Teedra Moses

What do people think of her? I've been listening to some of her tracks a lot lately, but I'm not sure if I love her or just find her intriguing. She's got a bit of that old-skool post-Kanye soul feel a la Amerie, but at times also has a late 80s/early 90s frostiness which is quite distinct - even, "Doin You", a more "modern" track, makes me think of something like Janet's "Miss You Much" as much as it does post-Timbaland stuff. Anyway, it's all really good, no matter what the style everything is really swirly and sparkly and sumptuous. Teedra's voice is a bit like Amerie and Beyonce mixed together, only with an endearing roughness around the edges.

Over to you...

all I've heard is "Be Your Girl", but I like it, mostly for the weird contrast between the dusty-sounding piano chords and the crisp drums and blippy sound effects.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I love this record and if PopMatters would ever post my freakin' review I'd link to it. Paul Poli is doing weird subtle things with production; I actually like his work on this record better than the two guest producers' stuff...and they're Ray-Ray Wiggins and Lil' Jon!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Al, check out the album's title track "Complex Simplicity" and "Still In Love".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually I think my favourite is "For A Lifetime" - stunning!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 8 October 2004 04:20 (nineteen years ago) link

"something bout your backstroke"

and don't tell me that jadakiss rap isn't hot on "you'll never find," he undercuts the song and then his own argument!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 8 October 2004 04:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Wow I hadn't heard "Backstroke" - it's amazing!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 8 October 2004 04:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Sounds great - but then I'm sad enough to track down anybody who even vaguely sounds like "Miss You Much".

Jedmond (Jedmond), Friday, 8 October 2004 05:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I should probably be careful not to overstate that influence - it was an example off the top of my head. But download "Backstroke" or "For A Lifetime" and see what you think.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 8 October 2004 15:01 (nineteen years ago) link

"For A Lifetime" really is the most amazing thing in the universe. Plus I feel like it vindicates my hard-to-explain fondness for Mis-Teeq's "Strawberrez". Plus "Complex Simplicity" is one of the most joyful bittersweet songs I've heard in ages, like an anthemic R&B version of Basement Jaxx's "All I Know", only actually *more* Prince.

That review is fantastic Matt - totally captured my feelings re the album. There are a few weak tracks, and sometimes with the songs I love I'm not even sure why I love them so much, but Teedra is just so, so fantastic that it's hard to keep track of criticisms. The album reminds me of Southern Hummingbird - by no means a perfect album but a very powerful one.

Everyone should get this album.

only heard a couple songs so far, but the album could indeed be *very* good. does "last day" actually sample boards of canada or is that just a similar sound? (if it is a sample, i think it'd be from "an eagle in your mind")(if i'm even remembering that right)

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 31 October 2004 14:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Can't remember the sound you're referring to offhand, but yeah I love "Last Day". "For A Lifetime" is my favourite in terms of cool sonix though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 31 October 2004 21:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks for mentioning this on the "undermentioned 2004 records" thread, Tim. The mix of late 80s top 40 RnB and Timbaland's Aaliyah production is pretty striking, especially on "Backstroke".

I think I would love Teedra if only for "Complex Simplicity" the song. It's one of the most... generous songs I've heard in ages. I want the Fantasia album to be like this.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I am currently hunting around the internet to see where I can get this as cheaply as possible.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I just realised that the vague ill-defined 80ishness of some of the tracks may be due to the fact that they sound like they were recorded using a Fairlight. At times i'm reminded of The Sensual World!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I love the fact that there are TWO different songs on the album that have the same theme as the song "1999". I will also append my brother's comment, upon seeing her picture in the CD booklet: "Fuck, she's hot."

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I found this one thru Hua Hsu's blog but might as well have gotten it from ILM since Finny's posting kept reminding me to check it out...thank god he did! Its a really weird album isn't it?

Tim, what do you think of the Lil Jon track? I like that he's continued working outside his popular template on the downlow. I don't know how i feel about the track though.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:17 (nineteen years ago) link

It's an odd track both for being Lil Jon and not sounding like what you'd expect, and for coming right after the two most classicist slow jam tracks on the album. I like it, but more for Teedra's performance than the groove - when she says "I damn near slapped her face" and "I may never, may never, may never, may never, may never wanna deal with this again" - lovely moments! She has a great intuitive sense for how to phrase a vocal.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Has anyone noticed the shoddy production that opens "You Better Tell Her?" It's on my promo copy and the MP3 that I downloaded to make sure my ears weren't crazy -- a sort of wooshing, poorly-burned-CD sound that creates really nasty polyrhythms. WTF? Otherwise, that track's my favorite on the record -- Lil Jon really knows how to treat the ladies.

Rich (Rich), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah that's on my copy too but I assumed that it was the MP3 rip.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I still haven't marshalled my thoughts about this fucking amazing work into any semblance of order yet, but "Caution" needs to be mentioned, especially that wonderful image of 'red hot scowling'. Teedra's voice has this unbelievable clarity to it.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 10:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm glad you like it Alex.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 10:30 (nineteen years ago) link

"Teedra's voice has this unbelievable clarity to it."

Yeah this is spot on. It combines with her unusually vivid and visual lyrics to make her songs seem very filmic; and then Paul Poli's production is so frequently cinematic. My favourite line may still be the one that Matt quotes in his article from "Backstroke": "picture me in one of those two-seater things, top down so thoughts of you are in the breeze, and the wind, and the wind, and the wind is in my hair..."

But I also love the opening lines in "For A Lifetime": "you give and you give, but you never seem to get back in return/what you give, till your heart's a thirsty third-degree burns."

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 10:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Something else which really stands out about the album is how sparse it sounds at first listen - really, it's just that stark, clear voice and a beat, and maybe one sample, pushed forward in the mix. But there are so many interesting things going on in the background! And this combines with your point about Teedra's lyrics - because the voice is so upfront (and because she avoids melisma, and makes a point of enunciating every word), the listener is forced to engage with exactly what she's saying.

All of this is in contrast to the sophisticated, slightly hazy, evening-dress-and-glass-of-wine image which Teedra projects. The effect is rather like Sade brought suddenly into really sharp focus.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 11:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha the Teedra Moses/Stina Nordenstam connection! (That's not even a joke, they both share a very... crystalline quality.)

I haven't done an interview in about a YEAR. I am actually a little nervous. About two weeks ago I had a daydream about interviewing Teedra, during which I came up with lots of interesting and awesome questions. Needless to say I can remember none of them now.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 2 June 2005 09:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Take her shopping! That could help.
I think I get vv limited time with her, I am not sure if this makes it worse or better (ans: worse)

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 2 June 2005 09:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Ask her for a new album post haste. Tell her she and Kiley should team up and lay the smackdown on Whitney and Mariah. Ask her if she danced in the 'Dip It Low' vid and tell her she has fabulous taste in outfits.
i love the be your girl single, but as for the rest of the album, it seemed pretty below-par. nice voice, just not that great songs. she sings what seems like the same melody song after song.

ppp, Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:26 (eighteen years ago) link

they're really slow burners. the title track is one of my favourite songs ever, I think.

the cover of the UK release of the album is diffeent to the import I bought, I worry that this means BONUS TRACKS.

It does. I used iTunes to merge the tracklistings, though I still don't think I've completed either edition.

stelfox, Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:37 (eighteen years ago) link

well, slow burners maybe, or maybe theyre just not that great, actually. they dont seem particularly well written, theyre just listenable i find cos she has a nice voice. im selling my cd on ebay. its like a lot of R&B albums, one or two great songs, the rest is filler. i was hoping for better from her.

ppp, Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:43 (eighteen years ago) link

ppp, Friday, 3 June 2005 13:21 (eighteen years ago) link

PPP, listen to the section from "You Better Tell Her" through to "Last Day" again. I find the charge of weak songs quite surprising, esp. as if anything I'd probably consider "Be Your Girl" to be one of the weaker tracks on that score (relatively - this was my equal fave album from last year so all such distinctions are pretty pedantic).

Lex is OTM about the title track (occupies the same place in my heart), but yeah, I adore "Outta My Head" as well, and I like the way that on that portion of the album every song sounds like a massive switch-up after the previous one.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:30 (eighteen years ago) link

I didn't I'm afraid Barima. We talked about the impossibility of finding decent jewellery in Camden (she was confused about this before I informed her that Camden is the hellhole of London), the last fight she got in, and she gave me a sneak preview of this song she's writing called 'The Whole World Is A Ghetto'. She's really sweet and very thoughtful, and she wore these amazing red-tinted shades throughout.

I kind of need better dictaphone skills, though.

Teedra has "Take My Love Away" playing on her myspace page, it sounds ace, very sad and gentle and reflective, gorgeously produced as per.

Teedra's voice is just...I can't think of another singer whose voice cuts into me as much as hers.

Nice to find out that her favourite song is Starpoint's "Object Of My Desire"! And that she started out writing songs over the top of Prince grooves, which makes a lot of sense obv.

so i went back and forth for a bit on 'so kool', wondering if this was really what i wanted from teedra, then i realised i couldn't actually stop listening to it. she sounds more subdued than in the past but it fits the song perfectly. it's so lush and pastoral - very 'rock the boat' - and the chorus is just beautiful, "don't you call me today" totally gets me.

Just got an e-mail today from the Washington DC promoter regarding Teedra this week in DC (it's a smaller room than for her last local appearance):

Sweet! Thanks for the heads up. Saw her play a short but sweet set at the Black Cat almost 2 years ago. Hope she plays some new stuff this time. Lionhearted is easily among my favorites of the year so far.

I guess I could talk about new Teedra joints on the Rolling R&B thread, but if Teedra visited me in my dreams tonight and I had to admit I'd been intermingling her new material with just any R&B i'd be really ashamed.

Anyway, LOVE this slowburning stalker of a kiss-off jam:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_HPsA0WzRs

I also didn't even know she'd released a new mixtape this year. When oh when will Young Lioness drop? It's gettin' so the "Young" is becoming tenuous.

Tim F, Sunday, 20 September 2009 12:00 (fourteen years ago) link

brainwasher and i both mentioned the mixtape on rolling r&b in like january you funky-addled clod!!

'to hell with it' is a good song (most likely better on paper than 'everybody rock') but part of me is hesitant to greenlight her boldest yet recorded foray into darkest jazmine sullivania - i've always loved her easy, big sisterly relationship with modernity you see. also she loves rolling r&b and is honoured every time she's mentioned there.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 21:58 (fourteen years ago) link

The problem with rolling threads is that I feel like I have to watch every embedded youtube and not participate otherwise - and then there's never time to do so.

This problem doesn't arise when you're on the Executive Board (e.g. funky house sceptics) but as a simple non-executive member it often feels easier just to skip the meetings so no-one realises you've been shirking your duties.

LOL "Sullivania". I like her soulful stuff as well but I do occasionally get the impression sometimes with that kinda mixtape cut that she kinda just sleepwalked through the songwriting process (singing always spot on obv) because she finds that kind of thing so easy now. On one level this is compelling because it's like Essence Of Teedra, but on another level it ends up standing in the shadow of her first album (having a hard-to-top debut not necessarily being a "problem" of course).

While I'd be concerned if she decided just abandon that and do all electrosheen all the time ("Everybody Rock", "So Kool" etc.) I get the sense that she thinks through her woodland forays a little bit more than her open house tours.

yeah im not seeing how any of those are better. theyre all very samey, not really that well defined as songs, and not really that special enough groove-wise or melodically to compensate. teedras got a lovely voice and could be a great singer but be your girl is her only great song. the rest is pretty ho-hum filler. most of that first album still sounds like b-list 90s R&B. the type of thing id have expected from tara thomas, kim swain or someone, though both of those artists' better known songs are still better than the top 5 listed above.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 11:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Some days "Complex Simplicity" is my favourite song EVER.

U mad titchy.

Tim F, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 11:40 (fourteen years ago) link

dude.

that song isnt even on the level of mona lisa. (eg wanna please u). the reasons i liked teedra is cos she reminded me of all the 90s female R&B i liked. but apart from be your girl, its all signifiers (warmth, no euro-ish synths, rhode-ish keyboards, more of a 'soul' rather than pop voice, etc etc) and no songs.

tim, you heard her tracks from this year right? her mixtape was nice bit the two really crucial tracks were "so kool" and "put it in the wind" - plus "to hell with it" and "everybody rock" which leaked later in the year.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 12:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I've listened to them on youtube but the only one I actually have is "So Kool" (which is brilliant). It's hard to place teedra tracks quality wise on one or two listens but they all sounded pretty great.

Tim F, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 12:23 (fourteen years ago) link

one month passes...

there's some inevitably good bits on royal patience (the new mixtape) but altogether it's maybe the first time i've felt i was supporting a sentimental pet cause (though still a deserving one) rather than honouring the righteous fire of a colossal artistic injustice etc.

like i'm not sure if it's just some sort of general frustration or if i'm onto something but for instance 'g-tight', the 2002 poli paul offcut on here, seems to stick out by a fair margin in terms of its all-in-one elegantly assured ladygangsta, even though all its elements are notionally present in the other tracks.

r|t|c, Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:14 (fourteen years ago) link

hmm that's not the one that stood out to me - so far i'm about "oh love", "kisses never taste so sweet" and "international playboi" - but it's definitely...not the kind of thing with which i'd feel able to convince anyone not already on board. but then, the same was true for the last mixtape apart from the still-towering "so kool" and "put it in the wind". have to wonder where teedra is going these days though.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:30 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah obviously i think i'm just latching onto the closest thing to complex simplicity with its fully-formed implicit context. i do like all those other songs but like you say i've rather lost the thread of how they're supposed to hang together now.

r|t|c, Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i assume she's not signed atm? i really want another album from her - i think she'd think more about how the songs should hang together in that situation, rather than dumping a zip of badly-tagged songs at wildly varying bitrates on the world.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:39 (fourteen years ago) link

omg i know right? first thing i wanted to do was post here about banishing a bitch for bad mp3/m4a grabbag tagging but then i thought about how she's prolly just sat at home in front of an old imac listening to kings of leon and i thought better of it. plus i'm sure she knew i secretly enjoy correcting that shit anyway.

no, still not signed as far as i know. probably end up on hyperdub at this rate.

r|t|c, Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:50 (fourteen years ago) link

kinda weird how she never even did any more outside writing after 'dip it low', you'd think that wouldve kept her name in the industry at least and been a nice little earner to boot.

r|t|c, Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:53 (fourteen years ago) link

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:54 (fourteen years ago) link

they could call it 'simple complexity'.

r|t|c, Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:57 (fourteen years ago) link

you know that would actually be really great. funky remixes have been keeping teedra's name alive for a while now anyway.

i think she's done the ~focusing on being a mother~ thing?

as much as badu likes to call herself an analogue girl in a digital world, i get the distinct impression that it's teedra who's constantly asking her desktop "what does this do?", i suspect she may not even know what a bitrate is.

Yeah this makes a lot of sense to me. I think people hate the big KOL singles out of a sense that they're something that should be hated, that they allow the public to indulge in retrograde taste etc but really I can so imagine Teedra vibing on the way their tunes hang together.

TM: I have an album scheduled for August.

WCP: How is this version different than the one planned for a few years ago?

TM: I gave away a few of the songs scheduled to be on The Young Lioness... I held on to the ones that meant a great deal to me. I've settled into the sound of The Lioness and it is strong but subtle... its champagne soul. It feels good, it's grown up and it's in the pocket.

WCP: Do you have any interest in writing songs for others anymore?

TM: I like writing songs... period. If I write a song that someone wants to sing cool. I would love for them to have it. otherwise, I'm just writing songs. They're not particularly for anyone.

WCP: What artists are you listening to?

TM: I like Adele. I like J. Monet. I've been listening to Ahmad Jamal and Coltrane more recently. Sade...

WCP: Do you still listen to gospel? Sing in church when you're home?

TM: I listen to gospel when I go to church and sometimes on Pandora. I'm not up to date on whats really going on in gospel like I should be, though. I don't sing in church. I want to start singing at my church here in Miami... but I'm never home for choir practice.

Perfect? I don’t even know what that is, but I just really want it to stand out to me. That’s the hardest part, getting me on board like everything is good. "I almost didn’t put out Luxurious underGrind because I was like, ‘Ughhh, this is just not good enough,’ but I had to step away from it and go back and listen to it and say ‘No, no, this is good, let’s go!’ So that’s kind of how I have to do it sometimes, but I’m not trying to be perfect. I don’t think there is such a thing.

Um. So the Euro edition of Complex Simplicity had a Truth Hurts/Raphael Saadiq featuring remix of Be Your Girl that samples Juicy Fruit?

yup, always loved that - feels like a quiet, understated triumph in contrast to the original's pleading neediness. the UK album also had this excellent song on it, if anyone's not heard it

http://www.discogs.com/Teedra-Moses-Youll-Never-Find-A-Better-Woman/release/1564893

along the lines of 'still your girl' there was also this exactly what you'd expect but still dece mix of 'you'll never find' interpolating 'everybody loves the sunshine'

kinda dressed itself as a bootleg but as tvt themselves put it out on the low i would suspect it's canon

this link to a mix it's in still works:

did not know that! is he credited for anything besides 'vocal arrangement' per wiki? seems like such a lost opportunity that he hasn't gone back and worked with teedra more since then

not per discogs - do have the cd in a box somewhere but i doubt anything else is there to be found really

http://www.songwriteruniverse.com/ne-yo.htm

in this interview he says he met scott storch while working on it, and then came 'let me love you', then etc

I didn't know about Ne-Yo either!

More reasons to love Complex Simplicity.

something i didnt know wot i only learned today: according to wiki ne-yo "...helped with the musical arrangement on the Teedra Moses debut Complex Simplicity."

Thanks, Lex; checking it out right now.

And I think I've said this before, but I'm pretty sure Katy B is not a thing that exists in America.

Evan R, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:33 (twelve years ago) link

haha well katy's been going on about what a genius teedra is since forever! so i have had these thoughts. it's more apparent in the songwriting, you know that deceptively casual way of phrasing something then dropping a really startlingly poetic image in the middle of it, than the singing

lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:33 (twelve years ago) link

I'm pretty sure Katy B is not a thing that exists in America.

it took a while but lots of US journalists started talking about her last year.

ULTIMATE CULT HEROES
5. TEEDRA MOSES
Chosen by: Katy B
When I was about 15 my friend’s dad was always in touch with new soul records. He put his daughter onto Teedra Moses and we rinsed the life out of ‘Complex Simplicity’. She’s been out of the loop since her record label went bust, and has been writing for other artists and releasing mixtapes. But you know what? I want a new album, Teedra!

r|t|c, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

they're singing does seems similar though in that they both have a remarkable clarity in their voices

prolego, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

^ yes. it's also true what lex said about the songwriting but you can also hear little moments where the capabilities of their voices converge and theyre just alike

seems very obviously an album katy has been karaokeing since forever

r|t|c, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:45 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah but Katy B is a boring, middle of the road Noxzema girl pop singer, while Teedra Moses is, you know, interesting and talented

Evan R, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:46 (twelve years ago) link

TALiB KWELi SODMG (The Reverend), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:47 (twelve years ago) link

yeah guess she can't push the envelope to its very bleeding edge like miguel does every single time huh

r|t|c, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:49 (twelve years ago) link

i was just about to type almost exactly that sentence except with grimes, though miguel works too

lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:51 (twelve years ago) link

hahaha, ok, I'll back down from the Katy B bashing. I shouldn't try to troll too hard about an artist I clearly don't understand (and probably wasn't meant to understand) anyway.

Evan R, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link

miguel is amazing tho. please leave the playing yourselves to evan.

TALiB KWELi SODMG (The Reverend), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

15th anniversary edition of Complex Simplicity is out, with some added tracks. It’s on Spotify as well, from where the original album has been absent for a long time, at least where I live.

She’s doing a tour in the US right now and will also be doing a couple of shows in the UK in February.
