Hot Chip - C/D?

This is the Hot Chip "Coming on strong"-thread. I think it's brilliant. Home-made sloppy r'n'b electronics with sensitive vocals. Not entirely unlike the Junior Boys. What do you think?

Hanna (Hanna), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

not sure. played a few times hoping for it to change my world a la reviews in certain places. loved the single .. but rest of the lp sounds like an in-joke between mates to me .. very different to their first ep which was more typical guitar acoustics lo-fi stuff. will be trying the lp again tomorrow to see if i get the moshi moshi love thing going again. (i love other stuff on moshi and so feel weird not giving the Chip 100% ..)

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

From their label I far prefer Unsound from the stuff I've heard. Greater use of texture.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, it's definitely not change-the-world material, and completely un-dance-able, but quite possibly the best background music this millennium. ("Background music" in the term's very best sense, that is.)

This band is amazing! Why so little about then?

Sam Hunt (robosam), Sunday, 6 March 2005 06:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed love their "No More Master" on the Kitsune X comp.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Biiig ol' C. I love these guys, especially "Sexual Chocolate" and the Four Tet remix of "The Ass Attack."

Telephonething, Wednesday, 6 April 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

they are nice people, well the 2 i have met are. THeyre good live too

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"Bad Luck" is amazing, a year later.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 7 April 2005 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

what's their EP on Victory Garden like?

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 7 April 2005 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

very diff to the lp.

a lot more acoustic .. no electro toys in use ...

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 7 April 2005 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The album was a big summer favourite of mine last year - it soundtracked hot lazy days really well - but the appeal wore off over the autumn. Definitely a "used groove" for me, as Grandmaster Flash used to say.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 7 April 2005 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

this is proto dud

Joris (rizzx), Thursday, 7 April 2005 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i got tired of the flipflopping clever/irreverent then tender/sincere lyrics. liked the music and voices a lot. and feel they'll improve with age. a good start but not C or D.

Classic summer album. Playboy is an excellent driving song:

Driving in my Peugeot heyyeah
20 inch rims with the chrome now heyyeah
Blazing out Yo La Tengo heyyeah
Driving around Putney with the top down heyyeah

pinder (pinder), Thursday, 28 July 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

i love "shining escalade"!

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 28 July 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

"sexual chocolate"!!

new EP "barbarian" is more excellent stuff from hot chip. 4 songs.

"no fit state" is the high point.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...

everything i've heard by this lot has been ace so far.

what's the score? do they have a proper album out?
the track that DFA remixed is called 'just like we'. that's ace too.

piscesboy, Monday, 19 December 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

they have two albums and a new ep.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 19 December 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

I was totally going to start a "Hot Chip suck" thread but it turns out nobody really cares about them. I like the Beta Band and Junior Boys, so you think this would work but it doesn't. It fucking sucks. Boring.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 15 January 2006 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Into my slsk queue it goes

disco violence (disco violence), Monday, 16 January 2006 00:22 (twenty years ago)

totally agreed Zwan. I don't get it either. Piffle. Drivel. Slop. putrid excrement smeared on fried bread.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Monday, 16 January 2006 01:34 (twenty years ago)

i like it quite a lot

nervous (cochere), Monday, 16 January 2006 01:36 (twenty years ago)

this record is terrible. do we really need a breathy, "sincere" ween?

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Monday, 16 January 2006 02:36 (twenty years ago)

millions of post-grads etc.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 16 January 2006 02:49 (twenty years ago)

"etc." = can't be wrong?

disco violence (disco violence), Monday, 16 January 2006 04:29 (twenty years ago)

Oh man. Wait. Does it get worse after the first two tracks? 'Cause if that's the case, for possibly the first time ever, ILM's hatred isn't being hyperbolic enough.

disco violence (disco violence), Monday, 16 January 2006 04:31 (twenty years ago)

This article makes them sound better than they are, I'm thinking.

disco violence (disco violence), Monday, 16 January 2006 04:42 (twenty years ago)

i'm not wild about Coming on Strong, but "Over and Over" is the fucking shit and i bet the DFA produced album is great. their latest live shows were supposedly great

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Monday, 16 January 2006 05:47 (twenty years ago)

This album is soooo bad... perhaps worse than The Eagles Of Death Metal.

Dom iNut (donut), Monday, 16 January 2006 06:34 (twenty years ago)

the live show (back during cmj) was AWFUL, i left after 3 songs. a whole bunch of messy crap soul whining/cowbell banging singer wearing sunglasses/unattractive man wanking on some kind of microkorg-nord lead atrocity.

i can't think back to this experience without cringing.

bell labs (bell_labs), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

I thought they weren't bad live. It's when I checked out the album that i was unimpressed.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 16 January 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

the only track of theirs that I really like is "just like we (breakdown)" .... probably because it's sincere in its sappiness ... the joke factor of their other stuff turns me off.

Renard (Renard), Monday, 16 January 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Don't be mean to Hot Chip, you guys!

nancyboy (nancyboy), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 11:07 (twenty years ago)

haha uh I like this a lot

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 11:15 (twenty years ago)

"etc." = can't be wrong?

no, have a need for a breathy, "sincere" Ween. I have not yet tried the CD myself.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 11:18 (twenty years ago)

I quite like Hot Chip. Over and Over was one of my favourite songs of the latter part of 2005.

klee (klee), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 12:27 (twenty years ago)

what record are you all on about?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 12:48 (twenty years ago)

hot chip, "coming on strong"

do you like it?

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 12:57 (twenty years ago)

i've not heard it - has it been reissued? they were fkn great when i saw them live.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 13:17 (twenty years ago)

DFA / Astralwerks just put it out in the U.S.

there's also the Over and Over / Just Like We single, which I guess is a preview of their second record

Renard (Renard), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:14 (twenty years ago)

I have a Hot Chip cdr release from over 3 years ago. Can I sell it for hundreds of pounds?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:24 (twenty years ago)

It's sad that Hot Chip gets full distribution, but Clor still can't get a U.S. deal with any label...(although maybe they've turned down offers from smaller U.S. labels as far as I know..)

Dom iNut (donut), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:26 (twenty years ago)

it's all about the DFA remix of "Just Like We (Breakdown)" which no doubt should get x-posted to that sad techno thread.

imbidimts, Tuesday, 17 January 2006 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Classic for getting the NME to embarrass themselves even more than usual by coining the term "slapcore."

"The Warning" has leaked </Orson>

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 05:30 (twenty years ago)

i was surprised at some of the hatred for this group, but i haven't heard any of the older material. i figured this would be something the ILMassive would love. "Just like We (Breakdown)" & "No Fit State" are really standing out so far.

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 05:32 (twenty years ago)

as i said before, "no fit state" is huge

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 05:58 (twenty years ago)

where did it leak to? it's not on oink
and i'm excited

nervous (cochere), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:01 (twenty years ago)

i figured cutty would like it.

is this gonna be on DFA?

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:03 (twenty years ago)

meaning, aren't there some people that work for DFA on this board. i'm guilty of stealing, but i'd rather not be guilty of spreading

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:04 (twenty years ago)

you can download the new album on slsk...been listening to it all day. i'm really digging Boy From School and Colours, though the whole album is pretty consistently good.

echodex (echodex), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:48 (twenty years ago)

i'm really surprised that the original of "Just like We (Breakdown)" is more interesting than the DFA remix. looses all the rhythmic complexity.

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:51 (twenty years ago)

The video for Over And Over makes me really not like them, though. the song definitely treads into the Beta Band/Ween territory. is this what all british people are like?

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 07:08 (twenty years ago)

Great new album. Miles above Coming on Strong and I liked that one.

wmlynch (wlynch), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 07:42 (twenty years ago)

the new remix 12 is brilliant, naum gabo and justus really doing great.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 23:52 (twenty years ago)

I like the video of 'Over And Over', and the song itself is much better than the whole career of the Junior Boys.

zeus (zeus), Monday, 6 March 2006 10:38 (twenty years ago)

... though the first Hot Chip album was more dud, than classic.

zeus (zeus), Monday, 6 March 2006 10:39 (twenty years ago)

tracklisting for 'the warning'? couldn't find the other thread searching on 'chip' and 'warning'

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

this is what i have:

Careful
Over & Over
Boy From School
Colours
Just Like We (Breakdown)
No Fit State
Tchaparian
Look After Me
The Warning
Arrest Yourself
So Glad to See You
Untitled

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:13 (twenty years ago)

saw em this weekend at a live instore. was really impressed. they had all indie-nerd steretypes covered. Terry from Just One of the Guys, Alan Cumming, Napoleon Dynamite (i couldn't see the two other guys).

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:17 (twenty years ago)

The guy on the right looks like Vinnie Jones!

T/S: Pinks/Oki Dog/Scoobys/Tail o' the Pup (Bent Over at the Arclight), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:30 (twenty years ago)

(of the stage; when they play live)

T/S: Pinks/Oki Dog/Scoobys/Tail o' the Pup (Bent Over at the Arclight), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:31 (twenty years ago)

jaxon referencing terry from just one of the guys just made my day.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm starting to think that the only Hot Chip tracks that really do it for me are No Fit State, The DFA's remix of Just Like We (Break Down), and Over and Over. It seems like the more I listen to other tracks from The Warning and Coming On Strong the less I like them. I really enjoyed those tracks live, but at home they put me to sleep more or less. So aside from the big 3 mentioned above, I'm apathetic...but maybe time will tell.

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:41 (twenty years ago)

it's a classic conundrum - great live band, dud on record.

hearts, Thursday, 9 March 2006 00:01 (twenty years ago)

chantilly, i know what you mean. while i was all gushing about their new 'un on the other thread, my enthusiasm for the record has steadily dwindled and now i often concede, letting my eager skip finger goes blang blauh several times.

its still way way fun and i can still feel it with my hands and my tongue but something seems a bit temporary about it all. (god, jaded about an album not even released for another 2 months - someone cut me up soon.)

four months pass...
free show at NYC's South St Seaport on Friday.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

mmm... anyone who hasn't seen them live or seen them earlier when they were a 3-piece, check that out...

they were fan-fuckingtastic at Sonar

I'm very puzzled by the "temporary" comments people seem to be making - of all the new artists 2000-onwards, these guys are one of the few that get constant replay - probably the album I've listened to most this year, never really outstays its welcome. if a better record comes out this year it'll be shock.

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

i really didnt like their first album, but this one basically roolz.

max (maxreax), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

I thought this was the thread where I was clowned for saying this sounded like dance music with an 'indie filter.' But its not. Nonetheless, "20-inch rims with the chrome now/ Blazin' out Yo La Tengo." http://www.smileyarena.com/emoticons/Invision/Blue_Fade/barf.gif

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

yeah definitely my favorite album of the year. i'm going to be at that seaport show too, duh, they rocked it when i saw them at cmj last year (before having heard any recorded output). plus since i'm reppin astralwerks for the summer its like a responsibility

i'll bump this thread on fri so kids can maybe pre/at-show meetup

nervous (cochere), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

This and Destroyer's Rubies are becoming my summer albums.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

deej, Hot Chip - The Warning

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

"over and over" has some good moments, like the synth freakout (freakout maybe too strong a word, but it's cool), but then not too long after it they start singing again and it's like, if you're talking about repetition and making me think about the wonderous qualities thereof, i think i'd rather put on a house/techno/whatever dj mix where the music won't get interrupted every 4 or 5 minutes. i guess that's why i don't appreciate indietronica or whatever it's called

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 02:39 (nineteen years ago)

"But Hot Chip's primary passion is contemporary rap and R&B."

What's up with all this stuff about American R&B/hip hop? I don't hear it in the music. Is it press sheet hype or what?

Gavin (Gavin), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

What's up with all this stuff about American R&B/hip hop? I don't hear it in the music. Is it press sheet hype or what?

The short answer is you're not listening to enough mainstream R&B radio.

The long answer is go pick up the current issue of (gags, puts iron to head) URB, where you can read about how Hot Chip attempt R&B but it 'all comes out wrong' (paraphrasing). You can interpret this in any number of ways, but you're a smart chap so I'll let you do the legwork.

Bottom line - they carry inflections from contemporary R&B/hip hop production, but when removed from their context said inflections often sound far afield. As they do with the Chipsters.

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

Bottom line - they carry inflections from contemporary R&B/hip hop production, but when removed from their context said inflections often sound far afield

I agree with this -- though I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "inflections", and I think it goes beyond the production. To me, Hot Chip sounds closer to contemporary R&B than it does to other forms of electronic dance music such as German micro-house. Like the Pet Shop Boys did in the '80s, they are working out of a popular R&B and dance idiom, but because of the singing voices and other influences, they end up sounding rather different.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

BUMP for tonight's Seaport show (hope the rainstorms are done)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

They were fun; I left before the encore, tho.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 5 August 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

encore was if i remember correctly 'down with prince' off the first record

nervous (cochere), Sunday, 6 August 2006 01:48 (nineteen years ago)

There's sod all US hip hop production on the new record anyway... more 2step garage ("The Warning", Hardcore ("Careful") soul("Look After Me"), dance rock (a la DFA- "Over and Over") maybe a hint of R'n'B... (Just Like we Breakdown") electro-funk... ("Arrest Yourself")....

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Sunday, 6 August 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

That Seaport show was a blast. They were much better live than I was expecting. I also left before the encore, but that's mainly because we were tired and hungry.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Hot Chip's new cover of Matthew Dear's Don & Cherri is so lovely.

Alba, Sunday, 16 September 2007 12:02 (eighteen years ago)

how do i eat hot chip

King Boy Pato, Sunday, 16 September 2007 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

Telephone thing, Sunday, 16 September 2007 13:01 (eighteen years ago)

kraftwerk remixes too?!

there's also a promo of a new single called 'shake a fist' going around.

haitch, Sunday, 16 September 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

the remix of 'La Forme' is aight

blueski, Sunday, 16 September 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

haha I actually wound up liking The Warning, though not enough to give the earlier stuff another try.

da croupier, Sunday, 16 September 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

"Shake a Fist" is totally awesome.

Ben Boyerrr, Sunday, 16 September 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

i'm surprised by how much ilm hated these guys back in the day!

^@^, Sunday, 16 September 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

thought the kraftwerk covers were meh

jaxon, Sunday, 16 September 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

"Ready For The Floor" is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy up there on the list of songs that need to hit the internet right this expletive-deleted second. V. excited about the Soulwax one, too (although I still think their much-derided bosh-bosh-bosh remixing strategy kicks much ass, so ymmv)!

jamescobo, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

"Shake A Fist". Whoa. brane. melted.

Roz, Friday, 28 September 2007 09:26 (eighteen years ago)

they've always been almost great to me, but this is something else.

Roz, Friday, 28 September 2007 09:27 (eighteen years ago)

they are boring drips. it's like indie record store nerds finally got into r'n'b and dance music because pitchfork told them that's ok now, then decided to make really boring "eclectic" music.

max r, Friday, 28 September 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

Please can you and every other dullard stop assuming that everyone's life and interests revolve around fucking Pitchfork? Or go and do it somewhere else?

DJ Mencap, Friday, 28 September 2007 12:56 (eighteen years ago)

not everyone, just goons like hot chip. c'mon, the singer sounds like neil from the young ones.

max r, Friday, 28 September 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

"please leave our over-hyped bands alone!"

max r, Friday, 28 September 2007 13:01 (eighteen years ago)

Mencap OTM. also, max, claiming that they are indie kids gone dance, probably says more about you than them. they gleefully sent up this attitude in "down with prince".

jed_, Friday, 28 September 2007 13:02 (eighteen years ago)

I don't have any particular feelings either way about this band FWIW

DJ Mencap, Friday, 28 September 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

i am a dance kid that now listens to a bit of everything. (like everybody these days, natch)

but not hot chip!

max r, Friday, 28 September 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

The 30 seconds after the studio dude comes in on 'Shake a fist' are probably my favourite musical moment of the year.

every remix, every dj set, practically every song (bar the erol rmx and over & over), every zany gig with them lined up in a self-conscious row by these guys is utter utter shit. the ultimate one-hit wonder who lucked into some bizarro world of cool by virtue of being on dfa

s.rose, Monday, 15 October 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...

I kinda wish they'd stick to the slow stuff - it suits them so much better than the clever-clogs dance shit. The title track of 'Made In The Dark' is stunning.

Kiff, Sunday, 13 January 2008 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

Out at the Pictures, song of the year, right?

Shin Oliva Suzuki, Sunday, 13 January 2008 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

they've always been almost great to me, but this is something else.

agreed! i picked up Made in the Dark yesterday (promo copy, full artwork etc.) and it's fantastic. i liked the previous two records in spots, and not so much in others. but this is their best work, by far. very very good.

stephen, Sunday, 20 January 2008 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

i havn't even heard it yet but this shit is going to be huge around here

gman, Sunday, 20 January 2008 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

made in the dark is a MASSIVE album. crikey.

CharlieNo4, Friday, 25 January 2008 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

fuck these guys

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Friday, 25 January 2008 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

Has this leaked?

Matt DC, Friday, 25 January 2008 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

Yep it's leaked, i agree about the slow stuff being better too. The background whistles in "We're Looking For A Lot of Love" are very nice

theslothproject, Friday, 25 January 2008 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

i listened to this once on the drive down during xmas. i thought it was terrible. the wife who's a huge fan.. thought it was terrible.

jaxon, Friday, 25 January 2008 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

i've only heard a couple tracks from this band ever, most of which i wasn't into, but that 'shake a fist' track is good.

Jordan, Friday, 25 January 2008 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

fuck these guys
http://z.about.com/d/politicalhumor/1/0/m/1/dean_finger.jpg

winston, Saturday, 26 January 2008 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

they certainly do inspire a great deal of ire, but it seems to be all based on their "impurity" and the fact that a lot of their fans seem to be obnoxious buttheads

winston, Saturday, 26 January 2008 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

I liked/like "Boy From School" quite a bit, for one, but the tracks that I've heard from the new record sound like inferior OMD songs.

dell, Saturday, 26 January 2008 04:04 (eighteen years ago)

They're actually pretty good, even if their new record suffers from some questionable sequencing. Their problem, listener-wise, is that they touch on a number of genres whose fans don't like each other very much.

Simon H., Saturday, 26 January 2008 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

blah-di-blah...
Anyway, I love most of the record and repeated listening pays off. I love how "Hold On" has got the feel & energy of Talking Heads ca. Stop Making Sense, including Byrne-guitar-chops - can't wait to see/hear that one performed live.

willem, Saturday, 26 January 2008 08:33 (eighteen years ago)

This sounded really good on the first listen. The 'getting everything wrong in a good way' moments outweigh the 'getting everything wrong full stop' moments this time. I like the stadium rock guitar at the beginning of One Pure Thought. Not sure about Bendable Poseable though.

Also, they're much better at beats this time.

Matt DC, Monday, 4 February 2008 09:40 (eighteen years ago)

i wonder what their ep on victory garden is now worth

wish i'd bought it

electricsound, Monday, 4 February 2008 09:43 (eighteen years ago)

Boring, and I liked the first two.

Raw Patrick, Monday, 4 February 2008 10:20 (eighteen years ago)

i don't like Ready For The Floor much - 'boring' and 'OMD' pretty much nail it!

jabba hands, Monday, 4 February 2008 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

Ready For The Floor certainly doesn't sound good in a club in the way that Over and Over did.

Raw Patrick, Monday, 4 February 2008 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

Not really feeling this so far - sounds to me like the syndrome of "they were great until they thought they could do it" once again.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 4 February 2008 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

no, it wouldn't sound good in a club. it's music for jogging.
xp

Cosmo Vitelli, Monday, 4 February 2008 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

Over and Over didn't sound particularly good in clubs either.

Matt DC, Monday, 4 February 2008 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

Actually I may be alone in thinking that Over & Over is kind of overrated.

Matt DC, Monday, 4 February 2008 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

It's nowhere near the best song on The Warning. (Look After Me is, btw)

nate woolls, Monday, 4 February 2008 11:33 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's a terrific record, though it seems like the two wings of their writing - Fisher-Price Danja Hands and Putney Delta blues ballads - are getting ever further apart... something the sequencing rather exacerbates. Good as it is, I'm not sure there's anything as good as 'Boy from school', which felt like a perfect midpoint between the two...

Stevie T, Monday, 4 February 2008 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

"Over & Over"'s a fine record but not really one for the clubs; the original mix is (for those purposes) awkwardly non-committal.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 4 February 2008 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

I danced to it a lot!

Raw Patrick, Monday, 4 February 2008 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, me too. and still prefer it to the remixes personally.

blueski, Monday, 4 February 2008 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

i probably wouldn't dance to it now tho thanks to culture show

blueski, Monday, 4 February 2008 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

I just realized my problem with Made in the Dark: it should end at "Wrestlers" (which sounds uncannily like Hot Shots II-era Beta Band) and be a flawless 44-minute record, but instead it's a lopsided 55-minute one.

Still one of the better recs so far this year.

Simon H., Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

also "Out at the Pictures" should go on longer, it's amazing.

Simon H., Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

is that the first song? i like that.

i hate hate hate the spoken interlude in shake a fist.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

same. it reminds me of something off ninja tunes

t_g, Thursday, 7 February 2008 08:59 (eighteen years ago)

It's Todd Rundgren! I love that part.

Savannah Smiles, Thursday, 7 February 2008 09:23 (eighteen years ago)

You'd be much better off buying Something/Anything? and have done with it.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 7 February 2008 09:26 (eighteen years ago)

i realise it's todd rundgren! it's just that whole let's interrupt the song + have someone speaking like 'this is an audio test, now let's try the right channel' etc etc thing that bugs me (and reminds me of ninja tune)

t_g, Thursday, 7 February 2008 09:30 (eighteen years ago)

Really I'm just getting tired of record collection pop.

Admittedly Todd pretty much fired the starting pistol for record collection pop but he used his sources as inspiration rather than crutches.

This is my sticking point with the whole critical thing about oh isn't it so much better these days, all music ever made is freely available on t'internet and kids can pick n' mix and come up with all sorts of Heston Blumenthal-esque wacky fusions it's never been healthier.

But where's the backstory, the emotion, the purpose? Since the likes of Hot Chip are not Bill Burroughs they can't rely on the accidental effects of cut and paste in themselves (and in any case Burroughs never tried to pluck anything from thin air). All right, they've bought or downloaded some old Todd records. So have I. So what?

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 7 February 2008 09:44 (eighteen years ago)

Have you written a song as catchy as "Shake a Fist"?

Savannah Smiles, Thursday, 7 February 2008 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

(Admittedly, that's a pretty strawman response to your post, but seriously - reducing their act to "they've bought or downloaded some old Todd records" is pretty ridiculous. I hear plenty of emotion and purpose. I mean, all you've really got here is "I don't care for their music," right?)

Savannah Smiles, Thursday, 7 February 2008 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

The last one was patchy but very good in places, SS. As was their first album.

But I don't see any aesthetic or emotional purpose in interrupting one of the better songs on this record to indulge their Vinyl Vultures fantasy and since it has zero relevance to the rest of the song and is not sufficiently amusing or startling for that not to matter then I question its inclusion.

Recommended listening: the "Titanic" middle part of "Oops...I Did It Again" and the Shortwave Set album.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 7 February 2008 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

i had no idea that was todd rundgren!

s1ocki, Thursday, 7 February 2008 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

I like it better than the previous ones. Still feels it's too sophisticated and too clever, and perhaps next time they will strike the right balance. In that case they will deliver a classic.

zeus, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

The worst thing about the Rundgren bit is that they're jacking someone else's joke! Why didn't they just record they're own bit like that?

Crap Kraft Dinner remains their best song.

Hmm, have gone back to Boy from School tonight for some reason, and now I can't stop listening to it. The programming is pretty brilliant on that track.

Also, I heard them when they were guest dj-ing on some BBC radio thing, and they played some pretty amazing stuff. I wish I had even the slightest clue as to what any of it was. I could sure use me some sweet sweet techno sounds tonight, though...

dell, Monday, 26 May 2008 00:52 (eighteen years ago)

"boy from school" is their best song tho

"the warning" (the song) is one of their best songs too

strøm thurmond (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 2 April 2009 08:57 (seventeen years ago)

Neither are exactly perfect all the way through - The Warning is patchy in the first half and really picks up in the second half and its more delicate moments are gorgeous. Made In The Dark begins awesomely and then they start fannying around with stupid comedy nonsense like The Wrestlers and it falls apart.

first album is smug duff crud. plus it hung out in my girlfriends cd changer for about 2 years ruining every long car journey in this period. I liked the warning as it seemed theyd risen above the too smart to dance fanboy toss of the first and made a decent sounding album. boy from school had some good remixes. the last one is rubbish though, i also saw them in germany last summer and they were behaving like a bunch of bloody primadonnas because the fat one who hardly sings mic wasnt working

I'd like this band a whole lot more if it weren't for the singer's voice. Like, when I was describing King Creosote one time I said something along the lines of how he sings in a way that if it were anyone else it would come off extremely wanky and insincere, but somehow he manages not to, whereas Hot Chip guy really really does.

Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Friday, 9 September 2011 10:38 (fourteen years ago)

What's that track that sounds like La Isla Bonita? I love that.

Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Friday, 9 September 2011 10:39 (fourteen years ago)

Really? I think Hot Chip dude sounds almost painfully sincere a lot of the time.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 September 2011 10:40 (fourteen years ago)

painful, i'll give you that. i can imagine it being a bit of a marmite thing. like, technically he's a very good singer, but something about the way he sings gets my back up. can't pinpoint why.

Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Friday, 9 September 2011 10:48 (fourteen years ago)

"over-earnest" is a better word than insincere.

Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Friday, 9 September 2011 10:48 (fourteen years ago)

Is he over-earnest or insincere? Make your mind up.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 September 2011 10:53 (fourteen years ago)

their music makes me think of really bland formulaic graphic design

someone played me a joe goddard album along with something called sbtrkt to demonstrate the kind of sounds she wanted to get. all i remember was that it had a little bit of everything current and fashionable in it. bit of dancehall, bit of pitched down vocals, bit of a disco stomp (the beats were wank). competent, but BORING.

nothing sounded particularly vital or exciting, the dancehall bits in particular bought the lolz, so weak and weedy

i'm sure there'll be a good remix or two tho

Crackle Box, Friday, 9 September 2011 10:56 (fourteen years ago)

i dont think hot chip dude is a technically a good singer? i've heard little but he kind of speak sings mumbles in a fairly limited range

if you play this and then, say, chelonis r jones i think the sincerity thing is really obvious

hot chip is like "this is what we want to do, listen to our attempt at doing it"

chelonis is like "this is what i do, deal with it"

Crackle Box, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:02 (fourteen years ago)

Crackle Box, "Gabriel" is in a different league from his album. one of my favourite tracks for a long time.

jed_, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:04 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, the album was not good. It was 90% instrumentals iirc? The vocal really makes Gabriel.

Number None, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:07 (fourteen years ago)

like, technically he's a very good singer

no he's not, lol

also...over-earnest and insincere mean opposite things, right?

i didn't take any notice of "gabriel" at first because it was a hot chip side project (and i don't even mind them) - v thankful their own vox are nowhere near it

i asked for "HALF" a glass of wine, because i am TEMPERENT (lex pretend), Friday, 9 September 2011 11:09 (fourteen years ago)

xxposts Rather, his earnestness tips him into insincerity. I like one or two of their songs, but I agree with Crackle Box. His voice, and their overall sound, hint at what they're trying to do but fall short all too often. The emotions and attempts at zeitgeist-capturing pop have always sounded like they were knocked up in a brainstorming session called 'Things That Are Cool', ("Shutter shades", I like it, maybe a bit dated but we'll stick it up anyway. Okay, what else?)...

Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Friday, 9 September 2011 11:10 (fourteen years ago)

I was just mildly trolling because 'over-earnest' and 'insincere' are kind of the opposite of one another.

I think Alexis (or is it Joe?) has a reasonable falsetto (it sounds great on songs like Boy From School). He can certainly sing in tune, but his voice is kind of weedy and I can totally understand why that would be offputting. I'm put off by it sometimes as well.

I don't really see the point in comparing them to Chelonis at all, I don't think they're even aiming for the same thing.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:10 (fourteen years ago)

Argh xpost.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

i can see how over-earnest and insincere could produce a similar effect in a vocal even though they are different.

jed_, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:15 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think they're going for "Things That Are Cool" generally. I just think they're music geeks who try to stuff as many of the different sounds they like into their music as they can. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Goddard is a big UK Funky fan i believe, which you can hear in "Gabriel"

Number None, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:15 (fourteen years ago)

Boys From School is good - and yeah it's an example of his voice working well with the track.

Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Friday, 9 September 2011 11:18 (fourteen years ago)

Something I don't really understand: About Group. What I've heard is nowhere near as interesting as it was made out to be in the interview I read.

Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Friday, 9 September 2011 11:19 (fourteen years ago)

no they're not aiming for the same thing, that wasn't the point, it's just an attitude thing, i'm not really into that dilettante approach to stuff

and yeh, i just listened to gabriel and yeah it's really good, that "girl you've gone to far" bit is stuck in my head already. hope he gets a hit out of it. i didn't want to like it, but it's all that vocalist rlly. again, look forward to the remixes

Crackle Box, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:26 (fourteen years ago)

I can see why the dilettante thing would be offputting as well - at the same time I get the feeling that being in Hot Chip is probably more fun than being in most bands.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:29 (fourteen years ago)

I like the way that any given time there can be four or five "Hot Chip DJ Sets" happening simultaneously around the world. A couple of the lesser members have DJ'd more than once in my home town, which no one of note ever comes to. Gotta get that paper

Number None, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:35 (fourteen years ago)

maybe only three or four simultaneously, I think some of them only DJ with another one. Joe also DJs with both 2 Bears and Greco-Roman Soundsystem tho

About Group is literally just some jams to tape, easy to not find that interesting. I got the first band-name-less album, s'alright but they're no Necks

Alexis has the falsetto, Joe has a much deeper voice, which I really love when they use it as a counterpoint to Alexis (whether in normal register or fluting and cracking), but they seem to feature him less and less as the band goes on

heard them (one of them) dj once and they did that HORRIBLE franchise club dj thing of playing a million intros to tracks and never getting through a song before thinking of some other 'amazing' track to mix it with. Gave me a fucking headache. Not to say the selection of songs were bad but jesus it made me weary.

ILM's most hate to love/love to hate group will have a new album in 2012

http://pitchfork.com/news/45596-hot-chip-get-in-our-heads-on-new-album/
Hot Chip are back with a new album, new tour, and a new label. On June 12 in the U.S. and June 11 in the UK, they'll release In Our Heads on Domino, a departure from longtime home DFA/Astralwerks. The follow-up to 2010's One Life Stand was produced by Hot Chip themselves with producer/engineer Mark Ralph.

The band will hit the road this summer, including a stop at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago.

In Our Heads:

01 Motion Sickness
02 How Do You Do
03 Don't Deny Your Heart
04 Look at Where We Are
05 These Chains
06 Night and Day
07 Flutes
08 Now There Is Nothing
09 Ends of the Earth
10 Let Me Be Him
11 Always Been Your Love

ILM's most hate to love/love to hate group

Really? Always thought they were largely controversial and mildly to well liked here.

My reaction to the new track is basically the same as all the others - great song, shame about the voice. But I usually get used to the voice after a while and find myself wondering why it bothered me.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 16 March 2012 11:15 (fourteen years ago)

i'm sure his voice didn't always use to be this bad - it was never great but for the past few years it's been unlistenable

lex pretend, Friday, 16 March 2012 11:26 (fourteen years ago)

It's weird, it's sort of quavery but he's never actually out of tune, so after a while I get used to it. There are two vocalists and I think the quavery one has been doing more of late. Wish he'd sing in the lower register more though, but this goes for basically all male singers ever with me, especially indie dudes.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 16 March 2012 11:40 (fourteen years ago)

It's definitely worse. I haven't been able to listen to anything since the first two albums because of that voice.

nate woolls, Friday, 16 March 2012 11:40 (fourteen years ago)

Huh. I find the singing in Hot Chip possibly its greatest attribute. No joke. Reminds me of ... Squeeze? I don't know, but I love how approachable they are.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 16 March 2012 11:51 (fourteen years ago)

I hated the vocals on One Life Stand at first and then grew to love pretty much the whole album, but when Gabriel came out last year it reminded me of how amazing Hot Chip could have been had they gone down the Basement Jaxx route and roped in a rotating cast of singers.

Every time there's a new Hot Chip single and I hear praise on it I get a bit excited and hopeful, then I listen to it and feel frustrated by the horrible vocals. This is no different.

boxedjoy, Friday, 20 April 2012 08:06 (fourteen years ago)

Like I know I shouldn't ever expect the vocals to not be insufferably twee by this point but there's so much muscle in this new effort, it all seems so mismatched with a frustrating amount of potential.

boxedjoy, Friday, 20 April 2012 08:08 (fourteen years ago)

I love this, especially the deadpan DJ bit. "I like Zapp not Zappa/So Stop your jibber-jabber." I don't mind Alexis's vocals as long as he's not doing ballads.

I keep warming to them a little more with each passing year. From a starting position of "Who are these jokers?" I am now at "I think Hot Chip are probably the best modern British band." Which is not something I expected to believe.

Manfred Mann meets Man Parrish (ithappens), Sunday, 20 May 2012 20:09 (fourteen years ago)

funny, i've gone the other way - i found them to be overall a Good Thing earlier in their career, maybe not a band i'd be obsessed about but reliable for the occasional great jam, enjoyable live show that no one in any group would object to, fun DJ sets, good fodder for remixers. but ennui has definitely set in over the years as it becomes more and more clear that they're just the kind of journeymen whose output is permanently stuck at three-star quality. i listened to the new one out of a sense of duty and was relieved when it finished..

― Manfred Mann meets Man Parrish (ithappens)

I kind of agree with this. Really hated them when I first heard them, did not get the fuss about Over & Over at all but now they might just be my favourite British band around. Night & Day is the weakest of the new tracks I've heard but that one I just posted is one of the best things they've done. There's like 3 great choruses in that song. As for his vocals I've no problem with them at all, he always sounds really vulnerable which kind of works with how warm the music is.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 21 May 2012 13:48 (fourteen years ago)

I like a couple of songs off each album. I don't think they've ever managed to be inspired enough, often enough. I like the idea of them.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 21 May 2012 13:49 (fourteen years ago)

I think their last two albums are head and shoulders above the first three. It's like they've always loved dance music but for ages they felt obliged to put air quotes around it. The new album makes me think of New Order's Technique.

xpost i definitely am skeptical about them -- i thought the warning and made in the dark were solid but i never really gelled with them beyond the big singles. and i thought one life stand was a pretty weak record. but i love this one back to front.

caulk the wagon and float it, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:17 (fourteen years ago)

The dinkiness has always bothered me but it sounds – on first listen – like they've developed their grooves.

go down on you in a thyatrr (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:23 (fourteen years ago)

Huh. I think "One Life Stand" is their best one, and the first one that sounded fully groove-developed to me. I love the wistfulness to much of their stuff - the Wyatt collab was a tip-off - and the fact that they are kind of a band that makes you dance rather than a dance band, which puts them in the same hybrid box as New Order and LCD Soundsystem. But really more idiosyncratic than both of those acts.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:30 (fourteen years ago)

I disagree re New Order.

I do love "One Life Stand" the single.

go down on you in a thyatrr (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:31 (fourteen years ago)

You mean that you think New Order is idiosyncratic? I used to think so, when the band was still finding its way, but as much as I love New Order I find the group pretty conservative, actually. Stuff I once saw as adventurous I now see as either lazy or half thought out. The miracle of New Order is that that usually still worked!

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:37 (fourteen years ago)

Not going to take sides but this album really reminds me of Technique in its balance of introvert and extrovert.

Get wolves (DL), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:40 (fourteen years ago)

I do love how Hot Chip, unlike LCD Soundsystem, can get away with recalling New Order without sounding like New Order. I think that keys in on one of its gifts.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:45 (fourteen years ago)

i think maybe i just never found my way inside of those idiosyncrasies, never found the proper angle from which to listen to the unique things they were doing, so to speak. which is why Boy From School, Ready for the Floor -- where idiosyncrasies are balanced with easy universality -- appealed to me the most. One Life Stand being the "most Hot Chip" and therefore probably most idiosyncratic of their albums, i "got it" the least. but i've taken to the new one so instantly that i think it may be my key for going back and understanding their other music.

caulk the wagon and float it, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:46 (fourteen years ago)

exactly. I understand their goofiness attracts people; to me it sounds arch.

go down on you in a thyatrr (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:48 (fourteen years ago)

Again, I think the group live is key. You think you only like the singles until you see the band pull off two-hours of all killer stuff. Though I admit I can imagine it coming off arch, if anything I also get a sense of over-earnestness. Hence the Duality of the Hot Chip Thing.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:50 (fourteen years ago)

word. plus Alexis Taylor has a very, very odd voice that doesn't necessarily seem so at first blush. to me that makes them somewhat inscrutable vis a vis arch vs. earnest

caulk the wagon and float it, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:54 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, they're basically their own "remixers" live. Everything is amped up more than on record. I've seen them three or four times and it's always great.

Number None, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

You think One Life Stand is the MOST idiosyncratic, caulk? Sounds to me like by far their most warm, sincere and straightforward up to that point.

Get wolves (DL), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

I think "Made in the Dark" is the weird, hard to get into one.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

omigod the one that goes MEVSYOUVSMEVSYOUVSMEVSYOU is exactly what I mean about their cuteness

go down on you in a thyatrr (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

my statement might be based on my original perception of the band: as a DFA-esque dance group rather than a smoove pop group. Made in the Dark is pretty weird, but it fit my preconception of them better. One Life Stand had less of that, and that's probably why i was turned off by it

caulk the wagon and float it, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not really feeling Don't Deny Your Love - there's a hell of a lot going on in that song and I'm not sure it really hangs together very well, especially in the first minute or so.

The rest of it is great. Especially enjoying Motion Sickness, Flutes and Now There Is Nothing at the moment. Obviously Flutes is about 80% Sky Was Pink DNA but it's lovely nonetheless. Now There Is Nothing is intriguing, like you could imagine Hot Chip taking late 60s psych-pop as a starting point and running somewhere much more interesting with it than most indie bands are able to manage.

Matt DC, Friday, 8 June 2012 11:38 (thirteen years ago)

Apart from Now There Is Nothing and How Do You Do, which are fine but not great, I unambiguously love this record. I've played it more than anything else this year. They were terrific headlining Lovebox too.

Get wolves (DL), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 16:10 (thirteen years ago)

I'm starting to think this might be their best record. Everything has just fallen into place and I just can't find any weak tracks. Night & Day might be my least favourite song on there but it's still stuck in my head a lot of the time. Don't Deny Your Heart, Let Me Be Him, Motion Sickness and Flutes are all so amazing and really up there with their best songs.

Seeing them live next month for the first time, so excited.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

Let Me Be Him is so great!! i had it on repeat for about two and a half hours last night while doing work in my apartment. such a sad refrain but sung with so much resolve-- the "ooooo oooo ooo oh oh oh haay oh" parts remind me of something too, like phil collins or peter gabriel?

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 04:17 (thirteen years ago)

I think it might be their best, honestly. Maybe doesn't have the peaks of The Warning, but it's a really strong album from start to finish. Definitely better than the last two.

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 05:11 (thirteen years ago)

I listened to The Warning the other day and it's really all over the place and kind of shonky - the first track is a mess, it's all a bit primary school instrumentation in places, the highs are fantastic but its way inconsistent. Probably unique in Hot Chip albums in actually getting stronger towards the end though.

I think the new one is probably their most consistently good, not sure the peaks are quite as high but at least it doesn't slip to the most half-arsed lows of Made In The Dark.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 09:33 (thirteen years ago)

Let Me Be Him is so killer. Everyone I know who's heard this album thinks that's the one. Like gr8080 I can't quite place the origin of those chants but the effect is so familiar. I'm also obsessed with the vocal loop on Flutes - apparently based on an old record of chanting monks.

The chants in "Let Him Be Me" are a little bit Howard Jones, a little bit "Self-Control."

This song is a perfect example of how often people forget there are two singers in this band, and they each bring their own sensibility to their respective tracks.

I get a hint of a, uh, sincere take on "Tarzan Boy".

etc, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 13:23 (thirteen years ago)

It's not the same sample but it reminded me a bit of Enfants (Chants) by Villalobos. Over The Sky Was Pink obviously.

can't find a direct quote but

Hot Chip's Joe Goddard tells Pitchfork that "Flutes" was one of the first songs that he and bandmate Alexis Taylor wrote for the new album. Its origin came from a sample of a two-note flute melody, its main inspiration from James Holden's remix of Nathan Fake's "The Sky Was Pink". The band chose the song as In Our Head's first song to be made public as a left turn for listeners: "I like it when bands come back with something that's fresh and unusual, you know?," Goddard said. "It's a more ambitious song than other things we've done in the past. I worked on it a lot to make sure it's constantly developing in an unusual way. I'm pleased with how it turned out."

Number None, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 23:44 (thirteen years ago)

re: Let Me Be Him/gr8080 - the "ooooo oooo ooo oh oh oh haay oh" parts remind me of something too, like phil collins or peter gabriel?

Feel like it may be something more recent like one of the songs on the Holy Ghost! album?

willem, Thursday, 21 June 2012 08:09 (thirteen years ago)

I thought of Phil Collins or Gabriel as well but tbh every second pop song that comes out these days seems to have an "ooooo oooo ooo oh oh oh haay oh" type chorus so it could be anything.

Matt DC, Thursday, 21 June 2012 09:43 (thirteen years ago)

It's a bit like a Coldplay chant if we're being brutally honest, and nothing wrong with that.

Get wolves (DL), Thursday, 21 June 2012 10:06 (thirteen years ago)

In a post Arcade Fire world, every song has a wordless "ooooooh" or two on it.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 21 June 2012 13:57 (thirteen years ago)

Hacky Red One-type pop producers aiming for a stadium anthem with terrace chant crossover on every single record probably has a hand in that too.

Matt DC, Thursday, 21 June 2012 14:08 (thirteen years ago)

And yet despite that Hot Chip's sounds entirely fresh and endearing and thrilling to me.

Get wolves (DL), Thursday, 21 June 2012 15:32 (thirteen years ago)

No doubt because the occasion wordless "ooooh" is hardly the only hook each respective song has to offer.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 21 June 2012 15:34 (thirteen years ago)

The synthy bits in "Flutes" initially reminded me of Booka Shade, but yeah, I can definitely see "The Sky Was Pink" as an overall inspiration.

do the rest of them do anything much?

The rest of the band? Everyone swaps instruments a lot. One guy used to do double duty in LCD Soundsystem. There are some songs (live) where pretty much everyone is playing a guitar or something, and other songs where everyone is playing synths.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 22 June 2012 02:23 (thirteen years ago)

There are loads of nice touches throughout this - I'm all about the guitar solo and the disembodied girl's voice over the final track at the moment.

Also is the "I don't play no gabba" dude during Night And Day supposed to sound like Tricky?

Matt DC, Friday, 22 June 2012 09:00 (thirteen years ago)

amazed that this is gaining such traction - the production is improved in places but they're still as awful at ballads as ever and his voice is WORSE than ever. found it a real chore to listen to.

Matt DC, Friday, 22 June 2012 09:46 (thirteen years ago)

This is what he does. I was reading an old Robyn thread the other day and every other post was him telling everyone how much he can't stand her. This was going back to 2005 and five years later he's posting the same old shit, I can't believe he doesn't get bored of it.

Finally got to see them in Minnesota last week. They were great but the set seemed so short. Looking at the other recent setlists it seems they had to cut Hand Me Down Your Love and Let Me Be Him. Pretty gutted they didn't do Motion Sickness either as that has become my favourite on the new album.

Just saw the other day Look at Where we are is the next single. It's a great song but surely Don't Deny Your Heart is the obvious hit on the album?

J0rdan S., Saturday, 21 July 2012 04:35 (thirteen years ago)

SO AMAZING. Chromatics were way better live than on record (and I love them already), and Hot Chip deserved everything I've heard about their live show. They did a Fleetwood Mac cover, they dropped Prince's "If I Was Your Girlfriend" into "Look At Where We Are," and made some tweaks to "Night and Day" that I really wish had made it onto the album- generally streamlining it, also adding this kind of...rattling/scratching sound (like Dennis Bovell's matchbox on "Newtown") and an ooo-weeee-ooooooo theremin-sounding synth line on the chorus.

It's excellent, but in typical Hot Chip style, the running order could do with some attention. 'Separate' could easily be a highlight of the album, instead they bury it on a bonus EP, for example.

matt h, Friday, 29 May 2015 09:25 (eleven years ago)

I listened to it once and haven't had the urge to go back.

Matt DC, Friday, 29 May 2015 11:23 (eleven years ago)

Likewise. In fact, mid-listen I forgot that "In Our Heads" existed and went back to that album instead. "One Life Stand" is still my go-to, but neither the new one nor the last one are bad at all, so I'll be sure to give them more rotation. I did notice that Hot Chip doesn't seem to be touring as much, at least not outside the US festival circuit. Maybe if I'd seen them live more recently I'd be more in love with the newer stuff.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 May 2015 12:06 (eleven years ago)

Massively underwhelmed on first listen but it gets a lot better, though still not great. I was really getting into it until I played In Our Heads again and realised what a step down it was.

Definitely a step down from the last two albums but still really enjoyable. I like every song on their but it could do with a few more big moments like Let Be He Him or Flutes. I think the Pitchfork review was about right when they said it's the fourth best Hot Chip album.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 29 May 2015 13:52 (eleven years ago)

Huarache Lights, Started Right and the title track are the keepers for me. KP OTM about the lack of big moments though. It's all happening within a narrow bandwidth. And much though I love the band I've never quite come around to Alexis's voice but I love Joe's. In Our Heads had the perfect Alexis:Joe balance. This one doesn't.

Continue your brooding monologue (Re-Make/Re-Model), Friday, 29 May 2015 13:54 (eleven years ago)

Just read the Pitchfork review. Nails it.

Continue your brooding monologue (Re-Make/Re-Model), Friday, 29 May 2015 13:56 (eleven years ago)

It also moves towards a slightly sparser sound than the last record and that really doesn't do Alexis any favours.

Coming On Strong and The Warning are fine, they have a good ~brand identity~ that fits the band's semi-tentative sound at the time. The no-copy-the-same-colour gag on the last one was fun, or would have been in record shops (the bonus EP only came if you bought direct from EMI in Australia). The new one is atrocious.

I need to spend more time with the new one. It feels like they peaked with One Life Stand and In Our Heads, but those last two albums were really good. They're still yet to put out a bad album.

I played the new album Feaksout/Release over the weekend and it was decent. Not really a fan of the lead single but liked the album. First time have checked out something new by them and will revisit at some point this year.
