary to Tim's opinion I think.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 06:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought this was olivia newton-john thread...

john farrar, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to the same place I picked up the anniversary mix CD promo for next to nothing and walked away with the same deal on the Booka album! I like it a bit so far and it reiterates to me that overall, GP are still the only electro house label worth bothering with.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

No mention yet of the Ada remix of "Vertigo vs Cha!"? Cos it's incredible. Takes a while to grow on you, then POW!

Takes minimal + riff-lectro-house and adds extra "electro" in the more traditional sense for a super-doomy trippy feel.

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't it pretty much the only label that's pure electrohouse?

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i've been queueing for 'boogie playground' on slsk for about three days now. anyone heard it?

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

GP are still the only electro house label worth bothering with.

If you like the Booka Shade album, you really shouldn't keep telling yourself the above.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, for consistency, sure. The only other folks I care about right now are Crosstown Rebels (who are next best IMO), and perhaps the odd Output record. For actual thrills and spills, who else is there?

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you mean Crosstown Rebels mix CDs?

Cos the actual label is probably the most patchy of all the big electrohouse labels for me.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

No, because I haven't gotten round to the CDs yet. Singles-wise, though, they get me going, but in more of a 50/50 split way. Like, if I was Jacques, I'd've used one of their other tracks instead of 'S&M' on the Fabric mix. OTOH, Kiki and Silversurfer are pretty cool.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Now, wo ist der Liebe fur M.A.N.D.Y's "Jah", bitches!

Omar (Omar), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"Mind you I think the new "Body Language" mix is great, probably prefer it to Rebel Futurism 2, contrary to Tim's opinion I think. "

To be fair I haven't listened to Body Language an awful lot yet.

Rebel Futurism 12 inches of note at the moment: the Pier Bucci EP, the "Safari" Remixes EP, the split twelve of John Spring and the Kiki & Silversurfer mix of "Safari" (which is better even than the Alex Smoke Mix)...

"Isn't it pretty much the only label that's pure electrohouse?"

I'd put Systematic and almost all Sub-Static and Poker Flat in this category too.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

tim, i started listening to the mix you linked to upthread and was sorta ho hum on it. i guess what adam told me that made me so interested in the GP label was he said it was minimal stuff with a Prince like singer (chelonis) on top.

heywood jablomi, aren't you in SF? where are you picking up these releases? i've asked around to a few techno stores in the area and they have no idea what i'm talking about. do you know if the Get Physical comp is sold anywhere?

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

tweekin carries a lot of it - ask guthrie for stock updates.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

awesome. they have the Mixed by M.A.N.D.Y. for 20 bucks. should i fork out the dough? are there at least a few vocal tracks?

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

we're getting more and more at amoeba these days. it's worth a look.
also got the 'body language' cd at amoeba - i think it's 21.99.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

and ditto on tweekin'. that's the spot.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Cos the actual label is probably the most patchy of all the big electrohouse labels for me.

word!

not to get into genre facism but isn't poker flat more tech house?

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

we're getting more and more at amoeba these days. it's worth a look.

do you work there? i'm sure i know who you are (i'm there so fucking much) and i bet you'd recognize me

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

>i bet you'd recognize me
likewise...:)
just go to the electronica section, i'm there, always.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

not to get into genre facism but isn't poker flat more tech house?

zactly. Most of Poker flat shit isn't really full on bass riffs and woozy synth biz. get Physical is only label i can think of that releases nothing BUT lectrohouse.

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

>i bet you'd recognize me
likewise...:)
just go to the electronica section, i'm there, always.

you still didn't answer my question. do you work there? are you the really tall light skinned black guy?

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

because i'm not walking into amoeba screaming HEYWOOD JABLOMI. i fell for that trick last time i tried to find you at milk

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

More importantly Heywood, are you or anyone else playing this stuff out anywhere regularly over the next month? Please help me ease the pain of not going to Sonar!!! (notice that I don't ask the same of Philip because I know he is going to Barca and has all the beach party hookups)

the black hand, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

adam, are you in sf or SoCal... can't remember? is there one adam here and aother up there?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i love this mix: get physical but dont like the body language mix! it seems to start of really weakly i think! like really quiet and nothingmuch. picks up a bit in tghe middle. maybe i need to listen again. the tracklisting looks good, but as a mix, it doesnt deliver what i want from get physical. big destruoying basslines, monjlithic kicks, dont-fuck-with-us-just-DANCE feel. it seems polite, like a smattering of applause.

whats the full body workout like?

and whats this?
sugababes (m.a.n.d.y mix?!?!)

ps GPM fans, m.a.n.d.y plays basics in leeds on sat 4th june

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i think my messages make no sense because i am tired or possibly i have a brain parasite. i wasn't asking you if you couldn't remember, just so that's clear.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

firstworldman, I am a San Franciscan by day and a denizen of the East Bay by night and a Londoner in my heart.

the black hand, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i do work at amoeba.
i am not the tall light-skinned black guy (don't even know who that is really...)
this is amoeba SF btw.
and you can call me mike.

is nobody checking out my mixes that were posted upthread?

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

im rinsing out yr bandwidth and getting both of em

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I am listening to them now!

the black hand, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i had heaps of trouble getting a hold of the get physical comp over here in australia but i got it last night so i thought i'd share it, hope this works, it's the first time i've used yousendit:

limited time only.

Yikes, you weren't kidding....

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 26 May 2005 06:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"tim, i started listening to the mix you linked to upthread and was sorta ho hum on it. i guess what adam told me that made me so interested in the GP label was he said it was minimal stuff with a Prince like singer (chelonis) on top. "

Jaxon you should know that the Chelonis R Jones stuff is only a fraction of the label's output; most Get Physical stuff is instrumental.

"zactly. Most of Poker flat shit isn't really full on bass riffs and woozy synth biz. get Physical is only label i can think of that releases nothing BUT lectrohouse."

I think a lot of it's pretty close, especially since '02. Steve Bug's Sensual album was as I recall very Get Physical-ish, although I sold it in a moment of abject poverty so now I can't be sure.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 26 May 2005 06:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, this DJ T record seems to follow along with the minimal vibe that GPM has been doing lately.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 26 May 2005 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess what adam told me that made me so interested in the GP label was he said it was minimal stuff with a Prince like singer (chelonis) on top.

This is a heartfelt minor derailment, but you should check out a new UK single called '16 Lovers' by Cagedbaby, which sounds like what you're looking for (well, apart from the minimalism, but it's not that loud either - bass riffs and woozy synth biz abound).

Heywood, I have gotten your mixes and so far, I like what I've heard.

Negativa, True Believer (You know you love it when I'm dressed in drag) (Barima), Thursday, 26 May 2005 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ T here this weekend.

Poker Flat is kind of tech-house. Even when they do "minimal" it's not really minimal is it? Like I dunno, does having lots of clicks make something minimal? Sometimes these days it's like the answer is "yes, yes it does!" because everybody wants to buy minimal house regardless. Or feel that they are. If I went into a record shop I would ask for minimal even though in reality I often don't buy the stuff which genuinely is minimal, I know I would get a good selection of records I do like!

Going back to Pokerflat/Physical, there was a Steve Bug/DJ T single on it, it's a 10 inch vinyl, fact fans! It's good but apparently Marine Parade re-released it and it became a breakbeat anthem so I don't like it anymore.

As regards Body Language, I think it's really good. The start of it is interesting, it feels kind of retro, a spoken word type vocal in the intro which ends and then a perky first tune, all mixes used to be like that! Does anyone know what I mean?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 26 May 2005 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh and just read on the Royksopp thread, Chelonis is doing some vocals for their new album!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 26 May 2005 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes. A lot of hip hop DJs, at least the bedroom types, still like doing this. A close friend sticks to this rule like glue. I think it would perk up more dance mixes if this happened often.

Oh and just read on the Royksopp thread, Chelonis is doing some vocals for their new album!

That would pique up my tiny interest some.

Hey, you disappeared yesterday. I know yer busy, but I was hoping to engage you more on both this thread and the other one.

and about 24 hours

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 26 May 2005 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan how long have you had to do your thesis? (what's it on?)

I think Jacob is applying a fairly restrictive definition of "electro-house", which even Get Physical doesn't really meet - surely "Take Me Home" and "Philly" are just house by this definition? Not to mention a good two thirds of the label's output from the Booka Shade album onwards, which is as much micro, minimal, or tech-house depending on one's definition.

(I agree with you Ronan that a lot of the "minimal" stuff now isn't very minimal, just clicky; on the other hand, I've always thought that the best stuff done by Perlon etc. back in the "day" (00/01) was clicky but not really minimal. All that said a lot of Pokerflat's early stuff was genuinely minimal)

The funny thing about that Steve Bug album is that, although I enjoyed it, I was deeply ambivalent about its overall "project" of fusing electro (in the electroclash sense) with house. I remember saying something in my review like: "simply putting electro synth riffs over house grooves doesn't seem like the most exciting direction for this music" (or to that effect anyway). So so wrong!

Body Language is very very pretty isn't it - the Luciano track for example is just beautiful. Maybe where Rebel Futurism #2 has an "edge" for me is that it covers pretty much all the different sub-styles that are big right now, whereas BL plows a relatively restricted furrow. In strict tune-for-tune quality terms they're probably equal for me.

BTW Tim G which city are you in? It's fairly easy to get Get Physical stuff in Melbourne - there's a couple of dance record stores which are all obsessed with it and import large quantities of the CDs and 12s. Body Language has actually been picked up and released locally.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 26 May 2005 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the Lindstrom track on "Body Language", "I Feel Space". I picked it up last week.

My thesis is on.....music blogging! and to what extent the academic work done on news blogging can be applied to it. I've had ages to do it, I haven't actually been as slack as it seems, I just really read for too long and took too many notes, couldn't organise where to put everything. Also the 5000 words that are left are mainly methodology, introduction and conclusion, so quite easy really.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 26 May 2005 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

hjaha ive got that mosterbaze steve bug/dj t tune.....on the marine parade repress!!!! urgh!!!! i used to love them 'breaks

hahai didnt even know who they were. i remember thinking that "dj t" was a bit of a lame dj name.
i listened to body language again last night, on my proper speakers rather than headphones, it sounded a lot better, and i was kinda into it. i think it just was a lot more minimal than i was expecting (ie the get physical mix part II)

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 26 May 2005 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ T is an awful name yeah!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Aren't all DJ names with the letters D and/or J in them awful. And I'm sorry, but doing introductions kill me.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if Chelonis might get some non-get physical production for his own album - since he's helping Royksopp with vocals.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

okay it's pretty clear i underestimated suck my deck at the time.

also, heywood, i downloaded yr first mix (on dial-up here) and i like it quite a bit. thanks!

strng hlkngtn, Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

nice one jess -- keep in mind you're listening to a former d&b/2-step dj here, i dunno if that comes across in my mixing or anything. i guess i'm trying a different approach...

btw folks, 'boogie playground' is still up for grabs on slsk if you wanna...

heywood jablomi (heywood), Thursday, 26 May 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just been listening to that 2nd mix, Mike and it's great. Think I'll pass on Cirque du Soleil tho ;)

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 26 May 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

heheheheh right on...

heywood jablomi (heywood), Thursday, 26 May 2005 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

re: boogie playground -- any opinions?
so far, i really dig it. it's probably just because the material is so new to me, but 'freemind' is really standing out as *the* killer track although that electro thing at the end 'class of 1984' is pretty damn dope too. iirc (my stuff's at home), 'the calling' was really doing it for me too.

definitely sounding more minimal with this album, but me likey.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Thursday, 26 May 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Aren't all DJ names with the letters D and/or J in them awful

i would always get billed (and sometimes still do) as dj twitch. it drove me nuts which is why i inverted the letters to stop promoters doing it. i have just seen a flyer that says 'dj jd twitch'. argghhhh!

unless you are a very old school scratch mix legend, dj in front of your name = total dud.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 26 May 2005 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Does DJ Koze count as "old school scratch legend" cos he used to play hip hop? I like the way his name sticks out among the minimal house fraternity because of the big fat capital letter "DJ" at the start of it...

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 26 May 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

in some sort of weird penance for avoiding this for nearly a year, i have listened to almost nothing but the get physical mix the last few days.

strng hlkngtn, Friday, 27 May 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yup, i would say dj koze gets away with it 'cos of his hip hop roots. i'm sure there are other exceptions too. maybe as get physical gets more minimal, so will dj t's name and soon he'll be known as just 't'.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 27 May 2005 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Re "Freemind", I still reckon that it's THEE anthem from Get Physical so far (excluding "I Don't Know" which is a song-anthem more than track-anthem).

Also I'd like to reiterate my comments above relating to Raymond Barry's "TV Eye" on Smagghe's Death Disco mix. It is seriously the most awesome thing in the world. No surprises that it was made by the Par-T-One guys.

Ronan - good luck with finishing the thesis!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 27 May 2005 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

heh. Then eventually the t will devolve to an l

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 27 May 2005 06:25 (twenty-one years ago)

It just occurred to me that Booka Shade's "Up" is actually a very fucked-up remix of the a-side "Stupid Questions".

Sorry I just had to announce that.

There should be more action on this thread.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

There's been a lot in the last couple of days. It's more helpful than the bobbins thread in many ways.

Negativa, True Believer (You know you love it when I'm dressed in drag) (Barima), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I know, I just don't want it to stop! I'm enjoying it.

Was listening to the Get Physical mix while walking my dog today, and thinking again that "Our World (Our Music)" always strikes me as the LAST house track, it is that one and then nothing afterwards ever ever ever. There's a certain apocalyptic comprehensiveness to it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

My thesis is done, and now "T" will play here tomorrow. Mr T? I pity the fool who is not fond of our new 12 minute track minimal direction.

I can't wait to hear what Matos and Jess think of this mix.

I sometimes think Get Physical pre-minimal is maybe not as good as it seems, because they gut so many italo tracks for their best hooks! But I think there's probably enough original production there. Listening to that Italo mix Fezaffe posted on the YSI thread it strikes me that GPM is easily the most italo-house label in existence, not just cos of the sampling, the sound of the first 15 releases or so.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Strange, I can't imagine "Our World (Our Music)" as the last of anything - more like a musical mythological reimagining of the big bang: In The beginning, there was nothing but chaos and dub. But then came the word, the first word, and it was "MUSIC".

Jedmond (Jedmond), Saturday, 28 May 2005 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes well that works too! Its ultimate-ness means its either the wellspring from which all else flows or the final dialectical resolution.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 28 May 2005 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the way one side of that Es Vedra thing has that funny "sunnnnset people.....................WELCOME" part to it.

Me and my co-worker one day began cueing mixes which have weird voices saying "welcome" in them and as customers walk onto the floor we would press the cue button to "welcome" them.

It was absolutely hilarious particularly on some Jon Cutler compilation which pitched down sounded like you were being welcomed to the state penitentiary.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 28 May 2005 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

on first listen body language is fairly flooring me. way, WAY more clicky than i expected, though.

strng hlkngtn, Saturday, 28 May 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Strongo you'll probably really enjoy the Booka Shade album, which is like the midpoint between the 2nd Anniversary Mix and Body Language. Even my (usually fairly dubious about German and electro- house) boyfriend likes it 'cos of its potential-soundtrack-to-The-Bourne-Identity-style (his words) sci fi noir feel. Lots of wilting flower minor key melodies.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 28 May 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ T was great last night. It's funny twitch said upthread he may change his name to just "T" because he introduced himself to anyone he met as "T". The music was, as I think Tim said another time after seeing him, like many many versions of "No Way Back".

He told me alot of interesting GPM news. He has done a remix of "Muscle Cars" by Mylo. It is good. Chelonis's new single will have a Tiga remix on it. Chelonis makes his own stuff but it is "quite rough, but good rough" and then Walter from Booka cleans it up. But for his album they are going to leave it as it is. Oh yeah and the first release off Boogie Playground with remixes will have one by Joakim and also one by...........ADONIS.

That is, if Adonis has not spent the cash advance and ran. Apparently he works in McDonalds now, and he initially asked for some huge cash advance but was negotiated down a bit.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 29 May 2005 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm guessing Adonis has been help captive by Larry Sherman.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 29 May 2005 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

that's mad that they tracked adonis down.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Sunday, 29 May 2005 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought somebody should do a book on what happened to all those dudes. Like Chip E is apparently a computer programmer these days.

Not surprising they all gave up music considering they all got ripped the fuck off by Trax and/or DJ International.

But actually, I remember Adonis resurfacing briefly a couple years back to do some dubious remixes of "move your body". If that is anything to go by, the quality of his output may not be high.

Jacob (Jacob), Sunday, 29 May 2005 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't see that discussion upthread re: adonis. you guys are so bad!

i am gonna take the plunge and grab the "body language" mix. anybody know somewhere stateside that i can hook it up??

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Try Bent Crayon. GP releases are a bit expensive ($20ish) but they're worth it, and it beats paying the current dollar-to-anything-else exchange rates.

three weeks pass...
< namedrop alert >

so after sonar i had to go to cannes to spend a week at the lions (advertising awards) for work, and happily, there turned out to be a nice post-sonar thread running through all the events. all the different agencies hosted parties all week and a number of decent djs showed up (including steve mackey, who, despite the crowd, played "midas touch" (bless him) and another duo that i danced to for four hours before finding out the next day was 2 MANY EFFING DJS). anyway one of the highlights was attending this lunch one afternoon and being sat, very randomly, across from a pair of german dudes who i soon struck up a conversation with. they said they were in cannes because they run an advertising music house but that they also had a label on the side. i ask the label name, not expecting to have heard of it, and of course it's get physical! small world.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 9 July 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

i should add that they were super cool guys and that i love booka shade even more now. "mandarine girl" STILL on heavy rotation.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 9 July 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

The Chelonis album has leaked. It's 80 minutes long, and sounding amazing so far. "One and One" and "I Don't Care" are present.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

This doesn't do me any good as I'm still stuck on the amazing Chelonis/Remo "Black Sabrina" single. Chelonis could very well be my favorite "dance" vocalists/lyricist at the moment.

Booka Shade have apparently mixed the new Moby single. Surely this signifies something.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 14 August 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

That people who still think that electrohouse is for hipsters/snobs are insane/don't live where I live (aka most likely option) - Hell, at my local deli I heard Booka's "Memento", I haven't heard anything new played there since "Since I Left You".

all of that is a prelude to:

GPM 031 - DJ T. - "A guy called Jack", incl. remixes by Joakim and Samim & Michal (Release: August 05)

GPM 030 - CHELONIS R. JONES "Le Bateau Ivre" (taken from the album "Dislocated Genius", coming out in september with remixes by Tiga & Jesper Dahlbäck + Samim & Michal + Booka Shade) (Release: August 05)

GPM 032 - Williams - "Picadilly Circuits" (Release: September 05)

GPM 033 - DJ T. - "Funk on you", incl. remixes by Headman & Putch 79 (Release: September 05)

GPM 034 - Tomas Barfod (Release: October 05)

taken from Get Physical website

Jedmond (Jedmond), Sunday, 14 August 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

i saw that moby remix in the shop the other day but was a bit weirded out so didnt listen. i mean, how do you make moby sound good?

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 14 August 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

The Booka mix of Moby isn't that bad, you can here a soundclip of it here.

Mboy's actually gotten some decent remixers for his singles from this album besides Booka, I think Abe Duque/Superdiscount/Mylo/Ewan Pearson were on the previous singles.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 14 August 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

The Joakim mix of DJ T is a real disappointment. The other one by whoever those dudes are is crap enough too!

Sadly it seems Adonis took the 250 dollar advance and away to the crackhouse he went. That remix never having materialised.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 14 August 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Odd that Adonis seems so charming and happy in the interview for Soul Jazz's acid comp.

Bit dissapointed in the "Le Bateau Ivre" remixes too, I think a glossy electro house remake could've been a big crossover (those echoing "I think, think I'm in love" are really ripe for pop exploitation.)

LMFAO @ THAT COVER

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

i thought both this and the elektrochemie 12" were pretty boring. and was bummed out for thinking so.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Saturday, 17 December 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

The Joakim mix of DJ T is a real disappointment.

one of my favorite remixes of the year actually. :/

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 17 December 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

the Claude Vonstroke is hilarious, and great. It has chimps! Making noises!

We never got the last 2 GPMs in at work, tho, I just listened online to them, thought they were pretty good tho not as good as say "Piccadilly Circuits" (but then what is). The latter I think deserves to be on a par with "Mandarine Girl" and "Body Language", it's such a brilliant record, I can't stop playing it.

Okay, so now I'm confused: the Fuckpony track "Ride The Pony" is the same as the "Dave Brubeck" track on Get Physical 2???

The way that M.A.N.D.Y. mix out of it after about 1 and half minutes is criminal, this is one of those tracks that sound better the longer it's allowed to run on.

As per Ronan I absolutely love Jona's "Yellowstone", which reminds me a bit of Herbert's remix of "Sing It Back" as well as New Horizons! Combined with the awesome xylobass line in "Full Pools" and I'm starting to suspect that Jona is a secret UK Garage revivalist!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 28 April 2006 09:13 (twenty years ago)

haha was listening to blackmarket presents....2 step the other day...loads of xylo/harpsichord business!

i always get irritated by the Yellowstone tune, then as it unfolds a big grin spreads across my face. liking the 4th anniversary mix a lot. esp. the snax and ioneq tune!

bbbut (and i think ive asked about this before, at least have been meaning to ask) is there a defect in my copy where the "migracion" remix just cuts out prematurely, then a short pause, before the williams tune starts up? seems like v weird mixing if its not a mistake.

Full body workout 2 is pretty boring! dont think ill bother with the other one.

and finally....anyone got a "body language 2" release date?

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 28 April 2006 09:23 (twenty years ago)

Jona is some kind of genius, I mean, how the hell do you get records to sound like that. I think the new comp suffers a tiny bit from what Tim says, too many tracks cut short, they should have left out a few of the more standard tunes in favour of newer ones.

Jona also has a new 12 on the ever exciting Fumakilla, sounds pretty good at first glance.

Oh yeah I also like the way in the Zwicker track, after some discussion with my gf, we think the screams go "monkey screaming, monkey screaming, woman orgasming", it's kind of weird and funny! A different sample I think!

I just realised that paragraph looks kind of dubious but it is about nothing other than Get Physical.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 28 April 2006 11:25 (twenty years ago)

I was definitely annoyed by the haphazard shortening of tracks, but it's definitely starting to grow on me.

If Booka Shade use a spotlight to highlight certain parts of a track, it seems like the same thing with this mix, where people just jump up onto the stage for 'their moment' and then get pulled off - it makes the mix (and the label) appear pretty monolithic.

natedey (ndeyoung), Friday, 28 April 2006 13:50 (twenty years ago)

"Jona is some kind of genius, I mean, how the hell do you get records to sound like that. I think the new comp suffers a tiny bit from what Tim says, too many tracks cut short, they should have left out a few of the more standard tunes in favour of newer ones. "

I was about to post the same thing. But I'm on first listen stage and might come around to the same position as natedey.

I would love to do the following mix transition:

Schaeben & Voss ft. Schad Privat - One Night At The Dizko
Fuckpony - Ride The Pony/Dave Brubeck
Andre Kraml - Safari (Kiki & Silversurfer Remix)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 28 April 2006 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Okay so there's a specific garage tune that "Yellowstone" is really reminding me of, but I can't put my finger on what it is. This is going to bug me. Maybe it's Stephen Emmanual's "Colours"? Will report back.

Does anyone else think DJ T's "Stalker" sounds like "Groove La Chord"? (in line with my post on another thread that "Groove La Chord" is a big record again).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 28 April 2006 14:07 (twenty years ago)

I'll be the fifth person to say Jona is amazing. Yellowstone's been on repeat the past 24 hours.

liking the 4th anniversary mix a lot. esp. the snax and ioneq tune!

Fruity good fun, for sure! It was cracking me up and making me sing along last night.

is there a defect in my copy where the "migracion" remix just cuts out prematurely, then a short pause, before the williams tune starts up?

mine is like that as well, for whatever that's worth.

jergins (jergins), Friday, 28 April 2006 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Tim get decks and learn to DJ already. being heavily into this stuff is about 70 percent of the skill required, you'd learn in no time!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 28 April 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)

is there a defect in my copy where the "migracion" remix just cuts out prematurely, then a short pause, before the williams tune starts up?

I have this too. Doesn't seem to be a mistake. Just a quick fade-out "...and now the last track of the night The Arrivaaaaaaalll."

Anyway, loads to take in on just one first listen, although I agree that a lot of tracks are cut too short (Migracion for instance.) They could've cut down on the DJ T, or should we say T? and left off 'Manderine Girl'.

Omar (Omar), Friday, 28 April 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Whoa I think the DJ T tracks are great.

deeej, Friday, 28 April 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

I hardly think it's a slur against DJ T, just a track like "Timeout" seems like something that should have been released on Get Physical's 3rd Anniversary compilation (you know, if it existed).

Jedmond (Jedmond), Saturday, 29 April 2006 03:25 (twenty years ago)

Which would also have to include Riton vs. Howdi's "Closer", as well as something from "Memento" (even if a remix).

Jedmond (Jedmond), Saturday, 29 April 2006 04:09 (twenty years ago)

Yeah "Closer" is a good track. Oddly there's already a Memento track on the 4th Anniversary mix! Strictly speaking "Friend For A Night" and "Shimmer" are both good candidates for exclusion owing to duplication on the Booka Shade albums, except that they both work really well in the mix.

Really M.A.N.D.Y. should have used "Ain't Got Much To Lose", the ace vinyl only track from Memento. That and "Trespass 06" maybe?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 29 April 2006 06:15 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I still am not mad keen on "Ambush" or "Stalker", whichever one is on the 4th Anniversary mix! Never liked that 12. It's not like....bad, it's just kind of boring.

I like the Francisco remix of "Jah" quite a bit, even if he is a bit of a one trick pony!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 29 April 2006 18:47 (twenty years ago)

I actually really like that DJ T track Ronan! Overall I quite like T's new melancholy techno sound, it's a nice compromise b/w just following M.A.N.D.Y./Booka Shade and sticking obstinately to Chicago revivalism.

True it's not as good as the "Animal Magic" remix.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 29 April 2006 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Or "Beat The Street" which still kills it live as last Tuesday night proved.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 29 April 2006 18:55 (twenty years ago)

I like the Francisco remix of "Jah" quite a bit

Yessss! That's one of the early stand-out tracks for me. But yeah 'Stalker' is the one I like least (I sort of lose concentration after that for a bit too.) I've got absolutely no problem with 'Funk on you' or 'Time out'.

Omar (Omar), Saturday, 29 April 2006 18:58 (twenty years ago)

"Time Out" is one of his best I think, really nice feeling to it, he can go a bit cold sometimes.

Though my favourite T is still the remix of Vince-Superworld, on Art of Disco. If you guys haven't heard maybe I can do the forbidden YSI dance.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 29 April 2006 19:08 (twenty years ago)

the Joakim remix on it is kind of rubbish too and I think is the one just after "Stalker".

I guess the problem with this CD is that the second 20 releases on GPM have been alot more varied and perhaps more hit and miss.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 29 April 2006 19:09 (twenty years ago)

what other jona exists in the world?

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 29 April 2006 19:10 (twenty years ago)

Yeah that remix is great, I've got it on a otherwise mostly useless Ian Pooley mix-cd which I won't throw out for that reason.

I sort of miss the time when tracks like that and "Freemind" sounded really fresh and startling though (as opposed to just really great in and of themselves). One slightly annoying aspect of the explosion of electro-house (esp. in Australia) is that it tends to undercut how "ohmyfuckinggod" tunes like that were when I first heard them - I suspect if I played "Freemind" for the first time to someone now I suspect they'd just shrug their shoulders.

x-post cutty the 12 inch for "Learning From The Mistakes" has an amazing b-side "Full Pools" which is essential, have you heard that? I don't know any other Jona though. Some of the photos on his website make him out to be quite hot!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 29 April 2006 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Yes I do miss those early days of every GPM release blowing me away, it's sort of normalised now, also that was my first time really going and finding a label for myself, now this happens way more often and I have heard everything before it's out etc

Though Mobilee has been giving me that kick a bit too I guess.

Jona has a few other 12s pre Get Physical, which are very good, and as I said a new one coming out on Fumakilla, plus he just did a remix for a David K single.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 29 April 2006 19:21 (twenty years ago)

yeah the new fumakilla one:

http://www.discogs.com/release/673102

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 29 April 2006 19:23 (twenty years ago)

they are a really great label, I always big them up cos you don't see mention of them that often, but quietly excellent.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 29 April 2006 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Fumakilla are excellent, I've been playing that recent Woody single a bunch.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 29 April 2006 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Yeah love that one.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 29 April 2006 19:37 (twenty years ago)

On Discogs it says that one of Jona's aliases is Fandango!

Jona's Ask/Use & Abuse 12" didn't make much impression on me, but with my Yellowstone love I should go back and listen to it.

jergins (jergins), Saturday, 29 April 2006 19:37 (twenty years ago)

it was Jona's mix of 'Jah' that really made me sit up and take notice. 'Full Pools' didn't grab me as much as it's A-side tho, oddly perhaps. Gotta re-listen obv.

Get Physical are churning the CDs out now it seems - now we have Fuckpony's "Children of Love".

Tracklisting:

01 intro
02 children of love
03 ride the pony
04 silence
05 cellphone hit
06 it's only music
07 freaky story of earth
08 93 n 4am
09 get pony
10 make money, ho
11 bongo porn
12 mafalda
13 draft

First impressions: "Ride the pony" and "Cell phone hit" are edits, the rest of the album takes after the 12" (this is a good thing), and there is no appearance by Paris the Black Fu (though they mention the planet Uranus to make up for it).

Jedmond (Jedmond), Saturday, 3 June 2006 04:09 (twenty years ago)

Fuckpony! That kind of came out of the blue, didn't it?

Telephonething (Telephonething), Saturday, 3 June 2006 04:18 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but then Jay Haze has always seemed like an overly-productive guy to me, so I'm not completely surprised Fuckpony beat M.A.N.D.Y. to releasing an album.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Saturday, 3 June 2006 04:27 (twenty years ago)

What's with this blatant and ham fisted attempt at crossover on the part of GPM.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 3 June 2006 07:23 (twenty years ago)

crossover to what?

jergins (jergins), Saturday, 3 June 2006 08:15 (twenty years ago)

dunno, to people who haven't heard GPM.

Don't get me wrong I really like the Fuckpony 12, but I thought the Snax and Ianeq one was pretty shit (in an annoying way) as I said on Stylus, plus this bombardment of CDs.

It just seems a very sudden shift in focus, from the Booka Shade album to really ultra poppy 12s with a "radio edit".

This will seem anti pop or something, which I'm not, GPM is always pop anyhow, I just don't want any more stuff like Snax and Ianeq. I mean from "Movements" to some "dirty electro, evoking Prince!!. That kind of electropop shit has been around for about 5 years and it was only good for about 6 months.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 3 June 2006 08:34 (twenty years ago)

Before I am misinterpreted I should just clarify, I don't mind them attempting to crossover even more, if that is what is happening, it's just not being done very smoothly or very well.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 3 June 2006 08:35 (twenty years ago)

Ronan that's one track though!

cf. "Ride The Pony" which has vocals and is catchy but is also too subtle and unchanging to be a real crossover hit.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 3 June 2006 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Yeah but I do think they seem to have made a weird push with these last two releases and so many CDs in succession to try and hit a further audience.

As I say, I'm not predicting doom or anything.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 3 June 2006 13:46 (twenty years ago)

love the Electrochemie remix of "In White Rooms", even if it's thinking seems to be:

a) "In White Rooms" wasn't enough like "Mandarine Girl" in the first place; and

b) the climax is too good to mess with so we'll leave it out entirely.

Luckily for Electrochemie the production is so swoonsome it's impossible to hold the above against it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 9 June 2006 07:37 (twenty years ago)

it sounds exactly the same, on the record sites.

the new 12 by Discemi, Jouri Hulkonnen and Phonogenic, is very good. I played it last night and it really went off. Kind of Arquipelago/Pleasure Seeker style.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Picked up the "In White Rooms" vinyl (one of those tunes you just have to have on vinyl). The "Neo Mix", which is basically the album version slightly modified for the dancefloor, does exactly the right thing with the final climax, extending it only slightly so it still feels like it's ending too soon but not quite as cruelly as on the album.

It was the record of the week at my local dance vinyl store. It could well be huge, bigger than "Body Language" possibly. When I interviewed Arno from Booka Shade the other week he said he was looking forward to seeing how it was received in Ibiza.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 16 June 2006 07:53 (nineteen years ago)

DJ T vs Booka Shade - Queen Lucid... sounds like a composite of so many other Get Physical tunes - Body Language, Ain't Got Much To Lose, Night Falls, Freemind... It even sort of starts to vaguely quote "Body Language" in parts.

This is not a bad thing, it's like a "story so far" track. I don't think it's a certified Get Physical classic, but it is the b-side. Looking forward to hearing "Played Runner".

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 July 2006 04:26 (nineteen years ago)

I'm certainly grateful to them for warning me about the Booka Shade album!

If it wasn't for those big "hits" and the last 2/3rds of the Body Language mix (which even saying I love a lot of the music on it I still find a bit dry & surprisingly uninvolving, esp. after hearing Ewan Pearson's Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi mix) I might be tempted to wonder if I ever liked Electro-House and Get Physical much in the first place? Or did I just get swept along by the ILM hivemind??

It's certainly got more obvious to me recently (getting a little jaded/tired or just overexposed to some dance stuff) that I just don't click with electrohouse to anywhere near the same extent I do with more grounded & earthy House music & rhythms, micro(techno)house, minimal-house, techno, electro, hell even your DFA/Punk-funk type of stuff, filterhouse & electroclash areas do more to get me excited.

This DJ T mix seems okay though. A bit more actual regular house strut in it, it doesn't seem quite so vacant & "last months sound" transient. And I still need to get the first Get Physical mix comp. seeing as that seems to be "the one" so far according to everyones recommendations.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 10 July 2006 05:40 (nineteen years ago)

Fandango maybe if you list which (if any) Get Physical tracks you actually like, I might be able to give you a (probably grossly inaccurate) sense of whether it's worth picking up the first mix.

Mind you I love Body Language vol 1, though it took a while for it to grow on me to the fullest extent.

I love the Ewan Pearson mix too. Maybe I'm just less critical than other people here. I think the first anniversary Get Physical mix is closer to the Ewan Pearson mix than Body Language is, definitely.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 10 July 2006 06:49 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think loving Ewan Pearson's mix makes you less critical (I mean come on, it's fantastic).

The bit that baffles me in regards to it, is how Fandango thinks that because he prefers the Pearson mix to Body Language, that also means he doesn't like electrohouse (acknowledgement of over simplification), when the pearson mix is the more electrohouse of the two mixes.

and yeah, seconding the recommending of the Get Physical mix

Jedmond (Jedmond), Monday, 10 July 2006 08:48 (nineteen years ago)

"I don't think loving Ewan Pearson's mix makes you less critical (I mean come on, it's fantastic)."

I just mean, I feel like i go onto every thread these days and say "no, it's great!" to some hater.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 10 July 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

That is one confused post right there (mine). Tim I will probably pick the first mix up out of curiosity eventually anyway, there are loads of tracks Get Physical and others I like IIRC!

I think I DO basically know why a lot of Electrohouse doesn't quite do it for me but it's tricky to unpack concisely for ILM :/ And nobody particularly needs to read such navelgazing blog shit anyhow.

I could do to download some Tiga mixes sometime, that feels suddenly like it could be the missing link in my appreciation of it all. I should maybe add I heard Ewan Pearson's mix but I didn't keep it on my hard drive very long. I would probably buy it again if I saw it somewhere (cheap) but even that still had that weirdly disposable feeling I get about much electrohouse.

Here's what: There is a huge ..in' A' remix from MANDY to the "In white rooms" track from booka shade that i want to find. They've played it in the no soap radio session and i've heard it once more from them in another session where they completely recostrunct the hall thing. It might be "Blue Rooms"? It has a few of the sounds of "In White Rooms" but is otherwise an entirely different track. M.A.N.D.Y. played it live when I saw them (or, rather, him) last.

Not sure how "funky" would play, with that song, though - I can see the funk coming in at the end as a mix-out but this track seems so ... throbbingly austere that anything disturbing its purity would seem strange.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

Ronan, I think I enjoy all the remixes/mashes of "In White Rooms" better than the original!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

I don't like that Marc Houle track though I don't think. Nothing he's done since has been as good as "Borrowed Gear'!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

i dreamed that Chelonis Jones officially released a live DJ set he did (does he even DJ?) and it was like 40% Aaron Hall and Romanthony and Green Velvet tracks.

He would kill me if he knew!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

I moved houses this past week and with most everything else packed up all I had in my car was the Chelonis album. It really is great. The more time I spend with it, the more I love it and I agree with whoever said it was the best full length on GPM (although I also agree with whoever said there wasn't that much competition, but still). Any idea of anything new on the way from him?

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's fair to say that the opening 6 track sequence of Body Language vol. 2 is the best thing mix-wise I've heard this year. Take that, Kiki.

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

I've read Todd Burns' review of the Fuckpony album on Stylus, but I need more input to decide if I'm gonna buy it. What are folks' thoughts?

Can anyone track i.d. the first track in M.A.N.D.Y.'s No Soap Radio set? The one that sounds vaguely Henrik Schwarz-y, with the amazing syncopated percussion that sounds like it's being played on glass bottles and the squawking acid bass?

New stuff from Get Physical:

OUT SOON!
GPM 056 Booka Shade - Darko 1 (booka shade meets hot chip mixes)
GPM 057 Fuckpony - Its only music
GPM 059 Jesse Rose - Didnt I

Depeche Mode´s upcoming single "Martyr" (coming in various formats)
will feature remixes by Booka Shade.

A new Booka Shade single, „DARKO“, will be released at the end of October.

The two 12" editions will feature remixes by HOT CHIP,
TIEFSCHWARZ and RADIOSLAVE.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 2 October 2006 04:50 (nineteen years ago)

into it

jergins (jergins), Monday, 2 October 2006 06:21 (nineteen years ago)

ugh Hot Chip FFS....as a band maybe, as remixers, resounding no.

Still Tiefschwarz and Radioslave (they sure love Radioslave at GPM towers) should be good.

I played with Booka Shade on Saturday, the live show seems to get better and better, it is total stadium dance music, they seem to have a few really technoey tunes they didn't put on the album.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 2 October 2006 09:32 (nineteen years ago)

The Hot Chip remix of Amp Fiddler is ace, Ronan, like the first few tracks of Ewan Pearson's Sci-Fi Hi-Fi only more far-out. So I'm not too concerned.

yeah I'm loving the Booka Shade essential mix - they're totally approaching live Underworld/Orbital territory.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

i bet all three of those singles will be good, but where is the new chelonis album?

josh. (disco stu), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

Cut from einzelkindmusic's myspace:

Chelonis R. Jones - Chatterton

Right now we´re working on Chelonis long awaited "Dislocated Genius" follower called "Chatterton". We´re in the final production stage right now so the album should hit the streets early 2007....get ready for some Psycho Audio Couture !!!

This time, the singles better have Booka Shade remixes (I swear we wear promised them for "Dislocated Genius").

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 04:10 (nineteen years ago)

There was a Booka Shade remix of "Middle Finger Music" (not amazing) and a M.A.N.D.Y. remix of "La Bateau Ivre" (pretty ace).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 04:14 (nineteen years ago)

I had forgotten about the "Middle Finger Music remix", and never paid attention to M.A.N.D.Y. remix - to busy griping that "Shimmer" wasn't on the vinyl version of "Movements". Must remember to maintain that gripe, as my initial complaint is now rendered mute.

P.S. When is Jona's Yellowstone getting a proper release?

P.P.S. Why must I be so whiny over Get Physical's generosity.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 06:42 (nineteen years ago)

The new Booka Shade remixes of Azzido Da Bass are perhaps their most trance/ravey yet!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 06:50 (nineteen years ago)

When is Jona's Yellowstone getting a proper release?

srsly this needs the full treatment.

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 06:59 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone remember who did that Kornel remix of "In White Rooms", the mashup with Corona's "Rhythm of the Night" vocal? it's fucking amazing and i want to obtain/buy a higher quality version of the mp3 i've got now...

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 07:22 (nineteen years ago)

Have listened to the first disc of M.A.N.D.Y.'s At The Controls. Almost all great tracks but it meanders a bit (one of the hazards of chewing through 19 tracks on one CD). I may change my mind though as I felt the same thing about the first Body Language mix initially.

It has a different version of the track that opened their No Soap Radio mix - turns out it's Jesse Rose and Henrik Schwarz's "Stop Look & Listen" (three points to Ronan). The version on At The Controls is "Henrik's Version", so perhaps the version on No Soap Radio is Jesse's? Anyone heard the Jesse Rose album More Than One?

Early favourite track for disc one is Osborne's "(TBC)" which is just magical and totally epic.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

As against Vahid's suggestions in the Border Community thread, I'd basically marry the first half of the first disc to the second half of the second disc, as follows:

Mathew Dear - Tide
Isolée - Willy Skipper
Djuma Soundsystem - Les Djinns (My My Mix)
Jona - Smart Cats Vs Dumb Dogs
M.A.N.D.Y - Take Two Four
Alex Under - Collage
Dinky - Michelle
Señor Coconut - Electrolatino (Ricardo Villalobos 'Lecktro Carlño' Mix)
Osborne - Outta Sight
Jesse Rose & Henrik Schwarz - Stop Look & Listen (Henrik's Version)
Rockers Hi Fi - Push Push (M.A.N.D.Y Mix)
Booka Shade - In White Rooms (Mexico Version)
My My - Clean Break
Claude Vonstroke - Who's Afraid Of Detroit
Lindstrøm - I Feel My Space (M.A.N.D.Y Mix)
Scsi-9 - Senorita Tristeza
Chikinki - Assassinator 13 (Ruege Hagelstein 'Ride On Take Off' Mix)
Justin Martin - The Sad Piano (Charles Webster Mix)
Zweikarakter - Synthic
Djuma Soundsystem - Les Djinns (Trentemøller Mix)
Coldcut - Walk A Mile In My Shoes (Henrik Schwarz Radio Mix)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

Actually you could leave off the Coldcut remix (which isn't even mixed on the actual CD anyway) - it's already been used elsewhere and the Trentemoller remix of "Les Djinns" is such a brilliant, beautiful way to end a mix.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 08:34 (nineteen years ago)

The track listed as being Claude Von Stroke's "Who's Afraid of Detroit?" I'd always assumed was Stephan Bodzin's "Caligula". It's the same track which starts that Bodzin mix I've been posting about frequently. Can anyone confirm it's identity? It's got the ghostly backing vocal snippets and guys going "hchm" and "hah!"

And while I'm posting on this thread all by myself, I may as well ask an entirely unrelated but similar question:

does anyone know the actual identity of the track incorrectly nameed the "Fairy Dub Mix" of "Le Bateau Ivre" on M.A.N.D.Y.'s 4th Anniversary Mix? I know it's not the Fairy Dub Mix (or Fairy Remix) on the Le Bateau Ivre vinyl. I also know it's not the Booka Shade/M.A.N.D.Y. Remix (which is ace - track it down if you haven't heard it).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 09:00 (nineteen years ago)

'who's afraid of detroit?' doesn't have any vocals! it is everywhere these days though. at first i didn't quite understand why but it's one of those slow-burning anthems (or maybe i have just had it bashed relentlessly into my head). the track breaks seem to be in the wrong places at times though.

i really love the whole at the controls mix, anyway, i think it's really consistent and i wouldn't leave any of it off!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 09:08 (nineteen years ago)

Not vocals as such - breathy ghostly sort-of-vocals in the same way as "In White Rooms".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not saying that At The Controls needs to be a single disc - I was more commenting on the fact that in the other thread Vahid said he'd reckon he'd like it more if it was one disc with the second half of the first disc and the first half of the second disc. Whereas if I was gonna cut it down I'd do almost the reverse.

That My My track "Clean Break" is so good.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 09:21 (nineteen years ago)

i prefer the first half of the first CD too - yet another jona track to obsess over! i think the second CD works astonishingly well as a whole, this cheesy-but-dark listening experience.

i want to investigate more my my: i love 'clean break' too, and also 'bonus jack', and the album's meant to be good...

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

Album is outstanding. Agree on My My, they're really good too. You can hear a 30min mix from them on

rchinn (rchinn), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

My My's recent 12 on Aus is really good, kinda enjoy it as much as anything on the album. "Moneybowl" in particular.

"Whose Afraid Of Detroit" is a brilliant track, I was surprised its flipside "The Whistler" wasn't discussed more here, it was huge in the summer over here.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

I am talking about the right track yeah? The one with the samples of a guy clearing his throat and another going "hah!"

I only heard "The Whistler" recently and really like it Ronan, such a bouncy groove (I'd argue the sampled "ugh" is actually more important than the whistling). I probably like it slightly more than "Kookaburra", although that's growing on me too. I find "Kookaburra" works really well in the mix but "The Whistler" stands up by itself a bit better.

I said on another thread a short while back that this sort of track reminds me a lot of "Voodoo Ray".l

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

Yes "Kookaburra" is kind of better in the mix alright, plus to use the old cliché it really sounds alot better in a club, it's very basic, the first time I played it out I was amazed how much it worked. I love these sort of "worker" records.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

They're basically this year's rave riff records, no (e.g. "Geht Nocht" etc.)?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

"does anyone know the actual identity of the track incorrectly nameed the "Fairy Dub Mix" of "Le Bateau Ivre" on M.A.N.D.Y.'s 4th Anniversary Mix? natedey (ndeyoung), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

If we're talking big riff records, surelyPeacan deserves a mention. Slightly annoying (although less so than Geht Nocht) but simple and works well as a bridge in a mix.

rchinn (rchinn), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

Yes for sure...to be fair Geht Nocht only became annoying cos absolutely everyone was playing it!

HUNTA-V (vahid), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and the album version of "Stop Look Listen" is different, more dubby, and with what sounds like synthetic cowbell instead of the main keyboard hook. Also goes on for like 12 minutes.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

I gotta say I was in love with the entire Claude Vonstroke album/singles collection for a good two months or so. If you liked "Who's Araid of Detroit" (which I consider to be masterful) give "Chimps" (on Full Body Workout Vol 2 and the album) a listen as well. Such lovely bass. I'm all around impressed with his work thus far and look forward to hearing this, which I just heard about: http://www.discogs.com/release/813631

Also:

Dear Abbie,

Last night someone played me "put your hands up 4 Detroit" and said "This is cheesy shit. I hate it. You will hate it too" and ... I loved it. When I feel down now, I just hum the bassline to myself and I'm okay. Am I an idiot?

Cheers, GD

Good Dog (Good Dog), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

Admittedly, I got the album in the midst of feeling really, really overwhelmed by the amount (but underwhelmed by the experience) of a whole lotta plinky plonky minimal (either I'm just tiring of it or I have more access to a lot more of it and so I'm getting more duds than the seemingly near-constant stream of classics I was encountering for a while in th minimal realm). So the fullness and playfulness and sheer whoomp of the CVS album was so refreshing to these ears. I needed the perky-ness and found it to be expertly crafted and executed on the album. I guess I should say I'm really only speaking of the the tracks from his singles on the album and not the "pastoral-IDM" sounding track (Eastern Market) or the "live" track or the remixes. Although the remix of the Justin Martin track is ace.

Hi all! nice to see you all again contributing to this HUGE page of GetPhys knowledge. BUT! No one can be actually full-filled without the ultimate knowledge! So, i, humbly, pose to you all masters the question:

WHAT IS THE ID OF THE TRACK THAT SUDDENLY STOPS (as if the boys are experiencing an error with the gear) @ 22:21 (trully trully awesome in deed, one of the most melancholic climaxes in minimal get/phys era) ???

Needless to say that it's the same mix that they have release twice (to my knowledge) in radio stations here & there:

M.A.N.D.Y. - Sputnik Turntable Show (14-10-2006)
Track No.4 - ID-ID [Suddenly stops, like an error with the gear @ 22:21]

and

M.A.N.D.Y. - NJoy In The Mix (06-10-2006)
Track No.4 - ID-ID [Suddenly stops, like an error with the gear @ 22:18]

God! The boys r doin' it again with this track. Thanks again in advance for the one(s) that will perform the right, delicate research to ID this great track.

Are people still hard for Get Physical? Just seen a Chelonis R Jones CD in the store -- worth a punt?

Sorry if this is being talked about already somewhere, but couldn't see anything on new answers, and this seemed the logical thread to revive!

ok just realised that is from last year, but still.

so the retrospective is disappointing apart from this AMAZING matthew herbert rmx of chelonis's 'i don't know', turns it into this lovely summery bouncing thing on a bed of cut-up vocals. and the lopazz exclusive is pretty good too. there are a couple of other good remixes but they're outweighed by the hot chip/rapture pointlessness.

BUT all is not lost, i am catching up on get physical singles - this ritch & collins one is rather nice, jona's 'evidence' is far better than the boring one he has on the retrospective, and i LOVE booka shade's 'karma car'

lex pretend, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

lex pretend, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

the 2nd half of the hot chip remix is incredibly grating. 1st half not that great either. the senor coconut take on 'body language' is cute enough - playable only if the entire crowd is familiar with the original. as i mentioned elsewhere, the sideshow jona remix is an interesting sort of beardo-minimal fusion (i suggested 'microcosmic') that mostly works, but loses steam towards the end. the riton vs heidi original is an rather ugly hip-house concoction, which is a shame after the pretty 'vejer'. rapture remix pretty nice too and remains suprisingly minimal, fujiya one pleasant. haven't heard the herbert mix, getting on that now.

jermainetwo, Thursday, 17 May 2007 09:44 (nineteen years ago)

the other rmx i really like is the other chelonis one - lopazz on 'i don't know'. biggest disappointment, in that i was expecting more, is henrik schwarz on 'vertigo' :(

lex pretend, Thursday, 17 May 2007 10:00 (nineteen years ago)

this herbert "no presets" mix seems to be a response to jess's "scale" review - No presets here. It can get exhausting on a theoretical level-- it's only so interesting that a drum kit was crafted out of sampled dinner conversation or the sound of copulating egrets, after all-- but you'll certainly never hear a Herbert tune built around the familiar sound of an 808.

(on first listen the actual rmx is a little messy for me)

jermainetwo, Thursday, 17 May 2007 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

sorry, not "no presets" - "presets only"

jermainetwo, Thursday, 17 May 2007 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

scale is a great record start to finish

a herbert preset only remix of a get physical track by the in-house producers (booka) = CLASSIC

Swiss DJ and producer Samim has often been part of a couple, first with Michal Ho as Samim & Michal, then later as part of Bearback and Fuckpony with Jay Haze, the latter of which was responsible for last year’s rated longplayer on Get Physical ‘Children of Love’. This year Samim has been stepping into the spotlight alone a little more, with a huge remix of Pier Bucci’s ‘Hay Consuelo’ and big solo gigs in London, Barcelona and Berlin. He’s also techno’s most enthusiastic blogger.

‘Flow’ promises Samim vocal tracks featuring Big Bully (‘Spring Break´), Middle Eastern percussion (‘Black Death´) and even touches of R&B (‘The Lick´ - billed as Timbaland in Berlin in the press notes).

‘Flow’ tracklist

1. Intro
2. Springbreak
3. Blackdeath
4. Heater
5. Ukaka
6. Setup One
7. Zleep
8. Force Feedback
9. The Lick

‘Flow’ by Samim will be released on Get Physical on September 7th, 2007.

the second half of lazarus's disc is AMAZING, as is the whole of the dj t - functions a lot like heidi's monza mix last year, very hit-heavy and banging

lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

in a way i feel sorry for the three or four really awesome tracks on the 5 year thing, buried away on this bizarrely terrible compilation

lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

the lazarus mix.....isn't electrohouse gone?? that's what I thought when I saw the tracklist, it looks so SOLID, even more so than DJ T!

Ronan, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

Re the 5th Anniversary Comp - Yeah I feel the same way - it's odd how boring most of the exclusives are! It's like a bad Poker Flat comp.

"the lazarus mix.....isn't electrohouse gone?? that's what I thought when I saw the tracklist, it looks so SOLID, even more so than DJ T!"

Yeah, and thank God to be honest. I spent ages and ages trying to fall in love with Get Lost and ultimately gave up. Although I'm tempted by Jamie Jones' follow-up.

Tim F, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

That Get Lost mix was difficult alright, but those two discs do look a bit boring to me.

Ronan, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

i listen to the CrowwtownRebels vol 01 mix a lot more than the Get Lost it has to be said. never bothered with Jamie J's - and now that Fopp has gone, the chances of seeing it in a shop have gone forever ! (they always had CrowwTownRebels stuff in .. )

mark e, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

that crosstown rebels mix was really awesome, such a gorgeous rush

lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Kanye sampling Daft Punk? pfft, whatever. just watch this clip of Will.I.Am previewing songs from his forthcoming album, wait for a few minutes 'til he gets to a track called "Get Your Money", and... hehe!

ethan is on record circa a few years ago sayin that the BEP are basically a euro popdance group so i'm not surprised at how housey this album sounds.

I've heard this, it's very good! Bronnt are a Bristol act, kind of John Carpenter-style proto electro. The bloke behind it has done a FACT mixtape which gives a good idea of some of their influences, you can dl it and read an interview about the record here.

Me too.

I'll just have to satisfy myself with all these Lee Curtiss tracks, close enough to old Fuckpony for my purposes.

I know an awful lot of that but almost everything I do know I love, and there's enough I don't know to make it an 'OMG want' type thing.
