A lot of these seem to be instances where the spelling or names are similar.
Not me (of course), but many people think Robert Palmer and Robert Plant are the same guy. It's easy to get Ryan Adams and Bryan Adams mixed up because of the similar spelling.
Amerie, Ciara, Cassie, Toya, Kandi, Lil' Mo and Nivea are interchangeable artists in the same genre.Allure, Xscape, Brownstone, Total and SWV were all similar and interchangeable and easy to mix up as well.

Erroll Garner and Mal Waldron, for some reason. They're both pianists/composers, but their names aren't similar, apart from r's and l's. I even listened to one of them today, as part of an Eric Dolphy box, and I can't remember which one.

This one confused me for quite a while. I couldn't reckon how the noisy and alienating band I once heard in person had managed to become so beloved and commercially successful

That is exactly what happened to me. I saw Black Dice live and a little while later saw them being celebrated. I never gave Black Keys a proper listen thinking they were the noisy alienating band I saw.
