Is fucking beautiful. The opening track is the best song Jason Pierce never wrote. Expect soliliqiues on Stylus sometime soon.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 17 July 2003 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't wait to hear it - Saw them at the Scala last week and they were (as usual) fucking amazing, played about 50/50 old and new stuff, and the new stuff sounded magic, particularly one tune with a kind of slow gospel vocal with a baggy D&B beat behind it.
Not come across any album promo's yet, lots of single/4 tracks but no album....

Action Jackson, Thursday, 17 July 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"particularly one tune with a kind of slow gospel vocal with a baggy D&B beat behind it"

this sounds fucking awful!

elbow are my old flatmates borther's band, but i've never heard them, mind

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 17 July 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

someone who's taste i usually have a lot of faith in put 'newborn' on a tape for me recently. it's fucking terrible! self-important portentousness with nothing musically dramatic enough to justify it. it just sounds like dead music. is 'newborn' considered a good elbow track?

having said that i thought 'powder blue' was quite pretty but that was because it was understated and miniature, that music-box feel. overall though they just seem impossibly hard to care about.

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 17 July 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

oh is it avail on slsk?

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 17 July 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the new one is terrific, lightyears ahead of "asleep at the back." restrained and elegant and meaningful. one of my faves for the year so far.

the opening cut, "rib cage," is a good testbed; if you don't like that, you won't like the rest. me, i find it mesmerising.

Sean M (Sean M), Thursday, 17 July 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, it's all over slsk.

Simon H., Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Argh please no not the gospel choir!
The song was okay up until that point...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

:( Make it stop.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 17 July 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i loved "asleep in the back" but for some reason i've got a feeling this one will disappoint. i heard a new song by them at the witness festival - the video was played between onstage acts - and i don't think it made much impact (i was pretty drunk at the time, mind). i hope i'm wrong...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 17 July 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Track 5 is nice.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 July 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i refuse to believe there's a jason pierce song Jason pierce hasn't written, as all he writes are jason pierce-type songs.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 18 July 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Just listened all the way through. Pretty dull. Asleep at the Back, I liked much better.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 July 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Hungover this morning, everybody out, I played it VERY LOUD and it fitted my mood wonderfully.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 18 July 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

just didn't do it for me. maybe i'll listen somemore.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 July 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

nick, write a review and convince me otherwise! please!

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 July 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna do it over the next couple of days! Trust me. There's a line on my blog already.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 18 July 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

track 6 "not a job" is so beautiful.

Katja (blue), Friday, 18 July 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"Asleep At the Back" sounded like Peter Gabriel.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 18 July 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

That's not a compliment.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 18 July 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Asleep In The Back is 2/3s towards being a great record. Cast Of Thousands might be as much as 4/5s.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 18 July 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

switching off, almost made me cry. fucking a. brilliant.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 July 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Told you so, told you so, told you so!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 18 July 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I'm humming Depeche Mode.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 July 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I take it you're not an Elbow fan then Ned?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 18 July 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

What I've heard of them left me cold. I like all their influences to the point that I'd rather be listening to them instead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 July 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Struck me last night that I see them as the meeting point between Talk Talk and Pulp, which is (for me) a pretty wonderful and unique place to be.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 19 July 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, fuck it. Several listens in, including, just now, the business listen (with notepad and pen and scribbling); this is a beautiful record, carrying on from the debut album and improving on it. Incredibly accomplished and subtle, massively emotionally powerful and definitely one of my favourites of the year, jumping past Radiohead and standing next to Four Tet. I'm very very pleased with this.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 19 July 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

But...but...the gospel choir!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 19 July 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Struck me last night that I see them as the meeting point between Talk Talk and Pulp

Excellent description, Nick.

But is there a line as...soul-tugging as "I'm proud to be the one you hold/When the shakes begin"? Cos that still *gets* me every fuckin' time.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 19 July 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Powder Blue is one of the best songs ever, really one of the most beautiful, heartbreaking things I've ever heard. Guy Garvey's vocal is... man. Man oh man oh man. There are few better voices in British music today.

And yet I can't stand Newborn. And I've got Asleep in the Back yet never listened to it all the way through. I am trepidatious.

Recommend one off the newie to get me started please, cos I'm only on 56K.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 19 July 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

If ya like his voice, William, you'll probably like Mark Hollis's. And if you've heard his already, that's cool. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 July 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm with Melissa about gospel choirs. they should be wiped out of pop music

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 20 July 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I hear shilling off Pink Floyd and Radiohead, but it's not bad. C for originality, B+ for execution.

Shaun (shaun), Sunday, 20 July 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

William, download "Ribcage" or "Switching Off" or "Grace Under Pressure" from the new Elbow, and also go for "I Believe In You" by Talk Talk, which I think you might just like.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 20 July 2003 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Just download the Talk Talk, skip the Elbow!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Sunday, 20 July 2003 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'ts just occured to me - is there an anotomical theme to the new Elbow album?

Y'know, first track's called "Ribcage" an' all - are there tracks called "Duodenum" and "Coccyx" and "Femur" and suchlike? Hope so...

Humerus, no?

< bows >

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 20 July 2003 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

in that case it should have been called "gluteus maximus" instead. or perhaps just "arse"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 20 July 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I approached it with trepidation at first, but I've grown to love this album (having not heard Asleep at the Back, which I must now seek out).

But why has no one mentioned the several thousand people singing (in a rather muddled fashion) something like "I still believe in love, so fuck you" on "Grace Under Pressure"?

Simon H., Sunday, 20 July 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the several thousand people singing

That would be their entire audience at Glastonbury 2002, who were asked to sing those particular lines by Guy.

There's a section on the Elbow website where you can submit your name if you were one of those who sang - they were at one point aiming to credit as many singers as possible on the album sleeve, but I fear the fact that NME etc covered the idea will mean the project was derailed by microfame-hungry dicks who weren't even there :-(

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 20 July 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

switching off hits me like a ton of bricks. it makes me feel like my heart is broken, that sunken pain in the stomach feeling. And I like it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 July 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Just for you, hris, a paragraph from the forthcoming Stylus review by me;

"Closer to 45 minutes than an hour, Cast of Thousands is a less bloated record to take in than Elbow’s debut, Asleep in the Back but that’s not to say it’s any less intense. “Snooks (Progress report)” sees Garvey comparing his own life to those of his friends, whispering over a jerking rhythm before an awesome, bronchial guitar yowl punctures through to expose the jealousy beneath. “Switching Off” is exquisitely beautiful, heartbeat toms, a tambourine and an exhaling organ offering a skeletal backing for a freshly broken melody portraying a resigned love; “you the only sense / the world has ever made / early evening June / this room and a radio play / this I need to save / I choose my final scene today / switching off with you…” A disconsolate electric whirr heightens the impact, pricking forth tears and recognition."

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 21 July 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Brilliant, I say.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 July 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

To me "Switching Off" makes a great song for a breakup sex scene in a movie.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 July 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"I like all their influences to the point that I'd rather be listening to them instead."

I'm sorry to say this Ned, but You know you're getting old when........

I'm geting deeply into this album despite not being keen on "asleep in the back". Snooks is a great departure for them - pretty groovey - what the fuck is up with buttons and zips though? its TERRIBLE - it almost ruins the album for me.

jed (jed_e_3), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ribcage" and "Fallen Angel" are among the best songs I've heard this year.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

seconded - also "grace under pressure" and "snooks"

jed (jed_e_3), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

id love to hear someone use snooks in a mix - i reckon it would work well with some superpitcher or playhouse stuff. Mybe i should get off my arse and do the mix myself tho.

Thread revive, sort of.

Two days ago I had the misfortune of seeing Muse because my wife and I bought tickets for my god-son to see 'em. What a load of wank. But the good thing was that Elbow were supporting them and I'd not heard anything by them before so I was open minded and ready. The first song sounded like "SoE" era Talk Talk, only more 'legible' I suppose. That got me interested. By the third or fourth song I was really into it. Then they said that they loved us and this was their last number, and played a lovely growing monster of a song which I've been singing in my head ever since.

So off I went today and bought "Cast of thousands", played the first ten seconds of each song to see if I recognised it, and there was "Grace under pressure" at the end, being that growing monster song. So I'm happy now. Reading all the above comments means I can't wait to play the whole album now.

http://www.elbow.co.uk -> news :

On Monday 27th August elbow finally release the long mooted b-sides album: 'Dead In The Boot'.

Bringing together b-sides and hard to find non-album tracks from the band's lengthy recording career, the collection will be available on CD, vinyl album and digital download.

The release tells the alternative elbow story from the early years, with tracks like 'None One' from the original 'Newborn' EP in 2000, right up to 'Buffalo Ghosts' from last April's 'Open Arms' limited edition 10" vinyl single.

Here's the full tracklisting

1 'Whisper Grass' ('Fallen Angel' – V2 single release)
2 'Lucky With Disease' ('Newborn' – V2 single release)
3 'Lay Down Your Cross' ('Not A Job' – V2 CD Single)
4 'The Long War Shuffle' ('Leaders Of The Free World' – V2 CD Single)
5 'Every Bit The Little Girl' ('One Day Like This' – Fiction 7” single)
6 'Love Blown Down' ('Fugitive Motel' – V2 CD Single)
7 'None One' ('Newborn' – Uglyman CD EP)
8 'Lullaby' ('One Day Like This' – Fiction CD Single)
9 'Mcgreggor' ('Forget Myself' – V2 7” single)
10 'Buffalo Ghosts' ('Open Arms' – Fiction 10” Single)
11 'Waving From Windows' ('Grace Under Pressure' – V2 CD Single)
12 'Snowball' (From 'Help – A Day In The Life' – Warchild album release)
13 'Gentle As' ('Leaders Of The Free World' – V2 7” single)

"The band have always loved B-side land and this is a collection of our favourites. It was important to us that this collection be an album in its own right so for some fans it may seem like there are glaring omissions, but these songs are the ones that hung together perfectly." Guy Garvey - Elbow

StanM, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

Excited for this! I've missed out on a lot of the band's B-side material, so this will be much appreciated.

What's impressive is how they never seem to get any bad press ever

PaulTMA, Saturday, 29 March 2014 16:51 (twelve years ago)

Because they're not bad! Boring is very different from bad, because sometimes boring is good. But bad never is. "Impressive and boring" is both OTM summation and band approach.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 29 March 2014 16:56 (twelve years ago)

This album is working for me in ways the last two never did. Starting to really like it to the degree it might be my second favourite after LotFW.

What's strange is that it's ostensibly made up of the kinds of songs that made me find those last two records such a drag ...

Steve Reich In The Afternoon (Against The 80s), Saturday, 29 March 2014 17:13 (twelve years ago)

Their arrangements can appear to be pedestrian or midtempo, but they put more effort into writing stronger melodies and especially vocal melodies than Coldplay so they are constantly fluttering right around the bar of mediocrity/interest.

I like "Fly Boy Blue" but the rest of the record does seem quite boring, as did the last album. I have a lot of affection for the first four albums.

Simon H., Saturday, 29 March 2014 17:32 (twelve years ago)

Charming how their supporters don't really deny they are boring

Let your beige flag unfurl with pride, I guess

PaulTMA, Monday, 31 March 2014 17:41 (twelve years ago)

I'll third (fourth? fifth?) the OTMness of "impressive and boring", but I really love the new one and think it may end up being my favorite yet. Something about the tone this time just hits me right, though that ties into my theory about this band. Which is, in short, that the Elbow album you love the most probably comes whenever your personal meloncholy is most closely attuned to the band. If that makes sense...
