Dinosaur Jr.: Brilliant or crap?

I cast my vote for brilliant, but I want to hear others. Whenever I ask this question in real life I get blank expressions.

Jake Becker, Thursday, 1 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I honestly don't know how I feel about them. I like the following albums: "Green Mind", "Bug", "Little Fury Things" & "Whatever's Cool With Me". I don't like anything after "Green Mind". I also listened to "Bug" just about a week ago out of sheer nostalgia and I couldn't believe how poorly produced it was! Damn, I record clearer songs on my digital 4 track with ease. I guess things were much different before the advent of cheap personal home studio devices. Anyway, listening to the stuff wasn't as fun as I remembered. And he really only does one thing, which is whine, basically, and then rip into a flaming guitar solo, all of which start to sound the same at some point, right? It's kind of like that band Poison. Remember them? Every guitar solo ended the same, regardless of the supposed "mood" of the song: "diddly-diddly-diddly-diddly- deeeeeeeeeeee" and then back into the next verse.

I like them. I have a really fond spot in my heart for them. But, it might kind of be like old friends when you finally get back together and realise you don't have much to talk about anymore. Maybe I outgrew them? Or maybe I just have to wait until summertime or something when the mood strikes.

They were good and original, though.

Here's a related question:

Who's better: Dinosaur Jr. or Sebadoh*?

(*just because Lou was originally in Dinosaur, if you didn't know that.)

, Thursday, 1 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Neither. Just pretty good. Take a run at the sun is a classic song.

John Smith, Thursday, 1 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

i only know them from the few videos i saw on 120 minutes and the alternateen singles they released and all of those were crap really. i can't imagine ever buying a record with j mascis on it. i liked lou barlow on sex in the 90s, he is so sensitive. bob wratten should have been on instead of him.

keith, Thursday, 1 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Classic. "Bug", "Youre living all over me" and "Where you been" are all fantasic...rest of their stuff is patchy.."Green mind" is rubbish....if there is a bad point about Dinosaur Jr. its that there is maybe too many needless solos...sometimes they work and other times u just wish he'd put a sock in it..

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 1 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

i'm with Michael: "Your Living All Over Me", "Bug" and "Where You've Been" = pure genius. The Crazy Horse that's actually good and hard. My favorite still is the "Your Living...", that shit burns. As for Dinosaur vs. Sebadoh? No contest: stargazers vs. self-absorbed bastards.

Omar, Friday, 2 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Closer to Dud. J. Mascis could do one thing not too badly, and just kept doing it over again. Pick any one of his albums (my choice is Where You Been) and you won't really need any of the others. Or pick none of them, you won't be missing all that much. But maybe I'm just embarrassed for once giving them more attention than they deserved.

Patrick, Friday, 2 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

They are one of my all time favourite bands, a classic beyond any doubt. Hearing "where you been" when I was 16 was such a change from the boring thrash metal and grunge by numbers I listened to back then. Maybe there last few albums weren't so great, but "bug" and "you're living all over me" don't seemed to have aged that much, bands still try to copy "freakscene" today. And, I'd also agree that "Take a run at the sun" shows how cool J MAscis is. Poison are a classic band too, by the way! Oh and given a choice between Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr, I'm sorry Lou but J wins!

jel, Friday, 2 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I don't think Dino Jr is a band that has worn that well over the years, mainly because they tended to play out their act over the latter part of their career. But I would say that everything up through WHERE YOU BEEN is damn good. Some being higher than others. After that, they kinda treaded through the same water to be interesting. You owe it to yourself to at least get YOU'RE LIVING ALL OVER ME. An essential, I'd say.

I wouldn't all bands to be Dino Jr., I'm glad they exist. We don't have to like everything about them.....but it's nice to appreciate them in parts and pieces.. Lighten up, eh? You don't have to be a rock messiah to contribute.

J Mascis is a geeeenius. Sure, he's done some forgettable stuff over the years but for his schtick to still be interesting after all this time shows him up to be a pretty fine songwriter. It's worth noting that "More Light" is better than most of the Dino Jr albums. Despite the fact that most of the latterday Dino albums were essentially J solo anyway.

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I actually liked More Light better than anything since Where You Been, which was the high point without a doubt. But my fondness for parts of More Light may also have something to do with a certain producer, too.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

INDEED. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeaaaaaaah, I agree with Sean.
Where You Been is a diffent high point for the slacker genre. Even Crooked Rain Crooked Rani doesnt measure up (despite being an excellent album itself). Im not a fan of Green Mind, it being too scattered in my mind. I do liek the earlier stuff and can only ponder what that Dinosaur would have put out with Jay's use of power and Lou's sense, of well, I guess hurt descirbes it well enough.

Mr Noodles, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

'More Light' is what got me back into Dinosaur Jr. I like it better than 'Where You Been' (though that's still good). It always boggles my mind how J.Mascis can produce something so good so late in his career, just when he's been written off by most.

alex in montreal, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

J Mascis and the guitar player from the Stooges (and Mike Watt!) played at the now (thankfully) defunct Wetlands; ensuing guitar battle at some points resembled Shredder v Quine but I ended up liking the shredder (insert Stooges guitar player's name here) bedder

I like "Bulbs of Passion". but my instinct is DJr = crap.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I mean he still lives with his mom for chrissakes! (present company etc)

Tracer Hand, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The first Dinsoaur LP is still THE shit, for me. When J started that double-tracked tenor/falsetto vocal bullshit, he lost me. When Dinoswar were just another (i.e. the only) Husker-Du/Neil-Young band, those guitar solos weren't yet tiresome. So - Classic, Up to Green Mind (which I only recently started to listen to.) I was a Dinosaur fan from the git-go (and still refuse to recognize the "Jr.") - but stopped caring after 'Bug", which didn't measure up to the first two.

J & Watt & Ron Asheton are also playing the first night of All Tomorrow's Parties - probably all Stooges covers again....

And I don't really care for J's overbearing contribution to 'Mr. Machinery Operator'

I think Dinosaur Jr. is a fantastic band. They are either my favorite or close to favorite band. There best albums in my opinion are Your Living all over Me, Where You Been?, and of course there new "best of" cd called Ear Bleeding Country. Check out there other stuff if you like those records starting with either Bug or Green Mind. That J Mascis dude is a helluva guitar player and writes some great songs, my favorites of his being 'In a Jar', 'Get Me', and 'Thumb'.

dinojr -- great up through Bug. lou barlow's departure was the end (because mascis needs the friction and because dino jr was greater than its individual parts). Green Mind has some interesting moments due to don fleming and the rummager. after that, mascis loses the plot completely. a fog, indeed.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:07 (twenty years ago) link

Don't know.

I can't listen to anything J. Mascis has done without falling asleep, and it's not just me; I have a friend who went to see him and she fell asleep at the concert.

In summary: BORING

Aaanyway, Dinosaur Jr. invented indie rock before there was a term for it. I really really like them. It's amazing they're not seen as the pioneers they really were. Look, I don't know to break this to you, so I'm just gonna say it: NIRVANA DID NOT INVENT INDIE-ROCK!!! There, I said it.

Of course, you could also say that Neil Young was doing the same damn thing twenty years earlier, so forget everything I just said.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:21 (twenty years ago) link

who are you talking to?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:22 (twenty years ago) link

I've been minorly obsessed with their first album ever since I "discovered" it for myself a few years ago. (I remember, back in high school, my friend playing the tape in her car over and over when she gave me a ride in the mornings, but I obviously wasn't listening.)

I've never heard such great suburban-basement teenage four-track rickety-proggy music (even if it wasn't really recorded under those conditions). The songs are just fantastic; each one has four or five distinct, individual instrumental parts that just kill. And wonderful melodies, lyrics, atmosphere - the works.

If anyone can suggest any other albums that approach the "feel" of this one in any way, please, lay 'em on me!

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:46 (twenty years ago) link

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:55 (twenty years ago) link

You're Living All Over Me is just so much genius... the warm and somnambulant production, the songs that warp from alt_byrdsy prettiness to absolute sabbath heaviness, for seemingly no reason; the songs about bugs and moths that are immediately smothered by avalanches of feedback... ah. yes.

bump.

Also, I have an instrumentation question. On "They Always Come" there's a change at about 30 seconds in, and there's this high pitched repeating sound which is almost like a really high register clav or bells or something. What is that??

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:13 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm a huge fan and don't mind saying it. I always remember a bit of a stigma around them.

Green Mind is where its at for me, whilst the others are more timely and easily placeable, Green Mind has a bit of a uniqueness about it that I like. I find it very similar to "Goo" by Sonic Youth in that it's the album-before-the-commercial-one where you can see some of the experiments with gloss coming through, but still with enough rough to make it a hearty meal.

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:27 (nineteen years ago) link

In the US, Goo and Green Mind were huge commercial ventures.

Spencer, I will take a listen tonight.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:35 (nineteen years ago) link

It was a real trip to see/hear Mascis this weekend at All Tomorrow's Parties. He played a song off Green Mind ("The Wagon" maybe?). He still shreds* and is loud as shit. He was shuffling around the fairgrounds the whole time mostly unbothered, in track jacket and stringy long grey hair.
Anyway, brilliant.

*I don't mind using "shreds" here as I think it's damned appropriate.

Sometime after Green Mind/Whatever's Cool With Me, J. began suffering from debilitating tendonitis in his left (chording) hand. His sets were limited to like 45 minutes. I haven't seen him since then but I'm wondering if he ever recovered from the tendonitis.

Merge is all over that shit. Early 2005, according to label dispatches. Obviously YLAOM and Bug are super-classic...Dinosaur is OK, everything else is diminishing returns and fine if you're a big fan but otherwise pretty unnecessary.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:25 (nineteen years ago) link

I think "Where You Been" is essential early 90s angst grunge. Mascis' delivery was perfect for every music writer that needed to cite "disaffected vocals."
Absolutely crushing guitar playing on there.

Dinosaur Jr may be my favourite American rock band of the last twenty or twenty five years. That's not as big a statement as it might sound to some, as there hasn't been much US rock in that time I've really liked much, but I love Dinosaur Jr. Mascis is certainly among my top five or ten rock guitarists.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:11 (nineteen years ago) link

They changed the course of indie music in Glasgow, they made rock music, loud guitars and guitar solos acceptable. The first time they played in Glasgow, EVERYBODY who was in an indie band at the time was in the audience. So you had guys like Norman Blake, who had short hair and played in the Boy Hairdressers, he disappeared for a while - came back with long hair, playing guitar solos and in Teenage Fanclub.

I should really pick up copies of "bug" and "green mind" at the very least. I used to really like them, but the whole parade of imitators pre nirvana breakthrough kind of killed that sound for me. I remember this indie disco I was putting in a sound system for, where EVERY FUCKING TRAKC THEY PLAYED copied the intro for "freak scene". I think it's long enough ago now that I'd probably still like the original/s.

(x-post, yes, out of the every track they played that night, about 9/10 of them were by pre-bandwagonesque tfc)

It's odd how they took "Show Me the Way" off of You're Living All Over Me and put "Just Like Heaven" on in it's place. I thought "Heaven" was a post-Bug single.

I hope in the remastering they took out the 2 second space between "Kracked" and "Sludgefeast" that was on the CD version.

What sort of crazy sense does that make? Repulsion would have been a better choice if they were going to fuck with the playing order. But I like Forget the Swan just fine where it is.

merge's press release + more about why there's not a lot of bonus material, etc:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dinosaur Jr. Reissues on Merge!!

On March 22nd, 2005 Merge records will reissue the legendary Dinosaur Jr. CDs – Dinosaur, You’re Living All Over Me, and Bug.

(Chapel Hill, NC) It’s hard to believe, but it was 20 years ago when Dinosaur first roamed the back roads and byways of central Massachusetts. J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph formed their band in 1984 in the sleepy college town of Amherst, MA, and went on to change the face of rock forever…whether they actually ever intended to or not.

Long before the folks in Seattle were raiding thrift stores for flannel, Dinosaur Jr. laid the groundwork for a seismic shift in the underground rock scene. These first three albums, with their sonic wall of melodic bass, furious drums and stunning guitar wizardry, coupled with an almost laissez faire vocal delivery, became the sonic blueprint for what would become known as “alternative rock” over the next decade. Dinosaur Jr. single-handedly moved the indie scene from the rigid ideology and rapid fire bursts of hardcore and post-punk into a new era of introspective yet no less powerful expression. Instead of dismissing the influences of 60s and 70s rock, as had been the rallying cry of punk, Dinosaur Jr. embraced the heavy guitar riffs and melodic underpinnings of a bygone era, and created a full on sonic assault that took the world by surprise if not by storm. Some folks called it the perfect union of Sonic Youth and Neil Young, and when it’s all said and done that’s as good a reference point as any.

The influence that Dinosaur Jr. has had on their peers and future generations of musicians/bands is immeasurable. Now, 20 years since the release of their self-titled debut that left folks scratching their heads (yet at the same time hungry for more) Merge is honored to bring these three classic CDs back into print after years of scattered availability and $40+ pricetags on Ebay and Amazon.

Originally released on two of the most influential independent labels of the times – Homestead and SST – Dinosaur, You’re Living All Over Me and Bug will now be available to an entirely new generation of music fans. If there is any justice these recordings will be just as influential the second time around…

All three CDs have been remastered and will be reissued with original cover artwork but the new booklets will contain never-before seen images that are sure to electrify longtime fans. Bonus materials include a rare live track – “Does It Float” – which captures the power and sheer chaos of early Dinosaur shows, as well as videos for classic tracks “Little Fury Things”, “Just Like Heaven”, “Freak Scene” and a recently-discovered, never before seen video for “No Bones”. Also included are extensive new liner notes for all three albums compiled by music writer/gadfly Byron Coley featuring interviews/commentary from Thurston Moore, Mike Watt and Robert Pollard. Acclaimed filmmaker Allison Anders also contributed liner notes for Bug. But really, who needs extra bells and whistles? These albums contain so much raw power and melodic tension that they speak well enough for themselves, as seminal pieces of American rock and roll history.

from mac:

we're proud to be reissuing these three records that, to us, were huge when they came out and are still hugely important today. i think they can be described, unlike most records that are casually given this title, as "classics". as such, having these albums in print and sounding great is in itself a reason for us to reissue these -- even if there were no bonus tracks of any kind.

the way these albums affected people when they were first released (when i'm sure most of us got them on LP) was without any of the covers or b-sides people are asking for them to contain now. For example, "Show Me the Way" was never on the album YLAOM, it was a bonus track the first time it appeared. Maybe that inclusion was against the band's will and they're rectifying that now? I don't know.

i love reissues that have tons of bonus stuff, and i understand not wanting to buy something more than once (it's bizarre how now albums that only came out 2 or 3 years ago are already being reissued), but i have to say: if you already own these and you are happy with the way they sound, there's no need to bitch and moan about it -- just don't buy them.

as a label we were up for any kind of reissue concept as long as it didn't impinge on the integrity of the original records. the final releases are the result of what the band wanted on them. i think there were two things going on with what the track listings ended up being: 1) a paucity of any kind of extra studio outtakes, etc. and 2) how happy / unhappy J/the band was with what did exist.

there is a live track as you can see, and excellent live Dino recordings exist, but i think both J and Merge thought that a great live collection was a separate project -- even gathering the material for these three albums has been a long process, and adding live albums to these releases would both raise the list price and would have meant that these records would have been out of print for at least another year.

extra things are great, the original classic albums are the best, and the remasters sound great (J attended). we knew not everyone would be pleased but then, when are they? and i take it back about bitching and moaning -- that's what msg boards are for...

It's kinda funny that they'd take off "Show Me The Way" but add "Just Like Heaven." I love both covers. I may buy Bug.

the one and only time I've heard Deep Wound was when I saw them, last Spring, at a benefit gig in Northampton, MA. J. played, Sebadoh, the Sonic Youth folks...and then Deep Wound kicked our ass for one song exactly.

Lee also joined J. on a stellar "Little Fury Things."

Last night I listened to 'Master Dik' by Sonic Youth, on which I believe Mr J lays down some superb fretwork on his bad-ass axe. It is very bad, ruining an otherwise perfectly good CD of 'Sister'.

I don't like reunion things all that much, but I will say that the noise the original threesome made live is an *utter joy* for your ears to behold. Really, I saw the Lou line-up 3 or 4 times and they absolutely destroyed my sense of where I ended and this huge sweet fog of sound began, sort of like My Bloody Valentine were trying to do, but there's no way they could even touch that bass sound.

We asked the kids in line what they were waiting for and when they said Nike's new Dinosaur Jr's, my gf and I were laughing at the name and wondering if they played "Little Fury Things" or something when you stepped NOT actually realizing they WERE designed by J Mascis!

Been listening to some Dino Jr lately. Where You Been was one of the first albums I ever bought. I'm kind of sad (but not surprised) to see no mention of the excellent Hand It Over on this thread. I think it might be the most consistent and varied of the Dino major label records. The solos on "Alone" slay me.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 8 November 2007 04:32 (sixteen years ago) link

I'll stump for Hand It Over, my 2nd favorite Dinosaur album after YLAOM, so good, so underrated, especially the middle stretch of the album from "Can't We Move This" to "Mick."

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 8 November 2007 04:48 (sixteen years ago) link

i think i've posted my love for 'hand it over' on some other dino jr thread, but allow me to say it again - so good! my fave dino jr album. i have a sneaking suspicion that kevin shields played guitar on the track 'i'm insane', even though it wasn't credited. at the very least, it sounds like he engineered the guitar sound on that track.

6335, Thursday, 8 November 2007 05:24 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, the liner notes only explicitly credit him with vocals on 2 other tracks but there's also the vague "some other stuff recorded at MBV studio with Kevin Shields" note, so who knows.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 8 November 2007 05:27 (sixteen years ago) link

the piccolo trumpet line in that song is one of the greatest single things in their entire catalogue. stays in my head for days sometimes

6335, Thursday, 8 November 2007 05:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Dino Jr is sort of an excercise in pass/fail. But if you listen to him shread the cover of Maggott Brain(with Mike Watt) - he gets at least a nod towards classic. If it matters, Goin Home is a great example of what he can do when he's not tryong trying to tear the roof off.

christoff, Thursday, 8 November 2007 13:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Glad to see some HIO love! Too bad it got lost in the shuffle when it came out. I do think there is some Kevin Shields influence in the production even if KS didn't actually do anything.

I was absolutely obsessed with them between the ages of 13 and 17, and loved everything by them--even and especially the Mike Johnson and then post-Murph years: Green Mind, Where You Been, Without a Sound, etc. But I've just come to the conclusion as an adult that they are bad... amazing that Lou Barlow thought he was losing something when he walked away from J Mascis. The guy was so arrogant and cut himself so short by being so arrogant. Being lazy and rude might be funny when the guy is 20 years old, but at 30 or 40? Imagine having Lou Barlow in your band (or someone of equal talent) and being rude to him, making him feel bad about his music, there is no excuse.
I feel like the guy who has really lost out in this nonsense "indie revival" of the last few years is Mike Johnson... he was great in that group and had a number of really good solo albums...

Green Mind is still farking ace, I know why they reformed but am a little non-plussed, ho-hum.

Sebadoh or Dinosaur JR is a tricky one, for me it's a straight out battle between Green Mind and Bakesale - GM was one of the first alternative or whateveryouwanttocallit (actually let's call it indie rock) but I was also superimpressed with bakesale, can't decide (what an awful question) so in conclusion both bands are quite good!

Man this used book store by me was having a sidewalk sale with just boxes of random ass cds on sale for a buck or less. It was just utter crap - probably more Windows 95 era game discs in the boxes than music discs and about 100 copies of each of those BMG sampler discs. Anyway, just as I was about to walk away, I spotted that one above and the JayLouMurph thing for 50 cents each. Made my week.

The only reason I mention it is that I heard Dinosaur Jr. on a college radio station the other day and it was jarring to realize that like 7 years ago 90% of the music on the same station was white-guys-playing-guitars music, and now that stuff seems to finally be out of style.

It's really wrong to aim this stuff at Dinosaur Jr., but that insufferable punk and classic rock fan "authenticity"/"this is REAL music" attitude was also present in 90s indie, and I was happy to realize that it apparently doesn't hold sway anymore.

It's probably just easier to dismiss today.

Maybe it's my age but I genuinely feel that they never surpassed 'You're living All Over Me" and believe me, I have purchased much DiJr since - Sebadoh, solo stuff etc.

The context of those guitar solos were truly new to my ears back then. Now they're like, "Here we go again, squall...squiggle, squeak ...." And Mascis' voice was better then? Oh and the tunes. Lyrics, i'm not too fussed.

Perhaps I should try again?

Is the remastered version of YLAOM any good?

Jessie Fer Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 12:34 (nine years ago) link

For me Bug is pretty close, too.

Evan, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 14:58 (nine years ago) link

Uh, at the risk of ruining the lovefest for their 80s stuff, I enjoy their reunion records more.

Tied To A Star is excellent!

I interviewed J when the first three LPs got reissued, and he said, re: Bug: “I interviewed Ozzy Osbourne once, and he said he hated Sabotage, that it just reminded him of Sabbath recording with lawyers sat in the studio. I guess I feel the same way about Bug.” I love Post and Freak Scene, obvs, but its the lesser album of that early trilogy to me.

Stevie, do you know if Mascis is touring w/ a band here in January? Must admit, not so much into J as acoustic minstrel

sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 15:49 (nine years ago) link

Press release doesn't state clearly, though I must say I've seen J play solo before, and it was pretty remarkable.

Thanks, couldn't see any info on his website either - but you're selling me on it now (he's playing a nice venue in Glasgow)

sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 16:27 (nine years ago) link

I saw him play the Underworld circa the Fog album, on his lonesome, and he wasn't really all that unplugged - strums acoustic while singing, but then cranks a pedal and fires up for the solos. That might not be your cup of tea, but it certainly was mine!

About the reunion albums: If you like Farm, I Believe In Sky is more in the same vein. The hard songs are a bit harder, but the songwriting is there.

Beyond is a good deal fuzzier, probably not as good as Farm, but some amazing tracks--"We're Not Alone," "Almost Ready," "This Is All I Came to Do," "It's Me"

They're not as strange or brilliant as Bug or You're Livin' All Over Me, but they're great straightforward rock albums and worth checking out

Without A Sound is the one I'd avoid; weakest material (ironically on the album with their biggest hit). Beyond is in hindsight a little weak, too, but I like I Bet On Sky as much as Farm.

I really like the new one and I've never really bothered with them before, where's best to go next?

Like I get the sense that his voice has improved with age? I've found some of the vocal straining actively offputting in the past.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 August 2016 07:40 (seven years ago) link

You're Living All Over Me is their best album overall, messy and psychedelic and wonderful. Where You Been probably the best of their major label era - the most anthems, the most guitar solo-age. But they've really never made a duff album AFAICT.

Yes it has pickles and chicken...but...it doesn't have mild cheese... (stevie), Thursday, 11 August 2016 08:31 (seven years ago) link

^^^ Both good suggestions, giving both 'extremes' of the per-reunion output. Otherwise, 'Beyond' (the first reunion record) is probably the most similar to the latest, and also has better tunes.

Steve Reich In The Afternoon (Against The 80s), Thursday, 11 August 2016 09:18 (seven years ago) link

Matt DC, if you like this one, you'll probably like the rest of their post-reunion output. Farm is sort of an outlier because it's jammier, with songs that stretch beyond the 8-minute mark, but the band is in top form and J's guitar work is incredible.

you think Lou Bega gave up after Mambo Number One??? (voodoo chili), Thursday, 11 August 2016 13:04 (seven years ago) link

Not a single weak track on YLAOM. Even "Lose." That song's ridiculous, it's basically 4 completely different cathartic bridges/choruses tied together, but it doesn't get any attention because it's a short little thing near the end of the album.

I never had a problem with Mascis' drawl, it's got the ability to slow down space-time just like his guitar, but liking or not liking a singer is just one of those things you can't really argue.

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 13:50 (five years ago) link

no, dino is just the trio. this was a one night only thing with matt valentine and john moloney and adam from sore eros and a guy on bass from....i can't remember what bands. he roadies for dino. he was great.

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 14:01 (five years ago) link

this is from the dino show at the local bar this year. also a wonderful night.

seeing J. with two other good guitarists was so cool though. such a great sound live.

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 14:04 (five years ago) link

yeah, J does a lot of overdubs in the reunion-era songs, so sometimes the long solo sections can sound slightly thin live. perhaps they've figured it out in the years since I saw them last.

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 14:14 (five years ago) link

BTW I saw Dino play six months ago and the guitar tech guy played some guitar during the gig. He didn't come out from over behind Lou's amps, but you could still see he to the side a bit. He faced the front from what I remember, it didn't look like they were hiding him, just he didn't leave his roadie area

i think they do double drums with john moloney during the wagon too sometimes. he roadies for them as well.

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 14:38 (five years ago) link

when dino played at the bar beforehand i was scared that j's stacks would kill me but they totally made it the perfect kind of loud for that show. there was a lot of family there. they didn't want to liquify anyone. still plenty loud though!

Saw them last night, and they sounded great.

Literally knew only one song of theirs before yesterday, from a mixtape someone made me long ago. But now I've been listening to that song (not played last night) over and over.

I consumed an awful lot of US indie rock as a schoolkid at the turn of the nineties and I'm increasingly thinking D.Jr stand up better than anything else I bought at the time. I didn't anticipate this. I largely tuned out after Where You Been, but the overwhelming bulk of their output to that point is good-to-great. Even Green Mind is at least 60% decent. I'm very gradually absorbing the post-reunion records...

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 21 July 2018 01:58 (five years ago) link

I mean they put out a lot of stuff, and for a few albums were getting increasingly better then j/they kinda fizzled out no?

F# A# (∞), Saturday, 21 July 2018 02:07 (five years ago) link

I loved Bug and YLAOM the most but 'lost track' of them when the re-recorded The Wagon wasn't as good as the Sub-Pop single. I guess they have made some other good albums.

J Mascis And The Fog (with Ron Asheton) live was better than any Dinosaur Jr. gig I'd seen.

Absolute Unit Delta Plus (Noel Emits), Saturday, 21 July 2018 04:33 (five years ago) link

Well I mean yeah. It’s fuckin Ron Asheton.

I’ve seen Dino Jr maybe like three times and it was always good. Friend of mine said he saw them once and J would hit THAT pedal and things went into totally painful/nauseating levels of tone and volume. Didn’t experience that for better or worse.

I know the answer @pitchfork .
A linkage this song with Japan is obvious. “Over Your Shoulder” was used in popular TV show called “Gachinko Fight Club” hosted by TOKIO, famous male band/talents.
On Feb. 6th, TOKIO’s current TV show “TOKIO KAKERU” seems picked up former member of https://t.co/DfBD7xCYEU

So did the TV show inspire viewers to seek out the original song; or is it charting simply due to being played in background of that widely-streamed scene (and machine-recognized for copyright/royalties purposes)?

It was a very dramatic moment to a memorable scene and it brought back a lot of memories for people who watched it the first time around. The replay went viral on ameblo & FC2 blogs, plus there are a ton of Youtube comments asking for the ID on various clips, also on Yahoo.jp chiebukuro (like Yahoo! answers but less babbies formed & more utility).

Heh I wouldn't say I like it more than YLAOM, but Bug feels super-slept on in comparison. The highs on Bug (for me: "They Always Come" & "No Bones" esp.) are as high as any of their albums. Not sure how dictator-y J was by this point but both Lou & Murph's performances are incredible.

Was kinda hoping this revive was for some concrete news on the new album. But glad to see it nonetheless.

I was listening to the Day of the Dead comp last night and the Kurt Vile cover of "Box of Rain" that features a Mascis solo came on and I realize that I can't think of many rock songs that wouldn't be immediately improved by a J solo. Hell, if Aerosmith wanted to re-record Just Push Play with Mascis playing every solo I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

they don't go "proggy" per se, but they do loosen up and jam a lot on farm. the early albums have a fair amount of weirdness, especially in the lou barlow contributions. recent albums have a few barlow contributions but his sensibility has grown closer to j's.
