ILM's 2022 End of Year Tracks & Albums Poll / VOTING THREAD

Here we go!

Go here to vote: https://forms.gle/r3QsS9HG6vk2ShDP6

Voting ends at MIDNIGHT PST on Friday, January 20th, 2022.

The procedure is simple: enter your tracks and album ballots (up to 25 items on each), one item per line, in the appropriate fields below. Please copy each line directly from the nominations list; do not number your ballot.

You can choose one of three ballot types, which determine how points are allocated to each item you vote for:

(1) Weighted: The first item on your ballot receives 50 points, the second receives 48 points, and so on, until the 25th item receives 2 points.

(2) Unweighted: Each item on your ballot receives 26 points.

(3) Mixed: To submit a mixed ballot, you must divide your ballot in two with an extra blank line. The upper portion of the ballot will be treated as weighted, with the first item receiving 50 points, and so on. The lower portion will be treated as unweighted, in that all items will receive the same number of points. The score allocated to items in the unweighted portion is calculated as 26 minus the number of items in the weighted portion (this is so that any weighted, unweighted or mixed ballot consisting of 25 items will allocate a total of exactly 650 points).

Is this the first year where M.I.A. has released an album and ilm completely ignored it? Granted, she flushed all remaining good will she had in 2022, but there are usually some reliable "art not artist" nominators. lol

If this is allowed to be a campaigning thread, I hope that everyone placing Beyonce's house album on their lists also find it in their souls to give a slow (even a lower one) to Kerri Chandler's first full length LP in a very long time.

عباس کیارستمی (Eric H.), Monday, 2 January 2023 15:23 (one year ago) link

That seems to imply that Beyoncé and Kerri Chandler have something in common, or that people who don't also listen to Kerri Chandler are choosing Beyoncé as their token house pick. Obviously I'm not discouraging anyone here, it sounds like a gentle offer, but also like a conditionality, and what's next ? Only vote for Björk's album if you've heard other gabber albums, Rosalía if you're deeply versed in any genre she brushes, or the Beatles if you're versed in Indian classical lol ?

Probably it's a non-debate by now though and not really worth discussing, so ignore my attempt to stir and happy voting everyone.

xp lol the noms start at the same time every year and the voting starts at the same time every year and the rollout starts at more or less the same time every year, and it's all been that way since at least 2010 and maybe before that

xps The MIA album being ok and better than her previous one (I'd be very surprised if that one was discussed the end of that year) doesn't mean it's anything approaching AOTY.

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 2 January 2023 15:56 (one year ago) link

Yeah, but out of 1100 tracks nominated she got zero. We usually see her get nominated even if she's bad. It's the ilm way. Or was.

Please don't register this as me complaining. I'm not. Just observing.

Remember a couple years ago when we all loved the Weird Al album and yet no one remembers to nom it?

(Not that this is at all the same thing)

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 2 January 2023 16:22 (one year ago) link

And as I say too often, there’s simply TOO MUCH MUSIC and stuff will inevitably be forgotten. I’m sure that all the LP and track noms cover barely a fraction of music released last year.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 2 January 2023 16:24 (one year ago) link

I don't have any trouble grasping that there are 1100 better songs from 2022 than the passable "Beep". But point taken.

~sorry to spam this thread i will stop just tell me stfu~

biggest revelation from today's listening is that tops are fucking excellent. i saw them open for king krule years ago and they were good! i didn't have enough money to visit their merch table and subsequently forgot about them in the shuffle of my brain. but they're still around and their more recent material is great.

i'd rather do music and chill tf out (Austin), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 01:49 (one year ago) link

The Amen break is evergreen, it's never gone away, that doesn't phase me. I did note a whole lot of '90s house influence though, so many Korg M1 organs.

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 04:50 (one year ago) link

campaign in here. go for it. i will be.

I nearly nominated another Aquarian track that would've upped the Amen further.

It's 303s that have seemed like the biggest revival to me in recent years tho.

nashwan, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 12:23 (one year ago) link

also nearly nominated Tops - 'Future Waits' just missed my cut.

nashwan, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 12:24 (one year ago) link

I had heard that Tops song a while back but forgot about it; will have to vote for it now. Vaguely reminds me of some of the longer Belle & Sebastian tracks like "Your Cover's Blown."

Chris L, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 13:10 (one year ago) link

It might be gauche to promote a jokey song from a TV show but I nominated "Rock Your Boy's Body" from Righteous Gemstones. When I heard it at the end of its episode I wondered what was this deranged, moody pop song they found and subsequently found out it was written by Edi Patterson in the voice of her unhinged character on the show. The whispered "Hungry like a monkey/pussy gonna take a bite" has been popping up in my head for about a year.

Chris L, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 13:17 (one year ago) link

2022 probably marked the start of a new golden era of girl groups in K-pop, artistically and commercially, so I hope we finally get some K-pop back in the top 77. For one of the most popular scenes in pop it's been absent on this poll for years.

NewJeans might be the best situated with their effortless cool and earwormy soundbites -- Hype Boy was the highlight of the year for a long time for me, but the vibe-y, arresting late release Ditto may have matched it.

Another contender is Le Sserafim's playful reggaeton-inspired Antifragile . Another group debuting in 2022 to immediate popularity.

abcfsk, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 13:26 (one year ago) link

The other track I'll single out is "Love Farewell" by Jake Xerxes Fussell. My joking description of him is he's like the NYRB Classics of folk music in that he finds and revamps forgotten songs of the past in spiffy new editions. The whole album is good as usual but this one gradually revealed itself as the prettiest and most soothing tune I heard all year. Features background vocals by Will Oldham.

Chris L, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 13:41 (one year ago) link

OK, one more: "Kraut" by Lady Aicha & Pisko Cranes Original Fulu Mziki of Kinsasha is the most slamming song I've heard in a while. You'll be fired up and sending emails like a motherfucker when you hear this.

Chris L, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 14:04 (one year ago) link

Yah "Kraut" is the standout on that album and is incredible. Many thanks to morrisp for the Momma noms. Heavy Yuck vibes, which is very my thing.

Indexed, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 14:53 (one year ago) link

thanks Chris, I don't think i noticed that Gemstones song at the time. But if we couldn't get "Misbehavin'" to place in 2019, well ...

maf you one two (maffew12), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 14:53 (one year ago) link

My big discovery from EOY season was "Los Aparatos" by El Alfa.
The fact that they didn't do the video as an Animaniacs-style cartoon adventure is a huge missed opportunity IMO. But regardless, this one has been stuck in my head for weeks.

enochroot, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 14:55 (one year ago) link

ty chris! paying special attention to those!

as for me, i picked up the shuffle where i left off yesterday afternoon and the first track was this george clanton remix of vitesse x's "us ephemeral" and holy fucken FUCK i just played it three times in a row! wasn't going to do a weighted ballot, but i might have to now.

(and yet _another_ amen sample!)

i'd rather do music and chill tf out (Austin), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 14:57 (one year ago) link

People should give k-pop one more chance this year. I agree on Ditto: I heard the hype about NewJeans, but the first few songs I listened to didn't do much for me. Ditto, though, is wonderful. K-pop song of the year is Red Velvet - Feel My Rhythm for me, though, which uses a classical sample absolutely amazingly.

2022 was won by Nigeria, though, and even though Naija-pop isn't traditionally thought of as album-music, there were great long-plays from Rema, Cruel Santino and (especially) Asake this year.

Also campaigning a bit for Denmark: It was on sean's list of best tracks, it's another great sample, Gilli - Baiana. Same sample was used in two British songs this year, by Nia Archive and Hazey, but I think Gilli (and Nicki Pooyandeh, the producer who produces at least 25% of Danish hip hop hits in any given year) got there first.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 16:10 (one year ago) link

That Tops EP sounds like indie Steely Dan x Cyndi Lauper or something.

Oh “in this world” by mondo grosso is great too! I think I’ve liked most of what I’ve heard today.

I’ve been thinking listening today at the playlist. Since plug.dj and outloud and turntable.fm are dead and I loved listening to what other ilxors were throwing: would there be interest in doing some sort of ongoing collaborative playlists? One for 2023 and one without year restrictions?

no idea which asake track to vote for because the three nominated are all great. bad bunny has too many to choose between too

NewJeans - Ditto - this has already been extensively hyped up but it's so good! dreamy baltimore club-tinged r&b, riyl erika de casier's "intimate (club mix)" and janet jackson's "empty"
Red Velvet - Feel My Rhythm - k-pop's best girl group finally did it again with their best single since "red flavor"
Black K ft. Didi B & 3xdavs - Chérie Coco - ivorian trap with all the trademark energy of ivorian pop (if people remember "akrakabo")
PinkPantheress ft. WILLOW - Where you are - paramore-sampling emo/2-step fusion
Jim Legxacy - dj - another on the emo/club fusion train but from a different angle, with vaguely afrobeats & jersey-club tinged beats

as for further lobbying: I did a deep dive on NIKI's Nicole album in the Rolling Pop thread (the whole thing's really good!); but if you check out just one track, make it the one I nominated:

NIKI - High School in Jakarta

It's my favorite pop track in a few years... really fresh & distinctive; not trying to be "cool," but instead almost emo-pop in its heart-on-sleeve, literate cleverness.

I'll stan for a couple country entries:

Kaitlin Butts - "Blood", co-written with Angaleena Presley of the Pistol Annies. A brooding rumination on the bonds -- good and bad -- of family. Sung with abandon, the final chorus cuts me to pieces.

Zach Bryan's American Heartbreak

Male country acts don't have much of a (any?) track record around here, but this is worth consideration. My thoughts in the Country thread here. dow also gave it some praise here. It was also Jon Caramanica's AOTY; words here.

Per usual, I'm not one for tracks— just not my thing any longer— but one album I'd really like to stan is Binker Golding's Dream Like a Dogwood Wild Boy. It's best described as early-to-mid 70s Keith Jarrett fusion with hints of American AOR like Bruce Hornsby and the Range, some roots influence too. The tracks worm their way into one's brain in the best way, it is a real *pleasurable* album to listen to.

Hope you can check some out.. Now onto voting!

some of the albums i nominated, check these out if these descriptions appeal to you

chat pile - god's country : obnoxious noise rock
dany placard & julie doiron - julie & dany : married couple's pandemic album, ramshackle folky rock
horace andy - midnight rockers : just solid old-school reggae album with a killer massive attack cover
mike adams at his honest weight - graphic blandishment : straight-up midwestern power-pop, RIYL sloan
mj lenderman - boat songs : kinda no alternative style twang-indie which isn't usually my thing but it has good lyrics and fuzzy guitars and an old-school homemade/DIY feel that is catnip to me
sexual jeremy - the real sexual jeremy : more noise rock but weirder/more experimental, has kind of a u.s. maple vibe to the instrumentals

many artists might not make it high or into the top 77 at all due to vote splitting by the looks of it.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, January 4, 2023 6:40 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

You could consider it an achievement in itself to get points for different tracks in a single year, that's something we could seriously count (for example top 10 artists, adding up all track votes). In the end I'm not a fan of the idea of artificially reducing a consistent album with various highlights to a one-track "critics" pick, that's BS. Imo, the track vote is also to see how differently some of the best albums resonated at personal level. And sometimes, several tracks really deserve a vote.

To add a controversial opinion, another phenomenon that contributes to vote splitting is also how wide and hopeful ILM is to get very niche picks represented and to produce the hidden gem. As we say in French, we're all "pulling the blanket", meaning something common is torn apart by personal interests.

Nabozo, Thursday, 5 January 2023 07:30 (one year ago) link

I guess it's also a question of how much overlap you're prepare to see between the album poll and the track poll. For me it's natural to see a lot, but some might see them as two unconnected hemispheres of music.

As for albums, BAD MODE is unbelievably one of Hikaru Utada's best in a legendary career - just funky, funny, sweet, beautiful, human. What a joy and a surprise that she would put out a masterpiece in 2022. And a great starter for anyone who hasn't checked out the discography.

One of my favourite discoveries of the year is Double Virgo - theyre Dean Blunt affiliated (on his World Music label). They have a darkly narcotic late night indie strum vibe. Actual information about them is thin on the ground but I loved their album 'Foolish Narratives' and their NTS mix which is worth a listen on Youtube too. I nominated this on the tracks poll. So dead eyed and malevolent. Love it

Even better is this track which I also nominated. Its from their side project bar italia (basically Double Virgo and a female singer). Reminds me of stuff like Insides or Woodbine

The pancakes, the Playplace
Grimace's Face
Doo, doo, do, doo, do

I'm stopping just short of pasting the album description from https://shabasonandkrgovich.bandcamp.com/album/at-scaramouche which is one of my favourite things about this. Picked it up on vinyl in the big city last week and was a little let down this wasn't part of the package lol

some pitches:

Mabe Fratti - Se Ve Desde Aquí: I'm just catching up with JF and Nabozo and everyone else who was repping Mabe Fratti in previous polls. This album is really excellent. Singer/composer/cellist who writes knotty but inviting song arrangements...the lazy Julia Holter comparisons write themselves. I mean it as a huge compliment though!
Cheba Wahida - Jrouli: dream raï, twirlers and bangers

Hyolyn - Over you: a better CRJ song than anything CRJ released this year
Javiera Mena - Sombra: ridiculous Italo stomper complete with lion sound effects and unnecessary guitars; Radiorama would be proud

As is my yearly process, I'm trying to thoroughly listen (at least three times per track) to everything in the singles pile. With past faves included, I'm about 320 tracks in. I'll likely try to do capsule reviews as in past years if there's time. Suffice it to say, lots to like.

Oh, and it's worth mentioning Joseph Shabason's connection to Destroyer, having been the sax player on "Kaputt."

Chris L, Friday, 6 January 2023 05:49 (one year ago) link

for anyone seeking a novelty track: am i the only person who enjoyed the Finneas/Billie Eilish tracks from the Pixar period piece Turning Red? They ghostwrote songs for a fake Backstreet-style boy band named 4*Town (with 5 members of course) and there's a few solid hits on the soundtrack. This is the obvious stand-out.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQQRjFzB8gY

At Thanksgiving, an extended family member mentioned that those songs were done by Eilish & Finneas… I said, “I don’t think that’s right!,” like a condescending know-it-all. Then I looked it up. Egg on my face!

Some brief campaigning for some of my noms (the ones that I think would have more mass ILM appeal):

Nikki Nair - Renormalization Support Group
Some of these EP tracks on are in the tracks poll too, I think this is the best possibility for a consensus dance pick that's not mired in '90s traditionalism. It's definitely got one foot in dance music history and electro-ish energy, but with so much fun inventiveness.

Hudson Mohawke - Cry Sugar
Similarly, this is Hud Mo's dance record and I think it's wildly underrated.

DOMi & JD Beck - NOT TiGHT
While admittedly I haven't gone back to it as much as their videos (which says something about their appeal and place in the social media-based instrumentalist world), I think this may come to be viewed as a sort of landmark record, as one of the most mainstream releases so far by the new generation of 'jazz' musicians who were both born of the Youtube algorithm and came to prominence through it. Also I can't overstate how great and influential JD Beck is for a 19 year old.

DJ Plead - Quick EP
Another hugely appealing collection of leftfield dance tracks, continuing to iterate on his darbuka/percussion sample-based style.

Tony Rolando - Breakin' is a Memory
Beau Sorenson - Indifference Will Devour You

Two 'ambient' electronic records where each track is totally distinct and engaging.

And for new discoveries, I'm really enjoying Lucretia Dalt (very unique and beguiling record) and Carla Dal Forno (Peaking Lights-ish minimal Aussie dub), and Ezra Furman.

Also will be voting for the Florist record. It's gotten a ton of play on weekend mornings, and even though I can't remember a single song from it, I keep coming back to the sound (weirdly the Shlohmo-esque instrumental interludes stay in my head more than the songs, or maybe that's not weird for me).

I was so tempted to skip the playlist this year (just due to laziness) and fill my ballot with all The Beths and Real Lies tracks nominated, but I'm really glad I didn't as I've found some great stuff on here.

The Shabason & Krgovich album is indeed fantastic. Listened to it last night and ordered it immediately. Kind of feels like it might fill the Rhye shaped hole in my collection as I'm unable to enjoy them anymore.

I missed the TOPS discussion earlier. I've listened to three of their albums I think and they were all just totally pleasant. Perfected Steps is the best thing I've heard from them by some distance.

I need to find out more about Honey. They had a song on nominated last year called Somebody To which ended up going in my top ten. What Now is another winner. I need an album by these guys if all their songs are this good. Kind of reminds me of Louise Burns who has a few supporters on here.

I need to hear the Perfume album before voting. The tracks on the playlist are incredible, especially Spinning World.

Sombra by Javiera Mena was another standout. I was really disappointed with her previous album so didn't even check her new one yet.

Other new discoveries include:

Sevyn Streeter - 23
Mondo Grosso - In This World
ExWHYZ - Wanna Dance
Between Mermaids & Me - Dreamwalker (amazing production on this)
Hourglavss - Cool Reaction
Raye - Escapism (this really clicked with me)
Ado - New Genesis

Thanks to everyone who nominated these and kept up with new music more than I did last year.

I hadn't been keeping up with Sevyn Streeter's material at all. I didn't even know she'd put out a second album. Girl Disrupted was a bit underwhelming considering how great some of the earlier singles had been. 23 rivals It Won't Stop as her best moment.

kitchen person, Sunday, 8 January 2023 04:43 (one year ago) link

ok so here's some rap music that i will likely be voting for.

ka - "ascension": a meditation on escaping generational trauma with an instrumental philip glass would be proud of. call it ka-yaanisqatsi.

duke deuce - "just say that ft. glorilla": the most fun rap song of the year, just a ridiculous and bombastic banger. ilx thread here: Duke Deuce & GloRilla's JUST SAY THAT is the best song in the world right now

veeze - "let it fly": somnambulant flexes and piercing barbs over an immersive michigan instrumental

Just revisited this and it has jumped up my list a lot. What a gorgeous album.

I noticed that on the album nomination sheet, there's a Hatchie album titled "Keep Giving The World Away" and one titled "Giving the World Away". I just voted for the latter, as I think that's the official titled.

Looks like that was me who got the Hatchie title wrong on the nominations thread. It is indeed just called Giving the World Away. Amazing album.

kitchen person, Monday, 9 January 2023 01:58 (one year ago) link

I might as well copy/paste (with slight tinkering) what I wrote in the 2022 AOTY thread and re-highlight a few of my nominations:

Lady Wray - Piece Of Me - Nicole Wray of "Make It Hot" fame continues what she started with the Lady s/t in 2013 and her own album Queen Alone in 2016 - comforting, warm, accomplished soul. The title track is probably my favourite.

Eliza and the Delusionals - Now And Then - I started a thread for this and unfortunately it's still sitting there with no replies, but despite that silence I am continuing my attempts to spread the good word about this debut from these Australian nostalgists. Widescreen dreampop that takes the Sixpence None The Richer sound and runs with it, as many others have this year - Hatchie, the Pale Waves, Soccer Mommy, etc etc. I'll be throwing lots of points at "Give You Everything" which I managed to push through on the Singles Jukebox's recent brief revival.

Say She She - Prism - This album sits at the intersection of a host of ILM vectors - Lady Wray herself might be one, but also Natalie Prass, the Kings (We Are and Emily), Kadhja Bonet, that short-lived band Juce, Esperanza Spalding's "Unconditional Love", etc. Their band name is horrible (it doesn't help either that it's very easily confused with another group who released an album this year, Say Sue Me) and the album is on the short side, but it's lovely to listen to and hard to fault.

RENforshort - dear amelia is a good encapsulation of the best of the 2022 surly pop punk revival for me. More Billie Eilish than that WILLOW album but it's somewhere between those two poles.

Then there's Javiera Mena - Nocturna. It has the feel of a compilation as I'd previously rinsed so many of its component tracks, some of which were released years ago, but at the same time I wouldn't begrudge anyone calling it her best album and if pushed I might give it that description myself. A banger-a-thon that concludes with the song she tried to enter Eurovision with and its spooky-ooky organ solo. seandalai has highlighted "Sombra" and its roars, but that's merely one of its multitude of joys.

I misspelled a nom "Shabason & Kgrovich" - should be Krgovich.

Doing a very rough draft. I'll be a last minute voter!

As far as tracks go, I hope to see "B.O.T.A." by Eliza Rose and Interplanetary Criminal in the 77. The strangest and best UK #1 of the year (thanks, TikTok), it initially struck me as icy and detached but somehow its ubiquity has lent it warmth and allowed me to classify it along with "Both Of Us", "Itgehane" et al.

Speaking of UK #1s, Raye's "Escapism." hit that mark in the UK a few days ago. Raye's a wunderkind who's been stuck writing and singing dance tracks for Jax Jones and Joel Corry types for years, but like so many other young pop singers has been at war with her label (in this case, Polydor) when it came to releasing her own material. She and Polydor parted ways last year, and she's been independently readying singles for her debut album, now due in about a month's time, since then. The clock app cottoned on to the sprawling, majestic "Escapism.", it's now a chart topper, and the album itself has become one of my most anticipated for this year. One can only hope that earlier single "Black Mascara", which has a dance throb and which I'm likelier to vote for, might get the same chart treatment.

It looks like my ballot might be quite heavy on Spanish-language pop tracks this year - some that are worth your time beyond the obvious Bad Bunny and Rosalía hits include Karol G's "PROVENZA" (with 596m Youtube views, this might be plenty obvious too), Kali Uchis' airy "NO HAY LEY", and Girl Ultra's "Amores de droga" (technically a 2021 single but I've nominated it under a year of impact rule as it was part of her 2022 EP EL SUR).

Finally, I expect to be a sole #1 this year with Empress Of's "Dance For You", which is possessed of just the kind of desperate melancholia I find irresistible in pop. A BJ Burton (who's worked with everyone from Charli XCX to Bon Iver to Lizzo to Low) co-effort, it's more conventional than the spacious and also very good "Save Me" which I see is in the queue for blurbing in the Tim F '22 thread. I love the shuffling beat, and the writing is curious too - she walks this tightrope of wanting her addressee to erase her from their memory, but also to be left with the impression that she exists, and is a person with feelings and emotions and strength. The whole EP that this is a part of is worth your time.

Oh, another album I should say something about because I haven't heard it written about basically anywhere else is Sara Parkman - Eros Agape Philia which is this amazing, extremely ambitious Swedish prog-pop-folk edifice that, to put things crudely, kind of bridges a gap between Fossora and Ten Love Songs. Lots of magic moments on it, but a favourite of mine in particular is about two-thirds of the way through "Till Salka", where a nostalgically-recounted story suddenly turns into a blaring rave-up.

Nosaj Thing - Blue Hour feat. Julianna Barwick is the biggest find in the noms for me so far. The emotional pull of Barwick's ethereal vocals is not something I might normally go for, but am sucked into the cinematic quality of the track. Massive Attack 'Teardrop' drums with melancholy synth-lines and sub-bass that invokes shimmering horizons of heatwaves and transit spaces like an air-conditioned airport terminal.

A bit late I realise, but I thought I'd campaign for my LP nominees that aren't on Spotify (and I think are only on Bandcamp). I've added links to the albums below and also done a mini bndcmpr.co playlist, which you can find here:
https://bndcmpr.co/80941c71

The Pattern Forms - 'The Scenic Route'
This studio group is made up of Cate Brooks (The Advisory Circle), Ed and Edd from Friendly Fires, and Tom Moth. A modern day library/mood music album, focussing on pastoral and romantic themes (with a Lindstrøm-esque tune to finish). Harp, analogue synthesisers plus drums, guitar textures and orchestral elements. First released digitally in May 2021, but the year of impact was definitely last year when the vinyl edition arrived.
https://thepatternforms.bandcamp.com/album/the-scenic-route

clocolan - 'Empathy Alpha'
Part soundtrack, part audio play, the LP contains five discrete cinematic scenes with electronic backing and interludes. Structured on a 9x9x9 numerical matrix, the music is inspired by sci-fi soundtracks of the 70s and 80s. Some excellent voice acting creates some really disturbing moments.
https://clocolan.bandcamp.com/album/empathy-alpha

D. Rothon - 'East Of The Sun' EP
Recorded live at Café OTO on 15 January 2022 as part of a Clay Pipe Music showcase night. Four serene pieces that particularly glow when Rothon's pedal steel takes centre stage.
https://lonesomedepot.bandcamp.com/album/east-of-the-sun-live-at-cafe-oto

Onepointwo - 'Music For Spaces'
Electronic music from a Greek musician I really rate. This album is described as "a personal homage to our endless effort to create personal spaces in order to decompress from the madness of everyday life. Created with a lot of electronic genres in mind".
https://onepointwo.bandcamp.com/album/music-for-spaces

Henning Zinoviev & Floating Candles - 'Die Nude For Satan'
One of those imaginary soundtracks to an alleged lost exploitation/horror movie from the 70s, the master tapes for which were recently "rediscovered". Bad-trip psych heaviness and folk horror, electric sitar/tabla and sinister synths. One of the more effective stabs at this genre in my opinion.
https://libraryoftheoccult.bandcamp.com/album/die-nude-for-satan

Sinneslochen.Inc - 'P O L Y B I U S'
More of the above, only this time it's a lost video game soundtrack. The pitch: "1981. A small town arcade takes delivery of a new game, Polybius. Released onto an un-suspecting youth, the game delivers both excitement and intrigue with multiple levels of mind bending puzzles. Popularity reaches fever pitch. One month after its release, Polybius disappears without trace. Stories begin to emerge of players experiencing psychoactive side effects ranging from seizures to insomnia, night terrors to hallucinations…"

Sproatly Smith - 'River Wye Suite'
Eight years in the making. A tribute to the geography, lore and people who live on and by the river that shapes Herefordshire’s countryside. The completion of the album also provides a chance to protest the fact that the river is slowly dying from pollution, thanks mainly to the expansion of chicken factories in the Wye valley. Dreamy folk-rock with field recordings and poetry interwoven.

Kayla Painter - 'Planet 9'
More electronica from a talented UK musician, described by her as "a journey to the hypothetical planet on the outer reaches of our solar system". This is actually a cassette compilation of 3 new tracks and some older tracks from 2020-21 that did not previously exist in any physical state. But it's probably her most coherent statement so far.

Yep, I checked that album out at the beginning of the year and thought it was nice but for some reason never went back to it until a few weeks ago. It has been on heavy rotation along with albums by Perfume, Shabason & Kgrovich and the TOPS EP. I need to find room for them all on my lists.

Turns out I've been underrating 2022 as a good year for albums all along. Much stronger than 2021 overall.

my final missive is surface to air. indie isn't dead, but you might not be looking in all the right places. this belongs in some sort of gallery imo, it is another staggeringly beautiful work by a widely-ignored master, it feels like it belongs out of time, or in all times at once

My top 2 albums are definite top 10, likely top 5, and I make no apologies for being such a consensus centrist because they’re GREAT.

I also ditched my long-running preference to not vote for tracks from albums I also voted for, because in several cases I think the tracks are more likely to place than the albums.

Goose Bigelow, Fowl Gigolo (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 January 2023 23:14 (one year ago) link

Ideally we should come across that music during the year as we browse ILM.
Two weeks in January seems way too late to properly absorb music from a huge composite list. Me I wouldn't trust my reactions on a last-minute sell. December and the nomination period is the last moment I try to catch up, but already at that moment I feel like I can't be an ideal listener and appropriate anyone's taste and intimate history with their music.
It's cool to be swayed though, just doesn't seem to happen much to me in practice, maybe I'm resistant.

Nabozo, Monday, 23 January 2023 08:39 (one year ago) link

i feel all that but I've got no hard and fast rules. OK, none other than only one entry per (main) artist per ballot. I used to think no DJ mix or compilation releases, even years where they might've been my most played thing, but i got over that.

fwiw I did not get time to fall in love with 25 albums over the course of the year. 3 in my ballot are recent discoveries. I know I could do a shorter ballot but this was fun.

Curious to see how well SZA does. Does such a late release hurt or help? Don't get something like that every December.

I usually find a few tracks that make my ballot but rarely ever feel like I have enough time to appreciate an album enough for it to rank. I listen to a lot of new albums every year though.

Same as table, I want to sit with albums for awhile but also like the idea of including a couple new discoveries. I did a mixed ballot and included some of those as 'honorable mentions'.

I posted this on the dedicated thread but I randomly thought of that Sam Prekop & John McEntire album, surprised no one nominated that as I thought it would was a minor ILM hit.

Saer has a point when he calls for fewer nominations. Forty of your own is a lot when you're voting for fifty and the goal is to build a common list. It could be a little artificial if your ballot can be max 50-60% of your own nominates though.
I'd like to add "More conversation !" to his suggestion. One cool thing that we had in 2022 was the midyear thread, for a bit of shameless preview and sharing. Or people sharing their top in their specialty genre at the end of the year. Otherwise maybe the conversations tend to be a bit siloed, or long lists of YT links, and our limited attention spans keep being our worst enemy.

Do we still do a "Summer Jams" thread? That always worked nicely as a mid-year tracks touchpoint

We do, but it's been basically DOA the last few years imo.

Last year we had this thread: 2022 AOTY So Far. And for a few years prior we had a "rolling favorite tracks & albums YEAR" thread.

rob, Tuesday, 24 January 2023 15:13 (one year ago) link

I discovered one of my noms via the Summer Jams thread. We also have rolling genre threads, and obv. threads for artists/albums that folks are especially passionate about. This is how I discover music throughout the year; no way could/would I "cram" via the massive nomination list.

I try to listen to every track that places on the EOY poll, and it's very rare there's one that makes me think – "I would have voted for this if I had known about it..." So I guess the system works for me.

So… I was thinking: I really enjoyed listening to songs others ilxors queued on turntable/plug/outloud but it was live so you had to be there to queue songs and there was no easy way to archive and listen later. Would there be interest in a “ilm listening club” in the form of a private, collaborative spotify playlist? Only rules would be to not delete other people’s songs and only post one track before another ilxor adds another, so if there’s at least two people sharing back and forth the playlist keeps rolling…

There could even be two playlists: one exclusively of 2023 recommendations and another without year constrictions…

Idk I’ve discovered some amazing tracks via this year’s noms playlist and get lost in the individual rolling threads so if several ilxors are interested in participating it could turn out into something great.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 24 January 2023 16:16 (one year ago) link

Come up with some guidelines to ensure one person doesn't add 1000 similar songs, and I'd absolutely be interested/participate

Indexed, Tuesday, 24 January 2023 16:33 (one year ago) link

I like the "only post one track before another ilxor adds another" but feels like something like one track per poster per week/day would be helpful to keep it manageable. If it gets really big, it'll cease to be useful.

Indexed, Tuesday, 24 January 2023 16:39 (one year ago) link

Yeah I mean I was saying wait your turn for at least one person to post assuming there’s not much participation so the playlist doesn’t die a boring death but if there’s idk at least 8 people sharing tracks then yeah, oversharing could be a problem… the rule should then be maybe limit yourself to one song per week or something so the rest and the more inactive members have time to do a “weekly catch-up”…

It also helps having these sort of restrictions to pick carefully what you want to queue… quality over quantity

Idk just an idea and it should be more polished but if there’s enough interest we can all chime in on how to make it work.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 24 January 2023 16:45 (one year ago) link

There were rolling collaborative 'anything goes' playlists back in the day and tho prone to chaos they mostly worked well. Collab. playlists on Spotify now seem to be invite-only so it should be easy enough to manage and worth a go.

I like the idea of a current year listening club starting after the polls with a thread where people comment on latest additions (offhand or Tim F style). I would aim for 3-7 songs per week, either on first-come first-served basis, or people mention when they have a song they want to post and Moka adds it.

I wouldn't do all-time anything goes, but it could be very interesting for a specific era / location / broad genre. Say, pre-1950s music, or a travelogue through lesser-known countries / subcultures.

First time - at least since I’ve been helping behind scenes - when we’ll run albums first and then tracks.

Note regarding my end: For album images I didn’t do too much work this time. I’m using the actual album covers for the image as usualz for the tracks poll I used midjourney A.I. which I thought would save more time but it’s actually more time-consuming than picking and editing already existing images. It was still fun to make and love some of the results I got playing around with it.

If I’m around next year I’ll probably spend more time on the template and ditch a.i. completely.

Results for both polls are great imho, hope you’ll enjoy! See you tomorrow!
