ALHAMBRA, California -- Authorities in California say record producer Phil Spector has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a woman.
The Los Angeles County sheriff's department says the Hall of Fame music producer was arrested at a house early today in the Los Angeles suburb of Alhambra.
The woman's body was found at the scene.
In his legendary career, Spector has produced such music greats as Tina Turner and the Ramones.

1) Now that he's out on bail in less than 24 hours (which is ridiculous in itself), before trial, Spector flees to Brazil
2) Or after the trial, Spector flees to France (they won't extradite, especially if a person is facing the death penalty)
3) We can be assured of a drawn out expensive travesty of a trial that the people of California cannot afford to pay for
4) We can be assured the murder victim's reputation will be dragged through the mire while Spector is presented as merely mad as a hatter
5) Resulting most likely in a reduced manslaughter charge and he's out of the celebrity happy camp in less than six years.

But best to avoid even watching celebrity trials on court tv lest you become cynical too early on in life.
Blake and Spector haven't many options now. Snoop likely won't invite either of them to make pornographic movies any time soon. Maybe they'll just straighten up and start up a fashion line together for murderously rich L.A. male celebrities. BS is too hokey a name for people of this stature, maybe Off (as in off the hook but not pred-a-porte)
What's next now for troubled but talented Spector? Is he likely to enroll in Michael Hutchence chair dancing school?

(2/5/03, 7 a.m. ET) -- Phil Spector has been charged with the first-degree murder of B-movie actress Lana Clarkson, 40, of Los Angeles, who was allegedly shot and killed on Monday (February 3) at his mansion in Alhambra, California, an L.A. suburb.
The 62-year-old legendary record producer was arrested on Monday morning, then freed in the evening at $1 million bail. He faces arraignment on March 3 in an Alhambra court.
Police said they were called at about 5 a.m. by a limousine driver who reported hearing shots fired after he dropped off the couple at the gated estate. Officers arrived to find Clarkson shot, her body lying in the marble foyer of the mansion. She was pronounced dead and Spector was arrested.
Los Angeles County sheriff's investigators said Clarkson and Spector were the only people in the home at the time of the shooting. A gun was recovered on the scene, believed to be the murder weapon.
Clarkson's movie credits included producer Roger Corman's 1985 fantasy-adventure film, Barbarian Queen, which she had claimed inspired the popular TV series Xena, Warrior Princess. She also appeared in other pictures that includes 1988's Wizards Of The Lost Kingdom II and 1992's Barbarian Queen II: The Empress Strikes Back.
Spector is credited for creating the "wall of sound" and producing a slew of 1960s hits that include "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes, "Da Doo Ron Ron" by the Crystals, and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers; as well as the Beatles' Let It Be album and recordings by John Lennon, George Harrison, Cher, and the Ramones. In 1989, Spector was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. He received the Trustees Award from the Grammy Recording Academy in 2000 for his "significant contributions--other than performance--to the field of recording."
Known as a recluse, Spector bought the 33-room, castle-like mansion in 1998 for a reported $1.1 million. For many years, the music industry has been rife with tales of the famous producer allegedly brandishing firearms, even waving a pistol during recording sessions, including claims of such by members of the Ramones and the late John Lennon.
Attorney Robert Shapiro, once part of the legal team that defended O.J. Simpson against murder charges, is representing Spector.

"The most depressing, heinous thing. I mean, starting out life as a black man and ending up as a white woman, what's that all about?" Rap music? "Like the c got left off at the printers." Spector falls back on the sofa. "It's all been done! It's all been done!"

UH:
The week’s most dubious highlight came when the defense played Lana Unleashed, Clarkson’s portfolio video designed to showcase her comedic talents. Prosecutors Alan Jackson and Pat Dixon begged Fidler to block the screening but the judge ignored their pleas. The video quickly made clear why Clarkson did not have her own Comedy Central show. Her self-written sketches, intended to demonstrate Clarkson’s range of characterizations and dialects, appeared desperately unfunny on the courtroom screen. She was dying up there — all over again. It also became obvious why Spector’s lawyers fought to have the video shown. In one segment Clarkson performs a black-face impersonation of singer Little Richard selling a line of African-American cosmetics on TV. The sketch was nothing more than a coon show and seemed to drag on for hours as reporters kept an eye on the jury’s three black members, who watched with frozen expressions. (“Little Richard’s” cosmetic kit — called “Makeup Kit for Dummies” — included minibar bottles of liquor and plastic pieces of a black man’s face.)

I think because it fit the defense argument that she shot herself in a desperate attempt to bring attention to her failing career. Focusing on a terrible audition reel would make sense if you think she was so unfunny she would have needed an insane stunt to raise her stock up. And if you ignore the forensic evidence.

Phil Spector's Murder Trial Declared Mistrial
After about five months of testimony, the trial of legendary "Wall of Sound" producer Phil Spector ended in a mistrial today, September 26, according to an AP report.
Spector is charged with second-degree murder for the gun death of actress Lana Clarkson four-and-a-half years ago, but Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler declared the case a mistrial after each juror told him they were unable to reach a verdict.
Fidler made the decision on the 12th day of deliberations, and the foreman of the nine-man, three-woman jury revealed that there was a 10-2 deadlock without specifying which way they were leaning.
So far, there has been no talk of a retrial.
Also related to the trial-- though apparently not factoring into the decision to declare a mistrial-- is authorities' investigation into a possible threat to Fidler made via a post to a "Team Spector" MySpace page.
The post said, "I love Phil Spector" and "The Evil Judge should DIE!!!!." It was signed "xoxo Chelle"-- a reference to Spector's wife Rachelle-- and later taken down, according to Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini.
Christopher Plourd, one of Spector's defense attorneys, denied Rachelle Spector's involvement in the incident.
A few weeks ago, Fidler and Rachelle Spector clashed over her communication with the media about the case outside of court, according to a Los Angeles Times report.

Spector's defense - that she was drunk and depressed, took his gun (after it got his prints on it), and shot herself in the face - is a little um wtf. Especially given that immediately afterwards he wandered outside, gun in hand, and said to his driver "I think I killed somebody". Plus a history of being an abusive mysoginistic loon and habit of threatening all kinds of people with firearms... yeah I think the guy is guilty as fuck. so to speak.

It's like I should feel sadness or pity about this entire tragedy, but we always knew that Spector was nuts so the fact that his stupid habits finally led to someone's death isn't much of a surprise. It feels like nothing has really changed, and therefore I don't feel much of anything at all about this.

Rachelle Spector was very relieved to see her husband transferred out of North Kern State Prison where she complained that Spector was being abused. She even wrote a letter to prison officials about the alleged abuse in which she detailed how he was forced to sleep naked on the floor for two nights and to eat out of a bowl with his hands "like a dog."
That's really not how most dogs eat.

do people think his incarceration will mean that we won't get nice remastered/repackaged collections of his material ever? i mean, it was taking long enough even before he killed a woman.
wow, that sounds callous. sorry.
but as everyone knows there are tons of p.s. productions (even from the mid-60s heyday) that have never seen official rerelease. and the mastering from that early 1990s box set leaves much to be desired. i should probably be collecting original philles 45s but, you know, life is short and stuff.
― figuratively, but in a very real way (amateurist), Sunday, 7 February 2010 03:10 (fourteen years ago) link
dunno, i kind of imagine once Phil shuffles off this mortal coil, the stigma of his (admittedly horrible) personality/life will be lessened and there'll be a good overview of his stuff. a lot of what was wonderful about so-called Spector music was the result of a lot of different factors/musicians/arrangers, rather than being the result of one mastermind. it'd be a shame if all of that was lost imo.

Legendary music producer and convicted killer Phil Spector has produced his first recording project from behind bars. The project is the debut CD for his wife Rachelle Spector.Titled "Out of My Chelle," the disc features 10 tracks of upbeat, mainstream adult pop, with hints of R&B, rock and dance. The man known for the "Wall of Sound" technique said of his wife, "I trusted her with my life and songs and production. She's fantastic on this album," Spector said in a statement.

The footage of him in the 70's at that pool table is amazing. Where is that from? I want to see the whole thing.

The Mamet penned and directed movie about the trial, starring Al Pacino, Helen Mirren and Jeffrey Tambor.

I disagree. It's not spot on, but it's an approximation of his voice from the 2000s. Certainly doesn't sound like his voice on the Christmas albums, yeah.

Kinda amusing in light of recent events that at 1:02 there's a sign that says GUN CONTROL NOW and at 1:04 "From Writer & Director David Mamet."

Eh, still sounds like 70% Pacino and, I dunno, less than 30% Spector.

David Mamet might be crazier than Spector at this point. At least Spector likely knows that he shot her.

"Mamet, the writer, has publicly stated that he feels Phil Spector is innocent and should not be in prison," says spokesman Ed Lozzi. "We fear that he will rewrite history and portray Lana Clarkson as responsible for her own death. That is not acceptable, and if he does so, there will be consequences from us."
What, are you going to shoot him then?

One ILM poster friend of mine has noted previously that Mamet has an uncommon talent for finding ways to justify women getting slapped around in his movies/plays.
Nah, that's not true, but he does have a good half-dozen scripts with false rape accusations, and this story is a variation on that.
That said, I liked it. Lots of Pacino time.

Really? Two that come to mind off the top of my head:
The Verdict -- Charlotte Rampling gets "justifiably" slapped in a restaurant.
Oleana -- Bill Macy beats the crap out of the woman who falsely accuses him of rape.
Pretty sure there are others...
