This makes it not so literal, doesn't it? Since the record is of them performing, not attending?

Reminder from a terrible pedant: it is possible to be trite and unimaginative without being literal.

"Bleach" features no bleach, "Cartoon Heroes" features no cartoon heroes (at least none I recognize),

Also, the "Water Babies" cover is actually an ironic twist on the Victorian concept; "Danse Macabre" is similar, a hipster reinvention of the graphic tradition. "Moving Pictures" is not "yawnsomely literal" because it employs a pun. Ditto "Rocks"--ok, it might not be Shakespeare, but it is sure trying harder than "The Raven."

Looks like AC/DC are the champions here!

no opinion, Monday, 2 February 2004 18:23 (twenty years ago) link

Bleach" features no bleach
Well, the photo is reversed, or, in a sense, bleached. Good enough for ya?

"Cartoon Heroes" features no cartoon heroes (at least none I recognize)

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 2 February 2004 20:34 (twenty years ago) link

Uh-oh, I'm forced to turn the pedantry up a notch!

"Bleach" features no bleach
Well, the photo is reversed, or, in a sense, bleached. Good enough for ya?

Note "in a sense"--i.e. not literal. Figurative. I would say that it doesn't even work very well, since the usual figurative sense of "bleach" is to whiten/make pale/washed out. But this image is simply a negative, with blacks as well as whites.

"Cartoon Heroes" features no cartoon heroes (at least none I recognize)
If you are saying that Aqua aren't cartoon heroes, you haven't watched music videos for the past eight years.

Evidently not enough of them, since I have no idea what you're talking about (and have never heard of Aqua till this thread). But I'm guessing they're actually a band. Either you're joking (i.e. it's not literal) or they are only cartoon heroes in a certain sense, or to a certain viewership, in which case "yawnsomely literal" is not going to cover it.

I also heartily object to the Betty Davis above--where is the literalness there...

no opinion, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 07:35 (twenty years ago) link

Evidently not enough of them, since I have no idea what you're talking about (and have never heard of Aqua till this thread).

Well, that explains a lot. How old are you? Are you telling me that you don't remember 'Barbie Girl'? Or 'Dr. Jones'??? Or The lawsuit against them from Mattel Inc.? The girl sings in a squeaky voice and the guy growls along. Cartoon Heroes if there ever were any.

Re. the 'Bleach' thing: The photo is clearly a tiresome and obvious pun on the title. That's yawningly literal enough for me.

Well, let's just say I'm old enough to know when to stop arguing when someone prefers to define "literal" in a way that encompasses "figurative." (which is to say over 30--the Aqua business sounds interesting, just missed it somehow!)

no opinion, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 08:58 (twenty years ago) link

Aqua are in a league of their own. You should check them out, for the entertainment value alone.

Re. the literal thing - are you then saying that the Tom Waits cover doesn't apply either, because the people sitting in the diner are not actual hawks as in the bird?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 09:04 (twenty years ago) link

And the AC/DC cover should be dispersed with, too, as it is not the video, but the TV blowing up. Come On!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 09:07 (twenty years ago) link

Since you insist,

You're right, at a certain point the figurative comes into play in all of language, nothing is purely literal. But I still see significant differences here.

Waits: "nighthawk" commonly means night owl, the album depicts people in a diner, presumably late at night. The idea is, teh title is "Nighthawks at the diner," let's show some nighthawks at a diner.

Joel: He wants to call the album Glass Houses, the suits say, great! Let's show you ready to throw a stone at, see, an actual glass house! Because that's the saying, you know! So we make the symbolism literal! Cool!

AC/DC: the phrase "Blow up your video" makes no sense at all, but the image is of a TV, with Angus Young on it, who could conceivably be in a vide being shown on that TV, and the TV is blowing up. It is a very lame attempt at a literal depiction of a silly idea.

In each case there is a phrase that is depicted visually in concrete terms.

Aqua: the thing is, they don't look like they're in a cartoon in that picture! I haven't seen the printed album, maybe it's different, but in the jpeg it looks like a photograph of the band. THey could have had them dressed as Superman, Power Rangers, whatever. So to see them as "cartoon heroes" I guess you're saying you need to rely on things you've seen in the past, subtexts, in which case we're clearly beyond the literal.

Nirvana: You're right, the image attempts to make a visual pun on the name. They don't say, "ok, bleach, let's show some bleach"--instead they think, how can we make a visual analog for "bleaching"? Let's use a negative image of the band performing live. YOu find this obvious--I don't since it inverts shades rather than erasing (bleaching) them--but literal it ain't.

AC/DC, Blow Up Your Own Video
[T}he phrase "Blow up your video" makes no sense at all, but the image is of a TV...

No, see. Angus did in fact blow up his video. Once his video blew up, well, that's when the TV went too. The above poster's comments are akin to saying that Timothy McViegh didn't blow up the Murrah Federal Building. Why, all he did was blow up a Ryder truck!

Ok, I'm just responding right now, trying to be less geeky...
No, see. Angus did in fact blow up his video. Once his video blew up, well, that's when the TV went too.
Yeah, ok, it makes sense in a cartoon-logic way: the music video is happening inside the TV. But:
The above poster's comments are akin to saying that Timothy McViegh didn't blow up the Murrah Federal Building.
Not so, if you are returning to the real world where that event happened. The Ryder truck was a physical object that was located next to the Federal Building. The video being blown up on the album cover is a transmission. Again, it does makes a certain fantasy sense.

But what's really interesting is what some of these covers say about what the bands and/or record companies think of their audience! Esp. since album covers are often this moment of sophistication (since, when, the late 60s? early 70s?), semiotic complexity, whatever, where the relationship between word and image is a game or puzzle... and then there's AC/DC's "Flick of the switch"! (or the one above, a great example!)

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 24 February 2014 05:02 (ten years ago) link

I think a lot of those are illustrating a visual pun on the title so not Yawnsomely Literal. Might have been thought of as quite imaginative at the time but got dulled by familiarity in the interval years.
Not like somebody's come along and generically botched something up as a bad advertising company might. Seems to be some thought put into what has been illustrated and how.
Also seems that a couple at least may have had the image in mind before naming.

Well done! Rupert Holmes ftw, looks like a pretty full life he's lived in that circle. We started at the Itsukushima Shrine, baby, and look where we've ended up.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 11 August 2014 01:15 (nine years ago) link

ha. scrolling through i thought for half a second that it was a band called full circle with all kinds of inexplicable album titles.

Merdeyeux, Monday, 11 August 2014 01:19 (nine years ago) link

That band would have ruled! Like, each time they're trying to make up a really generic name for a different style of artist that might put out an album called "Full Circle."

Doctor Casino, Monday, 11 August 2014 01:34 (nine years ago) link

a lot of those albums can be summed up as "this is my first album in 20 years!" or "this is gonna be last album ever!" or "this is the album where I reflect upon my long and fruitful career." Rupert Holmes must have been an extraordinary human being in order to have gone full circle at age 34, just 2 years after his big hit.

alternate cover art: an elderly Brian Wilson is sitting on the beach with a margarita in hand, being fanned by two beautiful beach babes. nearby, five young men in green-and-white striped swim trunks are running down the pier, just about to jump in the water. the chubby one (representing a young Brian Wilson) is waving at the older Brian to join them, but the older Brian dismisses him with a smug grin and a flick of the wrist. So many aspects of 60s titles carry the seeds of the thread genre - the jazz albums punning on the artists' name thread really opens out that territory. It's really hard to articulate what feels different about the lame and terrible jokes or proclamations of casual-ness from the later period. Maybe the sense that the artist came up with the title themselves and feel it represents their DGAF Good-Times Young Dude Swag, versus the studio titles cooked up by the advertising boys down the hall.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 03:22 (five years ago) link

But the windmill isn't in a valley, it's on a hill. Why would you put a windmill in a valley? The album should be called Hill of the Windmill.

Or "Valley From Which You Can See the Windmill". Imagine if it was called Whirlpool of the Meerkats or Ocean of the Spiders. It wouldn't make sense. I'm sure there are whirlpools from which you can see meerkats but that doesn't narrow things down enough.

Otherwise every place on Earth would be called Location From Which You Can See the Moon, except for caves.

Ashley Pomeroy, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 19:44 (five years ago) link

I think the windmill rules over the valley with its metallic sails of doom, is the idea. Ocean of the Spiders would've been better for sure.

It just hit me that this "iconic" album title and cover is actually horribly unimaginative, literally named after the fucking recording studio and the cover is just them walking on a road. It's not far off from calling a song "Untitled Original." Still one of my favorite records of all time.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 30 November 2020 06:11 (three years ago) link

Is "God's great banana skin" some known expression/metaphor that I'm just not familiar with, or did Rea come up with it himself? What does it even mean?

Tuomas, Monday, 30 November 2020 07:54 (three years ago) link

Ah, it's explained at the Wiki page for the title song:

Rea was inspired to write the song after he noticed his daughter was tempted to laugh at "somebody who'd been giving her a hard time". Rea told John Pidgeon in 1992: "I told her 'don't laugh when people go down even if they've been awful to you because you're tempting God to throw you a banana skin'. It's half moral and half superstition. Anybody who's done me a disservice in life, and I see them go down, you get tempted to laugh. I don't know whether it's superstition or not, or I daren't laugh just in case God throws me a banana skin as well."

Tuomas, Monday, 30 November 2020 07:56 (three years ago) link

xp ok whatever named after the road the studio is on, still extremely uninspired

For our American friends. Bowlers in cricket will routinely keep one side of the cricket ball shiny by rubbing it on their trousers - it helps the bowler to swing the ball through the air - hence the red mark on this fellow's trousrs.

To be fair, that one is kind of unavoidable: if you name your album "Circles", and there's nothing circular on the cover, then somebody in the art department was trying to get cute.

https://i.discogs.com/O7jO19p0YJvfUDA2hvLvk163TO4GKwpo-KC_hYUegs4/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:398/w:400/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9SLTMxODI1/My0xMTkzMjE3NDk1/LmpwZWc.jpeg

enochroot, Thursday, 3 March 2022 03:42 (two years ago) link

Circles is even better than that picture portrays. The vinyl had a die-cut cover around the largest photo of William and it was also a circle, of course.

(Album is decent, btw. Very Bitches Brew and Hendrix-inspired fusion.)

Fleet Foxes Shore is also another one where it's like, "Yeah, what else could possibly go on the cover?"

I stand corrected.

And obviously the correct version of that cover art going forward, I've just decided. Thank you.

One of the other threads prompted me to look through Hipgnosis' portfolio, which was about 1% greatness and 99% terrible puns. I was slightly surprised that Herman Rarebell's Nip in the Bud wasn't a cutting-edge 1970s photo collage of e.g. a Japanese woman curled up inside a flower. Or a cartoon of a Japanese man emerging from the mouth of Bud Flanagan. I don't know.

But for every record that subverted my expectations there were e.g.:

And also Big Jim's Back by Big Jim Sullivan - it's a photo of his back. But that seemed too obvious. It must have been posted already.

Scrolling through all those records I am again struck by how utterly, totally, inconceivably alien the likes of Third World War, Toe Fat, Ancient Grease, the Edgar Broughton Band etc are to my Depeche Mode-trained ears. It's as if the British music industry decided in 1970 that Humble Pie and Spooky Tooth were the future, so they signed up loads of scuzzy British blues-rock bands that sounded like Slade - but slower and without the catchy melodies - and then realised a year later that it was a bad idea and dropped them all.

Meanwhile the public rejected them, they were erased from the collective public memory by pub rock, and they never ever had a revival anywhere on Earth ever.

see also (not too far) upthread for Fats On Fire.

She’s not out of them, looks to me like she’s got plenty of bags. I suppose she could be out of some… different bags. Different different bags.

I finally got a copy of Fire Of Unknown Origin, and I never before noticed how literal the cover art is (though, it's the opposite of yawnsome, to be fair).
