There's almost a blanket concensus that they turned shit years ago, for which I am very glad.

"that's not just a current meme, is it? that's a timeless one.

This all contributes to my theory that "There's A Riot Goin' On" has not quite been given its due because of racism, i.e., people can't handle an album that is conceptual, serious, cynical, and experimental from a black artist whom they just want to talk about partying, feelin' groovy, and holding hands with the world.

Hmmm ... what about Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye's work from around the same time?
I personally think "Riot" doesn't get its due because conventional wisdom states that Sly was a washed-up drugged-out fuckup by 1971, and therefore he couldn't possibly have made a great record.

hurting: not so sure i can agree with you on riot, because i'm pretty sure that one has gotten plenty of critical love (it's the public that wasn't so quick to embrace it), and because marvin gaye and stevie wonder, among others, got a shitload of commercial and critical love at the same time for conceptual, serious, cynical, experimental albums. if riot did indeed get less than its fair share, i'd argue that's because of the public's general prejudice against anyone, black or white, playing against type (i.e. changing course sharply and suddenly).

Others have also brought up Wonder and Gaye to me when I make this argument, but I think the difference is that What's Goin' On and a lot of Wonder's stuff still have this facile, sentimental "message" to be taken home.

I guess I'm thinking more of the public in general than critics. Then again, maybe the public just doesn't like cynical albums period, white or black. My theory does not appear to be fully baked yet upon further scrutiny.

Wouldn't "Wonder and Gaye" have been a great duo name?

Teehee. I'm not quite that old yet.

Actually, my knowledge of Radiohead is limited to the overplayed singles (WHICH, GODDAMMIT I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED "HIGH & DRY", I WAS IN COLLEGE, DON'T TAKE THIS AWAY FROM ME, ARGLE BLARGLE) and my Autechre-fellating co-worker playing "Everything In Its Right Place" too loudly, which usually leads to me trying to organize a singalong by proclaiming "Everybody sing as loudly and badly as you can!!! Ev'ry-thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing!!!"

I mean, maybe if I'd never heard the Orb, Banco De Gaia, The JAMMS, Aphex Twin, or ANY OTHER FUCKING AMBIENT ACT IN MY LIFE, I'd have embraced Radiohead's later output, but to me it sounds about ten years too late.

Hurting, you just made me sob a billion tears. :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

(*sob* Also, this opinion was espoused by every single major music publication throughout the '80s and '90s, wasn't it? *sob*)

EVERYONE OUTSIDE THE FAN COMMUNITIES WHO CLAIMS TO LIKE DURAN DURAN DON'T SHOW IT WHEN IT ACTUALLY COUNTS (E.G. WHEN IT COMES TIME TO MAKE THE REQUISITE BEST-OF LISTS) AND THAT, AT TIMES, SEEMS TO INCLUDES PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE ON THIS FORUM. (Sorry, folks, for dragging out the broken record here -- this has just become an increasingly more tender sore spot with me, esp since I was SURE I would see certain "in defense of" or "why they're great" things happening that aren't happening.)

(JaXoN and Alex in NYC completely OTM re: JLo, BTW.)

Ever-Ready Daisy Chain (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, c'mon! Disco was a party that anyone and everyone could join; it was music minus the cult of personality, it knew no shame, and there was absolutely no topic/genre it was afraid to tackle/subsume/diminish. What more could you ask for?

Also -- this: I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THE SOLO WORK OF LOU REED IS MORE HIGHLY REGARDED THAN THAT OF ANY OF, I DON'T KNOW, SAY, THE MONKEES. OR DURAN DURAN. OR WHOEVER. YOU GET THE IDEA. -- I'm considering a true example of "damning with faint praise". Thanks, but no thanks.

LES CLAYPOOL'S BASS PLAYING JUST SOUNDS LIKE A SWARM OF FAT, ANGRY, WINDED HORNETS.

That sounds like a compliment. Did you mean it that way? If not, is he really that canonical?

I love avant electronica but I still think Radiohead adds a lot to it (in the sense that Amnesiac offers you something different from Drukqs or Draft 7.30 not that it's inherently better), first, by incorporating it into creatively constructed song form WHICH IS CHANGING THINGS AND ADDING SOMETHING, as well by the way that modern jazz elements are used. i.e. nothing on any Aphex albums (and I have most of them) sounds quite like "Life In a Glasshouse" or "Pyramid Song".

And, heh, I don't think minimal techno is necessarily all about sex, melody, or dancefloor fun.

THE PRIMARY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MANY NEW AGE RECORDS AND MANY TECHNO/AMBIENT AND DRONE RECORDS IS DEMOGRAPHIC

Well, what is new age? I associate the term with really soft pop/song-oriented music with really high performance and production values that has 'spiritual' leanings and incorporates elements of non-Western music, like Enya or Enigma/Dead Can Dance/Delirium. But I've also seen the term applied to things like David Hykes or Meredith Monk or Philip Glass or Arvo Part or Theo Bleckmann. In which case, that's the biggest compliment in the world!

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND WOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED ALL THAT AVANT-GARDE (CERTAINLY NO MORE THAN, SAY, THE YARDBIRDS) IF IT WASN'T FOR JOHN CALE'S CV.

Heh. I knew my vagueness would get me into trouble...It's a valid question, as "new age" is so much more a marketing category than a valid genre that Borders recently changed the category name to the all-but-meaningless "lifestyle music."
My basic point is something about the irony of maligning a genre as a whole which includes some good music that but for it's marketing category / signifiers would be given a fair listen.

Usually unmelodic crap, like most 70s funk and virtually all African American music from the recent 20 years.

Is this suppposed to be ironic? Because if not, it's the single most stupid thing I've read on ILM. So far.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Nirvana doesn't do anything for me. I am shocked when I see them anywhere near the top of any list. Maybe I heard it too much on the radio.

I find Bonnie "Prince" Billy utterly unremarkable. I've only heard one of his albums - once - and it hasn't compelled me to listen again.

The Beatles are OK.

Disappointed by the low standards here for "blasphemy."

Anyhow, here's my feeble attempt:

THE STROKES SOUND EXACTLY LIKE THE VELVET UNDERGROUND
People are really starting to talk out of their ass on this thread.

-- M@tt He1geson

That was simply stating a fact.
And I love the Strokes, but darling, the more songs they make, the more similar it gets.

thats not a fact at all! the strokes have never sounding anything like the velvets. or television either. darling.

-- latebloomer: The Corridor (Yes, The Corridor)

No, not at all like Television, that's something the press came up with in one of their crazy connections. But they do sound like Velvet Underground, and Julian Casablancas is a self-assumed Lou Reed fan.
...Darling.

Caroline loves stars, Friday, 9 December 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

how do they sound like the Velvet Underground?

latebloomer: The Corridor (Yes, The Corridor) (latebloomer), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

though slayer & old-school metallica still kick that nightwish bullshit's ass.

latebloomer: The Corridor (Yes, The Corridor) (latebloomer), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

Yes, ok, Slayer and early Metallica excepted.

moley (moley), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

First of all, Julian Casablancas' voice is an absolute rip off of Lou Reed's bored way of singing; both always sound like they're bored or drunk or stoned. Also their voices are very similar in their tones; grave and sometimes hoarse.
The guitars sound so similars that it is easy to mistake one for another. Especially in the Strokes' upcoming album: now we can actually understand what Julian is saying, and the way the album sounds like two original songs and their several varieties always brings White Light/White Heat to my mind.

Caroline loves stars, Friday, 9 December 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

"both always sound like they're bored or drunk or stoned. Also their voices are very similar in their tones; grave and sometimes hoarse."

yes, these are qualities exclusive to lou reed. sure.

i understand where some superficial comparisons between them come from, but they don't really sound alike.

anyway, I AM NOT GOING TO ARGUE ABOUT THE STROKES OVER THE INTERNET. I KNOW, I KNOW, I PICKED THE SCAB IN THE FISTR PLACE AND ITS BLEEDING. BUT NOW I POUR ANTISEPTIC.

A lot of these posts are getting kinda wishy-washy, and that's violating the spirit of the thread, I think. Comparing the Strokes' sound to any other band isn't particularly blasphemous, is it? Better you should try something like this: MARVIN GAYE'S "LET'S GET IT ON" and "SEXUAL HEALING" ARE EXTREMELY TEDIOUS, ABOUT AS EROTIC AS A JACK LaLANNE INFOMERCIAL AND CAN'T HOLD A SCENTED CANDLE TO TIM BUCKLEY'S "STARSAILOR", AS FAR AS SEX MUSIC GOES.
