"I Got That Work" is a favorite of mine, although it's hard to keep up attention throughout - its a long album and the misogyny can wear on one's spirit. Although in the correct context its superb. The juxtaposition of sexy, slinky pop and horribly offensive, misogynistic lyrics on tracks like "Snake" make them all the more fascinating to me.
Also someone discuss UNLV because I want to hear more. And what's the source - I read somewhere that Mannie used to work w/ Steve Silk Hurley, and I'd like to hear about this and what evidence exists etc.
ANYway...S/D

Personally, if you're talking about albums, i think CMB albums were at their most unlistenable 97-00.
Here's what i wrote about UNLV if you're interested: http://governmentnames.blogspot.com/2004/08/headed-2-da-classics-vol-1.html
Currently my favourite CMB song is "Cash Money Millionaire" by Lil Wayne off his new cd, it's really dense and melodic and has this disgusting fat keyboard noise that sounds like the devil talking. And Lil Wayne is a really nice rapper now.

I like what you wrote on UNLV - thanks a bunch.
Not to ride the fence or anything but I'm somewhere in between Jess and scg on this one....I certainly don't think CMB were unlistenable from 97-00! But they did have their fair share of shit tracks. Most definitely. "Shine" is definitely one of my all-time favorite hip-hop tracks though. Jess I agree about Jazze Pha although he'll always have a spot in my heart for "Dro in Da Wind".
Cash Money is nowhere near as good now as they used to be of course.
Which B.G. album is the one to get though? No one's even mentioned him and he's supposed to be one of the best..."Bling Bling" is classic of course.
― djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)
2. "Jazzy Bitch". Has the beautiful "Human Nature" sample, a typical Mannie rhythm with gun shot snares and tic-tac hi-hat. Tec-9 says "Well as a matter of fact i like the girl who sucks the ball-sack", i disagree though, it always feels like when you get kicked in the balls and they kind of dissapear into your stomach and turns me off a bit, it's alot nicer if they're just licked.
haha

fuck everyone talking about cash money falling off. old cash money can barely even fuck with the stuff they're doing now.the last big tymers album big money heavyweights is in the top five cash money releases of all time. so many good songs on that. it's the introduction to the new cash money philosophy. funny and smiling and no more harsh cold beats unless someone really wants to do a song about kidnapping or guns. the last juve album was really good and the lil wayne cd is fucking amazing and ten times better than anything he did before. get excited about that mannie solo too!

Okay "Snake" is great, if a bit disturbing.

― Tim F, Monday, 12 July 2010 11:30 (fifteen years ago)
'great but a bit disturbing' is p much the deal when it comes to 'i got that work' ... its a comedy record w/ a punch you in the gut effect (plus the occasional serious rap from the hot boys)

i love mannie's beats, but none of the sounds in that track are especially out? live bass + live guitar + one synth sound? he's got some crazier-sounding beats, sure, but mostly i think it's his sense of melody that sets him apart.
― bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Friday, 4 February 2011 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

kinda odd to think about cash money, which had a fairly unified aesthetic and production approach, disintegrating and recombobulating over the years and ending up as this splintered identity-free umbrella for like the wayne/drake/minaj axis and rich gang and shit. mannie's departure is the obvious transitional moment but i feel like it came earlier, maybe when they ditched that pen & pixel cover art style? 500 degreez?
