best out of the current-ish crop of post-punk bands people and algorithms keep telling you to listen to

most of them off the top of my head, but a couple extras I yanked from spotify playlists and a couple (girl friday, goat girl, metz) that are stretching the definition a teensy bit but it's fine cause they're cool and good. amyl and the sniffers are pretty much just punk rock but they're pretty tied into a couple bands here so they get to join the party. iceage and protomartyr have been around a minute but have really had an uptick in the last couple years so they get to hang too.

for bonus points figure out which one I made up. sorry if I missed anyone obvious

also it's kinda fuckin....eyebrow raising that algiers aren't on spotify's big post-punk playlist cause their "fans also like" artists are....preoccupations, iceage, girl band, hmltd, shame, and protomartyr lol

Protomartyr - honorable mention to Slum of Legs, Metz, & TFS.

halfway through the HMLTD and can't tell if this is terrible or kind of compellingly wacky, but I think it's probably the former

Have enjoyed: Girl Friday, Goat Girl, Protomartyr, Iceage, Slum of Legs. I'd say Girl Friday take it on "Decoration/Currency" alone but wasn't too sure about last year's album, I should try it again.

Priests (RIP), Lithics, Nots would be in the running if listed

I saw Protomartyr before they caught any buzz, they sounded like a photocopy of Interpol then. Have struggled to give them a fair shot since.

I like a good bunch of the bands in this list.

The one Squid song I’ve heard (“Narrator”) bodes really well for their album coming out on Warp. It starts out like a facsimile of Pop Group or maybe more the Rapture, but it starts melting into something quite different a few minutes in.

Voted Tropical Fuck Storm with Fontaines DC as runner up, but lots of these are very good - most recently was checking out Dry Cleaning and am on the fence about the sprake/sing vibe but the music is top notch.

of these bands I've seen black midi, protomartyr, algiers, tropical fuck storm, iceage and metz live - none improved on their studio work, tbh, except for metz. watching franklin play and sing in algiers was thrilling but unfortunately his voice was pretty shot by the time they got here.

i like some of these bands quite a bit but there’s something about just about all of them (and they do have a pretty consistent sound right?) that i can’t describe but that is missing some crucial ingredient that makes a lot of the early post punk records pop to me. feels a bit rigid and texturally less raw or something

I suspect this is 50% due to changes in production over the decades and 50% due to close familiarity/association with the original texts

Feel like I would vote Protomartyr out of those listed, because they've had quite a few killer records.

I like Black Midi and Black Country, New Road, but I wouldn't really classify either of those as post-punk.

I dug the one Idles record I heard, but I feel like they are a band that you really only ever need one album by.

Digging the new Goat Girl, way more of a Stereolab vibe than I expected.

girl band
preoccupations
iceage
idles

I was fortunate enough to see Girl Band play with Preoccupations (when they were Viet Cong) and Preoccupations support Idles. I also saw Iceage play in a church basement and a West Philly house show.

So this is tough... The Viet Cong debut is my favorite album by the bunch but Idles has been more consistent throughout their albums so I guess I'll go with them.

something i would not have anticipated ten years ago is parquet courts becoming one of the most influential bands; every local scene has like 3-5 bands who sound just like them

flopson, Tuesday, 6 April 2021 14:10 (three years ago) link

I'm surprised Cabbage haven't been mentioned. Feel like they were on the verge of breaking through a couple of years ago. They weren't great.

I haven't heard every band on the list, but a lot of them don't do anything for me. Idles and the accompanying hype in particular I find very tiresome. A lot of these bands I just find myself wishing I was listening to Art Brut instead. They had the tunes and a cleverness that I just don't get from most of these acts. If Art Brut were just starting out now I probably wouldn't have much interest in them, but at the time they sounded fresh and it was easy to connect with them.

I loved that last Porridge Radio album and the new Goat Girl is one of the best albums of the year so far. I would have voted for one of them if I'd seen the poll in time. I'm still working out the Dry Cleaning album. Florence's vocals and lyrics sell it well, although I do sometimes wish the music was a little more compelling. Half way through I find myself losing interest a bit even though I do like the guitar sounds they use. There's definitely something there though. I've always wanted another band who come close to what Life Without Buildings did and at times I can hear some of that in Dry Cleaning.

They’re as post-punk as Idles, which is to say not much but they have elements (groove, MES sprechsang-y bits) that aren’t just ‘punk.’

Joe Bombin (milo z), Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:49 (three years ago) link

I would err toward the broad church when it comes to a genre that fundamentally just means ‘came after the first half of 1978 or so.’

Joe Bombin (milo z), Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:52 (three years ago) link

Not knocking The Chats here (though I'm not into it enough to make it through a whole album, I still get 'Smoko' stuck in my head every now and again), just can't see a world in which they belong to the genre of post-punk, as elastic as that genre might be. It just feels like it doesn't suit either the music or their own intentions.

(god these are getting tough to keep track of)

enochroot, Tuesday, 11 May 2021 17:05 (three years ago) link

I can't really take any of these bands too seriously because they don't really transcend any of the many ppl they're ripping off, but that said the new track "Slow" by black midi is a great this heat ripoff

Bongo Jongus, Tuesday, 11 May 2021 17:20 (three years ago) link

The "aloof sing-speak" over angular post-punk guitars is something I'm running across a lot lately: Fontaine DC, TV Priest and Mini Skirt also do it to varying degrees of success. My blueprint will always be the Blue Aeroplanes, who add more melody to the angular guitars, but these new bands doing it are very enjoyable if not "transcending the people they're ripping off", as Bongo said.

Have to say not loving the newest Crack Cloud as much as previous releases, and furthest away from "post-punk" influences they've gone probably.
