HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to see them tonight!

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

17th for me

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I was planning on showing up just to see AMT. IS Subarachnoid Space worth showing up early for?

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

btw, Psychic Paramount is pretty good - very much in the AMT vein

dleone (dleone), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm going tomorrow night!! i heard subarachnoid space was really good.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

subarachnoid space are kind of dull. I missed the SF shows!

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I don't think I want more drone than AMT. I want to see the Mae Shi but they're going on first, sadly.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Show in Chicago with Wolf Eyes was MAGNIFICENT!
I'm not a SubArachnoic Space fan, I missed their opening set.
Rest of the show was badass. Pony-tailed hippies were non-plussed by Wolf Eyes, most walked to the back of the club in laughter. Their set sounded great, but they aren't always the most visually stimulating group. I'd rather be on the floor with them, two feet in front of the PA speakers, rather than watch them on a stage in a crowd.
Acid Mothers provieded inifinite riffs of righteousness, absolutely glorious.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Vahid, look for me at tomorrow night's show! I'll be there with Elvis Telecom and mutual friend Matt.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

AMT in SF on Saturday blew my mind, again. They never cease to amaze me, and I stand by my assertion that they are thee best band in the universe.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Canada gets screwed, as usual ...

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken, how long was their set?

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

there are pony-tailed hippies who can handle AMT but not wolf eyes? that seems weird and/or lame.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

just got my ticket for their new orleans show

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

yea, uh should i get my ticket in advance

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not expecting anyone to even be at tonight's show. LA BLOWZ. I'd figure that last night Spaceland show was also heavily underattended thanks to the Lakers game (if you can call it that) and the Kerry benefit, also, hipsters = sux0rs.

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken, how long was their set?

'bout 1.5 hours with encore

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, pretty much Jon. OR even worse, "I dress like a hipster and am in a band, but I have never heard of any bands ever! I don't even listen to music!"

Ken, thanks. I'll hope that my feet can maintain their arches.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Same case in Chicago, about 90 minute set. Light on drone, heavy on riffs.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

remember the thread where I posted 19289821 pictures of LA kids at "club 82"?????

Quaff or queef?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

BOTH.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Caught Acid Mothers in Detroit about a week and a half ago. GO SEE THEM! I wasn't overly familiar with them (knew the legend more than the music) and it was well worth it. Their obligatory "pop song" (what the vocalist called it) sounded like the Ruins! Wolf Eyes were good, too, and I thought Subarachnoid Space were decent.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Monday, 7 June 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Do they still have dancing, chain smoking and drinking keyboarding girl?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Cotton Casino has left the band, but I think she's still going to appear at a few of the dates.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and HE IS OBSESSED with his hair (obv.)

my day has been made!

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

So, the show was good. AMT was much more enjoyable that I had expected them to be. They focused mainly on the more melodic, loop based stuff and didn't do a lot of drone, which I appreciated. Somehow they made two hours seem like one hour and fifty minutes.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a strange compliment.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

good god! two hours??? i wonder if i am going to make it to the end :-(

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Fear not, good Mr. Vahid. We'll be your moral support.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(Now that I think about it, how much is the show anyway?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm going to bring a folding beach chair.

the show is $10-, $14- if you buy will call tickets at ticketmaster. you may want to do that ... there's a pretty big stoner rock contingent in san diego, and the hometown heroes (earthless, not subarachnoid space) are opening, so a lot of people will show up at the door early.

i got my tickets will call.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

$15.75 through will call at this point, which I went ahead and did to be safe as per yer suggestion. Will see you tonight!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a strange compliment.

It was a joke, mostly about how long there set was. We showed up at 10 and they were already playing and went steadily until exactly 12. Then, the few people there started to leave and a guy got on the PA and said that since the A/C was broken, the bar was serving $1 Rolling Rocks and that everyone should stay and see AMT play some more. But, I couldn't hack it, so I left. AMT was at the merch booth and there was a surprisingly huge crowd trying to buy CDRs so I knew it would be awhile. The thought that such a long show was good is definitely evidence of how well they played and how nicely paced everything was. But this is also the opinion of someone seeing AMT live for the first time, so ...

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It'll be my second time so I sorta half know what to expect, but without Cotton Casino it'll be interesting. There's one specific tour only CD I'm looking for, the rest I can scrounge as I choose to via Eclipse -- hell, I already picked up Kawabata's 8 CDR Private Tapes releases, the rest is gravy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

hey ned, please give the mothers my best salutations - and try ask hiroshi about grappa!

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Why aren't there any good outdoor venues for non stadium drawing bands? I would love to see AMT in a park or something

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

the 15th in Atlanta. Be there or be square.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

hey ned, please give the mothers my best salutations - and try ask hiroshi about grappa!

Ha, that's right! If I get a chance to talk to one of them, I'll mention it!

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

San Diego were grand. I highly understate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned does indeed understate.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Well when I posted that I had just gotten home at 3 am and was not coherent much. I should note that I am not much improved at this point.

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWK

Highlight for me -- the Neu!/motorik tribute break in that one monster song they always do. It lasted for 10 minutes and reduced any other band's attempt to do same in recent years, from Stereolab to Sonic Youth to whoever, to rubble.

Subarachnoid weren't bad (seen them better, though), Earthless were a revelation and definitely deserve to be seen live.

Marco, I did indeed pass on your best, they were happily appreciative, and Hiroshi thought very highly of grappa.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha! glad to know they are great as usual - the concert they played in padova a couple of years ago was a total highlight for me.
hiroshi and i had a couple of long chats in which, i must admit, grappa played a key role...

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The tour-only CD this time around, Hypnotic Liquid Machine from the Golden Utopia, is a freakin' monster so far -- to the point where, for the first time in eighteen months, my neighbor one cubicle over came over to ask what in the world I was listening to. "It sounds like static!" (Note: it does not in fact sound like static -- it sounds like AMT.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The big monster song they always play is "Pink Lady Lemonade," 'less I'm mistaken.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, yeah -- I know the song, forgot the name.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the motorik rave up Ned's referring to is "In E," def a personal favorite.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I was there too. Favorite band were Earthless, actually. Why haven't I heard of them before? Now I can say "my city's noise band kicks your city's noise band's ass." Kinda like Wolf Eyes meets Oneida at Built to Spill's house? (sorry...) I bought the CD and will check it out when/if my ears ever stop ringing.

Subarachnoid Space were boring as fuck. Must have been great for bar sales. It didn't help that the bass player wore a Grateful Dead T - unironically!

AMT were great of course, but by the end I couldn't take any more. Did they do an encore?

chëshy f cät, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the motorik rave up Ned's referring to is "In E," def a personal favorite.

Probably -- I have that around somewhere, must dig it out again.

I was there too.

It was a night for ILX! Not only myself and Elvis T. and Matt Maxwell and you, but Vahid and then famous athlete, who came up to me and asked "Are you Ned Raggett from I Love Music?" I was completely flustered! And I was talking to Mario from Earthless at the time and he probably wondered what the fuck was going on!

Favorite band were Earthless, actually. Why haven't I heard of them before?

Hell, I've been on the Rocket list forever (in that Mario from Earthless is the same Mario in Rocket and formerly with Clikitat Ikatowi) and I only just heard of them the other day -- now I have a fave new band! Emusic.com has the show from last night available -- they have some sorta Clear Channel deal with the Casbah -- while the CDR the band were selling is from a show there earlier in the year, I'm listening to it now. Three tracks, the first is a touch slower than what they played yesterday but still great -- however, they are DEFINITELY a live band, they've got that sheer room-filling explosive feeling down.

Subarachnoid miss Mason Jones a bit, I think. No encore as such from AMT -- just two goddamn hours of noise and wackiness.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for the info, Ned. Do you by any chance have a link to last night's Earthless set on emusic? I just did an artist search over there and couldn't find it.

chëshy f cät, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe it takes time to upload? There were quite literally copies there thirty minutes after the show was over, ready for sale.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, try a venue search maybe, for the Casbah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, wait, the CDR has this URL listed too:

Earthless
Earth

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

(but my U + K question.. was the woman in AMT backhumping her synth Herrema-style?)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah no, Cotton is either out of the band permanently (as it seems) or on hiatus. When not playing guitar, Higashi was attacking the synth this time out, and not in Cotton's, ah, unique fashion. Four person lineup -- Kawabata, Higashi, Tsuyama on bass, Koizumi on drums

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE BROOKLYN SHOW.

I AM GETTING ILX CREW HIGH BEFORE THEY PLAY, GUARANTEED.

The Atlanta show was total myndfuckness. Superb. Among the best shows I've ever seen. There.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw about half-an-hour of their set last night (I was splitting my time between AMT and, ahem, a different show elsewhere which was nowhere near as good even though there were like a billion kids there) and it fucking KICKED my ASS - their time-signature changes are so fluid & gorgeous

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 17 June 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

did they use a lot of percussion for this stuff or not

amt in baltimore ruled. does anybody know anything about the song that tsuyama (bassist) introduced as "a new song"? it had yodeling and was UNBELIEVABLE.

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 18 June 2004 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

god they played that in nc too!
Khoomei!

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Friday, 18 June 2004 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

p.s. the decemberists < amt

oh I know! the people I was hangin' out with wanted to see the decemberists, and we left after two songs. (the long winters were really good though. just not as completely insanely mindblowing as AMT, who had one song that started in 4/4, shifted into 5/4 very subtly, then to 6/4, then back into 5/4...it made me woozy and punchy and delighted)

OH FUCKING LORD - RE: THAT VIDEO

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Friday, 18 June 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

drummer totally old-school, holds his sticks palms-up & is awesome

He was switching grips in the show in Denton, but yeah, he seemed really old school. There's something awesome about a stone-faced drummer with a crew cut playing with AMT.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah looked completely at ease about being around those crazyasses.
i wish he would have bowed the cymbal with that strange bow that kawabata makoto was using on his guitar.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Have I told you guys the story about one of the guys, a drummer, who came along on tour with Mong Hang last summer? We got him really drunk & stoned. He said he was in Acid Mothers Temple, or had played with them or knew them or something. His English wasn't very good. Nice guy though!

Ian c=====8 (orion), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

man, the between-song music last night was great, too.
can - soundtracks
oneida - secret wars
(something else i know but couldnt place)
miles davis - live/evil

if only the third one had been master of reality, it would have actually been the best concert of all time.

psychic paramount was good, too. their last song was close enough to sabbath, real drony over a super-heavy riff. its just tough to remember that the first two bands were pretty good when AMT were just so incredible. EACH of those guys is amazing at their instruments. theyre so individually good, that the really amazing thing i think is how well they gel. kawabata did this thing where, at the end of a song, he hung his feedingback guitar on one of the overhead speakers and left. right before he did that was just the most blistering 5 minutes of guitar attack ive ever heard or seen. all of a sudden, shred made sense to me, but this guy wasnt just shredding...

anyway, suffice it to say - i was a fan before, but now im hooked.

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian, he had an amazing cell phone

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Mong Hang's drummer Atsushi Tanaka played with AMT.

btw, Psychic Paramount features two former members of the defunct Laddio Bolocko, and they used to have a diff drummer than the one I saw with them at this show. I got a CDR of theirs a while back from the same label that issued the LB 2-CD compilation, and it was pretty good.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 18 June 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
I revive this admittedly old tour thread because there's supposed to be a new tour next month, but Stormy Records off in Michigan just sent this:

the acid mothers show has been cancelled. some kind of visa problem.
sorry guys!

They were talking about their own in-store but it sounds like the whole tour is off? I tried going to acidmothers.com but it says 'no website is configured at this address'...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

aw fuck

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

i bought my ticket already - i guess black dice and growing might have to suffice.

BUMMER

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

hrm they were supposed to play here this week. the tour was kind of a mess anyway since their opening band, aqui, broke up.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

growing sucks; how do they get booked for good shows???1?!?

anonymous noiser (ex machina), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Whoah, bummer. I hope the Terry Riley thing is still happening at UCLA. Hmm, I better call and see about this. . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Growing are great, based on their ArthurFest show, so none of that. xpost

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

growing doesn't suck, i like 'em.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

i read somewhere - brainwashed, i think - that its only the first week of the tour that's been cancelled due to visa problems?

man, i revisited Born To Be Wild in the USA 2000 the other day, i love that semi-bootleg atmos-fug, what a mighty group in their prime (anyone heard the new configuration yet?)

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

They have Tabata from Zeni Geva playing bass these days, right?

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Toronto and Montreal were both cancelled as well. I understand that efforts are being made to reschedule for late October, so maybe all the first-week dates will get pushed to the end of the tour. Windishagency.com still has dates listed from 9/21 to 10/24, so it looks like whatever Ward Fowler read was correct.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Friday, 16 September 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Growing are great!

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Friday, 16 September 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

They aren't playing here for a whole month... 17th of October. I hope that show is still on. God damn I want to see them.

Mickey (modestmickey), Friday, 16 September 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

from the band site
* * * Unfortunately we have to cancel the concerts at least 14th and 21st of September. We have still the problem to get the US work visa from the US consulate. When we'll be able to get our visa, we're going to come to US as soon as possible. We apologize everyone who was going to come to the concert that was canceled. Anyway we really would love to come to US with all members of AMT & TCI as soon as possible!

drone/a/saur (william), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Tour's on, according to the website. I LOVE the new 'band' and really wanna see them in NYC but Ticketweb aren't selling tix online. Does anyone in New York know how much tickets are at the Knitting Factory show? Do you think it'll sell out?

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 24 September 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

ok, so are they touring or not?? Did the Visa thing get worked out?? No one seems to know. Has anyone seen them yet?

Rudy Tuesday, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

They are here. I know because we played with them and Terry Riley at UCLA on Saturday night at the Terry Riley 70th Birthday Celebration (which was pretty great- Terry sang a beautiful Indian song and played "Rainbow in Curved Air" too). AMT did "In C". They ruled. Do go check em out- it's just a fourpiece, they weren't able to bring two drummers as they had intended. Tabata kicks so much ass it's ridiculous.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 06:32 (twenty years ago)

As long as Hiroshi is there, I'm a happy man.

Tix just bought - thanks Drew!

PS "Rainbow in Curved Air" live??! FUCK!

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

I saw em in SF on Friday. they had two drummers. i forget who the second drummer was (some white guy that's in some noise/indie band in the states).

JaXoN (jaxon), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

i saw them in SF on friday and literally blew out my right ear drum. great show, until i left and couldn't hear a thing in my right ear. in any event, was kinda weird... they had a fill-in extra drummer (from subarachnoid space), and Philip Manley of Trans Am was their roadie... and Hiroshi smashed his guitar. rawk and/or roll

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

Need to check on the other LA show they're doing -- would have loved to have been at the UCLA show but a friend's birthday party took precedence!

tix were only $12!!!

(somehow ended up $35 for two with 'service fees' though - fuckin' Ticketmaster!)

I wish that they had been able to get into the country when i tried to go see them at rothko in nyc last month. it seems that we hate to bring weird japanese musicians over to the us.

i used to book my college's independent music festival and i tried to get damo suzuki, but he also couldnt get across customs.

Gonna make a day of it on Saturday in Lawrence. Been a few years since I visited Love Garden.

Denton sora sticks out like a sore thumb there, don't it?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh fiddle, I could have sworn they were playing a separate LA date. Ah well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Denton sora sticks out like a sore thumb there, don't it?

Yay Denton, the home of happiness.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

I saw Acid Mothers Temple w/Kinski at the Entry and thought they were fantastic..then a bunch of people I knew went to see them at the Triple Rock later on and said they sucked...I guess they had a more stripped down lineup and it was boring wank..the vers. I saw had about 6 or 7 people, super great chugga chugga space rockin' w/two people cranking on weird knob analog synths making sqwacks and squelches....sweet.

but maybe I have bad taste in psych and all these other folx are right...who knows?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

AMT are great and your friends are feebs. (But they could have easily just had a bad show.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

yeah....I think it might have been a "lineup" thing...I think they said it was only a four-piece....focused mainly on guitar solos....the big lineup I saw (while obv. doing lots of solos) was more focused on building up into big Hawkwind bulldozing riffs....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Huh. Well that's weird, as last time I saw them they were a four piece and my god were they focused into major riff drone.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

I guess I could see them being a band that could be pretty completely diff. depending on what night you see them, though....prog/psych is prolly hit or miss by nature. Still, the show I saw was godhead...one of my favs of the last few years!

Especially liked that the small Japanese woman on analog synth was wearing a WWE Generation DX hockey jersey!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

as much as i fucking love AMT, i do think they suffer a bit from the loss of Cotton Casino--and her Steve Austin shirts

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

I think Amoeba or some listserv told me that this is the last hurrah for this incarnation of the band. Perhaps both lineups are touring?

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i read somewhere that kawabata makoto is pretty sick of touring

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

they were a fourpiece last night, with a mix of droney riffage and monster solos from kawabata. i don't know their songs but the general pattern seemed to be 6 min of riff & variations -> 10 min freakout solo -> 6 min riff & winddown.

they didn't encore even though i thought we managed good applause for the crowd size (tiny by end)-- is this typical??

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

What's the tour-only release like this time around?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

CID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO Iao Chant From The Cosmic Inferno (Ace Fu) cd 14.98
Yes it's another Acid Mother Temple album! Apparently as necessary to life as food or oxygen, for some people...or so it would seem from the band's oft-remarked-upon release schedule, which is in fact matched by the demand for their prolific output. Seriously, though, while we joke about how many records these hairies release, we also always have to perk up and pay attention when there's a new AMT opus. 'Cause most of the time, they're well worth hearing -- this one in particular certainly is, we've gotta say.
Consisting of one 50 plus minute long track entitled "OM Riff from The Cosmic Inferno", this actually sounds quite a bit like AQ faves Circle! Andee thought it *was* Circle when he first heard it, actually. The "chant" you hear is all hyper and Magmoid, twinned with a Circle-like, chugging, insistent rhythm that plows through a universe of swooshing bleeping blooping electronic space soundz. It's repetitive and hypnotic and maybe even spiritually meaningful. An electric Buddhist drug thing you wouldn't understand...but it's fun trying. The chanting gives way to purely instrumental, sorta psychedelic soundtracky passages, but then at at about 23 minutes a heavy, groovy bassline kicks in, and Kawabata unleashes the motorpsycho darkness of his guitar, getting just a wee bit Keiji Haino on us. Later still the chant resurfaces, even more cranked and intense and things just get crazier and heavier. It's all very kosmic and freaky, reminding us like we said of Circle, and even darker stuff like Yeti and Tarantula Hawk, and of course '70s forefathers Hawkwind. And oh yeah Kawabata busts out the hurdy gurdy on here as well. Recommended, especially to AMT fans who also like Circle (which is, we'd imagine, a lot of you).

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

yeah, no encores from them is pretty typical. i've only ever seen em do one encore and it was a one-minute song.

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Yay to the sound of that -- but is that the actual on-tour-only thing or a separate 'regular' release? They usually sell at least one new CDR on the road.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Yea, I don't know -- but I wanted to highlight the name lineup change.

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

I didn't have enough $$ to pick up any AMT merch. :(

But $5 more.

Hiroshi has some long fingers!

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

The first time I saw them it was like a mindblowing Amon Duul II / Hawkwind manic space riffing thing but the second time it was more like watching the wanky metal dudes that work at the guitar store do an impromptu jam. I don't remember if there were any lineup differences but it seems like they can be pretty hit or miss.

what the FUCK

the band isn't actually playing at this venue. they're at some other small bar in Asheville. I just got off the phone with some bitchy woman from the Grey Eagle who was not helpful at all. ugh, get your shit together, tour managers!

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 17 October 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

Same thing happened in NYC. They were supposed to play the Knitting Factory, and a good friend of mine works there, so I figured I was in like Flynn. But for some reason, it's Knitting Factory 'PRESENTS' AMT, and the show is at the Canal Room. Oh well. It's money well spent, anyway, and I'm pretty excited.

Killa Hill (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 17 October 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Does anybody know for sure that AMT did manage to get into the country by now? I can't get on the phone with the venue they actually are at, and am about to hit the road for a 2 hour drive to this show.

i think i might also be taking a final that morning??

river wolf, Monday, 9 April 2007 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

That could be an issue.

At the very least, they do tour over here every chance they get, but you never know which tour could be the last, so.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 April 2007 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

$20 CDRs - c/d?

Steve Shasta, Monday, 9 April 2007 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

So long as you only buy one at a time. (I see it's vinyl this time out.)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 April 2007 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

$20 for a CDr is mad whack. $20 r@re lathed shit is ok tho

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Monday, 9 April 2007 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

Acid Mothers Gong at Victoriaville this year...also Keiji Haino/Merzbow, Melvins, Zorn solo... odd-numbered years have had good lineups lately. Wish I could make it this year, but no go.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 9 April 2007 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

Rock Hardy: That sounds amazing. Wish I could go, too.

novaheat, Monday, 9 April 2007 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

Here's the full lineup: http://fimav.qc.ca/en/2007/programmation/
It would definitely be worth the constant aroma of cow shit for five days this year, but my money is pledged elsewhere.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 9 April 2007 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

YES. April 21st. Asheville, NC. 10 minutes away from the venue.

Sum Fitch, Monday, 9 April 2007 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

Sum Fitch, if i can fit it into my work schedule, i'm definitely going to that one too. FAP?!

modestmickey, Monday, 9 April 2007 23:58 (nineteen years ago)

Very, very good show. High spirits and humor and brain melting fuzz, so no change there then. "Baby Pink Lemonade" and "La Novia" made the usual appearances but these were probably the best versions I've seen of 'em so far.

Picked up the split tour release from their Japanese tour last month with Trad, Gras och Stenar, new studio tracks from both. Will listen to it here in a bit.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 14 April 2007 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

"Pink Lady Lemonade," rather. Was too early.

So far this split release is great! And is an actual CD rather than a CDR and only costs $15, for those who care -- almost an hour long, 3 Trad Gras tracks, 2 AMT. Apparently only 500 copies made so if you like both bands I'd say grab this as long as they're selling it.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 14 April 2007 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

wow, i wish trad gras was on the us tour

am0n, Saturday, 14 April 2007 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Mammatus are an okay band but I admit not the end of the world for me.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 14 April 2007 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

Dear all of my friends & colleagues,

I'm terribly sorry and very sad to tell you this, but we must cancel this time ZENI GEVA tour.

Because my mother was suddenly felled by a brain hemorrhage at the night of April 3rd and she has been still in the hospital getting intensive care at ICU. Fortunately she escaped death, however the situation doesn't allow premature conclusions and still there're so many things to do. Of course, this is totally unexpected and very very shock to me. I am only her son, I am the only one in charge of looking after her and take responsibility for all of her life. Mother is not just a one of a family members, you know. At this moment it's absolutely impossible for me to leave my mother behind and go to Europe for 1 month. At this moment I cannot think of anything but taking care of my mother and wishing her recovery. I must stay here and look after my Mom.

I want all of you know that I was really looking forward to this tour and really excited and ready to "rock" with very strong & high motivation. I've never thought if I would cancel the tour at all. But in this situation here now, I have no choice. I hope you understand. I'm terribly sorry for any & all inconveniences and troubles may be caused by this cancellation.

Please accept my sincere apologies from the bottom of my heart.
I'm sorry again and thank you very much for your understanding & support.

Sincerely regards,

kk null

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 24 January 2008 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

i'm really interested in American roots music and Country music in these years
.

yikes. be very afraid.

Kawabata's blog is a nice surprise. he comes across as very down to earth, very cool, just another music-loving dork who can't keep his enthusiasm bottled up, be it for Jeff Beck or for some Frog-rock obscurity. dispels some of the strong misgivings i've had about AMT's relentlessly collector-baiting promotional tactics. K clearly just loves music and gets off on sharing that love. no crime in that. and, huh, he can expresses himself pretty well in English. so what's with this "sorry - no speak Engrish" front AMT put up whenever they come to town?

Mr. Hal Jam, Thursday, 24 January 2008 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Really have to say -- having seen them various times over the years, last night's show was easily one of their best. Last couple of times had almost been 'standard' AMT, but while it was still very much them in full effect there were more new/random song choices and experiments, and even "Pink Lady Lemonade" got a bit of a redo via two different versions, the first starting off on acoustic guitar.

Also, Kinski killed as per usual so show up early if you have the chance to see them too here on the West Coast. Sonic Suicide Squad were all right enough, noise/free jazz roar but I think Zu works in the same field with better focus.

i would bring yer own earplugs to the entry, they normally have them but sometimes they forget/dont bother to check.

I BLAME JESUS (jjjusten), Saturday, 4 April 2009 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

the fact that it's on a friday makes it sort of a no-brainer for me. it's basically the one day of the week i can go out guilt-free

i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Saturday, 4 April 2009 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

i mean legal capacity for the entry is 250 (which is horrorshow style packed btw). am i missing something here about how few people would want to see AMT? last time they played at the triple rock which is way way bigger, maybe that show didnt do well?

I BLAME JESUS (jjjusten), Saturday, 4 April 2009 19:16 (seventeen years ago)

鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

i would totally go see them again if i didn't have class. last year's show was great--i don't have any of their records (my gf does) and we go in and they've already started, these seriously decrepit-looking dudes playing super-slow space rock, and i'm like is this going to be kind of lol but mostly sad.....of course after 15 minutes it was obvious that i was wrong and they totally kicked ass.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

Yep. I saw the Vancouver show last week. First time seeing them and it was great. I guess it was a compact line-up. Just four of them - I think they sometimes have more. But this was space rock as she is meant to be played. Kinski played too and that was equally fantastic. They are now hard, tight and fast and not so much in the Mogwai mould from when I last saw them a few years back. I have not felt this stimulated at a live show for ages. You'll not be disappointed I think.

everything, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

I just read upthread a bit. Earplugs not required unless your the type that always uses them. It wasn't oppresively loud. The sound was perfect.

everything, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

my experience at previous shows has been, they start, and i'm kind of "yeah, this is ok," and things go on a little and at some point i lose track of it all and i sort of come to in the middle of this howling cloud of rock and i can't remember quite how i got there. (and that's without being on anything stronger than alcohol.)

would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

Lineup appeared to be as listed above, though replace "acoustic guitar" with "bitchin' clarinet". I kinda expected them to play one 1-hr song but they played a set of songs kinda! With verses sometimes! Mokoto rubbing his guitar on his ass, holding his guitar over his head by the trem arm, swinging it wildly by the neck. Guitar hanging from the ceiling. Bass dude sings a lot. He makes chromatic shredding groove somehow!? Really liked him. Great, great show.
