Lil Jon Needs To Fall Under A Truck

So I got the compilation Crunk And Disorderly (TVT) in the mail the other day, and listened to it yesterday. And I have come to the realization that "crunk" is the worst style of rap I have ever heard, and that includes the Surf MCs.

If anyone wants to explain the appeal of these country-ass, bellowing morons, please go right ahead.

"Some people don’t like it and can’t get their ear around it. But I’ve got my ear around it and went ‘oh OK, this is how people feel about me.’ How I feel about them dirty South people, when I couldn’t get my ear around it I realised there’s a whole load of people who listened to me and think ‘I cant get my ear around it.’ Eventually if they keep listening and listening they will. But dirty sound is just grimey, dirty music." - Wiley

Lil John is pretty funny. When I first saw him on the MTV awards I thought he was a comedian poking fun at rapper excess.

The song and it's many versions live in the world THIS year. Who the hell cares when it was per se' "released to record stores"? The merengue version just came out, for crissakes. And it is FAST FAST FAST. If the link I posted above isn't enough, I also recommend reading recent Voice pieces by Carol Cooper (on Lil Jon), Frank Kogan (on Ying Yang Twins, Youngbloodz), and Chuck Eddy (licks on David Banner's screwed album, Hitman Sammmy Sam, plus a NEW all-crunk roundup including the great aforementioned *Crunk and Disordly* that'll appropriately run the week of Christmas.) On the other hand, as Frank has pointed out, Southern crunk and Scandinavian dark metal increasingly have many beautiful gothic North European melodies in common, and if I remember right, Phil's not a big fan of Scandinavian dark metal, either. So maybe that explains...something.

An interesting tidbit about Bacdafucup from AMG:

"The album even beat out such stiff competition as Dr. Dre's rap classic The Chronic at the Soul Train Awards for Best Rap Album that year [1993]."

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:47 (twenty years ago) link

Not really. I saw Onyx open for Public Enemy and Ice-T and House of Pain at a show at the New Ritz in 1992 that most of the bands refused to show up for due to poor promotion. I remember thinking that Onyx were pretty entertaining, so I picked up the album when it came out. Biohazard kinda ruined "Slam," actually.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:06 (twenty years ago) link

Oddly, Onyx's great 1990 debut single "Ah And We Do It Like That" is one of the most country-sounding hip hop records ever; they even *talk* about being country in it. So yeah, proto-crunk for sure.

Lil Jon, according to Chris Weingarten who interviewed him a couple weeks ago, has apparently always been a big Dead Kennedys and Ramones fan. Which might in part explain the mosh pits at his concerts.

Sorry I didn't mention yr Bone Crusher piece, Sterling; I also left out Yancey Strickler on Killer Mike, Kandia Crazy Horse on Bubba Sparxxx, Tony Green on LOTS of stuff, etc. (I was only thinking the past month or two. But the Voice's crunk-consciousness is indeed nothing new.)

chuck, Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:11 (twenty years ago) link

"We kind of call it 'black punk rock'," Jon says. You see the same reaction to rock bands. People jumping up and down the whole show, mosh pits, pushing and shoving. A lot of screaming and yelling."

(From Vibe.) (The pattern of every single music magazine article on new Southern rap-- Lil Jon is the crunk-is-the-future guy and then David Banner says 'Well, we aren't all about the crunk stuff' and then the T.I./Killer Mike/Youngbloodz interview. And then the sidebar explaining the slang.)

I still maintain that
T.I.'s album Trap Muzik
is the best so far;

but it's not quite "crunk"
the way Lil Jon, Ying Yang are,
neither is Banner

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:43 (twenty years ago) link

Trap Muzik isn't crunk by any definition of the word. When that guy said it was the "southern Illmatic," he was pretty right on. It's tired and [another word] and mostly not in a really good way. It's not bad but it's pretty boring.

d k (d k), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:53 (twenty years ago) link

No, it's not boring,
and no, it's not tired at all.
He's a great rapper.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:57 (twenty years ago) link

yah, Trap Muzik is pretty un-crunk. though you can still get crunk to it.

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:03 (twenty years ago) link

Honestly, though, given their longstanding allegiance to post-planet-rock electro beats long after the West and East coasts abandoned them, 2 Live Crew and Tag Team and 95 South and the Quad City DJs and L'Trimm and Maggotron and the Hi-Town DJs were all probably way more proto-crunk than Onyx were. Just because Lil Jon's music has gang shouts in it doesn't mean gangshouts are the defining factor of crunk.

chuck, Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:04 (twenty years ago) link

Trust me, Haikunym. I'll try to put this into indie rock terms for you. Okay, T.I. is like The Strokes of Southern rap. (UGK, Television.) Even if it's the best of the three rap CDs you bought this year and it appeals to people whose experience ended with New York rap/rockist touchstones, it's not that great and it's boring. I'm glad you enjoy it.

Oh yeah, and there was also the TNC piece on Banner, though I totally disagreed with him as usual, but in that good constructive sorta disagreeing way, also as usual.

also, from the "playahata.com" dictionary:

Crunk/Krunk: Slang, adj (1)To be enjoyable, usually in reference to a party. (2)to become excited and/or agitated. Primarily used in the Southern, United States.

I love Lil' Jon. (and Dirty South in general). I think the 'da dum. . " intro to "Get Low" is actually one of the Ying Yang Twins. "Get Low" is absolutely in my personal top five songs of the year.

What do people think about "Naggin'" by the Ying-Yang Twins. I think the lyrics have some depth that's not usually seen in Crunk.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:46 (twenty years ago) link

"Naggin'" is in my top 10 for the year. "Get Low" too I think. Have you heard "Naggin' Part 2: The Answer," where the ladies get their revenge, Sam? It's dope: "When you get home I'll be gone."

Ying Yangs Twins' album will make my top ten list for the year (at # 4 or 5 probably, behind David Banner's screwed and chopped version of Missisippi but ahead of Bubba Sparxxx), and "Naggin'" is not the best song on it -- "Haaangh" or however you spell it is. It's Frank Kogan's # ONE album of the year. Here's his review, which is great:

My own brief mini-review of the album (along with Lil Jon's and Youngbloodz' albums) is at the Licks link upthread.

yeah Chuck my review
will be on PopMatters soon
I love that disc too

but ultimately
too much similarity
knocked it off my list

Lil Scappy's Head Bussa is another great crunck track too.

i think the many great puns offered on this thread are themselves an argument in favor of the proliferation of "crunk"

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 18 December 2003 20:38 (twenty years ago) link

I will have to get the Ying Yang twins. Being a po' teacher who connects via dialup my new music acquisitions are few and depend largely on my lil' brother burning me shit.

Lately I've been rocking Obie Trice's album and The Love Below like Homer rocks Duff.

I love how Haikunym loves crunk rap *and* country. He's like my poetic twin!

chuck loves that stuff too,
as do all right-thinking folk
and the queen mother

my thesis has been
that country IS hip-hop now
but no one agrees

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 18 December 2003 23:03 (twenty years ago) link

Very dangerous point to make with amateur!st in the room, Haikunym.

Brief History Skeet: The term "Skeet" refers to an old Scandinavian word meaning "to shoot". It stands for a competitive target shooting sport that was invented in America in 1920
