They found boxes of Kain's The Blue Guerilla album years ago and they were selling them for a buck apiece at 3rd Street Jazz and I only bought two at the time. Shoulda bought a whole box of them.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 31 May 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

How many are in the box? If it's 10 or more I'll pay the 24 pahnd.

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 31 May 2004 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

does rocket girl release records any more?

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 31 May 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The cost above is per LP... (sorry if it's not clear)

Rocket Girl is having a break right now....but yes there will be more releases in the future...

rocket girl, Monday, 31 May 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

that's exorbitant. that is good news on the rocket girl future comeback.

ANyway to bring it back, as 'twere, is a vinyl E&W worth whats probably over $50AUD? Blimey. Shouldve nicked the ex's copy while I had the chance.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 31 May 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Ned shall have at you for that remark, Jess ;P

Quite. Rocket Girl aka V. Joshi is VERY cool and I will testify to that as a friend of some years' standing now. Unlike some characters who have posted here offering their wares, she has known about and occasionally contributed to ILX for a long while.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 May 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not entirely sure of the going rate for the vinyl but i know there are still copies of the "reissued" cd version floating about.

fwiw the mastering on the vinyl LP is pretty decent, it's a nice sounding piece of vinyl. i paid A$30 for it a good ten years ago and never regretted it.

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Monday, 31 May 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a copy of the CD - it isnt worth anything tho surely?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

yes and no. it was pretty rare for ages until (depending on who you believe) a stack were "found at a distributors" or it was "repressed" or it was straight-up bootlegged (quite well though i thought) and then there were quite a few copies around and the price went down. those seem to have dried up now so perhaps the value is on the way back up?

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

the interest in this stuff isn't nearly as high as it is for CD copies of the Creation-era EPs

chris andrews (fraew), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

This track, perhaps called "2" was made by Kevin Shields specifically for the La La La Human Steps dance troupe production also called simply 2 (from 1995 - video clips can be found here. I believe Michael Apted also made a film that was played during the performance. It sounds like an extended take of one of the incidental interstitial tracks from To Here Knows When and Loveless. However, I also think it's somehow much more beautiful than any of those. I am desperate to find a high quality recording of this track. Like MBV's "Sugar" before, it's now my holy grail of music! I've contacted the La La La Human Steps but unfortunately, no CD was ever made...

ufo, Monday, 29 March 2021 22:53 (five years ago)

most exciting part of that

Recently Andy produced, engineered and mixed the critically lauded debut record for BLACK COUNTRY, NEW ROAD, ‘For the first time’. He has also been co-producing and mixing for Domino Records signings SORRY, producing and mixing singles for LADYBIRD, PUREST and JOAN as well as the latest EP by Brighton band FUR. He has also been recording the new album for MY BLOODY VALENTINE and worked with KEVIN SHIELDS on remastering ‘loveless’ and ‘isn’t anything’ for Vinyl. He mixed for another Domino records signing PETER PERRET, Brighton band DREAM WIFE as well as the debut album for Memphis Industries MUSH. Plus he added production and mixed LIZ LAWRENCE’S pity party album.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 03:51 (five years ago)

I remember back in the day that Kev made noises about the CDs being the most accurate rendition of Loveless, refused to send promos on cassette I think. I believe the unique thing about the 2018 vinyl was that they reassembled the track segues from the original analogue elements because it’d all been done in the digital domain originally.

Relistening to mbv now for the first time in a while...I think I like it a lot more now than I did when it came out. In 2013 it felt kind of disappointing, but almost anything they released would have seemed that way in comparison to Loveless. I wanted it to be another collection of melted power-pop tunes like Loveless, and instead it's a collection of experiments in repetition and mood. I appreciate what it's doing a lot more, these days.

ah there are actually some new remasters - the standard edition vinyls are "mastered from new hi-res uncompressed digital sources". sounds like the deluxe vinyls are the same as the 2018 analogue remasters though and all the digital releases are the same as 2012.

ufo, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 07:52 (five years ago)

is this the kind of "full catalogue reissue" where their full catalogue is not, in fact, reissued?

Bastard Lakes (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 31 March 2021 08:44 (five years ago)

it's their full catalogue as much as they haven't really acknowledged the existence of anything before "you made me realise" for over 30 years now and i didn't really expect them to start now

ufo, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 08:58 (five years ago)

the vinyl reissues are going fast, I've picked up a standard Loveless and the deluxe Isn't Anything, and the EPs/Rarities thing which comes in a fancy CD case apparently.

Sven Vath's scary carpet (Neil S), Wednesday, 31 March 2021 09:00 (five years ago)

Ordered the deluxe Isn't Anything and Loveless. Got the Plain Recordings reissue 15 years ago and have a og Loveless cd. The former looks gorgeous but is supposedly sourced from cd masters so decided to go for these new reissues. Got the m b v vinyl when it came out and though I agree the quality of the cover isn't much (mine arrived in great shape though) I figured there's no need to get the new one. The EP/rarities collection is great.

willem, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 09:11 (five years ago)

yeah I picked up m b v on vinyl when it came out too, seems fine to me in all respects so no need to get another copy of that

ufo, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 09:28 (five years ago)

Yeah, even with Billinda in, and as you say being able to draw lines to the later work, they clearly haven’t *become* the second band yet.

(Every band after 1994 should have considered following the Beastie Boys’ lead in reissuing their early, developmental work on a compilation called Some Old Bullshit. Just make it as universal a title as Greatest Hits, that signals which kind of listener it’s for.)

NYT piece I’m too lazy to link to bc I finished reading and closed the tab but they’re recording two new albums, one traditionally MBV-sounding and the other more experimental? okay

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Wednesday, 31 March 2021 12:15 (five years ago)

here's the piece: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/31/arts/music/my-bloody-valentine-shields.html

the most interesting bits:

Shields said he’d also like to reissue the band’s earliest releases, recorded with the singer David Conway, once they can be properly remastered.

Right now, the band’s members are waiting to see when they can get together in person at Shields’s home studio — O’Ciosoig also lives in Ireland, while Butcher and Googe are in England — to begin recording. If that can’t happen, they’ll explore remote options. Shields said the first of the two albums will be “warm and melodic,” while the second will be more experimental — a stark evolution from what he called his otherwise “very traditional” writing process to date.

As for a timeline for release, he didn’t say. (“I think once I can get over to Ireland it will get done very quickly as my vocals are often the last thing to be recorded,” Butcher wrote. “They’ll probably be finished by the end of the year.”)

so this is just kevin is still working on stuff but nothing's done yet

I'll leave this one (the closing sentence) here though, re:- your last quote:

“My nieces and nephews — they would complain to me, because when they would try and show their friends, they can’t find it anywhere,” Shields said. “They’re like, ‘Why are you so purposely obscure? maf you one two (maffew12), Wednesday, 31 March 2021 19:51 (five years ago)

I mean, I get that it's a challenge for determining the success of reissues, even before you consider the pressing plant delays, but it seems kinda baffling to make such a big buzz about reissues in limited quantities. I mean, they had a benchmark from 2018 to gauge the popularity, no? Seeing everything get released in such small runs is a bummer.

piscesx, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 21:39 (five years ago)

A lot of bands/record labels have been upgrading their videos to HD or even 4K in some instances in the past year or two. In a lot of cases they just replaced the existing video that was already there.
Especially impressive are the restored 4K videos for the singles from Alanis Morisette's Jagged Little Pill.

still love the fact that re the 2012 reissues : lots of news re the 2cd edition of Loveless having a remastered edition of the digital and analogue version.
then they supposedly mixed up the labelling on the cds.
not that it was possible to tell any difference from what i can recall.

~ please tell me if i need to rip the other cd in my 2cd set (no idea which one i ripped at the time) and experience a massive difference ~

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 April 2021 19:31 (five years ago)

to add to the confusion.. while the new deluxe versions of loveless and isn’t anything are claimed to be “fully analog” while the standard versions are from “hi res digital”, this doesn’t seem to be the case for mbv with the difference between the deluxe and the standard version being a different sleeve only, as far as i can tell from the description.

and don’t forget about the 2018 analog remasters including rejected pressings of isn’t anything as extras (at least that’s what i got, were there similar pressings of loveless?)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 2 April 2021 12:56 (five years ago)

I actually don't mind the (generic) lyrics all that much, they're barely intelligible anyway. It's the melodic contour of a song like 'Blown a Wish' that impels a kind of visceral disgust on my end. Maybe it's, uh, genetic – I've always hated twee-sounding music, even when I was a wee kid. Come to think of it, much of what I dislike about Loveless is of the same order as what I dislike about Pet Sounds, except MBV peddles quantifiably less of it and has those awesome geetars to make up for it.

New and long Kevin Shields interview in today's Libération. One great tidbit - dunno if this is old news but it was new to me - is his love for early De La Soul and Public Enemy and how their use of sampling evoked Long Island in the '70s for him. Then he realized both groups were from LI!

SQUIRREL MEAT!! (Capitaine Jay Vee), Wednesday, 14 April 2021 10:13 (five years ago)

No mention of William Joel ?

calstars, Wednesday, 14 April 2021 11:16 (five years ago)

Nope. But he does put to the rest the idea that AR Kane were an influence. Says he admired their stuff up to 1990 but MBV were going in an entirely different direction.

No more sorry

Alba, Monday, 19 April 2021 15:04 (five years ago)

he does put to the rest the idea that AR Kane were an influence
I have never thought that at the time or since, other than many post-Mary Chain bands were influencing each other and the aesthetic moment was driven by similar goals.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 19 April 2021 15:34 (five years ago)

his love for early De La Soul and Public Enemy
They sampled PE on "Instrumental B". Love the bit about LI memories.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 19 April 2021 15:35 (five years ago)

kevin shields on nts1 for the next hour starting from now

building a hole (NickB), Monday, 19 April 2021 15:59 (five years ago)

apparently j played a new dino jr song, wonder if kevin will play new MBV. doubt it

global tetrahedron, Monday, 19 April 2021 17:14 (five years ago)

turned out to be a chat among the band, mostly reminiscing about their early days with each of them picking a couple of (other people's) tunes

j also played the theme song to the detectorists on his slot along with gbh and eater

https://www.thejakartapost.com/life/2021/05/18/still-gliding-my-bloody-valentines-shields-talks-new-albums-southeast-asian-sounds.html

new interview where shields says that the two new albums are currently both planned for release next year, but there should be still some new music released this year (presumably pre-release singles?). i'll believe it when i hear it but i feel a little more optimistic than his previous promises of 'a new EP soon' etc. because we've heard more about the process in this year's interviews etc.

ufo, Tuesday, 18 May 2021 21:25 (five years ago)

i think the concrete moves, signing to domino, getting on streaming, bode well. i don't trust anything he says but it seems like he realizes the band won't last forever

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 18 May 2021 21:48 (five years ago)

yeah, m b v was preceded by similar concrete moves like the remasters finally coming out so that's more reason to be optimistic too

Is it really the same original lead singer guy singing on Geek as on “Lovely Sweet Darlene”? Talk about a major change in singing styles. Why yes I am doing an MBV deep dive right now thanks for asking. Their early stuff is supposed to totally suck, but I actually don’t think it’s all that bad! Derivative as all hell, but still fun and noisy.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 9 May 2022 14:29 (four years ago)

ikr, I remember listening to Tiger In My Tank on yt and every other comment was "wow they really sucked in the early days, huh?" and you know it might be a Cramps knock-off, but it's a good Cramps knock-off, plenty to appreciate even that early on.

Portrait Of A Dissolvi Ng Drea M (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 9 May 2022 14:37 (four years ago)

Just clocking the "there should be still some new music released this year" post from May 2021. Sigh. Shields. Fucks sake man.

I know ranked lists are highly subjective, but I still can't believe there's no mention of "Only Shallow" or "Loomer" in the Guardian's top twenty.

I can't tell if he's trolling or not (ilxor), Thursday, 2 February 2023 18:48 (three years ago)

I reviewed Loveless when it came out and decided “Loomer” was my favourite track. It’s overlooked too often.

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 2 February 2023 19:42 (three years ago)

Alexis was asking us on FB about what we would choose for such a list, my own choice was "Don't Ask Why" (in that all the obvious ones I could think of would likely be in there). I think "Only Shallow" is more of a US thing since that was the actual single as such over here, promowise at least.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 February 2023 20:48 (three years ago)

I know these things are daft but Cupid Come and You Never Should

kraudive, Thursday, 2 February 2023 22:28 (three years ago)

I always considered "Lose My Breath" top-tier MBV, and always assumed that was an opinion shared by many fans. But maybe not? Even more befuddling is the omission of "Loomer" and "Cupid Come," as others have already mentioned. Weird list.

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 2 February 2023 23:11 (three years ago)

goddamn, that’s my favourite Isn’t Anything track as well!!

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 2 February 2023 23:24 (three years ago)

You Never Should would be in my top ten

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 3 February 2023 00:08 (three years ago)

does "What You Want" count? it's the least listened to track on Loveless via Spotify.

it's tough to call anything on Loveless a deep cut, but to me, it's my very favorite song of theirs and represents so much of what they do incredibly well, at the peak of their powers, all in the same song

its become one of my favs on loveless. "to here knows when" is still my #1 but "loomer and "wyw" are in the top 3 of loveless.

I’d say all of Tremolo EP

Lose My Breath is easily my favorite MBV song.

You know how your phone brings up memories? Six years ago today I saw My Bloody Valentine at the Shrine in downtown LA.

Time flies.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 23 July 2024 05:11 (one year ago)

My ears will never be the same. Much louder than the Loveless tour.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 23 July 2024 05:16 (one year ago)

didn't they play the Santa Monica Civic at one point? V jealous of anyone who saw that one.

encino morricone (majorairbro), Tuesday, 23 July 2024 05:21 (one year ago)

I saw them at the Roxy two out of the three nights, Loveless tour. I moved to San Francisco for six years so maybe they played there then?

Bee OK, Tuesday, 23 July 2024 05:29 (one year ago)

I was at that Shrine gig too (along with the second Santa Monic Civic gig). The whole story is in the "Return Of MBV" thread. If I had to single out any one show it would be the Coachella warm-up show at the El Rey.
