didn't vote for it, was on my long list though so nice to see it show up, my favourite Bieber related track of the 2010s.

Where Are Ü Now and Sorry are the only two Justin Bieber related songs I really enjoy.

Good call picking an image that doesn't feature Justin to start the countdown.

I avoided, without any particular effort, Bieber entirely until this came out. Then a bit less so.

How quickly we forget U Smile (slowed 9x)

I kind of dislike all of three of the people involved in here but yeah that beat and hook - actually made up of chopped and processed vocals from within the song, which is some sort of signature sound skriplo liked to use a lot at the beginning of the decade - are classic.

Ok, I'm liking this (Oranssi Pazuzu) a lot better than the Justin Bieber! I don't usually find myself listening to very much metal, but this gets deeply psychedelic. Good choice, imago!

Vasemman Käden Hierarkia video doesn't seem to work for me (in UK) - here's a link which plays here and (I think) is the same track.

I didn't end up voting for any Italians Do It Better tracks. I might have gone for Kill For Love if it had been nominated. Should have probably given Warm In the Winter a few points.

Really like that we have the previous placements for these tracks. Will be interesting to see how things have changed.

A part of me will never be able to look past the fact that "Shadow" rips off "Wish Fulfillment" by Sonic Youth, but it's been one of my most-listened to tracks since it came out, so you kinda can't argue with those end results. And as pointed out it's indelibly linked with Twin Peaks.

My most represented year seems to be 2011, not a good sign hivemind-wise

Love Feel You, but threw away my JH vote on another track, which will absolutely not place.

The Oranssi Pazuzu song made my ballot - v impressive psych odyssey. Voted for a different Selena Gomez track that I hope will place much higher.

Moka's images and colour schemes a thing of beauty.

Very cute dog in the Feel You video, hadn't seen that before.

Only 13/50 of the tracks I voted are from the second half of the decade. But I'm not the most representative of the ILM hivemind, especially on the track side of things. Albums, it's more evenly split amongst the two halves.

"Feel You" is great but one reason why I didn't submit a tracks ballot is so I wouldn't have to do the impossible and select just one track from an album like "Have You in My Wilderness".

I always go on about how I only really love Tragedy out of the Holter albums, but 'Feel You' is v much hitting the spot for me today.

Not that I can't look them up on my own, but just wanted to point out that these haven't updated for me on the Spotify playlist since New Rules. Is that the case for everyone?

In a bit of a weird emotional state today (basically money worries, nothing profound) and probably listening to 'Feel You' and 'Glue' in succession hasn't really helped, astounding pieces of music as they both are.

The comments on the Glue video are quite the rabbit hole too.

"Feel You" is great but one reason why I didn't submit a tracks ballot is so I wouldn't have to do the impossible and select just one track from an album like "Have You in My Wilderness".

I spent a lot of time with the various Holter nominations but apparently needed that video, just now, to grasp that it should have been on my ballot. Dogs clarify everything.

I stopped listening to HAIM after the first few singles. I really liked them, but played them out and then never jumped back in when the album was released. Listening back now, I really like it, although my favorite was probably Forever. That one might have made my ballot, but it's just been so long since I've thought about them.

Uptown Funk didn't make my ballot, but I can see why people voted for it. Hopefully, its placement is a sign that The Fox (What Does the Fox Say) or Gangnam Style will show up further down the line.

"uptown funk" and th whole nu-school bruno has always felt fairly unnecessary to me. i can go and listen to the gap band right now if i wanted to, why should i have to repeatedly hear a wedding band-style composite of the five best gap band songs?

i also felt that way about amy winehouse vis-a-vis the music that inspired her, but at least with amy there was a world class vocal performance.

“Teenage Dream” feels longer ago than 2010. my vote for a 2010 dance pop song that felt like it might have been from 2007 or something went to Alexis Jordan’s “Happiness” - that one jumped right at my throat from the noms spreadsheet and never let go.

“Teenage Dream” is still pretty damn good, “Bad Liar”, which I liked a lot at the time, pales beside it imo.

btw that Teenage Dream image is glorious! Katy Perry might be interested in buying it!

If We Were Vampires is my first vote to make it, was very high on my ballot. Agreed that it could have been overindulgent but the singing is so restrained and tasteful they pull it off.

I'm surprised New Rules is so low. It was my number 50. Dua was one of the few artists to have more than one song on my tracks list. Don't Start Now has become my favourite of her big hits.

Bad Liar made my long list. Her finest moment.

I was really surprised I didn't find any room for Mitski on either of my lists. Nobody or Be The Cowboy probably should have been on there.

Aww, I'm so happy Pet Shop Boys made it. It was one of the very final cuts from my list. I went for the album instead. I might have gone for The Pop Kids if it had been nominated.

On one hand, I get why people are sick of Uptown Funk. But for me, it's probably the only retro-minded megahits of the 2010s that I'm somehow not tired of. Like I will take it any day over "Get Lucky", which I fear will still somehow place on here.

Voted for the Dua, Mitski, and Katy Perry tracks. "Teenage Dream" is the high point of the Dr. Luke/Max Martin maximalist radio pop run that included Sugababes, Kelly Clarkson, Kesha, Britney, and others. Lifted the electric guitar from "Since U Been Gone," folded in the enormous EDM backbeats of the 2010s, and ran it through the Max Martin songwriting formula (literally at 120 bpm) to create something that at once sounds like every other song and totally its own. Who can deny "You! Make! Me!"? Owen Pallett wrote a good music theory piece on it years ago:

I don't get the appeal of the Tove Lo and Tove Stryke songs, both are pleasant enough songs i wouldn't turn off if they came on the ten spot on a long satellite radio drive but they seem really lacking in immediacy compared to the Icona Pop or Katy Perry or Jack U songs for example.

I also think Bruno did better songs for sure, Locked Out of Heaven is way better than Uptown Funk and I should have voted for it.

xp the Toves deliver a little more sophisticated take on pop that's admittedly not immediate like Icona Pop or Katy Perry, but rewards closer listening with regard to arrangement, construction, chord progressions, etc.

My challops today is that there are at least five other Katy Perry tracks from the 2010s that I find more immediate (and better) than Teenage Dream.

The weird thing about people thinking "I Love It" as being older than 2012, is that it was actually in 2013 when the song really blew up in the mainstream public consciousness.

I remember hearing it on Girls, which also feels older than it actually is.

For some reason I though it was used in trailer for the Jonah Hill film, "The Sitter", but that came out in 2011. So I suppose I'm probably confusing it with something else.

Woooo PSB was my #5! That Purcell DNA...the unabashed simplicity...the soul of England! Also love that the self-important petulance at the heart of the lyrics; very relatable. Still listening and dancing to this on like a weekly basis.

yeah this change in userbase is pretty obvious from the results generally (and has been in the EOY polls for like 5 years now) but this is about the only stretch that's so white

Sorry I missed today's rollout but "I Love It" was my #2, was worried that the whole rest of ILM had forgotten about it, glad to see it place even if too low. Absolute high-water mark of the kind of blown-out ridiculous just-go-for-it pop that it is. I am not in general a guy who shakes my fists in the air but I shake my fists in the air for "I Love It."

I watched the first episode of Twin Peaks: The Return with a friend visiting from Sweden. She was really impressed by it, and especially by the beauty and the somewhat Nico quality of the Chromatics ending song and credits

my biggest re-discovery of the lower section have been Haim. I was all about their singles in 2013 and I made it as far as the album, but didn’t come back to them at all afterwards, which is why I decided against voting for them - but both “Falling”, which was always my favourite, and “If I Could Change Your Mind” are fantastic still, it turns out. during my short kick this morning I also played “Forever” and “Don’t Save Me”, their other early singles.
one reason they were in my wheelhouse back then, as the rare rock(ish)/guitar(ish) band, are the dance remixes they had made, by people like Duke Dumont, Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas, Dan Lissvik and MK.

much closer to the start of the EDM wave (roughly, 2011 to 2016?) than the end of it, pretty distinct from "teenage dream" which was just the latest evolution of dr. luke's sound dating back all the way to "since u been gone"

the genius of "i love it" is in how economical it is, just two sections - the chorus with that huge pounding synth riff & then a quick respite to build to the chorus again

yeah, listening to it again yesterday was absolutely bracing, that hook feels way more monstrous now after a few years of softer, more vulnerable sounds in main pop. trampling over billie eilish lol

in its own widescreen-emo way, ybag pulls a similar trick of economy and wish-fulfilment - a slow build-up into a massive chorus, and then, having given us the massive chorus, taking it away only for a second or two before plunging us straight back into the blissful soup of noise

A part of me will never be able to look past the fact that "Shadow" rips off "Wish Fulfillment" by Sonic Youth, but it's been one of my most-listened to tracks since it came out, so you kinda can't argue with those end results. And as pointed out it's indelibly linked with Twin Peaks.

selena gomez and uptown funk are the only ones i was sure i already knew. gomez is fine, uptown funk is not.
in the 5 years or whatever since i last listened to a haim song i still find them (or it if it's the same song i heard previously) relentlessly mediocre. don't really like anything that's placed so far tho tbf i only listened to the first minute of oranssi pazuzu and decided to spare myself the next 16 1/2 mins.

Glad to see Wolf Alice make it, even at 78! I had this pretty low in my ballot. It's a fun song, but far from the top of my list of Wolf Alice songs, if that makes sense. My #1 and #2 are also Wolf Alice songs that I'm not necessarily expecting to place.

I think I listened to Orange once or twice a long time ago. It's pretty good stuff, even if it doesn't exactly latch with me.

I only heard Strawberry Skies during the run-up to this poll. I really like it, but left it off because my ballot mostly focused on music that I was actually listening to during the decade.

I've never listened to Chairlift or Caroline Polachek. Only know her from the Charli XCX song Tears, which I forgot to nominate but was a favorite of the decade. This song makes me think they would be in my wheelhouse.

I don't remember Wolf Alice being so low in our 2017 poll. It'll probably be higher than our entire top five from that year (already above Bad Liar and New Rules). Because I didn't love their debut, I didn't even check out anything from the second album until our poll. Kisses is the song that made me a fan and ended up in my top ten.

My biggest problem with the song is its actual lack of bass.

The first half of "Pyramids" is OK; the second half is massive

Never knew why Super Bass was the breakout hit, or why it was so high in the 2011 poll, or why people are voting for it now, she has so many better songs and it shows off almost none of her talents. Guess it's not unpleasant, just that's kind of it.

They played this one at the gym I went to almost every day and I have to admit it was a fun song to run to - the first times at least.

I think it’s because Taylor S keeps tinkering with her 2010s output. Moka omitted “All Too Well” from the first rundown for good reason. that track ought to be disqualified.

I do actually think it might have been something to do with the Taylor song. In the post with it added there's a slight extra space in the line alignment - not a p for a br but just a slight misalignment, and it doesn't seem to show up in the code. It's all very sus and I don't understand it.

"archie, marry me" - this was ridiculously high up at one point, very glad the rest of you showed some sense. not really sure why anyone's particularly attached to this, it's fairly generic

"midnight city" - it's clearly onto something but it's underwritten as hell, the press hype around this was soo goofy.

"wildest moments" - fine but there are so many way cooler jessie ware singles from this decade ("imagine it was us", "110%", "overtime", "champagne kisses", "adore you", "mirage (don't stop)")

"superlove" - one of the best early charli tracks but she's done so much better since

"super bass" - voted for this, i was surprised by how great it still sounds - those bubbling synths! the verses! i agree she should have used the title for something with an actual focus on bass though.

"pyramids" - i feel like this got people's attention more for the proggy ambition than the song itself because none of its sections are that compelling

I did a massive listening project for 2011 and ended up ranking Midnight City at ~#150. Also put a track by an unsigned artist at ~#80 and he got in touch to tell me he was flattered but the M83 was his track of the year, I did not agree.

Good stuff. Strawberry Skies would have been a little higher if I wasn't so unobservant when checking the tracks list.

Midnight City is one of those “you had to be there” sort of songs. I wouldn’t rate it anywhere near a top 100 songs of the decade nowadays.

Back then it was a perfect soundtrack for driving around and partying with friends, it tricked me and several people into thinking it was a “soundtrack for eternity” kind of song. It’s actually more of a party trick kind of song. I’d argue several french house songs follow this pattern of sounding mindblowing at the year of release and almost instantly suffering of diminishing comebacks.

Daniel Lopatin (as Oneohtrix Point Never) and Laurel Halo are two of my favorite artists of the decade (I included both in the top 5 on my albums ballot), but as interesting as Strawberry Skies is, it doesn’t really do it for me

Really hoping The Beths can sneak into either (or both) lists. Archie, is the song that kinda got me into these kinds of bands again. There's just something about her voice in the chorus and the guitar sound, particularly in the second verse.

I loved the results today. Very pleasantly surprised to see that Classixx track in here. I saw them supporting Cut Copy years ago and that song got an insane reaction. It felt like the entire crowd was bouncing to the chorus.

I didn't vote for that Björk song, I went for the album instead. Probably should have put it on my list as it's my favourite song she's done since Vespertine.

It has the same effect in me as “Lloyd I’m ready to be heartbroken” so yeah it’s closer to twee than power pop to my ears. Just a cute song that it’s fun to sing along to. Maybe not top 100 songs of the 2010s but about 90% of the songs so far wouldn’t make the cut for me.

It’s almost as is a “best of” list is a subjective exercise. But hey, most of us did vote for things in here, people who didn’t vote shouldn’t bring this party down!

The chorus to this song sounds like the person emerged from 12 years of homeschooling having never heard singing or music before and was given the song to sing and they recorded the first take.

Something shut off for me with Bjork with "Medulla" and I've never been able to get into anything by her from that point on, with the exception of "Stonemilker."

I like the Alvvays song, good memories, it would make my top 200. Anyway, one thing I voted for has placed (the Talabot remix of "You Belong in my Arms"). It's an unusual poll thread experience for me because I've heard almost everything before from previous EOY rollouts, a bit of the surprise element is missing. Hoping for more surprises in the top 60!

Seeing stuff like Katy Perry and other pop hits from this decade here (and the 1975 to come) exemplifies my problem with pop music in this era: it's like the 1980s if there were no Princes or Kate Bushes on the charts so people ended up aggressively stanning Paul Young or Laura Branigan.

My prediction for the next 20 is like 3 votesplit Kendrick tracks to drop, probably not including the one I voted for

Idk if "Archie Marry Me" would have made my ballot but I do enjoy it. The lyrical conceit of her trying to bargain with a bf who "will not risk the alimony" is clever and amusing, in a Stephin Merritt sort of way, in addition to the tune being cute and singable. It's the album after this one that I actually listened to as a whole.
