Quite. Rocket Girl aka V. Joshi is VERY cool and I will testify to that as a friend of some years' standing now. Unlike some characters who have posted here offering their wares, she has known about and occasionally contributed to ILX for a long while.

fwiw the mastering on the vinyl LP is pretty decent, it's a nice sounding piece of vinyl. i paid A$30 for it a good ten years ago and never regretted it.

the pressing was ok. unfortunately, by the time it arrived at my doorstep, the cover/gatefold had tears and rips in two different places, and a skin on the first track. i love m b v but i will be waiting until i can buy a copy at my local store

I remember back in the day that Kev made noises about the CDs being the most accurate rendition of Loveless, refused to send promos on cassette I think. I believe the unique thing about the 2018 vinyl was that they reassembled the track segues from the original analogue elements because it’d all been done in the digital domain originally.

Nice to see that Kevin, on top of a load of cables on his vast and beautiful mixing console, has the same cheapo Tandy SPL meter that I've had for the last 25 years :)

The 2018 vinyl reissues of both albums are stupendous, they sound completely amazing and the sleeves are really nice too. It's a shame they are out of print and go for so much money second hand. It would be nice if they gave mbv the same treatment since that sleeve is shit.

Relistening to mbv now for the first time in a while...I think I like it a lot more now than I did when it came out. In 2013 it felt kind of disappointing, but almost anything they released would have seemed that way in comparison to Loveless. I wanted it to be another collection of melted power-pop tunes like Loveless, and instead it's a collection of experiments in repetition and mood. I appreciate what it's doing a lot more, these days.

ah there are actually some new remasters - the standard edition vinyls are "mastered from new hi-res uncompressed digital sources". sounds like the deluxe vinyls are the same as the 2018 analogue remasters though and all the digital releases are the same as 2012.

the vinyl reissues are going fast, I've picked up a standard Loveless and the deluxe Isn't Anything, and the EPs/Rarities thing which comes in a fancy CD case apparently.

Ordered the deluxe Isn't Anything and Loveless. Got the Plain Recordings reissue 15 years ago and have a og Loveless cd. The former looks gorgeous but is supposedly sourced from cd masters so decided to go for these new reissues. Got the m b v vinyl when it came out and though I agree the quality of the cover isn't much (mine arrived in great shape though) I figured there's no need to get the new one. The EP/rarities collection is great.

Yeah, even with Billinda in, and as you say being able to draw lines to the later work, they clearly haven’t *become* the second band yet.

(Every band after 1994 should have considered following the Beastie Boys’ lead in reissuing their early, developmental work on a compilation called Some Old Bullshit. Just make it as universal a title as Greatest Hits, that signals which kind of listener it’s for.)

I'm not pulling the trigger on it myself, but there's a preorder for the m b v LP (no idea which edition) on amazon's canadian site. idk if there are others, but if you're desperate and don't mind giving them a few of your dollars (I won't judge), I'd keep checking there.

As a long time fan with all the versions of the music I'll ever need, the best thing about this are the t-shirt re-issues. I can finally replace my long-lost maroon 'Loveless' T. I don't think I'd wear the 'Glider' long sleeve again, but it's awesome.

A lot of bands/record labels have been upgrading their videos to HD or even 4K in some instances in the past year or two. In a lot of cases they just replaced the existing video that was already there.
Especially impressive are the restored 4K videos for the singles from Alanis Morisette's Jagged Little Pill.

I actually don't mind the (generic) lyrics all that much, they're barely intelligible anyway. It's the melodic contour of a song like 'Blown a Wish' that impels a kind of visceral disgust on my end. Maybe it's, uh, genetic – I've always hated twee-sounding music, even when I was a wee kid. Come to think of it, much of what I dislike about Loveless is of the same order as what I dislike about Pet Sounds, except MBV peddles quantifiably less of it and has those awesome geetars to make up for it.

New and long Kevin Shields interview in today's Libération. One great tidbit - dunno if this is old news but it was new to me - is his love for early De La Soul and Public Enemy and how their use of sampling evoked Long Island in the '70s for him. Then he realized both groups were from LI!

new interview where shields says that the two new albums are currently both planned for release next year, but there should be still some new music released this year (presumably pre-release singles?). i'll believe it when i hear it but i feel a little more optimistic than his previous promises of 'a new EP soon' etc. because we've heard more about the process in this year's interviews etc.

i think the concrete moves, signing to domino, getting on streaming, bode well. i don't trust anything he says but it seems like he realizes the band won't last forever

Is it really the same original lead singer guy singing on Geek as on “Lovely Sweet Darlene”? Talk about a major change in singing styles. Why yes I am doing an MBV deep dive right now thanks for asking. Their early stuff is supposed to totally suck, but I actually don’t think it’s all that bad! Derivative as all hell, but still fun and noisy.

ikr, I remember listening to Tiger In My Tank on yt and every other comment was "wow they really sucked in the early days, huh?" and you know it might be a Cramps knock-off, but it's a good Cramps knock-off, plenty to appreciate even that early on.

I know ranked lists are highly subjective, but I still can't believe there's no mention of "Only Shallow" or "Loomer" in the Guardian's top twenty.

I reviewed Loveless when it came out and decided “Loomer” was my favourite track. It’s overlooked too often.

Alexis was asking us on FB about what we would choose for such a list, my own choice was "Don't Ask Why" (in that all the obvious ones I could think of would likely be in there). I think "Only Shallow" is more of a US thing since that was the actual single as such over here, promowise at least.

I saw them at the Roxy two out of the three nights, Loveless tour. I moved to San Francisco for six years so maybe they played there then?

I was at that Shrine gig too (along with the second Santa Monic Civic gig). The whole story is in the "Return Of MBV" thread. If I had to single out any one show it would be the Coachella warm-up show at the El Rey.
