alan r. banana (alanbanana), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I always get Built to Spill and Guided by Voices mixed up.

Built by Voices? Guided to Spill?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The fact that I think both bands are mind-crushingly dull doesn't help.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

it always takes me a second to remember who is petey pablo and who is pastor troy.

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Steely Dan/Steeley Span

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops, Steeleye Span

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to get New Order and Depechemode mixed up.

Names are very different, but for some reason, I thought they were the same band.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

A vast error, Aja. Vast.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I always get Easyworld and Clearlake confused.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I know!!!

My grandma got them mixed up too!

Wow...

Aja (aja), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost

Aja (aja), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Mogwai and Slint.

SOMEONE HAD TO SAY IT.

Leee O'Ironic (Leee), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

There is no way I'm getting Franz Ferdinan (or whatever) and Franz Stahl mixed up.

Franz Stahl is way better!!!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I tend to say Mindless Self Indulgence when I mean Stabbing Westward, go figure.

tessa, Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Once I got Jane's Addiction mixed up with the Shins and my mom yelled at me.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

::sigh::

Do the words "Jane's Addiction" and "Shins" sound even remotely similar? This isn't about their music, it's about how similar the respective names are.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The Wedding Present. / The Birthday Party.

It doesn't make any sense to confuse those two, and yet, it does.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i am ashamed to say that i always do a double take before referring to one of either terry or teddy riley

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, it does make sense. Gedge named his band The Wedding Present as he was a fan of the Birthday Party (though you'd never know it from listening to their respective musics).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Gluecifer/Jucifer. I love Jucifer, never heard Gluecifer.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

::sigh::
Do the words "Jane's Addiction" and "Shins" sound even remotely similar? This isn't about their music, it's about how similar the respective names are.

Oh, like getting Killing Heidi and Killing Joke mixed up?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

...or Killer Joe.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

...or Killing Time

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

What about the Hives and the Vines. I almost did, but not quite

Aja (aja), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I still do.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Hives and Vines. Them too.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I still do.

Wow.

I don't anymore.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Vines, Hives, Vives, Hines....all the same shit. The Hives are a better band, but it's not like they're particularly breaking any new ground or anything.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I continue to confuse Rocket from the Crypt and Rocket from the Tombs.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

What if someone got New Found Glory and New Order mixed up?

That would be so sad. I'd laugh at them!!!

I think once I thought Bens Folds Five was Five For Fighting and I thought Five For Fighting were Tears For Fears. I think I've finally got it right though.

Oh, my mom has something from Rocket from the Tombs.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I get Rockets from the Tombs / Crypt confused, too, in a "flipping-through-CDs-and-going-'hey, what's that? / Oh, fuck, it's them again'" kind of way. Sometimes I get Toni and Anthony Braxton confused, but I take it in better spirits.

jazz odysseus, Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I mix up the Detroit Cobras and the Dirtbombs a lot.

Also, the Von Bondies and the Dandy Warhols. It's all the same to me.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

It doesn't help matters when the Thrills insist upon pronouncing their name as the Trills.
Not that matters such as this matter much.

non-u, Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

What if someone got New Found Glory and New Order mixed up?

They're not fit to enjoy the benefits of oxygen.

Thrills, Chills and isn't there a band called The Kills too?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a fan of Destroyer, Pig Destroyer, and Destroyer666. Can't say I ever confuse them though.

I do confuse Robert Palmer and Robert Plant when talking about either of them, though, which is dumb.

And I still don't know the difference between Corey Hart and John Waite.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

And I still don't know the difference between Corey Hart and John Waite.

Well, Corey wears sunglasses at night.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Rocket from the Crypt ought to be confused at every available opportunity.

non-u, Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Neal Halstead and Neil Hagerty, for some reason.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to get the Mekons and the Membranes confused, but don't seem to have that problem anymore.

The last few years or so.

*sigh*

jazz odysseus, Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Califone and Calexico.

bbc6 personality (bbc6 personality), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

in spoken language !!! and Tok-Tok have caused embarassing misunderstandings, even sporadic fist violence.

non-u, Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Jawbox and Jawbreaker on more than one occasion.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony and Toni Braxton. That was confusing for about a week.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, they're a classic example.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Jawbox/Jawbreaker I mean.

Wolf Eyes Black Eyes Black Dice Wolf Parade AIDS Wolf Black Lips

Elliot (Elliot), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

GBV and MBV, but only in acronym form. Makes for some very confusing posts.

Replacements and Rembrandts, upon a time. I was aghast for a while that the 'Mats had reformed just to make the 'Friends' theme, before I realized my error.

Phil Collins/Peter Gabriel, because they're both overbearing ponces.

There's a band like Six By Seven that's Six From Seven or something, that I get mixed up with.

derrick (derrick), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to mix up Townes Van Zandt and Van Dyke Parks a lot. I mean, not the music, but those triple name things.

And because Pig Destroyer did a track called "Black Dice" every time I see something about Black Dice I have to take a second to remember that they're not Pig Destroyer. If you see what I mean.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

GvsB = GBV

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, Townes van Zandt vs. Stevie van Zandt from the E Street Band.

derrick (derrick), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Kevin Shields and Kevin Ayers, shamefully.

don (don), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

malkmus and momus

Bob Six (bobbysix), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was a kid I had a deep-rooted association between the voice of Bruce Springsteen and and the image Sylvester Stallone. To this day I have no idea why.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 18 April 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Toni Di Bart and Tony De Vit. Surely everyone does that, though?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 18 April 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Replacements and Rembrandts, upon a time
...and add The Refreshments to that list, while you're at it.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Sunday, 18 April 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"It doesn't help matters when the Thrills insist upon pronouncing their name as the Trills." Pronouncing it as The Trills is so much easier! And being too precise is just so uncool.

coco rammstein, Sunday, 18 April 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Ryan Adams-Brian Adams, or is it Bryan Adams. That's worse.

Alex Pittman (Alex Pittman), Sunday, 18 April 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ryan Adams-Brian Adams, or is it Bryan Adams? That's worse.

senior pizzicarta, Sunday, 18 April 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Funeral for a Friend/Hell is for Heroes. I don't mind one of them, but I can never remember which one it is.

Also the Vines and the Hives.

(I used to conflate Bill Callaghan and Will Oldham, but that was justifiable confusion given how bastard often Oldham changes his stagename. honest.)

cis (cis), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

the Flaming Lips and the Psychedelic Furs.

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I've gotten Yo La Tengo and the Flaming Lips mixed up on the basis of their album covers (perhaps a new thread?).

Leee O'Gaddy (Leee), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Whitesnake / White Lion
Black Crows / Counting Crows

It would probably help if I had any of these in my collection.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Steely Dan vs. Stealer's Wheel
Soul Asylum vs. Collective Soul

Harold Budd and Roy Budd

Curt (cgould), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin Rev and Alan Vega: And don't try to tell me their names aren't similar. Both have two syllable first names that are also common last names, and short last names with "v"s in them and automotive associations.

Curt (cgould), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Hollywood Brats/Hollywood Stars/Berlin Brats

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, like Steve Alan, Woodie Alan....

Curt (cgould), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to mix up Townes Van Zandt and Van Dyke Parks a lot. I mean, not the music, but those triple name things.

Same here, that's why I was amazed when Van Dyke Parks ended up working with Brian Wilson again. I was thinking, "but isn't he dead?"

mentalist (mentalist), Monday, 19 April 2004 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Peter Paul Reubens and Paul Reubens. Pee Wee? Dutch painter??? I get it all mixed up.

Justin Farrar (Justin Farrar), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

A bit dated, but I still confuse John Hiatt and John Prine.

Joseph McCombs, Monday, 19 April 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stands and The Stills

it's the 'The St...s' thing I tell you. What's with all these bands with names that have similar shapes?

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to know the difference between the Vibrators and the Buzzcocks, but forgot, then learned it again, then forgot again.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Squarepusher and Lifterpuller.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stands and The Stills are different bands? Shee-it. I don't just get them mixed up cause of their names, their posters are almost identical, too!

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to confuse Clan of Xymox and Xmal Deutschland....until I realized that I didn't really like either, so ultimately, it didn't matter.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Physicist Albert Einstein and musicologist Alfred Einstein...for a time I thought physicist Albert wrote essays about Mozart in his spare time, I think I saw a still of him holding a violin from Einstein on the Beach and that threw me.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Years ago, a friend of mine told me he found an album by "Marc" Almond
and said, "...it's really laid back, kinda fake jazz, nothing at all weird or perverse on it. Is it his early stuff?" He had an album by Mark Almond. We laughed.

Stephen Boyle (SBoyle), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Jan Jelinek, Philip Jeck, and Jandek.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Busta Rhymes and Buster Poindexter,

Modest Mouse and Mouse on Mars

Akercocke and Agalloch

And as a teenager I thought for a while that Chuck Dukowski from Black Flag had a side career writing gritty literature about drunks in LA. Did I have him confused with Bukowski, or Henry Rollins?

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

it took a few months of listening to records by skull control and skull kontrol to realize that they weren't the same band.

Matt B. (Matt B.), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and Kaito and Cayto

I know which one's which. Kaito's from Norwich and has gurls in it, and Cayto are mad Scottish types. But when they come up in conversation, it gets very confusing indeed.

and if you throw Cato into the conversation as well...

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Burning Airlines/Jets to Brazil

(just the airplane theme and the fact that I used to confuse their old bands - Jawbox and Jawbreaker as Aja mentioned)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I've noticed a lot of people say Scissor Girls when they mean to say Scissor Sisters.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

>I always get Built to Spill and Guided by Voices mixed up.<

For me it was always Built to Spill and Shudder to Think.

And I think there are about four different techno guys named Amon or Tobin who I always think are the same person, plus one in Cibo Matto, but I forget their names right now.

Also, Atlanta Rhythm Section/Amazing Rhythm Aces always confounded me.

And yeah Jawbox/Jawbreaker; I will third or fourth or fifth that one.

There are many more, which I may remember eventually.

chuck, Monday, 19 April 2004 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, Camel/Caravan too.

chuck, Monday, 19 April 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

And Saxon/Sampson.

chuck, Monday, 19 April 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And Murder City Devils/Demolition Doll Rods/Streetwalkin Cheetahs

And NOFX/Bouncing Souls

chuck, Monday, 19 April 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

For some reason, I used to get Television and Magazine mixed up.

BanjoMania (Brilhante), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Palace Brothers/Perniece Brothers

Lambchop/Lamb/Mountain Goats/a few other even toed hoofed mammals

chuck, Monday, 19 April 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I've noticed a lot of people say Scissor Girls when they mean to say Scissor Sisters

I'll make it a trifecta by putting the Sun City Girls into this mix of name confusion...i get all three mixed up.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Stills/Thrills/Thorns (I STILL can't keep these straight)

chuck, Monday, 19 April 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, I left out Detox Darlings, or whatever they're called. They belong with these ones, too.

chuck, Monday, 19 April 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Stone Temple Pilot and Urge Overkill.

Verve and Verve Pipe.

Stereolab and Stereophonics. Which shits me.

Stephen Bishop/Elvin Bishop
Frut/Frost/Frigid Pink

Mudvayne/Puddle of Mudd/Stereomud/Mushroomhead

I have no patience, however, for people who confused Rocket From the Tombs with Rocket From the Crypt. That makes no sense to me at all!!

Curt (cgould), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought my first Nick Drake album, after confusing him for Nick Cave. An enviable mistake.

doug watson (solid air), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I Mother Earth/Our Lady Peace

Symmetrically similar names aside, both bands were (are?) also fairly boring '90s grunge-progsters, both were from around Toronto, and both made music that was largely forgettable (altho OLP's minor hit "Superman's Dead" was enjoyably annoying.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I always think of someone else when I see David Sylvian's name, but I don't know who. (NOT Syl Sylvain, although that seems like it would be a reasonable slip.)

Actually, I do have trouble keeping apart some of the NY Dolls/Dead Boys guys, and remembering who was in which band... Arthur Kane vs. Cheetah Chrome, etc.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

superpitcher and squarepusher

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

There's some band called the Apex Theory whose name always makes me momentarily think that I'm reading about the Aphex Twin.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Duster vs. Guster vs. Guther vs. Ganger vs. Guv'ner

udu wudu (udu wudu), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Amon Duul/Amon Duul II

Leee O'Gaddy (Leee), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The lesson of this thread: Obviously, the idea that each and every band should be allowed to choose a name to express their individuality MUST BE ABANDONED IMMEDIATELY in favor of mandatory seriial numbers.

"Mystic Chords of Memory, you say? Afraid not! You're Artist #24830329 now and forevermore."

Also, I thought there was an unknown German kraut rock band called Noy for at least a year, until I put it together that they had been talking about Neu!.

And though I don't get them confused, I always have a moment of hesitation whenever I have to speak the name of a composer with a non-intuitively pronounced name: Penderecki, Gorecki, Reich, Boulez, Xenakis.

A lot of these seem to be instances where the spelling or names are similar.

Not me (of course), but many people think Robert Palmer and Robert Plant are the same guy.
It's easy to get Ryan Adams and Bryan Adams mixed up because of the similar spelling.

Amerie, Ciara, Cassie, Toya, Kandi, Lil' Mo and Nivea are interchangeable artists in the same genre.
Allure, Xscape, Brownstone, Total and SWV were all similar and interchangeable and easy to mix up as well.

Totally get Weezer and Ween, since I've never listened to either and they're both alt rock from the 90s.

I have just realized that Eddie Chacon is not Eddie Marcon

Pitchfork's 2023 album list has both Yeule and Yaeji in the top 15
Even google's auto-correct gets those two mixed up.

Do you think this young band chose the name as a tribute? Or are they unaware (or just don’t care) about the precedent?:

Godzilla Minus Zero/No Limit (morrisp), Tuesday, 2 January 2024 06:19 (two years ago)

that seems like sufficiently obvious obnoxiousness that it could be discovered without awareness of precedent.

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 February 2024 16:37 (two years ago)

I'm sure I've mentioned this before but for years I sorta ignored - very foolishly and to my detriment, it turns out - Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, because I was confusing them with emo band Sleeptime Trio (who were pretty good as I recall, just not really my thing these days)

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 20 February 2024 19:59 (two years ago)

I realised today that, even though I should know better because they're all very much in my wheelhouse and they're all actually pretty different and based in different countries, I often conflate:
