Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're selling something you don't believe in, then you're a sell out, MAroon.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

As far as I know, the Beatles were only influenced by the guitar side of rock music.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

if you knew sumthin about rap you wouldn't be mocking.

hiphop+rap=two different thinges.

trevapina, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

that's what listening to slipknot does to little kids with little brains

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

highly impressionable youth

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Usually when someone pulls out "the difference between rap and hip-hop" I get the "four pillars of hip-hop speech," but for some reason I don't think that's what trevapina is on about. What qualifies as the non-rap part now? Instrumental hip-hop? Or does it have something to do with huge televisions and rims?

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

hiphop originated in africa and was very junglish in nature but rap originated in the streets

if u dont know, dont bother to ask

trevapina, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

do not feed the troll....

I won't respond to any criticisms of rap as a genre unless said criticism is written in the form of rhyming couplets.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

oh ok here is my rap song

ur a fukin numbnut fuk
i got 5 nines and i grab my nuts

*swoooooon*

Joseph Larkin (Joseph Larkin), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the non-rap side of hiphop is human beatboxing. Slipknot are big on Doug E Fresh and the Fat Boys.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

for some reason, the word "douchebag" keeps coming to mind.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

if u wanna learn about life, i suggest you listen to slipknots surfacing:

"fuck it all, fuck this world, fuck everything you stand for, don't give a shit don't belong"

yea there is cussing in it but isnt that powerful on a more cerebrle (sp?) level?

trevapina, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM'ers bring the barbs so clever
Could this be the best thread evah?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, that didn't rhyme.
Rhymes only, please.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Now looky. I'm certainly not the biggest fan of rap/hip hop (by a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNGGGGGG shot), but to categorically denounce it, only to trump up the merits of Slipknot???? Please. Slipknot couldn't be sillier and stupider and more juvenile and more contrived IF THEY TRIED! {

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

cerebral, sorry

slipknot is worth more than rap cuz its pure human emotion. u ever had a bad day and just wanted to say fuk u to society?

Well so has slipknot and thats what the song is about. its so simple yet so complex at the same time

trevapina, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It's easy to smile when your ship comes in
and you've got the stockmarket beat
But the man who's worthwhile
is the man who can smile
when his pants are too tight in the seat!

MC Ted Knight (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't kidding about the huge tvs, a couple guys from slipknot dropped in the range of $10K at a Best Buy my ex-roommate works at. Holla!

trevapina, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the thing about rap is it is too basic.

slipknot is more complex than any metal band out there, but rap? i can do that on my casio

trevapina, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

what was the question?

Do it. Post it.

JC-L (JC-L), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

what would that prove

trevapina, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Slipknot make music for fifteen year old boys with bad complexions and stunted imaginations from too many hours infront of their playstations playing "Doom". It's bad, corporate Columbine Rock. Take a potshot at Hip Hop? Sure, you have my blessing, but co me back with something better to offer than silly Slipknot...a band you'll invariably be wholly embarassed to admit to liking in about three years time

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I made a slipknot song on my toaster this morning, sucka! I'll post it right after you post your rap song. And it better be rap and not hip-hop, because I know they're two different things. One's more jungly!

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Slipknot had robert fripp's jaw dropping at one of their shows

trevapina, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

As it happens, I have a weakness for Slipknot - I think "Left Behind" is a great single, I know from the kids I used to work with that Slipknot speaks to them & that, to me, is meaningful. I love the way they rep for Iowa while running it down at the same time. But Trevor said this:

slipknot is more complex than any metal band out there

Which makes me think you haven't really listened to much metal, Trevor. Cult of Luna is considerably more complex than Slipknot (but just as hard); so's God Forbid; so's Radiation 4, and so's Lickgoldensky, and I could seriously sit here all day and name metal bands who are both ridiculously complex and extremely hard. But that wasn't your original point. Your original point was "rap isn't music," but I can't imagine how you can make that case - what is music if not words and notes arranged rhythically? Certainly rap is that, so your case fails there.

The "hiphop originated in Africa and was very junglish" is just bizarre and I have no idea what your source is for that claim but, umm, you're wrong about it.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ok say what you want about Trevor but "go listen to your Howard Jones cassingles" is unbelievably classic

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, now that I'm seeing someone who actually said something nice about Slipknot, given the cognitive dissonance inside me, I can't keep up this charade anymore.

THEY SUCK, THEY FUCKING SUCK, SUCK, SUCK, SUCK.

Goddamn, they blow harder than a stuck vaccuum cleaner.

Yes--just because something isn't a particular good version of the genre doesn't mean it's not a part of the genre.

Used to be humorous when black metal fans would come across an album they hated and would say it wasn't black metal as a result.

i was strictly referring to what people called this music, i never hear people call things "rap" at all, though i work in a hiphop record store so the people who come in there know what is up for the most part. but it is kind of ironic if people call it "rap" as the rapping involved is usually pretty awful.

2a)A ratio is what you upload to what you download. If you maintain a good ration, that mean that you are a good member of whatever site that you are uploading/downloading from, and that you understand that if there was no one who would upload, then no one would have anything. It it only fair that people upload, because if no one did, we would not get all of the music that we wanted. Give and you shall receive!!!

2b)2.13

3) African American culture has ruined western culture and Popular music. Now that they have taken over, It is all about killing and street cred when it shouldn't be like that. you should not be popular because of how many people that you have killed (Young Buck), How many times that you have been shot (50 cent), how many women that you've had sex with (Eazy-E) how much weed that you smoke (Afro man), how man people that you piss off (eminem) or how much money that you have (lil' wayne). It should be about how good you are. It should be about the music that you create. It should take time to make, and not just be some senseless babble that you write on a piece of paper that isn't even true. Although some of the songs are good, a select few by a very, very small amount of artists, it is not good music. It is just catchy beats with funny/creative puns and plays on words. African American Culture and popularity has ruined music.

5) Babyshambles -Shotters Nation. This is the most unjust because it got such a low low rating. it got a 4.0, this means that it is total shit. I think that this is totally out of line. The Album is not only not bad, it is actually good. I liked it a lot, and though that it was a solid Album. Pitchfork is known for giving unjust ratings especially to indie rock/punk bands, but this is just ridiculous.

6) morrissey. First because I think that he is the best out of all of them. But also because If i'm stranded on an island, and can listen to anyones full collection, I'm going to want a lot of music to listen too. I don't want to get bored with one or two albums. Also he has the most solid overall albums. He doesn't have some that are good and some that are really bad, all of them are solid, and all of them I like.

7)
I couldn't get my computer to upload the picture, although this is it. If you have facebook I think that you can look at it, although if you don't I would gladly send it to you!!!
