Isn't she?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, lined up to duet with Jamie Callum at next year's Brit Awards as we type

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

she runs rings round so many other female mcs. arf arf

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Thursday, 20 May 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i take it everyone has heard the feline mix. that is OTM. heavy shit.

single out next month and she features alongside shystie on medasyn's 'the battle'

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Thursday, 20 May 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i really was expecting this thread to take off.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh don't worry, Tim Finney will post to it when he wakes up.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the feline mix?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It is a mix of grimey stuff over which Lady S unleashes her ridiculous flow. Search slsk. Search nordicskilla.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

can we call her L.sov.?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard any of her recorded material though Adam! But yeah all the on-air performances I've heard have been great.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 21 May 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskilla isn't sharing...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 21 May 2004 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i share a L.Sov folder [boomnoise!zoo]

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure you can call her "S.O.V" as that is what she sings on the 12" promos we got sent. She is excellent, and we are hoping to arrange a gig for her soon (which will probably be a disaster up here, but what the fuck, we love her).

___ (___), Friday, 21 May 2004 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I alone in wishing that the forthcoming Lady Sovereign album had been called Haunted Weather: Resonant Spaces, Silence and Memory?

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 21 May 2004 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaah - is that a pot shot at my illfated david toop thread perhaps!

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

unfortunately the title Hott Butt Action has already been used for Rachel Goswell's first solo outing.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 21 May 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

let's keep it on track. strictly S.O.V.! so what't the tracklisting for these 12''s ___?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

what can u buy by her so far? anything?

when's the single out?

piscesboy, Friday, 21 May 2004 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The 12" is a white label, solely stamped with her name on it. I might have the actual track name somewhere in the pack it came in - quite frankly, I didn't check. It is excellent though, and it definitely isn't "blah blah blah", which is proposed as her first single proper, I believe.

___ (___), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

as i understand it the first single is going to be 'Chi Ching! (Cheque 1, 2)' released on ross allen's casual label. probably mid to late june.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

May be what we have - I can only remember the main lyrical grabs of it off hand, and any one of them could be the title of the track, really.

___ (___), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

any chance you could rip the 12 for us slsks is there ___? i have to ask ;)

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

now there's a thought myke.

piscesboy, Friday, 21 May 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll see what I can do. Pretty sure I go by the same name there (tripleunderscore) so hunt me down.

___ (___), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

wow and please. please and wow.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskilla isn't sharing...

I'm not?

My slsk keeps screwing up in that respect (cue angry messages from all my buddies who think I'm not sharing), but everything should be available! :(

btw, the file I have is mispelt as :Lady Soverign" or something. Search "feline".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I can absolutely confirm that the track I have isn't on the feline mix. Cos I have that too, and a sticky compendium, and stuff. innit.

*smug*

___ (___), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

what's that sticky thing?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, just about every sticky track I could find, ever. And some ridiculous size Ice Rink (about 15 mins).

I went a bit grime for a while!

___ (___), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone else love her "left right, left right" lyric on the "Fit But..." remix?

the only thing between her and overground fame now is a certain tricky legal situation that's brewing. i do hope it doesnt scupper her inertia.

martin (martin), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i love that and all the little melodic couplets on the feline mix esp the white as snow bit.

can you tell us anymore of this tricky legal situation? at least its ilk? is the world of S.O.V. really that complex?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i might leave it at that for now. but take it as read that her inertia may be interrupted. shame...

martin (martin), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

that is ashame. (asumming you actually mean the opposite from what you have written) hopefully we won't have to start a 'Lady Sovereign Is Innocent' campaign! i'm really curious to what these problems may be but hopefully they won't make her more inert.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

although my understanding of physics is limited.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

21st June is the single's release date. Official.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i've heard rumblings abt this. are you going to be at lmhr, martin?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"inertia: the property of a body by which it remains at rest or continues moving in a straight line unless acted on by a directional force"

can't reach lmhr . grrr.

martin (martin), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

God yes that "left right, left right" part is insanely good, I've just replayed it about ten times.

there's loads of aggro amongst the grime lot on the <1Xtra reported it was worth £3million ( a joke in this climate, most people's mutiple album deals are worth £100,000 max).

now the grime lot, who didnt see her prove herself in the raves, are livid. i'd post the link from the <

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I would fuck her up the arse so bad. Like, until she was screaming for relief in her best chav scum voice. it would be like doing a 14 year old bunking off school.

JayJay, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

does she have an album coming out or anything? I love both the tracks I've heard.

i'm confused now. if that's Lady Sovereign then who's the black girl MCing in that Streets remix video??

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

that's her - wasn't that shystie in the streets video?

stelfox, Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

it was Lady Sovereign credited, weird.

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

or maybe she just wasn't black in the video. mad accent tho.

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't even begin to say how much i absolutely ADORE lady sovereign. think the first thing i found was her jentina diss - which is absolutely classique even when you haven't heard the original tune. blah blah blah is great but not as classique as ch-ching. it's funny, those three tunes are all about positioning herself.

she's white. she's tiny. she's CLASSIQUE.

she can be found on the ukmusic.com message board. i don't understand half of what those people on there are saying. l33t speak ain't my thing.

you can hear a ch-ching remix on her site. click on the revolving diamond.

she's supporting D12 on their english tour.

the streets remix has her mc-ing on it.

gawd, i absolutely adore her (as you can see).

Are her jeans on backwards?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Random, maybe it's a little slight, but fun. What's she saying in the second line of the chorus? Also, I thought the last line was "yes, you sir, in random" (which I thought was brilliant) but it seems to actually be "just do sumtin random".

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i like it too, i think she's prone to the odd sparse moment vocally tho, i'd like her to pack it in more

she's got a such a cute face in the video, but she really does look about 12

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone know the names of the different remixes of "Random"? I got a download of one version that's sort of slowed down a bit. Starts with the drum track, then the synth squiggle repeated, then the lyrics come in. It's rather sparse, but very cool.
Fluxblog posted a faster version last week, but I'm curious about who did this one.

Bent Over at the Arclight (Ben Boyer), Monday, 21 February 2005 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

where do they play the video, stevem? is it online?

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw it on MTV Base. but i'm sure it's on her website.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i like her, she seems a bit gimmicky though. like MIA.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

No, not last time I checked. I think I check it more than she does. heh. :-( (By the way, you were in my dream! You, not Lady S. Really weird.)

Simon R did an article on MIA for the Village Voice. I agree with most of what he said, but in the end I don't give a tosser if she (and Lady S ) are *real* or not.

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

who cares about realness, MIA is still about as good an MC as Ya Kid K or turbo b. ditto for lady sov, she just has a few quirky and catchy lines and choruses to offset it.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

ahaha, that's nice stevie, what was i doing there? ilxers are always popping up in mine, usually with no actual reason or purpose...that's how i know it's a dream.

were Ya Kid K and Turbo B not good MCs then?

Sven Bastard (blueski), Monday, 21 February 2005 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

wish there was an 8 Mile: Europe...

Sven Bastard (blueski), Monday, 21 February 2005 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, i'm not entirely sure, i think you just gatecrashed my dream. the only thing i remember: you were extremely friendly. :-)

Ya Kid K was great.

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Monday, 21 February 2005 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah surely the only even vaguely legitimate 'criticism' that can be made of Ya Kid K is that she wasn't 'real', so if you don't care about realness then why be hating on Mia and Ya Kid K, who only want to entertain us!

Sven Bastard (blueski), Monday, 21 February 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea where the version I posted came from - about two weeks ago, I had "sovereign random" on my slsk wishlist, and that's the first thing I got. I didn't hear the official single mixes until a week later.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 21 February 2005 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"were Ya Kid K and Turbo B not good MCs then?"

dont be silly, they were the best MCs ever. neither roxanne shante or rakim could respectively hold a candle to ya kid k or turbo b, they were the greatest rappers ever to grace hip hop.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 21 February 2005 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't like her music much i just want to fuck her.

critic, Monday, 21 February 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanna bet that "Random" is the song that will make Miccio like grime! That whole "churr I mean chair" section is so up his alley!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 21 February 2005 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

lady sov is the greatest female MC ever to grace mankind.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 21 February 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

good MC, bad MC or average MC, she's very entertaining

Sven Bastard (blueski), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"Random" deserves to be No 1 forever. Seriously if between Sov and Kano we don't get a top 5 grime hit this year we never will.

also, fuck purism. and purists.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

typical me deserves to go top ten. kano was really good on popworld and zane lowe has been caning it so hopefully it will. lady sov might just go top ten as well, as shes got that gimmicky, novelty factor down really well which will endear her to the average record buyer. all she needs is daytime radio one airplay.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

what makes her gimmicky/novelty?

Sven Bastard (blueski), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

cos shes a blahbarian.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

there's an interesting question in that; 'is Lady Sovereign good for pop (it's clear she's interested in being pop ala Dizzee, Jentina diss exhibit #1) but bad for whatever underground scene she came out of? can you only ever be good for one but not both? see also Dizzee i suppose, some people would regard him as novelty/gimmicky too. But I think they are artists to take quite seriously - as much as ODB or anyone.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

dizzees got more than enough that says 'take me seriously' or rather, that demands we take him seriously even if he wanted us to do so or not. for every 'dream', there's an incredible, dark, underground b-side like 'trapped'.

sov on the other hand, seems to be all the way pop. i mean, the ch-ching remix, is something, if fleshed out a little more, i could imagine annie on 679 being given. nothing wrong with that of course, i love annie, but sov is still a pop artist. sort of like to grime, what say, someone like the fresh prince or young mc might have been to hip hop, but not nearly as 'skilled' in the 'technical MCing' department.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Has Titchy suddenly gotten over-zealously poptimist/sensible or is this an extended sarcasm tip?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 21 February 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

(haha, I missed Miccio's positive remark upthread!)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 21 February 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

hi tim, no sarcasm here (apart from the ya kid k and turbo b = rakim and roxanne shante comments up above)....

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 21 February 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

That was the part I meant!

JoB (JoB), Monday, 21 February 2005 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

last Thursday she did did an in-store set at Phonica - hella fun. you know how she looks like 12 in all photos? She looks EVEN YOUNGER than that in real life. she did a new song called "Adidas Hoodie" which was brilliant!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 27 February 2005 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Like I mentioned on the Grime in 2005 thread, Miss Sovereign is going to be on Inside Out as part of a feature on the 'life of Grime' on BBC1 either tomorrow or next Monday at 7:30PM.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 27 February 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

(haha, I missed Miccio's positive remark upthread!)

Miccio doesn't hate grime! Wiley's album is one of my top 20 of last year! I just don't feel Dizzee much.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 27 February 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the menta remix of random (feat. riko) is evil and GREAT.

jermaine (jnoble), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

S/FJ has the Lady Sovereign album Straight Up Cheeky in the top ten of his best-of-2005 list already.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I know I started this thread but...TERRIBLE title for a record.

Honorary Banana Slug (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I like it (but I don't like "Random" that much unfortunately.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i like random until the chorus.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The Menta remix is definitely a vast improvement btw (even though Riko's verse is actually kind of distracting--AND I love Riko haha.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It's phoned in from prison!

but maybe y'all knew that!

Honorary Banana Slug (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It's nice to say that someone's contribution to a song is literally "phoned in"!

Honorary Banana Slug (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew that! It's funny cuz they literally make it SOUND like it is phoned in. I mean I've heard whole records that were recorded that way, but usually using spangly technology they manage to hide that fact. This song ACTUALLY seems to celebrate it (certainly the video does haha.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

alex can you gmail me that remix?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have it on mp3, but you can watch the video at the Lady Sovereign website!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I can send it to you s1ocki, when I get home.

Honorary Banana Slug (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

can you send it to me nordicskiller?

she shd have called her album 'blahbarian'.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

yes

Honorary Banana Slug (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the cover of "Random" is ace:

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

And me and me!

Also that cover is good.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

she cd have called it 'doukutsu monogatari'!

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

She should have called it "Logan Sama" haha

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I have the biggest crush on lady sovereign.

(returning the wince favour, zem!)

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't realize that this track was so hard to find (?). I'll get to it as soon as I get home.

Honorary Banana Slug (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It probably isn't. SLSK is just such a disaster these days I rely on well-wishers to send me stuff.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I am a 'mac user'.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

So am I!

Honorary Banana Slug (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

m'accuse.

Honorary Banana Slug (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

is this remix hard to find? isn't it going to be on the single? just in case can you send it to me too please? thanks!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

It's on the single.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

oh ok. I intend to buy it properly on Monday because of the cover!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

could you add me to the list for gmailing it please?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

According to her website there is also a Jammer remix featuring EARS & KNUCKLES!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone mentioned the fact that in the new dizzee rascal video he marries cherie blair?

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Who is Cherie Blair? Is that Blair's daughter?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"Everybody gettin' random!" = worst catchphrase single ever

The Menta remix is damn good though

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 12 March 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The album title should have been "Make Way for the S-O-V" as that seems to be her catchphrase a la "Up 2 di time."

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 12 March 2005 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

gmail list adding plea from me too

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 12 March 2005 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh could I PLEASE have it as well? Please pretty please with cheeky cherry on top?

S/FJ has the Lady Sovereign album Straight Up Cheeky in the top ten of his best-of-2005 list already.

What???? It's already finished or he doesn't care what's gonna be on it? :-)

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Saturday, 12 March 2005 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I just forwarded it Nath.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 12 March 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
this of course ought to be on the other thread, but is the album gmailable or yousenditable from anyone yet? I CANNOT GET ENOUGH. and i'm getting a little tired of these really really really super low quality mp3s! pretty please with a cherry on top? or just good quality stuff... the only things i have that are decent are Cha Ching, Sad Arse Stripper, Random, and that really dope precise remix of Random...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I the only one who's unimpressed with the remix?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Which one?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Cuz if you are talking about the Menta one, that is crazy. The beat is a million times better.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I just need to not think of it as a remix. It feels like a totally different song to me.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

no, it's not the menta one...

it's the brucker and sinden one here:
http://boom.mcsleazybootlegs.com/lady_sovereign_-_random_(brucker_and_sinden_remix).mp3

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that even an "official" remix?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The one I have is whatever Adamrl unsolicitedly e-mailed me! It's labeled "Menta remix ft. Riko." Anyway, it's all slow and dubby.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, that's the good one (even if the Riko verse is initially kind of offputting.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like to add for the record that Lady Sovereign is indeed fantastic!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I still find the original of "Random" pretty weak frankly, but otherwise she's pretty great.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It's out on vinyl on the Casual label - I bought mine at Amoeba- if you are into owning real world physical material tactile objects and not these mysterious digital files which you young people seem to enjoy nowadays . . .

and the vinyl label doesn't mention this, but it's pressed with an acapella so you can mash away, synch her up to something, er, random etc.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

As an American, I have to say I really like Straight Up Cheeky as an album title.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know, i don't think so... but it's the best thing i've heard in a while!

and i love the original Random too. That menta remix is pretty good too... but it is a totally different song. I love how frenetic and carnivale the others are though

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I like whichever mix I've heard so much (I think it's the original).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

What section did you find that in Drew?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure that the album can't be out in any form yet and that SFJ has just gone temporarily nuts - Medasyn said at the Phonica appearance a fortnight ago that it wasn't even finished yet.

re: 'Random' remixes - both mentioned in the last few posts are official and on the UK CD single. The original on that is different to the mp3 which was floating around though - busier, bit more bass, no swearing, definitely not as good; hopefully it's just a radio version and the mp3 one will show up on the album.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, the Brucken and Sinden remix is on the single?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i would happily buy so much of this stuff if i could find it online or in stores... i'm getting a little annoyed buying stuff online which means weekly trips up to amoeba in hollywood and there's a ton i can't find.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I wouldn't even know which section to start in!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

this after all is why i've been looking for 'paris hilton' since november!

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

though i'm tempted to not even reveal this... they do have the 'random' 12" at Amoeba... when i was there on saturday trying to pick it up they were looking for it for me and it just hadn't been unloaded from storage yet... they had... gulp... 3 copies.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Lady Sovereign products in HMV.co.uk

...and in Amazon.co.uk

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes yes, but what section at Amoeba did Drew find the single in? That's what I want to know!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't forget the FELINE MIX, people.

(okay it's not that great and is just LS barking over sinogrime, but one for the completists)

Poundstretcher (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you heard the Jammer and Ears remix, Adam?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

not yet

Poundstretcher (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

where the fuck do they file grime at all in amoeba? electronica? hip hop?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Run the Road was on the new hip hop end cap.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but Wiley vinyl was scattered in the shrinking 2-step section!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

GRIME IS EVERYTHING AND NOTHING.

Spencer and Alex should open a specialty store called Windex.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 March 2005 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't even know they had a 2-step section : (

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 31 March 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

San Francisco does. Actually it used be really big. Now it's almost gone. It's kind of sad.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The Feline Mix was that thing up on Boom Selection a while back, right? I hadn't heard of Sov yet and stupidly passed up on it...does anyone have a copy of the Feline Mix and/or "Sad Ass Strippah" that they could Gmail?

Telephonething, Thursday, 31 March 2005 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry Jaymc, I'll only send you SOLICITED MP3s in future! ;)

Feline Mix

Poundstretcher (nordicskilla), Thursday, 31 March 2005 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

No, keep sending them, I love it!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:45 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently she's been performing a new track, i think the title is adidas hoodie.

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Cripes, she's GOOD! I've had a few other tracks, but I didn't even get round to gettin' 'Random' till last night and it's molten.

BARMS, Thursday, 31 March 2005 07:20 (twenty-one years ago)

she is really wearying.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 31 March 2005 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had enough already.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 31 March 2005 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

curious

Sven Basted (blueski), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

the beats for random were sluggish and boring. she could be good, but shes gimmicky. it just depends on if you like gimmicks or not.

blahbarian, Thursday, 31 March 2005 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

she is really wearying

i could say the same about MIA but really it's the hype that's wearying. after all neither of them have had any real exposure beyond blogospheric fawning, couple of broadsheet supplement column inches and maybe a little interview in DJ.

the beats for random were sluggish and boring

it's CALLED hip-hop...

Sven Basted (blueski), Thursday, 31 March 2005 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

hip hop beats dont have to be boring - these were boring though, like regulation hip hop beats made by dance producers or something. shes an overrated MC. full of crossover potential though, as shes exactly what could appeal to the masses.

blahbarian, Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the weird stringy/pipe sound under the chorus

as shes exactly what could appeal to the masses

apparently not, based on chart performance thus far

did people claim Miss Dynamite was an over-rated MC when she started singing and making hits?

Sven Basted (blueski), Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

after all neither of them have had any real exposure beyond blogospheric fawning

Because those blogs are written by machines, rather than ordinary (if not yet numerous) members of "the masses" who've heard and like the music?

Flyboy (Flyboy), Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

no but their influence is not enough to prove a significant factor in commercial success. so for however much Lady Sov or MIA or others are praised or dismissed here or on blogs, it won't really affect their sales OR stature will it? but then i guess that's not necessarily so important now.

Sven Basted (blueski), Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

also re 'Random's beat, it's pretty traditional/coventional hip-hop (reminds me of Public Enemy's 'Incident At 66.6FM' in particular) but i'm not sure what would've suited it better. still there are the remixes for rhythmic variation.

Sven Basted (blueski), Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"as shes exactly what could appeal to the masses

apparently not, based on chart performance thus far"

wait til they release her first single proper - this was just a soft release, to show shes starting off 'underground' etc.

blahbarian, Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

after all neither of them have had any real exposure beyond blogospheric fawning

Time to read some magazines/newspapers then. The first time I ever heard about MIA and Lady Sov was not in the blogosphere, but in a magazine.

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

that sentence DID continue you know...

Sven Basted (blueski), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard Lady Sovereign for the first time two days ago. I am in love with her.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Adidas Hoddie is pretty lame. More fierceness please!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

hold on she's only 5'1

Sven Basted (blueski), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Not enough love for Sssh on this thread.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not a massive fan of the music, but i'd love to fuck her in the arse. it would be like fucking a little girl but legal.

ilm, Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

shes crap, lets face it. most people only like her cos shes a novelty, small, white, cute, and mouthy, and has nice catchphrases. she's rub though!

id still shag her though.

blahbarian, Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

after all neither of them have had any real exposure beyond blogospheric fawning, couple of broadsheet supplement column inches and maybe a little interview in DJ

first i heard of sov was on... bbc radio6, andrew collins, in january. well grimey, they said.

blah -- "people only like her cos she's white"?? are you sure?

N_RQ, Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I had no idea she was white until blahbarian said so.

Also blahbarian, shut the fuck up you useless tool.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

most men on ilm like her because they want to fuck her and pretend they are fucking a little girl without any of those thorny paedophilic issues. the same way they want to fuck mia and act like it's some sort of race rape thing.

ilm, Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this going to turn into MIA thread redux now then? sigh.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not sure if she is white, as it goes. ie blahbarian is wanking up the wrong tree.

'ilm' is a twot.

N_RQ, Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus Christ.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

n_rq, don't be so dense mate.

ilm, Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

oh to have ILM moderator powers (but then i guess i'd never get ANY work done)

Sven Basted (blueski), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

sven basted, don't be so dense mate.

ilm, Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

funny how it all works.. m.i.a. is blasted for being brown and privileged (culturally/educationally-speaking), while sov gets it for being white and pikey.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

no, we just don't like the music.

ilm, Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

if you don't like the music, STFU with your lurid, racist filth, fuckface.

N_RQ, Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

where was a i lurid or racist?

ilm, Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, come off it. i don't care for m.i.a., either, but people on various threads have been bringing up her st.martins background and indie celeb connections as some kind of shameful albatross.

xxpost

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(stupid abuse & personal threat deleted)

in response to lauren, most people on ILM and dissensus think MIA isnt 'authentic' because she went to art school. cos you know, if non white artists get educated, theyre false and fake. they should all be poor, uneducated, and have no idea about what theyre doing, cos yknow, theyre so primal, primitive, 'natural' and 'real'.

blahbarian, Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

um.. that was my point, blahbarian. that kind of thinking is shameful, and the flipside is people thinking it's perfectly fine to use "pikey" as legitimate critcism of sov.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

my point exactly, lauren.

everyone from simon reynolds to woebot and these other self made critical bastions have been spouting this disgusting blather.

blahbarian, Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

everyone from simon reynolds to woebot

WOAH broad spectrum

Poundstretcher (nordicskilla), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Right, I only like Lady Sov because I want to fuck her ... and that'd be based on what? The two photos I've seen of her online?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

that sentence DID continue you know...

Yeah sorry, didn't notice as I only first noticed the quote (and then after checking back...). So yeah sorry.

Anyway, I pass the mike back to ILM and Mr Blah...

in response to lauren, most people on ILM and dissensus think MIA isnt 'authentic' because she went to art school. cos you know, if non white artists get educated, theyre false and fake. they should all be poor, uneducated, and have no idea about what theyre doing, cos yknow, theyre so primal, primitive, 'natural' and 'real'.

Her colour has nothing to do with the fact some find her inauthentic. If you read Simon R's words more closely, it's not that he thinks it's wrong to use her background but the way she developed her ideas. But I do agree that it's silly to find her inauthentic, only I don't think that's linked to her *colour*.

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yep. the ones you've masturbated over at least twice a day and once before bedtime.

ilm, Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you for giving me ammo for the moderators, blahbarian!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, I just wanted to know what section to look for her in Amoeba.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Amoeba have a KIDDIE PORN section?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I just think it's funny because Lady Sovereign has no image at all in the U.S., so most of what I know about her is through various mp3s that people have e-mailed me. It's only really been recently that I've started to investigate her backstory.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's between GHETTO INDIE FANTASIES and ART SCHOOL FAKERZZZZ

xp

Poundstretcher (nordicskilla), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

im sorry, but what model of authenticity is reynolds ascribing to? the one where nice middle class boys go to university then return back to the home counties and form supposedly outlaw rock bands? whats wrong with how she developed her ideas? has he spoken to her? MIA is from sri lanka, her family moved to an estate in south london, like many asian kids in britain, she grew up with what westerners like to call 'world music' and hip hop and R&B. what sort of music does he expect her to make? do any of these critics move away from their PCs to move amongst real people in the cities they live in? by reynolds criteria, where if you have a higher education, or arent from the sticks, or suddenly decide you want to work with musics from around the world, youre a faker. this would likely make olu dara a faker too. probably chuck d too.

besides all the rhetoric about her background though, there is nothing inauthentic about MIAs actual music. it feels entirely 'one' despite all the different elements being strung together.

you know whats funny, the last MIA post on dissensus, just as it moved into racial toppics, they shut it down. its like they were scared to talk about it. reynolds was arguing that race had nothing to do with it, paying on attention to the fact that the fact she is of an ethnic background might make her relation to the musics she works with different then if she was white. which is simply ridiculous.

blahbarian, Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Thank you for giving me ammo for the moderators, blahbarian!"

how sad your life must be, dan. running to the moderators like a petulant child because someone responded after you insulted them unprovoked. bravo sir!

blahbarian, Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Abusive post threatening physical violence on me

ilm, Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG. i live in London, Dan I presume lives in the US, how exactly am I going to do anything to him? Oh well....

blahbarian, Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, Dan isn't actually scared of you, blah, but since you're being a prick, the threat allows there to be some justification for banning you.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

DING DING DING DING DING

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i would gladly act upon Dan's request if i could.

i am glad i never really got involved in these race/class matters re MIA and Lady Sov. i find it very odd that they're considered issues at all. i like them both because they're quirky 'altpop' (being cute supposedly part of why they are where they are only it doesn't seem to be really helping that much as they attract as many jibes as praise for it, and they're not selling well either way) with good beats or interesting things going on rhythmically/musically and that's really all there is to it. would've been nice to see 'Random' and 'Galang' go Top 40 but couldn't care less how well they do overseas really.

Sven Basted (blueski), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - um, let the record show that dan insulted me first. now you two go and play with each others testicles like the nice mutual cock buffing boys that you are. hope you both shined your ILM Old Boys Club badges today!

blahbarian, Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

er yeah, but dan insulted blah first. can he dish it out but not take it?

xpost

ilm, Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

gasp, so blahbarian is not only racist but he hates the gays too! oh, there is no emoticon to express my outrage.

Sven Basted (blueski), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't Calum have a film festival to run?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i've been keeping this bottled up for so long. here goes.. neither lady sov nor m.i.a. are actually very goodlooking in person.

i just couldn't keep that in any longer. so, all you paedo-colonials, you're out of luck.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

um, where did i appear to hate gays? i merely insinuated that jaymc and dan should go and play with each others genitals. i never inferred that was a bad thing. merely that its quite likely one of their frequent favourite pasttimes and that they should feel no shame in indulging their love for each others scrotums. perhaps steve, you are feeling unwanted as no one wants to fondle your ball bag?

lauren, OTM!

blahbarian, Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

lauren you're such a harsh critic. i mean, the paedo-colonials are no oil-paintings themselves...

Sven Basted (blueski), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm tough yet fair, which you should know by this point.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

lauren is the most kissable person in this thread. shame its only dan and jaymc and stevem locked into a tongue triangle.

blahbarian, Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I KNEW this thread would turn into this! Which is why I went out to buy milk.

it's not as bad as the MIA thread because blahbarian's just trolling as opposed to being genuinely fucking offensively dense like the Reynolds/Woebot, er, spectrum.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

can your milk make this thread into a heart?

Sven Basted (blueski), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe if I turn it into strawberry milkshake.

but oh no, the milk is white. oh no. I hope it is not pikey.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

to address the thread topic, however belatedly: yes, i do think she's fantastic.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - i'm sure your milk is well pikey, alex.

Sven Basted (blueski), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

it surely could never have been calum in the first place? he would've posted a 'ts: sleeper vs lady sovereign' thread instead.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The best thing about Sov is the little sound effects she sticks in all over the place, like the cat miaow and the sobbing noise and the sound of Baby Jentina falling into a ditch. I hope there are lots of these on the album.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

jed_ (jed), Friday, 1 April 2005 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

That wasn't worth much. EVERY female MC who doesn't push their tits out catches the L-Word rumour. Tiresome prejudice.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 1 April 2005 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

probably true! i just added the (allegedly) as a reference to a UK TV programme. My post isn't based too much on rumour, in fact (but thanks for rating it).

Lex you are on the pipe if you think the Reynolds/Woebot anti-MIA stuff is more offensive than blah claiming that liking her is part of a race-rape fantasy?!?! You *still* haven't taken on board the criticism of radical chic. Move on!

N_RQ, Friday, 1 April 2005 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Move off, more like. I'm tired of even seeing the woman's name and you guys had to bring it here, you exasperating bibble boobs.

brilliant, brilliant interview with Sov by Miss AMP. addresses the chav thing and the wigga thing, laughs in their faces.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 1 April 2005 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, nice, but what's up with "In fact the whole concept of artificial, overly-showy femininity, as showcased by most of the chicks in today's pop world..." "artificial"??? leave my girls aloud alone.

N_RQ, Friday, 1 April 2005 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Amp's mapping a value judgment on to that description (going from her tastes and her other writing, she's almost certainly not)! just saying that Sov's image is kind of the antithesis of it.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 1 April 2005 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like Cozen to try. I think I understand, perhaps.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 1 April 2005 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Wot no album? It's coming out on Island, isn't it? Her site doesn't seem to say anything about it, nor can I find much elsewhere. Does anyone know when (Mar05 haha)? Does anyone have an advance they need to talk about OUT LOUD (note: I'm not asking for people to leak it, just talk about it). By now I'm 3/4 convinced it will be crap but I'd SO DEARLY love to be wrong.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I just made it for fun one night in an hour's time, I didn't even cut the sequences, just made a bunch of new beats and a new bassline and clicked them on and off as loops on the fly in a "live" mode after synching up her acapella- so it's really sloppy. It's just so that I have something fun to DJ with that is special. But it's not good enough to officially release even as a bootleg/white label. I wouldn't want her to hear it. It might wind up online somehow, if I decide to tart it up a bit more

The Good Dr Bill said "Disappointing to say the least" . . .

jermaine (jnoble), Thursday, 14 April 2005 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw her last night in Manchester at some MTV new-band gig thing. She was superb. Gibbering quicker than Twista, bouncing about, giving anyone and everyone abuse. Only 4 songs but each one was classic. Hopefully, with MTV backing she should get huge. Physically, she's tiny, way under 5ft, but the most intimidating performer I've seen in ages.

jermaine (jnoble), Thursday, 14 April 2005 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

turns out "broom" and "tango" (and 2 remixes of "blah blah", including one by rollie cadenceweapon that was on fluxblog recently) are part of an ep called "bitchin", which is more or less the audio equivalent of What kind of things did bully girls yell at the less athletic girls in the locker room back in high school, anyway?

jermaine (jnoble), Sunday, 24 April 2005 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Today's OMM article about So Solid Crew reveals that Lady Sov met her DJ on a SSC message forum, aww (and she's a teeny bit embarrassed about it!). It just makes me like her more.

From LS' mailing list:

The next single 9 to 5 is doing really well, heard it on Radio One, Kiss and Choice this week, and the video is being played everywhere. It's coming out on August 8th, and there's loads of good things on it..... there's the remixes, the videos the cover of 9 to 5 that The Ordinary Boys did and also something new called U-Myx. Check out my website as next week there'll be a new game on there, it's going to be a bit different. The albums pretty much finished, Basement Jaxx have one more track to do and than it's done, it's sounding really good even if i do say so myself!!

jcartledge (jcartledge), Thursday, 14 July 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

She was ill at the NYC show, and not in that licensed-to way. She kept threatening to vomit on the front row (which would have made good on her Sex Pistols T-shirt). But she was pretty adorable anyway. She's got stage presence to burn, even when she's just trying to not throw up. I like her. That was the first time I'd heard "9 to 5," it was great.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 14 July 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, she sounded great, but betwixt the ill behaviour and the slipped disc the girl needed an overhaul. I love her to death but when it's your NY premiere ends with you asking the audience if they have any questions and then leaving as if to puke, it's difficult to call it triumphant. A real sweetie and if there had BEEN merch to buy, it woulda been snapped up AND I'm sure that there will be plenty of press about her "soldiering on through difficulties to win over the crowd" BUT the fact of the matter is that I would've liked a better show, with a non-sick girl and working audio.
And about two hundred less people; fuck seeing shows where I want to dance and I can't fucking move!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 14 July 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

I thought the show was great and that the exit was perfect! Why give a shit about "NY premiere" copy? OTM about space issues, though.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Thursday, 14 July 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

Don't get me wrong, her rappin' was hawt and there's something very endearing about a young woman acting like a young woman rather than some sort of crafted megastar, but she was off and the tech issues sucked.

I had a good time; I just wish i had caught her on a good day.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 14 July 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it was frustrating because you could tell how great she can probably be, but we didn't get to actually see it. And also otm about lack of merch. I wanted something to buy. (and wtf with the CD player? I couldn't tell if that was a DJ problem or a house problem) But I had a good time anyway. I'm sure she'll be back.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 14 July 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

"Basement Jaxx have one more track to do and than it's done" are the sweetest, sweetest words you'll ever hear.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 14 July 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

Her DJ told me after the Chicago show that it will be finished next month. 9 to 5 was great live, but "tango" really did it for me that night. I'm so excited for the full album!

temeraire (r h), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it was frustrating because you could tell how great she can probably be, but we didn't get to actually see it.

My feelings on the show *exactly*. the 6th time the CD skipped and a song was aborted, it was really, really hard for me to not make for the exit. she has charisma and clearly has the songs, but last night was a tough show to get through.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

whatever the last full song she did last night was, the one that kind of unexpectedly went into double-time - that was HOT SHIT. pity about her illness and the shitty knitting factory decks though. and yikes, that crowd...

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 14 July 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, all the new material that I didn't know was BLAZIN', that 9 to 5 song with the OI OI OI chant was FIAH!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

I think he means because she was sick and the equipment was breaking, not because of the shitty space at KF.

I thought I saw you there, Tracer, but I guess not!

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea what you people look like, but at the Knitting Factory the chances of seeing ANYONE during the show is remote at best.
I got a great view of this one guy's shoulder though. FOR THREE HOURS.

The record drops in October, according to her management.

So true. But yeah, what Colin said. I'm used to the KF sardine-box experience, it's just that she wasn't on form. And, like I said, she was still pretty adorable.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 14 July 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

surprised no one who went to the NYC show mentioned the oddness of lady sov doing her jentina diss over the beat from "hollaback girl" yet! (she stopped after the first chorus, saying "i'm not wasting my breath on this shit" or something to that effect)

joseph (joseph), Friday, 15 July 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I wondered if that was because of a cease-and-desist letter from Jentina or something.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 15 July 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

She also half sang the "Hollaback Girl" hook, which was great.

she's posted on a least one messageboard (ukmusic, I think) (you can also see the origins of the Jentina diss) that she's bi and it didn't read as a get drunk and make out with her best friend type of thing

multi, Friday, 15 July 2005 07:15 (twenty years ago)

Here's 9-5.

The beat shuffles more than your average Em beat, but there's definitely plenty of Em in there. Eminem makes sense as an influence for her, for lots of reasons. We'll be hearing a lot of Eminem echoes in the next few years. (Although it's interesting that two of the most pronounced ones I can think of -- Sov and Nellie McKay -- are women. There's a dissertation brewing for someone.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 17 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone seen the video to "9-5"? Besides the actual song, it's totally Feminem - the colours, the dressing up as different characters, etc. I suppose Eminem is a good place to start and there's lots of similarities stylistically, but it's a shame that this had to be her first song with the most potential to be a hit, cause I think she's better than simply a female version of him.

Roz (Roz), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

I think that song has as much Madness in it as Eminem.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 25 July 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

i don't like 9-5

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 25 July 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

I do. But I like both Madness and Eminem, so adding Lady Sov to it is butterscotch on the sundae.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 25 July 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

I hear the Madness too, especially after hearing the Ordinary Boys mix - I'm just saying that the video is totally marketing her as a female Eminem, which I'm not sure is the right way to go.

Roz (Roz), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

the UBER-KIDPOPness of the video is annoyingly at odds with the "don't wanna see me presenting C-Beebies" stuff in the lyrics. if you're going to have this pop a video, for this pop a song, then there's hardly anything to be gained by making some kind of Clash-stylee stand against doing Saturday morning telly or whatever.

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

Except (I've not seen the video) the Eminem thing to do is have the video undercut the song at every opportunity.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

"9-5" - finally a really good song from her.

She really is. I liked "9-5", and now I really LOVE "Hoodie".

rumour of the week from a friend of a source in the know:

Sov's recording a track for US - Pharrel Williams done the beat, Jay-Z on the first and second verses and they want Sov on the third verse!

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

I doubt it. It's not really his thing. I'm less excited now that I've realized it's a Live 105 party though (whatever the hell that is.)

Seriously, where is the chat about 'Hoodie'? WTH, people? Basement Jaxx drawing on 80s cartoon and pinball game incidental music and sonics (though the chorus backing does fail to explode to life - it just sort of starts) while Sov is at her charmingest, filliest and silliest - ain't it doing nuffink for ya?

BARMS, Monday, 21 November 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

HIM! WHO? WHAT? HER! EVERBODY! HER?

Paul (scifisoul), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

YSI? I presumed it was going to be on Vertically Challenged but no.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

It's supposed to be out today!

BARMS, Monday, 21 November 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

The single is out today? I should read my Lady Sovereign fan club emails more carefully.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

i do like hoodie, and they're a natural pairing and i think they work better together than dizzee/jaxx did... but the chorus is kind of annoying... maybe pushing that schoolyard thing too far. i only have a low-grade version tho, would def like to hear in better sound.

bugged out, Monday, 21 November 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Is Vertically Challenged worth getting?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

Uh yeah it's good, but most of the best stuff you probably have so it's not exactly ESSENTIAL or anything. The DVD is very cute.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Ooohhhhh, nice. TS: 'Lucky Star' vs. 'Hoodie'

Hoodie remix:

It really is pretty great, will probably make my years-end best-of CD.

we like short shorts!

Paul (scifisoul), Monday, 21 November 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Important Note:
The "Basement Jaxx radio mix" is BY FAR SUPERIOR to the longer "Basement Jaxx remix" because it includes a sonar ping sound which is inexplicably absent from the longer vers. Seems like a small thing, but listen to both and understand.

the ghost of olde ilm, Monday, 21 November 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

I don't really like this. :(

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 21 November 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

The 12" is definitely worth purchasing. Gotta apologise to Mdasyn, who actually produced 'Hoodie' with the Jaxx and lays some of the instruments, including the synth.

Guys, 'Hoodie' is pretty much 1984-5 Prince doing grime, at least during the verses (taking the Princeness all the way through the chorus might have lifted the song a little higher in its danceyness).

Who the hell do you THINK I am? I'm the goddamn Batman! (Barima), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

Absolutely love her. I don't follow grime closely enough to know how Lady Sovereign compares to anyone besides the Streets or Dizzee Rascal, but she is the best of those three, I reckon. I picked up the single of "9 to 5" yesterday, which sounds not dissimilar to early Madness, particularly the Ordinary Boys remix. "Hoodie" is in a league of its own, though, and I could imagine an alternate universe where this track broke through in the U.S. if Jay-Z really did get behind it.

John Hunter, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 06:28 (twenty years ago)

Looking at the midweek chart position, I wouldn't be surprised if Miss S actually got dropped before she gets to release her album...

C-listed, I think? Maybe B.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

'Hoodie' is pretty much 1984-5 Prince doing grime

ie, it's produced by Basement Jaxx

"bona fide ILMers" don't like plenty of great hip-hop.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

bugged out, although they guy's review may not be particularly well-written, he's plenty qualified to have a negative view of lady sov's music.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

"qualified"

bugged out, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm going with the idea that anyone is qualified, regardless of whether or not missy elliott's second sophomore album is the sun around which their taste in hip-hop orbits.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

you're being defensive.

my point is simply that, given that Missy Elliott has traditionally been given short shrift by those who consider themselves real hip-hop heads, it's unlikely that Lady Sov, who could be considered to have a similarly angular relationship to traditional hip-hop as Missy Elliott, will be any better received by them. I make no claims regarding the veracity of such opinions.

bugged out, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

fair enough.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but Missy ultimately sells CDs, so get a Missy cameo on a Sov track and Sov'll be good to go Stateside. Maybe.

It's bloody brilliant - it's been in-car entertainment for about a month. The kids love it too (that's my children - not 'The Kids' - I have no idea what they think about it) what with the tongue-twisters. It's just brill. Esp. the last minute or so.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Sunday, 12 March 2006 11:04 (twenty years ago)

geeky trendoid, Sunday, 12 March 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm beginning to think Lady Sov is less and less fantastic with every release. Public Warning brings out the Gareth in me, I think - there's a big kitchen sink "Look at me! I'm eclectic!" feel to the track and there just doesn't NEED to be that much going on. And stop it with the ska already.

That rapid fire bit a few seconds in is wonderful but whenever she slows her flow down, especially over 4/4, I start to realise quite how much I dislike her voice. Go back to abraisive grime basslines okthxbye.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 12 March 2006 21:12 (twenty years ago)

crazy talk. i like her voice. and i'm glad to see she's on def jam, they might know what to do with her.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 19 March 2006 09:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm not a fan of 'Public Warning', but pretty much all of the previous stuff she's done before I is absolutely brilliant. I hope she keeps her delivery fast and her beats simple.

Not a lot of new tracks on there, unless those are remixes? When is it due out?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

Oct 31st - and yeah, it's pretty much a compilation.

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

The video is getting lots of play on MTV. Maybe she'll blow up afterall...

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

If you like the idea of Lady Sov getting popular beyond the blogosphere, then a hits compilation is precisely what her debut album should be.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

I was just commenting on the fact. The only thing that surprises me is that at least a couple of those tracks were on the Chocolate Industries EP which seems a tad redundant.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

Any possibility of her having recut some of these tunes, with new beats from the Jaxx? Whatever, I'll be buying it anyway...

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Thursday, 12 October 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

I'll probably buy it without high hopes. She's gotten progressively less interesting since I first heard her (on that Streets remix), and the Feminem songs are just awful.

milo z (mlp), Friday, 13 October 2006 00:40 (nineteen years ago)

Really good album

The new songs are good, and a few of the beats are different from the previously released versions

Definitely a bangin' party album though

but a hits compilation without her best song to date? (granted it was so long ago that grime was the Hot New Thing but still.) all of sov's recent singles have been pretty bad :(

what if you couldn't care less? honestly, if i like the idea of actually being interested in this album, a hits compilation is precisely what her debut album shouldn't be. so tired of these songs.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

well like anything else, whether the record sells or not doesn't change how it sounds. but given that i think lady sov is an interesting character, the idea of her on mtv i also find interesting.

i don't understand being "tired" of the songs, though. i can understand not liking them, but if you do like them, don't they sound as good on an album as on mp3 files from 3 years ago?

Heh. No, Stan. Rest assured that, if I'm on it, it ain't hipster at all. :-) I don't think you can get an account on f1l1p13 anymore. :-( And I never managed to get on OINK.

I was in a bar last Thursday and "Love Me Or Hate Me" came on.

Edward III (edward iii), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

i saw her last night at the bowery ballroom, and it was pretty great. she basically played through the whole album, adding Ch Ching and a sex pistols cover to the list. beware the opening band, they are one of the worst groups i've ever seen live.

jonathan - stl (jonathan - stl), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

OK this sounds totally contrarian-for-the-sake-of-it standard ILM style pro-pop anti-indie bullshit but I definitely like the new Fergie song better than the Sov one.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

The new Sov song is her weakest track if you ask me. Is the new Fergie song "London Bridge"? Cuz that's no good either.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

Nah its 'fergalicious' and its some weird frankenstein monster of an 80s bass-pop song thats like target marketed at xhuxk although i have no idea if he actually likes it.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

"Fergalicious" >>> "London Bridge"

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

Oh wait, I forgot "Love Me or Hate Me" -- it's in the middle.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

^^^Yeah I agree with that.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

She's the new Spacehog.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

OK this sounds totally contrarian-for-the-sake-of-it standard ILM style pro-pop anti-indie bullshit but I definitely like the new Fergie song better than the Sov one.

i'm kind of so-so on both of them, but then that's like the 2nd or 3rd weakest sov track. and i know what ilm-style bullshit you're referencing, but i'm not sure we can count sov as "indie" anymore.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

In the year 2000, when Lady Sov is inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame on VH-1 Classic, the previous post will be seen as incredibly prescient.

"Working on my fitness, he's my witness"

How is this worse than Fergie's "they treat me really nicely, they buy me all these ice-ys"?

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 06:46 (nineteen years ago)

Er, never mind, didn't realize you were already talking about Fergie, not LS. In which case those lyrics actually represent a step up.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 07:10 (nineteen years ago)

She's the new Spacehog.

Considering she's got more than one good song and actual fans, I'd say she's out in front of them at this point. Course, you've set the bar fairly low there.

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

Spacehog had a good song?

"In the Meantime" was decent faux-glam.

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

i wonder what everyone would be saying about this album if most of these songs hadn't been released in some form before the album was released. would pitchfork still have given it the 6.4 if it was the first time they had heard random or a little bit of shh?

jonathan - stl (jonathan - stl), Thursday, 2 November 2006 00:54 (nineteen years ago)

i don't think so.

would pitchfork still have given it the 6.4 if it was the first time they had heard random or a little bit of shh?

Definitely.

I.M. From Hollywood (i_m_from_hollywood), Thursday, 2 November 2006 05:07 (nineteen years ago)

i finally sat down and listened to it all the way through as an album, instead of as bits and pieces accumulated on hard drives over the last few years.

it's a great record. imaginative and funny, varied, catchy, chockablock with bright beats, good lines, good hooks and serious skills. the weaker tracks benefit from being album cuts rather than sub-grade singles, and the stronger tracks still sound as good as they ever have. redshirt rookie of the year.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 5 November 2006 02:46 (nineteen years ago)

well, we'd reviewed seven of the album's 13 tracks between Feb 2005-July 2006, and unless my math is off they averaged 3.14/5 stars (or 6.28/10).

LMoHM has been all over B96, the black pop station here in the twin cities. the last time i looked into it, it wasn't rating especially high in B96 web polls, and it hadn't made much of a mark on billboard either, so i sort of assumed it was living off a def jam push of some kind (without really knowing how that stuff works), but yes, it's been played at least in medium rotation.

geoff (gcannon), Monday, 6 November 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

I've heard "Love Me or Hate Me" a handful of times in Chicago. My friend Elizabeth reports hearing it "all the time" as she was driving from here to Michigan for a wedding last month, which means it's also getting played in, like, Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids. It's currently #47 in the US.

i've been getting promo emails about her new album, along with a 12-minute teaser mix. some sounds promising. but i actually liked public warning, so don't trust me. (there's a bit on the mix that borrows from "close to you," which i don't know if it's on the album or not but is a little o_0.)

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Monday, 9 February 2009 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Monday, 9 February 2009 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

sounds promising. but i actually liked public warning, so don't trust me

I've heard the new album, think it's spotty, but like it anyway. It's also short -- 10 songs -- which is a good thing. (Didn't notice anything sounding like "Close To You.") But yeah, I liked Public Warning too. People who hated that one will almost definitely hate the new one even more.

xhuxk, Monday, 9 February 2009 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

Is it more like "Public Warning" end of that album or the "My England" end?

xhuxk, Monday, 23 February 2009 06:28 (seventeen years ago)

"Close To Me" is a good idea (haven't heard the song) - worked excellently as the basis for a dancehall riddim about six years ago.

Me too. Wonder if my review will be the only one not to even mention "So Human" (which I thought was one of the duller tracks on the album, Cure sample or no.) Had no idea it was considered a "key cut" when I wrote that.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 02:33 (seventeen years ago)

My review doesn't mention "So Human" Chuck, though it's only 300 words so I didn't go into too many specifics. I think it's a stronger record than people are giving it credit for, though on the other hand all the people who are saying it's a massive letdown are correspondingly overrating the debut.
