1. Songs: Rank your top 25 songs by the Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers/Gutter Twins/Greg Dulli solo/any other Afghan Whigs-related projects you feel like. Covers are eligible. 2. Albums: Rank up to your top 7 albums by the Afghan Whigs/related projects. EPs and live albums are eligible too.
3. Covers: Rank up to your top 10 covers by the Afghan Whigs/related projects. Live covers and studio recordings are all eligible.
Since there's little meaningful distinction between Dulli's various projects now post-Afghan Whigs reunion I've opted to include everything together. I definitely encourage anyone who isn't as familiar with the non-Whigs stuff to check it out, Dulli's really quite consistent.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aijmyej68ZU i found this early version of "My Curse" from 1988. apparently it was originally recorded for "Up In It" & was then titled "Caiaphas" but the head of Sub Pop refused to allow it on the record (according to Dulli here: https://www.vice.com/en/article/ae5zbj/rank-your-records-the-afghan-whigs-greg-dulli)

he's actually clarified in a bunch of interviews (https://www.stereogum.com/1905006/qa-the-afghan-whigs-greg-dulli-talks-20-years-of-black-love-shares-acoustic-version-of-going-to-town/interviews/) in the last decade that there was never actually a Black Love movie planned. he had written a screenplay he was trying to get made at the time but it was an adaptation of Ann Imbrie's Spoken In Darkness and nothing to do with Black Love.

iirc i love "the stations." been a while since i heard the record too but according to memory it uh falls off in the second side, which i'll prob be saying about every dulli-associated album from powder burns to do to the beast
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 May 2021 15:08 (two years ago) link
i was pleasantly surprised by the second side of do to the beast recently actually. i love "the lottery", "can rova" is a gorgeous blackberry belle-esque semi-ambient folk song, "royal cream" into "i am fire" is a great two-parter, & "these sticks" has a nice crescendo to close things. i think on release i was disappointed by it feeling more like just another twilight singers album than an afghan whigs reunion one but now with distance it's really a pretty good album on its own terms.
still so weird that mark mcguire from emeralds was a full band member just for that album's recording. when he goes full-on emeralds on "the lottery" it's such an un-whigs sound but it's still really cool & he was apparently responsible for a lot of the beautiful background ambience on the album.
― ufo, Saturday, 22 May 2021 15:23 (two years ago) link
i didn't really mean to slight do to the beast in my post tbh, i think it's the strongest record he'd made since blackberry belle (and then he hit it out of the park with in spades)

i listened to the whole of 'up in it' today on my run, first time in probably 30 years, amazing how much of it i remembered but i guess i listened to it quite a lot when it came out. enjoyed it mostly - not all the songs are that good but there's definitely a few hidden gems in there. production on this is sooo much better than on 'congregation', the guitars that one sound like a total mess in comparison. may as well ramble on about it a bit here, cos i don't think many of these will make the poll?
good songs imo: 'ret*rded' (shame about the title, suggest they call it 'redacted' on all future pressings? one of my all-time favourite opening lines on an album, television's gone and i'm alone with lucifer... what. a. drag.)'hated' (amazing 'heart of glass' steal! somewhat dubious lyrical content)'hey cuz' (this wasn't on the vinyl iirc but i know it and love it from the 'sister brother' single. i think it's incredible - the way the song keeps exploding out of all that scratchy riffing like a cue ball's been smashed into the pack, and everything's just whizzing outwards and bouncing all over the place, absolutely glorious tune)'you my flower' (wouldn't be at all out of place on any of their later records)'i know your little secret' (even then they were really honing that closing number thing they do, definitely a taste of what's to come)
eh: 'white trash party' (this is funny cos it's so very sub pop, it actually sounds more like skin yard or the fluid)'song of the south' (oh man i always hated this one, is it supposed to be stripper music or something?)
hey, i never heard these bonus tracks before today:'big top halloween', 'sammy' (both kind of soul asylum-ish? probably not going drop $200 on a copy of the debut on the strength of these tbh)'in my town' (woah, they're doing that jangly college rock thing! can't quite put my finger on who this sounds like but i want to say the walkabouts?) 'i am the sticks' (aww, this is legit great! was it a sub pop singles club release?)
― building a hole (NickB), Saturday, 22 May 2021 22:45 (two years ago) link
listening to up in it now and it's so strange, feels like a totally different band for most of it. dulli said they was deliberately trying to sound like a sub pop band and they're just not great at it. even the better tracks like "you my flower" and "i know your little secret" don't really compare to anything that came later
"big top halloween" sounds like the replacements huh
― ufo, Sunday, 23 May 2021 01:25 (two years ago) link
ok i'd really forgotten how good amber headlights is. i know when the whigs broke up dulli talked about how he'd demoed songs for their next album but recording with the band just wasn't working out, so that material must have turned into amber headlights, surely?
the songs are remarkably fully formed for being apparently unfinished - the only real tells are the drum sound is especially pretty rough, and it's pretty short. i'm amazed this was largely panned when it came out, even those negative reviews don't really seem to say much except being sick of his lyrical schtick.
really feels like a bridge between 1965 and blackberry belle. it's a shame these songs never quite got the treatment they deserved, like imagine it with the sort of arrangements that blackberry belle got, but what's there is already great.

when the whigs broke up dulli talked about how he'd demoed songs for their next album but recording with the band just wasn't working out, so that material must have turned into amber headlights, surely? He talked a lot at the time abt how it was going to be the second Twilight Singers album, but got scrapped when Ted Demme died. really enjoying (re)thinking about this band for polling purposes, thanks to the instigator/s
i saw the afghan whigs once only - it was in Sydney during the early-ish part of their reunion and rick mccollum was still part of the band, which i'm glad about
knowing full well that they had a reputation as a killer live band back in the day, i still can't imagine them ever having been better than they played this night, it was just a firestorm. great set of mostly gentlemen/black love tunes. dulli's singing was ferocious and much better than in any old clips - has he had lessons or something? he was always a bit pitchy right? anyway, there was a cellist you couldn't hear. it also made me think that more reformed bands should drop their OG drummer for a younger energetic monster like whoever was on the kit that night.
as an odd tonal break from the onslaught, they got Steve Kilbey from the Church up to sing One Day from Seance - i love how Dulli just looks like a delighted kid in this clip. apparently it was a song they covered in their early days as the Afghan Whigs or something? after this they talked about doing a record together but i don't think anything ever came of it. and if Kilbey's dancing is a bit uncomfortable to watch, i guess it's cos he might not be used to singing without a bass? and people who can sing and play bass at the same time are incredible IMO so i'll forgive them some awkward moves.

Alex Chilton is on this record.I became friends with Alex during my time in New Orleans. It was the third time I met him and I said, "Hey, do you remember pissing on our tires?" He had no idea what I was talking about, which was good because then I knew it was nothing personal. I was ecstatic that I got to record a song with Alex Chilton.

this is too hard
saw them twice in the late nineties -- once with horns and backup singers, once without. (and therefore one 'my curse' sung by dulli and one not.)
i'd felt like i was pretty immune to all the stagecraft stuff -- i like shoegaze, after all -- and for a few seconds dulli's whole crowd-pumping act felt pretty cringeworthy. but then somehow i absolutely bought into it and it was just ~amazing~
a cliche but the only other entertainer i've seen to pull all that shit off was, of course, prince. take me away
― mookieproof, Monday, 24 May 2021 23:13 (two years ago) link
have unfortunately never seen him live but dulli comes across as a tremendously gifted performer even on record. like he's not an amazing lyricist or anything but he can really really sell whatever he's singing
― ufo, Monday, 24 May 2021 23:16 (two years ago) link
some ilxor posted that dulli's music has duende, and yes, absolutely, such a great word.

I was theeeeeere (also the Twilight Singers @ Metro and Gutter Twins @ Seymour in earlier years). Have seen them thrice in Seattle since (once with Sir Mix-A-Lot opening), and they're always great, but never that amazing.
made me think that more reformed bands should drop their OG drummer for a younger energetic monster like whoever was on the kit that night.
really love the drummer they had for the 2012 shows
tbf they had turned over multiple drummers before they split! the 2012 drummer, Cully Symington, had been playing on/off with Dulli for years at that point (as the reunion was basically just adding McCollum to the current Twilight Singers and playing more Whigs songs). Bloke from the Saboteurs replaced him before the last album.
as an odd tonal break from the onslaught, they got Steve Kilbey from the Church up to sing One Day from Seance ...apparently it was a song they covered in their early days as the Afghan Whigs or something?
They'd played it the night before in Melbum without Kilbey and announced it as such, yeah. Dunno if they'd already planned for him to guest, or someone sent Kilby the youtube during the day!
what are everyone's favorite twilight singers jams.
Love -> Annie-Mae 4 eva

awww at that kilbeyblog
its so fucking loud
I’ve heard quieter jumbos taking off
this is figuratively true but the room they played is literally a converted factory directly underneath the flightpath, 4 miles from the airport so Steve may also have been jazzily confused

i was super hyped for the gutter twins album in college, probably because they had been recording it for so long, and "idle hands" was like a rock song from hell. i think saturnalia has the best production of nearly any of dulli's records, and i think this is funny because it's surrounded by two twilight singers records where i'm not entirely down with the production choices. imo the first half is still a terrifying sink into black murk; for some reason the spell breaks for me after "circle the fringes"... which is fine given how good "circle the fringes" is. (until i revisited the record last night (my first time in at least ten years) i had completely forgotten that song existed, so it sort of feels like i've been reunited with an old friend lol)

"esta noche" is such a cool track, the way it starts out with that two note electric piano bit that continues through the entire song and that eventually becomes part of the wall of sound where you kinda feel it more than anything else, and that jazzy crescendo rules so much. interestingly kamasi washington plays on it, one of his earlier session gigs. i don't understand the live versions at all though, it's sped up ridiculously and completely loses the groove

Don't know if i'm alone in this but is anyone else praying for a remix/remaster of 1965? I've always felt it sounded really compressed and, to use a technical term, just very smooshed. It's a really unpleasurable listen at points despite how wonderful most of the songs are.

only song i have problems with is (probably controversially) "somethin hot," which does feel ultra-compressed to me. guitars sound like "larger than life" by the backstreet boys, not ideal.
there's a 12'' mix floating out there that's a bit deeper that i prefer

Random Desire is really great, for me the only thing holding it back is that, to my ears at least, Dulli sounds a bit weird on it from time to time, esp in the more animated sections (ie "The Tide"). the songs are uniformly strong and his sense of pacing and sequencing remains uncanny

Bowery 2012 is very good. Have downloaded 1998 to check out later.
I never saw the Whigs the first time round, saw the Twilight Singers in Glasgow a couple of times, but passed on the I'll Be Your Mirror show in London in 2012 because I figured they'd be back with Rick and play shows further north...nope! Have seen the current iteration a couple of times though.
Will try and put in an entry to the poll - was going to listen through everything again but I could probably produce my lists from memory.

random desire is super solid. dulli was really reinvigorated by the whigs reunion tour it seems like because everything he put out since then has been great, and a big step up from dynamite steps, which wasn't bad or anything but it did feel a bit like twilight singers by numbers

One of the things that (sorta) hurt 1965 was that during the first leg of the tour Dulli got banged up pretty bad after a show in Austin, and some shows were cancelled.
https://www.austinchronicle.com/music/1998-12-18/520831/
Afghan Whigs singer Greg Dulli was in the hospital with a fractured skull following an altercation with a Liberty Lunch stagehand after the Whigs' show there on Friday. Dulli has since been released from Brackenridge (the hospital itself declines comment), and reports are that he's OK, but the big question around town since last weekend has been, "What the hell happened?"...Lunch representatives say their lawyers have told them not to comment on the matter at this time, but previously published reports quote the club's co-manager Mileah Jordan saying that Dulli was the aggressor, first threatening and then attacking a stagehand. Witnesses say Dulli, apparently angered over a confrontation earlier in the day, stayed after the club closed to take care of "unfinished business" with the worker, going after him with a two-by-four, at which point the stagehand hit Dulli once and caused the singer to fall backwards and hit his head on the pavement. Police reports seem to back this story as no charges have been filed against anyone, but needless to say, lawyers have been burning the midnight oil on what could turn into another long, drawn-out case involving the troubled Liberty Lunch.

Dulli--who was reportedly in a coma for two days after the incident--sued but the case didn't get anywhere because (as forecasted in the link) the venue went out of business the following summer.

I’m definitely only referring to 1965 - the first half of that album should have ensured it sold millions.
Black Love is a denser record and ‘Honky’s Ladder’ doesn’t scream ‘first single’
― Master of Treacle, Sunday, 30 May 2021 03:45 (two years ago) link
iirc with black love it was the classic situation of the a&r guy at their label who signed them had left the label and now their label didn't care at all about them & didn't support them at all, so the album flopped instead of building upon gentlemen's mild success. dulli also said "honky's ladder" was the label's choice for single which he strongly disagreed with, idk what he wanted but "my enemy" always sounded like the clear single to me?
then they tried to sue their label to get out of their contract & ended up getting columbia to buy out their contract, but it didn't seem like columbia really pushed them that hard either idk. the first side of 1965 really sounds like it should have all been big radio hits.
― ufo, Sunday, 30 May 2021 04:13 (two years ago) link

the production on that hurts my ears - sounds like lots of guitar on it with open strings just ringing away, and it's all just way too high in the mix. feel like it's very of-its-time, loads of sonic youth-inspired bands flooding all the frequencies with guitar, makes me think of steelpole bathtub or someone. i'm sure there are plenty of less obscure examples of that aesthetic but they're not sprining to mind right now. swervedriver kind of did the same kind of thing with a load of guitar parts going off all over the place, but i think they're a good example of where that approach actually works really well. all the parts seem so focussed on their stuff, it's a really cool knot for your ears to untangle, but 'congregation' just feels like there's a whole exhausting layer of extraneous noise. the shift from that to 'gentlemen' is huge, they stripped it down and it's got so much more room to breathe. got some cool songs though!

congregation feels like their real debut album - you can hear their classic sound for the first time but it's a little rough & not as fully formed as the later albums, and the production is pretty bad yeah.
"miles iz ded", "i'm her slave" and "let me lie to you" are all very good
