The Juan MacLean (RFI)

I've been listening to my Six Finger Satillite cds quite a bit and have been curious about John McLean's new group/project.

I haven't heard either of the The Juan McLean singles, are they any count? Don't buy much vinyl anymore, so I haven't picked these up.

Do they play live or is it a studio group?

earlnash, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Two (i think) of the tracks are on the DFA singles CD if you don't want vinyl. The new one's not on there but it's quite good. It's all very electro if you didn't know. Worst thing the DFA has put out, actually, but still very good

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Black Dice take the cake for worst outfit on DFA.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I rather like the Juan McLean singles. Can't figure out why they've gotten the smallest portion of DFA hype.

johnny fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

They seem the least spectacular to me.. Black Dice are very charming

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm very fond of "You Can't Have It Both Ways" and "Give Me Every Little Thing," not so fond of "By The Time I Get to Venus."

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

you can't have it both ways is really great, i'm quite surprised by it, as ive been underwhelmed by much dfa stuff, this is the best track on the label i think

... (gareth), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Do they play live or is it just a production project between John McLean and the DFA?

earlnash, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

as far as i know the juan maclean have only played once in the u.s., at the show the dfa put on at the warsaw in brooklyn in april 2002. i think it was just juan with nancy whang (also in lcd soundsystem) adding synth/vox.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool, I was just curious and I couldn't find any info via google.

6FS was a really good live band, their drummer could play like a drummachine.

no offense but that's like a DFA commercial slogan of the future

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 26 March 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i will when i hear it! 'Give Me Every Little Thing' and 'You Can't Have It Both Ways' have been on frequent rotation a lot this year so far

stevem (blueski), Friday, 26 March 2004 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Give Me Every Little Thing but prefer By The Time I Get To Venus and You Can't Have It Both Ways. However I really hate Typing All Those Songs And Their Annoying Long Titles.

owenf, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 10:04 (twelve years ago)

no, it's merely excellent

Luigi Nono, le petit robot (seandalai), Wednesday, 2 October 2013 11:22 (twelve years ago)

Not sure if I'm really so into Nancy Whang's vocals these days...

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 12:21 (twelve years ago)

Especially since there's been so much great vocal house and pop dance music this year.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 12:22 (twelve years ago)

Yeah I'm not a fan of her voice at all, I actively dislike the Classixx song she appears on. She works well on Happy House because it's largely confined to soundbites that enhance the rest of the track ("you are so excellent", "launch meeee intooo spaaaaace") but most of her more song-based appearances don't really work for me.

That said, Tonight is probably my favourite Juan Mclean song, although she's heavily treated on that.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 13:58 (twelve years ago)

I'm so into her voice voice. I could listen to an album of Nancy Whang. The Classixx song wasn't really great imo. I think the lyrics to this one are pretty wack, but it's enjoyable listening.

how's life, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 14:17 (twelve years ago)

Sorry. I got the Classixx song "All You're Waiting For" confused with Juan Maclean's "You Are My Destiny".

how's life, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 14:22 (twelve years ago)

I like the Classixx joint and the other Juan track from this year a lot, not sure about this one. But I would be so down with a Nancy Whang album.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 16:26 (twelve years ago)

I like this a lot - the early 90s piano house vibe is awesome. Reminds me of Edward's World's "Soul Roots".

How dare you tarnish the reputation of Turturro's yodel (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 31 January 2014 17:48 (twelve years ago)

a) we don't know what you've got of these guys
b) Studio are not house music

it would be fun to answer your question otherwise!

i'm in love with this song. it combines a bunch of my favorite sounds right now... menacing EBM pulse, gritty/down and out guitars, mystic space vibes, sickly sweet synthpop, and it's fucking pretentious and bombastic. amazing.

He's only noticeable on a couple of tracks anyway iirc? Thought he was more distracting on the previous album (which I still love).

How are John (Juan? idk) and Nancy live? They're coming to town and I don't think it's just a DJ set (or else I wouldn't bother even thinking of going).

Tay-Tay Brooklynpants (Murgatroid), Monday, 10 November 2014 09:06 (eleven years ago)

It's almost certainly a DJ set; they haven't played live since Jerry died AFAIK, although Juan says he wants to get a new band together soon.

(I saw 'em touring Happy House with Holy Ghost as the rest of the band, and they were phenomenal. There's a killer 19-minute live version of HH on vimeo w/ Jerry & Eric Broucek (iirc) that you should totally watch.)

the incredible string gland (sic), Monday, 10 November 2014 09:25 (eleven years ago)

Two DJ sets.

the incredible string gland (sic), Monday, 10 November 2014 09:25 (eleven years ago)

Did Jerry Play on The Future Will Come at all? I'm thinking about the drum rolls all over a track like 'Tonight', and how they really add to the emotional drive of the song, and how some of the songs on this new one would have been improved here with similar attention to rhythm. I do like it, but it feels a bit by numbers.

Matt DC, Monday, 10 November 2014 11:19 (eleven years ago)

Jerry's on the title track and No Time, all other full-kit drumming is by Nick from HG!, inc Tonight. He's too busy co-writing and producing this one, so only drums on one track, with the HG touring drummer on a bunch.

the incredible string gland (sic), Monday, 10 November 2014 14:20 (eleven years ago)

'running back to you' is such a jam, it's like an even more spaced-out 'i can't go for that (no can do)'

A compilation of all the recent singles and a few new tracks is coming on September 20th. I kept thinking it was time for a new album (five years since In a Dream already!) and I guess this is the closest we're going to get for now.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 14:07 (six years ago)

Haven't kept up with their singles, must remedy (and can conveniently do so come September..)

willem, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 14:42 (six years ago)

the singles are all fuckin phenomenal

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 17:50 (six years ago)

all the recent singles and a few new tracks

it's not all the singles, which I know just because literally hours before that story published I was retagging mp3s to make two compilations on my ipod ("mid-period" and "late period"). I think the title track is the only collected one without Nancy on it though

how I break it down to an extent:

01. What Do You Feel Free About? [2018 single]
02. Zone Non Linear [2019 single]
03. You Are My Destiny [2013 single]
04. Get Down (With My Love) [2014 single]
05. Feel Like Movin' [2013 split single]
06. Quiet Magician [new]
07. Pressure Danger [new]
08. Can You Ever Really Know Somebody [2017 single]
09. The Brighter The Light [2017 single]

not included:

Mirembe [2017 split single - as "Juan"]
Sad To Think [2018 single]
Quantum Reach [2018 split single - Amy collab]
Panic In Fort Greene Park [2018 "solo" boogie EP]
- Fine Time
- Don't Stop For Nothing
- Everybody Clap
- Panic In Fort Greene Park
Just Once More [2018 "solo" disco single]
Time Out Of Joint [2019 split single A1]
Everywhere At Once [2019 split single A2]

(bolds are explicitly by The / don't have Nancy. also of late and of interest: 2016 3-track EP by "Juan MacLean's Peach Melba," and a 2017 4-track EP of cocktail-party house with Shit Robot as Autofac. which sounds more like a name you should use for clattering machine techno imo. he also mixed all of Shit Robot's last album, and played on or produced bits of it, including a Juan / Nancy / Poopbot joint)

another non-album single out next week, as a duo with Man Power called Juan Power - one of the b-sides is a remix of an otherwise unreleased track, so presumably there's more to come

New interview and streaming mix.

So I came home and had a flood of big releases, and a string of cancelled tour dates. It has been very surreal, having this music that’s mostly meant to be played in a club, be released. On the one hand you could say that it’s a bit of a waste. On the other hand, it’s all music I cared very deeply about, and the response has been phenomenal. So on the purest level, for me, it has been very gratifying actually.

I have a feeling next year will be even better. I’ve been having the best time in the studio, being super productive and generally making music that is very pure, entirely devoid of external pressures and considerations. I have also raised my intake of psychedelics quite a bit, which has been a huge help. It has been a very exciting time!

From that interview last July:

It has been very surreal, having this music that’s mostly meant to be played in a club, be released. On the one hand you could say that it’s a bit of a waste. On the other hand, it’s all music I cared very deeply about, and the response has been phenomenal.

The thread has failed to keep track of his stuff for two years, and he really was cranking it out ahead of the pandemic:

Jul 2019: Lone Dancer EP ("solo" disco-y sample-based) (beatport link - others are bandcamp)

another non-album single out next week, as a duo with Man Power called Juan Power - one of the b-sides is a remix of an otherwise unreleased track, so presumably there's more to come

They had another six tracks intended for two EPs to launch a proper label, and dropped them as one BC-exclusive LP at the start of lockdown:

Mar 2020: THE JUAN POWER LP by Juan Power ("limited to 1000 downloads")

May 2020: Manthony EP ("solo" synthy techno)

May 2020: Yearning To High ("solo" on Alone Together comp)

Jun 2020: Here In The Twilight EP (acid house with disco leanings)

Dec 2020: Disco Stallion (mogadon house on Correspondant label comp)

Mar 2021: Ritual Device ("my long form ambient LP ‘Ritual Device.’ Intended for journeying during altered states of consciousness or inducing them.")

Apr 2021: I Can't Explain EP:

(“I produced every track on this EP under the influence of some type of psychedelic, mostly LSD. They are long, linear tracks that were composed after weekends of head down dancing in dark clubs, meant to induce the type of trance that comes from repetition and a certain kind of moodiness. They also have a bit of old school House flavor to them, with the looping of mangled 1 bar Disco samples. Per usual with these kinds of tracks, they were in my DJ sets for a couple of years as I fine-tuned them, and I end up getting very attached to them, particularly when other DJ’s start asking about them, and then I get to a point where I actually don’t want them released! But when Man Power asked if he could release them on Me Me Me, I immediately agreed, as I knew they would be given a sort of care and support that would make me happy to have them released into the world, as opposed to feeling they would just be released into a black hole.”)

Apr 2021: Grit / Unanswered (deep house collab w/ Amtrac)

Apr 2021: Under Pressure ("solo" on Hand To Hand comp)
Apr 2021: Skies Open ("solo", as above)
Apr 2021: Chopper ("solo" on A Lot of Love comp)

plus remixes released just during the pandemic:

Mar 2020: Club Tularosa - Starlight Ceremony (Juan Maclean Remix)
Apr 2020: Birds Of Pandæmonium - The Night (Juan Maclean Remix)
May 2020: Man2.0 - In The Vacuum Of Noise (The Juan Maclean Remix) (youtube link)
Jun 2020: Ferrari - Talk (Juan MacLean Remix)
Jul 2020: The World Wild Web & Tritha - Prophet (The Juan MacLean Remix)
Jul 2020: Jac The Disco - Goddess (Juan Maclean Remix)
Aug 2020: New World - Enough! (The Juan MacLean Remix)
Oct 2020: Time To Sleep - Taramoto (The Juan Maclean Remix)
Mar 2021: Museum Level - Sultan Pepper (Juan MacLean remix)

got released in the pando as well:

Jun 2020: Are We Still Dreaming? one 12-in left for sale / soundcloud

or that he had another collabo duo:

Jul 2019: Longlost - Take 8

He also did a 2-hour "Psychedelic House, Techno and Ambient" radio mix to launch Ritual Device, which looks like it might now be a monthly thing:

Ritual Device with Juan MacLean @ The Lot Radio 03 - 29 - 2021

Ritual Device with Juan MacLean @ The Lot Radio 04 - 26 - 2021

did some nerdy sorting to see just how significantly (and steadily!) his rate of production has increased

2002-2004: 55 mins of singles, b-sides and compilation tracks
*2004: a 45-minute LP
2008: a half-hour EP
*2009: an hour-long LP (with a 13-minute single)
2010-14: an hour of singles, b-sides and compilation tracks
*2014: hour-long LP
2016-17: an hour of singles & EPs (under three names)
2018: an hour of singles, EP and comp track (under three names)
2019: 90 minutes of singles, EPs and comp tracks (under four names)
2020: 2 hours of singles, comp tracks, an EP and an LP (under three names) across ten months
2021: 2 hours over five releases under three names in thirty calendar days
