Rap or otherwise. Inspired by the recent Ron Artest lunacy, it occurs to me: has an athlete ever made a record that's even tolerable much less decent? I say this as someone who can honestly say he's never bothered to listen to one, but I'm willing to be open-minded about this...to a point.

It was in no way grunge -- it was more of an REM-sounding trio thing. At the time that McDowell was pitching for the Indians, I was working at their then-flagship station, which was a sports-talk, and we used some of McDowell's stuff as bumper music for the air talent.

The winner here has to be Cassius Clay's pretty good cover of Stand By Me, but I'd also like to mention Bunker Hill, who made three classic raucous rock 'n' roll tracks way back - this was Link Wray and his Wraymen, with lead singer Dave Walker, who was a pro boxer. These are really GREAT records. A number of old R&B, soul and so on singers had been good athletes too, especially boxers - I seem to recall Screamin' Jay Hawkins had been some sort of golden gloves champ, whatever that is.

LA Rams and New York Giants footballer Roosevelt Grier has an album called 'Soul City'. There is a very good track called 'In My Tenement' on the Kent CD 'New York Soul Serenade'. Unsurprisingly, it is a big booming voice. It was produced by Bobby Darin, so no doubt we will all learn more about this particular project when the Kevin Spacey film comes out.

I used to have the 12" of Diamond Lights by Glenn and Chris (Messrs Hoddle and Waddle). I do believe that Ally C has a copy of a single released by Chris Waddle and Basile Boli, which must surely be the greatest thing ever committed to vinyl.

Haven't Vinnie Jones and Ian Wright tried to launch unsuccessful singing careers? (see also Gazza, Terry Venables, Ron Atkinson etc etc)

Torben Ulrich lost a tight five-setter vs John Newcombe in the last sixteen of the '68 US Open, which is pretty good going considering he was 40 by that time.

I fear that Pat Cash and John McEnroe may have may a record or two (Mac certainly toured with his own band, much to the growing disgust of his wife); Jo Durie certainly did (it was 'orrible) and Jim Courier has played drums with REM. Yannick Noah has had several hits in France.

It's for real, and it's not very good. Here's a lo-fi RM file, provenance unknown, that I found somewhere. I haven't heard the full-length yet, but if this is the single, I don't have high hopes for the rest, sheer novelty value aside.

Heard Cecil Taylor was a great basketball player, though he was considerably smaller than stereotypical players.

Was HR involved in anything organised athletically or just naturally athletic? Seen footage of those other DC types Fugazi pretty much slamdunking themselves through basketball hoops.
