I hate their sound, I hate their aesthetic, but most of all, I hate that guy's hair.

I couldn't tell who the band was in the video, because they had all these far scarier looking actor types lip-syncing the video instead

The only band i can stand with a close enough vocal timbre like that is the Toy Dolls. But they're the Toy Dolls!

when did all the "punk" and "hardcore" bands switch to this awful photoshopped, grainy, puke green/brown/red, sans serif design scheme?

Sans serif is great fool! Fuck a serif!

The guy who DJ's the friendly neighborhood Sunday night local & indie show loves these guys and I can't figure out why. I don't find them particularly off-putting, but, at the same time, I don't hear much to be excited about.

But then again, this is 30-something guy who also loves Bright Eyes. If you can't see through that schtick once you reach your mid-twenties, you may be a lost cause.

two months pass...
"A Flavor House Atlantic" (their big single) is seriously my best song this summer. I can understand that a lot of people would be put off by this kind of thing, but I would have imagined that some of the people on this website would love this song. I had heard it many times on my MP3 before seeing the video, which was a disappointment. The rest of the album is painfully disappointing too, but that single! This and the Yellowcard "Ocean Avenue" are seriously IT and I'm genuinely shocked that ILMERS don't mention this stuff more (i guess it has been a few months, but there's a new Usher Raymond 'Burn' thread) Well, hopefully this will spark some discussion of that particular single...are you in or are you out?

A Fever Louse Epileptic has better lyrics?:
your eyes tell the stories of a day you wish you could
recall the moments that once have
retract the footsteps that brought us to this favor
i wouldn't ask this of you

good eye sniper
i'll shoot you run

the words you scribbled on the walls
the loss of friends, you didn't have
i'll call you when the time is right
are you in or are you out
for them all to know the end of us all

run quick they're behind us
didn't think we'd ever make it
this close to safety in one piece
now you want to kill me
in the act of what could maybe
save us from sleep and what we are

good eye sniper
i'll shoot you run

the words you scribbled on the walls
the loss of friends, you didn't have
i'll call you when the time is right
are you in or are you out
for them all to know the end of us all

bye, bye beautiful
don't bother to write
disturbed by your words and they're calling all cars
face step let down, face step...step down

the words you scribbled on the walls
the loss of friends, you didn't have
i'll call you when the time is right
are you in or are you out
for them all to know

bye, bye beautiful
don't bother to write
disturbed by your words and they're calling all cars
face step let down, face step...step down

disturbed by your words and they're calling all cars

Just a small town girl, livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin' anywhere
Just a city boy, born and raised in south Detroit
He took the midnight train goin' anywhere

A singer in a smokey room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waiting, up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlights people, living just to find emotion
Hiding, somewhere in the night

Working hard to get my fill,
everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anything to roll the dice,
just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

(chorus)

Don't stop believin'
Hold on to the feelin'
Streetlight people

They're nothing to be proud about enjoying, which I don't entirely, but I don't hate them nearly as much as Simple Plan, New Found Glory, Good Charlotte, etc. On one of those late Sunday night radio shows, I heard a song that is apparently titled "The Velourium Camper III: Al The Killer" according to the program's website, which I thought was surprisingly decent.

I give them a 5 out of 10.

OK, I'm being forced to see these guys - and these guys alone (we're parachuting in and out) - at Sonisphere tomorrow. I have never knowingly heard a note of their music and by christ I'm not exactly looking forward to doing so having read this thread.

I'm staring at their Spotify page and it scares me. Where do I start? Do I have a chance of appreciating them on any level if my "standard" taste leans towards Pulp, Cornelius, The Cure, Belle & Sebastian and The Flaming Lips?

The voice is the biggest stumbling block, to be sure. If you can get past that, or find some way to ignore it, I think they do have some pretty interesting instrumental compositions. Just don't try to follow the lyrics or try to work out any narrative, you'll just drive yourself effing crazy.

one year passes...

Wow. How many other musicians have gotten arrested for armed robbery 10 minutes before their own show?

Michael (Mic) Todd, bassist of Coheed And Cambria, was arrested for armed robbery earlier tonight minutes before the band was suppose to open for Soundgarden at the Comcast Center in Mansfield, MA. According to the TMZ, Todd allegedly walked into a Walgreens in Attleboro, MA with a fake bomb. He threatened to blow up the store if he wasn’t given Oxycontin. Todd made off with six bottles of the pain pill before police tracked the cab he escaped in. He was arrested outside of the concert’s venue, and officially charged with armed robbery and unlawful possession of prescription narcotics.

Coheed And Cambria confirmed this news, and that they would continue on with their scheduled dates despite what happened, shortly after the incident. They releasing the following statement:

“Michael Todd was arrested today on what we consider very serious charges and therefore he will not be finishing up the current tour. Wes Styles, long time member of the Coheed family will take on bass duties starting tomorrow for the remaining dates. No shows will be canceled.

We are surprised to say the least and will address the situation with Michael after the tour. For now, we just want to have a great time out here and finish with some killer shows in Boston, Poughkeepsie, Quebec City and Halifax.”

Unfortunately, this is not the first time the bassist has had a problem with drugs. Todd left Coheed AndCambria in 2006 due to a growing addiction to heroin. However, after a stint in rehab, Todd returned to the band in 2007. Nonetheless, this news comes as an enormous shock. It almost seems to crazy to be true, seeing how busy the band has been as of late (both with their opening gigs for Soundgarden and their 10th Anniversary tour this past Spring). However, it’s clear that Todd still struggles with addiction and we hope he receives the help he obviously needs.

Woooow this thread is full on pretentiousness by people who came to the party almost a decade late (they peaked in '02, '04 ish), then continue to slam them when only hearing a sample of their work.

Second stage turbine blade is a great 'emo' album. And when these kids grow up having nostalgia for New Found Glory, Good Charolotte etc. you will all be hoping Coheed and Cambria were on the radio instead.

been listening to 'IV' a lot recently ..
(i know its not the real album title, but thats all i can recall)

however, do i need more ?
i suspect not.

Which IV? From Fear or No World? I was really into Vol. 1 when I was younger and only recently started to appreciate Vol. 2.

hourspass, Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:02 (nine years ago) link

ooh .. ok .. hang on :

'Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV : From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness'

the cardboard sleeve just has a massive 'IV'on it, so just assumed that was what the album had become known as ..

(still no idea as to how that answers your question !)

mark e, Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:10 (nine years ago) link

Just curious. I've been starting to appreciate all the stuff that I didn't care about before (except for Year of the Black Rainbow, which I can't get into).

This is the most cursing I've ever heard in a Coheed song, and I wonder if it is indicative of what we should expect from this album.

hourspass, Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:14 (nine years ago) link

oh lol i was going to rep the afterman and then saw i did upthread. i think it's kind of their best record after second stage turbine blade at this point

excited for the new record, doubly excited that the new song kinda sounds like boston/the cult

these answers tell me nothing re the album i have !

(and whether it is representative of their groove .. )

mark e, Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:28 (nine years ago) link

i mean, is mine part of a 'story', or a one off !!?

i get very confused re this lot.

something that never happens re black veiled brides ..

ahem.

mark e, Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:29 (nine years ago) link

oh lol

you have the first volume of good apollo i'm burning star iv, which is the fourth chapter of the series

the second half of iv is called no world for tomorrow. it is less good but still pretty ok

if you want more songs in line with the record you're digging, i recommend in keeping secrets of silent earth:3 and also the afterman

but yeah it's a very representative record, even though the last four tracks on good apollo i'm burning star iv from fear through the eyes of madness (christ) are the proggiest they ever get

Oh, sorry. Yeah, pretty much everything ^^ has said.
I think that Vol. 1 might have been their most popular album? It's pretty good, and he's totally right about In Keeping Secrets.
As far as the story, I think it's the end of that story arc with Claudio? It's either the end or close to the end. Year of the Black Rainbow is a sort of prequel and Afterman is Sirius Amory.

I think I just outed myself as a giant CoCa nerd.

hourspass, Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:42 (nine years ago) link

lol right i think once you write a prequel to a prequel it's prob time to stop

ta people.

i'm still confused.

and people laff at my love of 70s prog !

so, in summary, i would be best buying more black veil brides albums.

(i really really like 'wretched and divine' )

mark e, Thursday, 9 July 2015 20:56 (nine years ago) link

one thing i really dislike about good apollo iv vol 1 is uh how misogynistic it is? and it is literally the only coheed record like that

Brad I'm gonna let you finish but this is emphatically not power metal

a nice side effect of this record is it made me revisit no world for tomorrow which is way more awesome than i remembered it being especially this song

every time i hear "time consumer" i get impressed all over again that it is basically a mid-'90s emo song

one year passes...

Hearing from a friend at tonight's show that drummer passed out on stage. Ambulance called.

Hope he is ok.

ten months pass...

Kinda wish the moral wasn't so "bitches, man" but otherwise I appreciate the spirit of this.

all around shorter song lengths and more textural variety than vaxis i, i think for the better

"a disappearing act" is the kind of pop/disco/metal track i think i've only heard from devin townsend before

i haven’t been able to stop listening to coheed this week. really strong discog, only one album i don’t really rate and it’s the antiprog/anticoncept one (color before the sun) and even then it has an amazing song called “island”

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 10:19 (two years ago) link

i decided that “ten speed” is their very best song though. it even helps that it’s about a sentient bicycle demon

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 11:04 (two years ago) link

This is much better than Vaxis I. I absolutely love the last three songs, especially the last one where they really lean into the prog theatricality.

i'm gonna have to spin this eventually. think I stopped at the album that wasn't conceptual, cos I didn't like it.

but I like the ridiculous bombastic stuff

The run of the last three tracks should do you just fine, for sure.

the album that wasn’t conceptual is their weakest easy, i wish it weren’t the case. vaxis i is bloated but also so packed with great songs it’s hard to complain. and vaxis ii corrects for the bloatedness

josh eppard did a drumeo session and it is soooo good. the angle of his ride cymbal will always baffle me (i'm guessing it gives it a really choked sound/short attack and he likes it that way) but can't argue with the results
