I just listened to "Policemanoid" five times in a row. Talk about how great The Yummy Fur were and how every good band since totally ripped them off.

man you're behind the curve!

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't Franz Ferdinand do this already?

I listened to a 7" of 'Stereo Girls' the other day. It was better than I remembered. Where can you get their albums nowadays, though? Amazon seems to come up with nothing.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

the male nurse were better

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Where punk rock starts and ends?
Maybe if you listened to Liliput,
Your songs would find more friends."

Blasphemy!

Ryan WS (fffv), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't find anything on the male nurse on the usual internet suspects. : /

are liliput good? i just allmusic-ed them and they're in esteemed company: the slits & the raincoats.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Now listening to "Eisiger Wind" on repeat.

Ryan WS (fffv), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

mac user sadly gareth : /

downloading that mp3 now tho & eyeing up that liliput/kleenex reissue on amazon.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The Yummy Fur were excellent.

Search: Nightclub LP and Kinky Cinema CD (59 minute long 60 track! compilation)

Destry: Sexy World LP

Also worth a punt if you like the Kleenex/Lilliput thing were The Yummy Fur's contemporaries Lung Leg.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 15 January 2004 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i second the male nurse being way better - some of my favorite 7"s ever

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 15 January 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

Ha -- listening to Kinky Cinema, trawling thru the archives for YF discussion, and I come across Douglas' post just as "Liliput" starts playing!

city worker, Monday, 16 November 2009 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

Awesome! Brian and Paul, celebs though they may be, may be surprised at John's pulling power after the show..

Tracer Hand, Monday, 16 November 2009 15:48 (sixteen years ago)

should i not have sold my yummy fur LPs and CDs?

figuratively, but in a very real way (amateurist), Monday, 16 November 2009 20:05 (sixteen years ago)

If I'm unable to get into the Glasgow gig due to Sleazy's being swamped, then I'll be deeply miserable.

Yeah I went to that one, it was a fun gig.

Are the 1990s any good?

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 16 January 2010 13:45 (sixteen years ago)

Pretty boring imo and nothing like The Yummy Fur really

i swear on my life i feel so powerfull (musically) (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 16 January 2010 14:15 (sixteen years ago)

I saw them play a couple of songs at a gig a few years ago but cannot remember a thing about them.

Don't they have a message of singles and whatnot that's uncollected? Would love a comprehensive sweep up of that stuff.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 10 October 2019 03:39 (six years ago)

There's a career-spanning compilation coming out next week but it's an overall best of:

signing and gig at rough trade east on the 24th

koogs, Thursday, 10 October 2019 10:39 (six years ago)

Circa 2005 there was talk of a compilation and reissues on Bada Bing records but nothing came of them. Shame, as they would have benefitted from the Franz Ferdinand mania of the time (I even remember seeing a photo of the YF in a tabloid article about FF). Would be nice if the singles are not all vinyl tips but they don't strike me as the sort of band who would look after their masters

PaulTMA, Thursday, 10 October 2019 10:42 (six years ago)

rips

PaulTMA, Thursday, 10 October 2019 10:42 (six years ago)

Yeah when I saw news about a release I was a bit annoyed it's just a best of. Most of their stuff is way OOP, I have a bunch of singles but only 1 album. My local record shop was playing the Sexy World LP the other day and I went and asked how much it was but it was their personal copy and not for sale!

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 10 October 2019 10:47 (six years ago)

I might see if I can get to that rough trade gig though, it's pretty near my office and I am in the office that day

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 10 October 2019 10:49 (six years ago)

i have the first couple of eps but don't recognise any of the track titles. (mainly because the eps had names that weren't track names. Kodak Nancy Europe, Music By Walt Disney But Played By Yuri Gagarin Thus a Political Record...)

wikipedia says there was already one comp - Kinky Cinema (Guided Missile CD, 1997) but discogs has no details.

koogs, Thursday, 10 October 2019 10:59 (six years ago)

It is on discogs but you have to search for it, for some reason it doesn't show on the main Yummy Fur page

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 10 October 2019 11:45 (six years ago)

Kinky Cinema has a lot of re-records on it, despite having a billion songs on it it's not even comprehensive of the band up that point

PaulTMA, Thursday, 10 October 2019 11:48 (six years ago)

Off the top of my head (it's been years since I've heard it), tracks from this EP and later singles do not appear in their original superior forms
https://www.discogs.com/The-Yummy-Fur-Music-By-Walt-Disney-But-Played-By-Yuri-Gagarin-Thus-A-Political-Record/release/401865

PaulTMA, Thursday, 10 October 2019 11:53 (six years ago)

That one is on the Seven Unlucky Sevens Slampt compilation, which I do have!

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 10 October 2019 12:00 (six years ago)

So happy to see interest in The Yummy Fur.

Kinky Cinema is fantastic, but does include many re-records / alternate versions, it isn't at all a comprehensive selection. (Most egregious omission for me is 'Typical of Boys' which I've uploaded to Youtube)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCVdV3Pe5_s

There is a comprehensive TYF fansite here which has a proper discography.

http://www.mcgazz.co.uk/yummyfur/

I've been trying to get hold of everything in one form or another in order to put together a proper compilation for myself, would like to share it on here but right now nothing is available to buy and nothing is on spotify, only a few things on Youtube too, so ideas welcome. If people can make decent rips of the early EPs that would be great too of course.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 10 October 2019 12:05 (six years ago)

I was at that Lungleg Slampt show but sadly there aren't any crowd shots so I can cringe at how dorky I look

Animal Bitrate (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 10 October 2019 12:08 (six years ago)

I found this second hand in Monorail a few years ago. Contacted John and he said someone made a bunch of them for the band members so someone must have sold their own copy.
https://i.imgur.com/Ry7kxgq.jpg

PaulTMA, Thursday, 10 October 2019 12:20 (six years ago)

Amazed by that, it even has 'This Is Andrew Sinclair' which I have never been able to find.
OTOH it has a few duds and no 'The Career Saver' which is imo the best thing they ever recorded.
Still 9/10 would very much like to hear.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 10 October 2019 12:28 (six years ago)

I was hoping that fan site discography would detail which tracks were re-recorded on "Kinky Cinema", anyone have that info?

Camrade - I have mp3s of the Supermarket 7", email me for them.

It's sometimes hard to tell, since they mess with titles, but here's what's unavailable anywhere:
The Grand Monophonic Yum Yum - from their self-titled cassette
Night Club - from Babies In The Cockpit split cassette

North American tour cancelled unfortunately.

It is? Damn, haven't seen anything yet, will check...

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 24 October 2019 16:54 (six years ago)

Yummy fur Tour of United States and Canada update.

Unfortunately this tour has been cancelled. The decision was made a few weeks ago to not go ahead but the cancellation process has been convoluted and this news has been slow to surface. We have waited this long to give everyone involved time to put their house in order. We apologise to the many people who may already have made or be in the process of making travel and accommodation plans. The tour will hopefully be rescheduled for next year.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 24 October 2019 16:55 (six years ago)

Ah yes, see it now. Well that sucks.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 24 October 2019 16:56 (six years ago)

I don't know if it's partially down to seeing one of my favourite bands for the first time ever, or not having been to other gigs in the last decade, but fucking hell they were brilliant and I'm still smiling two days later.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 26 October 2019 22:36 (six years ago)

well I can't type tonight but I just checked, "This Is Andrew Sinclair"? Just checked and I've randomly got that, some beetroot based single. I got all the late period shit, I'm missing the early stuff and would welcome and potentially contribute to any blog

Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Saturday, 26 October 2019 22:57 (six years ago)

I've been through my collection and am now only missing

'Questionable Book Shoot' from Shared Stereo 7" compilation
The whole 1995 John Peel session

If anyone has any ideas on where to find these I would be very grateful.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 2 November 2019 22:46 (six years ago)

I had that years ago but no more. Found it on Soulseek

PaulTMA, Saturday, 2 November 2019 22:50 (six years ago)

I will have a look on there again!

Also I still have no idea what was on those first two demo tapes (The Yummy Fur - 17 Tracks, The Edith Massey Eggsplosion, 17 Tracks) but presume that's the other stuff on Kinky Cinema. Someone on bandcamp is trying to sell four (skipping) tracks from the second tape for £2, all are on kinky cinema.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 2 November 2019 22:56 (six years ago)

I've got Shared Stereo on mp3. Can do Dropbox or something?

Would also like to know what's on those tapes!

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 2 November 2019 23:18 (six years ago)

Would be brilliant - james at centuriesofsound dot com !

Didn't find either on slsk, but there is a lot more yf on there than there was when i last checked in 2018

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 2 November 2019 23:30 (six years ago)

> The whole 1995 John Peel session

there were two peel sessions on youtube when i looked (and one for someone else?)

koogs, Saturday, 2 November 2019 23:32 (six years ago)

can only find a 1998 session on Slsk

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 2 November 2019 23:36 (six years ago)

sent you a Dropbox link - I've sent the whole thing - it's at 96 CBR but that's because it's mono, would be 192 in stereo

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 2 November 2019 23:39 (six years ago)

I just put the 1995 Peel Session on Dropbox, along with scans from a contemporaneous zine interview. I sent the link to Camraderie/James, let me know if anyone else wants it.

city worker, Sunday, 3 November 2019 15:09 (six years ago)

Wow CP and city worker, think that is everything!

After listening I'm going to sort them and find something to do with them.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 3 November 2019 17:11 (six years ago)

i've been told that Questionable Book Shoot might be the same track as Shaggy from Kinky Cinema, possibly even the same recording

PaulTMA, Sunday, 3 November 2019 19:09 (six years ago)

I have come to the same conclusion, yup.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 3 November 2019 19:26 (six years ago)

three months pass...

Alrighty then, going to do as threatened and turn this thread into a TYF listening thread. I've set up a Youtube account for the purpose, and tried & failed to get in touch with John / Jackie to get his permission to upload everything there.

If it's only me on this thread and occasional other posters then that should be ok, but should point out that most of the early tracks are less than a minute long anyway, so why not have a listen to (one of) my favourite band(s).

Let's start with some undated early demos later put on the 'Kinky Cinema' compilation, no idea when these are from, so putting them at the start as they sound raw and scratchy.

This is 'The Walt Disney Murder Club' - a good place to start as it explains what the group are about.

This one, I think, is quite Cardiacs.

Thank you for posting these, Camaraderie. I'm following this and listening...

This is the last of the really early demos, however we are not going to move to much higher production values for quite a while.

On to Music By Walt Disney But Played By Yuri Gagarin Thus A Political Record - their first proper release.

This is 'Goosebump' - bit of a low-key start to the EP

Always thought it was funny how he nails the anxiety of the subject matter in the 7" version, but sound like he can't be bothered when it appears on Kinky Cinema

PaulTMA, Thursday, 19 March 2020 22:15 (six years ago)

I'm still hoping for a comprehensive list of single versions I need to track down.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 19 March 2020 22:21 (six years ago)

The re-recordings of MBWDBPBYG tracks on Kinky Cinema are some of the weaker bits on there. I'm actually going to post the re-make of Father Ubu Says because of the way he changes the lyrics to ones about how much he hates the song.

Stuttering rhythms give way to a bit of low-fi power pop, then synthesis

Is everything on "Kinky Cinema" a re-recording?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 26 March 2020 01:25 (six years ago)

No, it's a mix of early demos, mid-period demos, re-recordings and new experimental bits in roughly equal proportions.

There! is! no! Santa! Claus!

This one is fairly new to me as I never had this EP, and there wasn't a re-record on Kinky Cinema.

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 26 March 2020 09:53 (six years ago)

So, I totally love this band and know these records really well but it's been hard to get into this thread. Breaking up something like Kinky Cinema (which is 60 >90 second songs) into individual tracks feels quite academic, like putting a frozen tissue sample under a microscope. Which is fine, even potentially revealing but to my ears reduces it to something like a historical artifact.

IMO, this would work better record-by-record than track-by-track.

Deflatormouse, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 18:19 (six years ago)

It will make more sense when I get to more substantial releases.

Will continue this tomorrow as I finished a Twitter thing which was taking up all my time.

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 18:22 (six years ago)

The 7" singles and EP's are their most substantial releases! IMO

Deflatormouse, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 18:45 (six years ago)

They are! But I want to give time to listen to both sides of Supermarket / The Career Saver for example.

I suspect checking out TYF references might be why I ended up going to film school.

This is one of my favourites, so many things happen in 50 seconds, that slap bass at the start. It's almost a Cardiacs song.

Hm I should get back to these. One day.

Anyway, here is the greatest song ever recorded. It sounded wrong on the Piggy Wings CD, so I fixed it.

Playing with Bis, Art Brut & Lung Leg in September

https://www.ticketweb.uk/event/bis-saint-lukes-tickets/13446804

(Less excited to see Bis & Art Brut (though both are fine) but am hovering over buying a ticket to see Lung Leg / TYF on the same bill even though it means travelling up from Cambridge to Glasgow somehow)

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 25 April 2024 12:38 (two years ago)

I saw that - same tbh, not that bothered about Bis and not really a fan of Art Brut but that looks like a fun gig

was gonna go to see Lung Leg in London about 18 months ago but there was a train strike on so I couldn't

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 25 April 2024 12:48 (two years ago)

I remember there was a reason I couldn't go, completely escapes me now.

Missed out on that Lung Leg show for the same reason. Even though I would enjoy seeing bis, not sure I can justify a trip for this though.

Great tonight in London (although I missed the beginning due to trains). Played a couple of new songs!

Colonel Poo, Friday, 31 October 2025 23:43 (seven months ago)

Agh they were playing London?! Well guess I couldn't go anyway. Yes, heard a few new ones in Glasgow last year, don't know if Unity Over Europe counts as new as it must be nearly a decade old now, but it's a good one.

sent a message through the Internet but it rejected (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 1 November 2025 00:22 (seven months ago)

They were a late addition as support to 100 Flowers who I was going to see anyway so a nice bonus. I think more people were there to see them tbh
