Iced Earth: Opinions

What are peoples opinions on Iced Earth. Personally, I love them. I am not a big metal fan for the most part, but I love what Iced Earth does. While the lyrics are portentious to the extreme at time, I think the musicianship is great. I love Matt Barlows voice, despite many people thinking he just screams. Moreover, I give them props for not turning into "nu-metal" over the years and keeping a sound that is pretty consistent from their first EP releases in the late 80's to 2001's 'Horror Show.' Would love to hear feedback...

I have Horror Show but haven't heard it yet. Have to say I like the idea behind it.

I love metal. But not Iced Earth.

I like Iron Maiden and Rush, but not Helloween and Voivod. Should I listen to these guys? I've noticed their covers are cool. What's a good album to start with?

I'd recommend buying their compilation, honestly... as for studio albums, Something Wicked THis Way Comes and The Dark Saga do it for me...

Nice album covers. Bad music.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 April 2005 17:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Haha, I used to love this band. I think I still might. Good old-fashioned Maiden-meets-Master of Puppets thrash with cheesy horror movie/D&D/comic book themes. No interest in their recent records, but Burnt Offerings and Night of the Stormrider are good.

Richard Christy is the best thing to happen to Howard Stern in like 5 years.

billstevejim, Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:37 (eighteen years ago) link

What does Richard Christy have to do with Howard Stern?!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, he's on the show pretty much everyday for starters.

billstevejim, Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:41 (eighteen years ago) link

I had no idea (probably because I don't actually listen to HS). This is the former drummer for Death we're talking about, right?

The new Iced Earth DVD is ghastly.

The new Iced Earth DVD is amazing.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Scott, are you serious? I love the Gettysburg song cycle, but everything that goes with it suXor. Did you watch the tour of the battlefield yet?

ng, Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:43 (eighteen years ago) link

The tour is great! Okay, I could only get thru, like 10 minutes of the tour. And I know what you mean by "ghastly". I guess i was just in the right silly mood for it. I mean, it IS kinda impressive. All those flags waving and pictures of generals. They are nuts. The same day that I got that in the mail i also got the new Molly Hatchet album and it came with an ACTUAL confederate flag. A lttle one with one of those plastic bases that you can stick on your dashboard. And all the tour dates on the back of the CD are in Germany...hmmmm... I am digging the new Demons & Wizards. That has some great stuff on it.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:55 (eighteen years ago) link

So does Howard Stern discuss Richard Christy's sick chops?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:57 (eighteen years ago) link

They discuss metal sometimes, but normally Richard is brought it for his porn expertise. He's quite a multi-talent, as he also has sick chops at prank phonecalls.

I know these d00ds have kinda sunken into mediocrity in recent years but they're supposed to be fun live and apparently they're playing the "Wicked" trilogy from SWTWC ("Prophecy", "Birth of the Wicked", "Coming Curse") on this tour so....i'm kinda stoked. plus Stu Block is a dope vocalist even if he's kinda imitating Matt Barlow in this band (and sounds more like himself in Into Eternity).

Jon Schaffer is a doofus though.

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 06:11 (six years ago) link

dear Christ, the versions of the trilogy they did with Ripper are fucking TERRIBLE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XN1WlkqxtK0

why the hell did they lower the key, he can hit higher notes than Barlow

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 06:15 (six years ago) link

fuck it, I'll defend these guys. p much haven't put out anything great in years, but even at their most self-plagiarizing they were often fun. Barlow kinda elevated em a bit. Ripper Owens era was terrible.

Horror Show is flawed but "Wolf", "Damien" and "Dracula" are fun.

last two w/ Stu Block kinda middling, his first (Dystopia) wasn't a classic but it was good!

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Monday, 12 March 2018 22:03 (six years ago) link

Weird I just listened to these guys for the first time since high school, just to see how it sounded now. Sure it's ridiculous music but Burnt Offerings and the Spawn one (lol) have really catchy hooks and cool riffs. Every now and then I'll click on the metal thread and check out some retro thrash thing on Bandcamp, and it's inevitably not as good? But I don't actually listen to metal beyond my 5 or so favorite albums from high school, so who cares what I think.

finally dug into the "Jon Schaffer's Purgatory" EP. it's fun, ignorant-assed heavy metal that sounds lyrically like it was written by 12 year olds doing a book report on horror films.

in other words, good mindless fun.

the weirdest thing - you know how sometimes there's this vocalist everybody clowns for being shit, then years later, he resurfaces, and suddenly he's improved a shit-ton?

Yeah, that is...not the case with Gene Adam.

As I walk through the blackened forest
Thoughts of hate and anger fill my soul
The charred remains of the holy rollers
Scream repentance though it's far too late

I fight back the laughter at what I see
The suffering healers false destined prophecy

He didn't think yesterday of the end of his life
The brainwashed fools born again of a thousand lies

lolllllll, i love this cheesy-assed band

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Friday, 11 December 2020 01:59 (three years ago) link

debut album just reissued/remixed/remastered.

for a remix, it doesn't sound toooo terribly different. was hoping maybe they mixed Gene Adam's voice with Mario Lanza or something. the guitars are still crunchy but tbh I always liked the original production.

i just love this cheesy-assed band and I won't apologize for it. Jon Schaffer's pretentiousness almost improves things cos you can't help but laugh at how cornball he is - yr a dude who learned how to play gallop patterns real well, nobody cares about your IRL opinions about commerce and government.

some real dire shit in the catalog. the Ripper albums were a huge wtf. never seen a guy with such a good voice completely suck everything interesting out of a band with a solid track record, TWICE.

seriously tho Gene is the worst singer ever, he makes Kai Hansen sound like Andrea Bocelli

Dumbass.

Speaking of, I meant to bump this thread last month when I saw that a, presumably very disappointed, former Iced Earth fan dumped damn near the band's entire catalog on CD at a local used shop.

From an ILX vet

In hindsight Iced Earth's problematic politics probably should've been obvious when Matt Barlow left to join the DHS and they replaced him with right-wing idiot Tim "Ripper" Owens. Also Schaffer's side project about how the Federal Reserve is evil.
