LONDON (Reuters) - British police arrested U.S. rock star Courtney Love at Heathrow Airport Tuesday after cabin crew said she had abused them during a trans-Atlantic flight.
Virgin Atlantic said the 38-year-old actress-singer, widow of rock band Nirvana's late singer Kurt Cobain, was detained following a disturbance on board its flight from Los Angeles.
An airline spokesman said Love, lead singer of the band Hole, had become disruptive and had verbally abused cabin crew during the flight, which had 200 passengers on board. No one was injured during the incident.
"She was having a row with one of the flight attendants," one woman passenger told reporters. "There were a lot of raised voices."
British police said Love, who was flying to Britain to attend an Elton John charity show Wednesday according to media reports, had refused to sit down and put on her seatbelt prompting the plane's captain to radio ahead shortly before the plane landed.
"We will not tolerate disruptive behavior by passengers on board any of our aircraft and always report it to the authorities. The matter is now in the hands of the police," the Virgin spokesman said.
Police were waiting for the flight when it arrived and after about 20 minutes Love, whose behavior has earned her a reputation as a hell-raiser, was escorted off and put into a police van.
Television footage showed the singer appear to stagger as she was led across the airport tarmac, while waving and smiling at photographers, despite the attempts of one police officer to cover her face with a scarf.
The woman passenger said Love had "looked out of it" as she was taken away. "She had bright red lipstick on which appeared smudged," she added.
Police said Love had been arrested for disruptive behavior and endangering an aircraft.
Love has been courting controversy recently, stripping for a naked photo shoot at a London hotel for Q Magazine's March issue that features pictures of her having her bikini line waxed.
Last week she phoned fashion designers in the middle of the night in a bid to find an outfit to wear to Elton John's show, according to newspaper reports.
Love is not the first rock star to have been accused of causing trouble on a trans-Atlantic flight.
Last year Peter Buck, guitarist with top-selling band R.E.M, was cleared of going on a drunken mid-air rampage and assaulting staff on a British Airways flight from Seattle.

erm, I hate Courtney (okay, "hate" in the sense that you might say you "love pizza" to paraphrase Daniel Clowes in "Why I Hate Christians"; I certainly don't want her to die or anything, and if I ever actually met her I'd probably be nice to her, so maybe I should stop contributing to these threads because I can see I'm being classed with the people who REALLY hate her, yeah yeah I'd better end this bit now) because she punched Kathleen Hanna, who I have a totally mad pash for. what does this make me?

i think that part of the courtney-hate is, along with the typical double-standard virgin/whore etc. stuff the fear of a woman who attempts to assert her sexuality in a power relationship.

But just for the record, I (rather embarassingly) must hew to the traditional indie-judgment that her first album is really the only one worth listening to. The abrasive shrieking and sloppiness and anger at least packs some visceral punch - "Good Sister/Bad Sister" being the best track on the album. "Live Through This" - eh, "Doll Parts" is okay, but mostly it sounds like sub-par Nirvana. The song-structures, the lyrics, the delivery, everything matches up to the oft-repeated rumors of Kurt-authorship. And released the day after his suicide - ewww, the creepiness factor of the record is very high, it's like she raped his corpse in public or something. I only heard the singles off "Celebrity Skin" and I thought they were appallingly bad... am I forgetting anything? That's about all I've heard. Her music wouldn't be quite so loathsome if it wasn't so hopelessly chained to her shameless, exploitative, completely stupid antics.

do you know anything about me and how i judge people? no. and since courtney love puts her personality so out there, her personality is there for me to judge as i would judge anyone i knew personally. i would judge any male musician in exactly the same way. me and my female friends have committed ourselves to changing the position of women in rock music, i'm even writing a fucking dissertation on it, so do your homework before you run around accusing feminist women of misogyny.
