Only voted for tracks; could have plausibly put together album and video ballots, and possibly should have. The interludes, though, are just a nuisance and I usually skip them or program them out (actually had a playlist called "Janet sans Interludes" for the purposes of re-listening/organizing my ballot).

Happy to see All For You have good amount of support. As others have said, that album was a bit of a revelation when revising before voting. Same goes for Damita Jo which ended up taking a few spots on my tracks list. It's such a beautiful and breezy listen with barely any filler.

some of the production/guitar playing on this record is as lush as anything in her discography... the stretch from "like you don't love me" (great song) thru "moist" is colored by these curlicue guitar lines that kinda snake up like steam from a grate.ā J0rdan S., Saturday, February 16, 2019 11:15 PM (one year ago)

(To Tim's assessment, here's where I admit to thinking they did it better second time at bat.)
If only because the of the last 5 seconds, when the instrumentation of wan balladry is suddenly stripped away, suddenly leaving behind a husk of sexy electro-R&B tension that's evident nowhere else in the track.

67. BETTER DAYS (from All For You, 2001; 264 points; 6 votes)
So let's not really get down....BECAUSE JANET IS THE QUEEN! In 1993 she said in the Vibe Magazine what she thought about Madonna and it wasn't too nice, it wasn't nice at all to be honest! Janet has no reason to hate on Madonna! She is successful and has enough money to take care of herself for the rest of her life, not her and her kids (because she doesn't have any)! But let's not talk about Janet, because I will respond!!!!! QUEEN OF POP.....JANET! Rolling Stones, BET, Vibe, and even VH-1 has stated Janet is the Queen of Pop! MTV has said Madonna was, but then again they have also said Janet was!! But Janet been called the title by more people (magazines, television programs) than Madonna has! It' been so many others who have called Janet the Queen of Pop! She and her brother, Micheal are the KING & QUEEN OF POP! It just runs in the family! They are royalty to the music industry! Janet all the way!!ā Alfonse, Friday, July 27, 2001 7:00 PM (nineteen years ago)

as opposed to the rest of the world, i think that "All For You" (the album) is rather consistent and overall excellent, with that rarest of things - a killer four ballad sequence (esp. "China Love" - as ornate and vividly exotic as Timbaland's finest out-there ballads).

61. NEW AGENDA (from janet., 1993; 303 points; 7 votes)
I was thinking what was the consensus of Janet Jackson on ilm now. I'm glad there is still some love of her in this board. I know in the early 2000s threads they were very cruel about her. Also, I think the gripes about her interludes are much to do about nothing. On later albums they don't go with the concepts of the albums well but during her "peak" years they enhanced aforementioned concept. From the intro to "New Agenda" is probably the best streak of songs on a 90s pop album.ā Okay Pet Shop Boys Aren't That Bad. (lilsoulbrother), Monday, 21 February 2011 23:08 (nine years ago)

53. ROPE BURN (from The Velvet Rope, 1997; 374 points; 9 votes)
first off, janet has been in the business for over 28 years and a superstar for 15 and still going strong. her latest all for you has killer singles and don't even tell me about the title track. it's blazing with a capitol "b." and as far as the velvet rope being boring goes...pullleeezze!! the songs on there are so much more sensual and sexy than any of maddie's cold erotica stuff that it's not even funny. an indifferent grunt over a kool and the gang sample (erotica) is not as nearly as hot as a diana ross sample over smooth melodic beats (velvet rope's my need) or the come-hitherness found in rope burn or anything. nuff said.ā Dave M., Saturday, August 18, 2001 7:00 PM (eighteen years ago)

50. R&B JUNKIE (from Damita Jo, 2004; 401 points; 11 votes)
"R&B Junkie" is this album's "All For You" in that it really just cops a vintage sample and does little else in the production department (the sample in question is Evelyn "Champagne" King's "I'm In Love" which is, like, in my all-time Top 10 EVER EVER, so I can't say I mind Janet purring over it). That track, though, I think sets up the album's concept -- she's not exploring sex (as in Janet.'s oh-this-is-new, or TVR's oh-this-is-rough or AFY's oh-this-is-swingin'), but her love of R&B.ā Rich, Thursday, March 18, 2004 8:40 AM (sixteen years ago)

49. STATE OF THE WORLD (from Rhythm Nation 1814, 1989; 418 points; 10 votes)
Janet is known for her soft singing voice. Janet could hit high notes, she has done it before and she could sing if you just put her on the spot, because she has done that before. Madonna can't!!!! There is nothing wrong with Janet's voice. She has been praised for it. It's WAY better than Madonna's voice, which is mainly studio creation. I know what studio created voice sound like. Take it from someone who has worked in one. Madonna has said she didn't get into the music industry because she thought she had a voice, she got in it for the attention. So that just shows you that she knows she isn't a GOOD singer, BUT you got those fans who don't know any better and are so quick to buy it, like a majority of people on this board. Now about Janet writing skills, whoever said they are weak is just past CRAZY!! She has written some of the best songs in the music industry such as: Growing up and being mature, taking control of your life and not to have and be pressured into having sex if it isn't right to you {that's the album "Control"]....she has talked about racism and prejudice things and people and how people she come together {that's the album "Rhythm Nation1814"}.......she has talked about being and feeling sexy {that's the album "janet."}.....she has talked about the media and rumors and how they just need to leave her [and her brother] alone because they make them want to scream {that's the song "Scream"}......she has talked about dealing with and overcoming depression and being free to be who you really are and she had dedicated a song to her friends she has loss aids to {that's the album "The Velvet Rope"}......she has talked about feeling free, being glad to be single and just confronting people who have done you wrong {that's the album "All for You"}.....And it is many more. So Janet's songs are excellent and always have some kind of meaning to them. And the thing is: she WRITES her songs. She is an excellent song writer. Does Madonna write her own songs???? So let's try not knock Janet down because it is just NO way. If you have something to say about what I type, you'll be wasting your time, but if you do respond, do come correctly and not in a foul manner. I don't have time to argue with anymore dumb ass people on a message board. I don't get paid for this.ā Alfonse, Monday, August 13, 2001 7:00 PM (eighteen years ago)

At the time I thought "The Velvet Rope" the track was fabulously hi-tech, it'd probably remind me of late 90s Max Martin if I heard it now, perhaps cross-hatched with Soulshock & Karlin album.ā Tim F, Sunday, October 19, 2008 12:05 AM (eleven years ago)
I mean most of The Velvet Rope is very bedroom-focused but stuff like the title track, "You" and "Free Xone" help to create this sense of Janet operating with a broader vision and having "something to say" (even if most of that time that something is along the lines of "your coochie gon' swell up and fall apart").ā Tim F, Tuesday, July 7, 2020 7:32 PM (four weeks ago)

THROB THROB THROB THROB THROBā HI DERE, Friday, October 5, 2007 6:05 PM (twelve years ago)
Oh "Throb." Even after all these years, I still find previously unheard fuck grunts in it. And like nothing since Debbie Deb's sainted "When I Hear Music," it perfectly recreates what it feels to lose oneself in the sweaty crosstalk of late night disco dancing. In fact, it may be even more specific than that because what it really reproduces is the vibe of a very naughty sex club, some place where you'd fear losing your govt. job were you caught there. You can hear the Crisco in the disco, the cum-stained sheets of Plato's Retreat. The one time I danced to it in a club (why was this song not spun more????), I felt like I was already in hell. But ya know, a fun, grindin', gay version thereof. But not only is it a masterpiece in and of itself; like "Love Will Never Do," it finds use value in Miss Janet's limited vocal resources because it allows her to die into the song (as Ian Penman said of Prince). Her vocals if not her entire authorial presence are dispersed thoughout the track like a sprinkling of car parts upon a field. In a way, then, it's the quintessential Janet Jam-Lewis song. That's why I believe the vocal levels debate doesn't apply here. Enunciation (if not good singing) has never been on the menu with her (quick - recite the verses of "Alright"). Like so many of the disco divas to come up in the 1980s, she just doesn't have the pipes (John Leland wrote a typically jaw-dropping piece on this in a late 1980s Spin "Singles" column). She was just lucky (and rich) enough to get some genius (and longevity) out of it.ā Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, October 5, 2007 8:51 PM (twelve years ago)

I haven't been able to keep up with the poll over the last few days so just catching up now. I was hoping Runaway and Doesn't Really Matter would scrape the top 20. I really love her carefree joyful side and those two songs are two of her best for that. Falling in love with Runaway during nominations was one of my favourite things about this poll. I was the number one vote for Doesn't Really Matter.
I'm pleasantly surprised to see a lot of Damita Jo and All For You deep cuts make it.
No Sleeep was the only Unbreakable song I voted for. I revisited that album over the last few weeks and I still haven't had that moment where everything clicked. I love that single though.

Second best is that huge snake "If." The best second of her career occurs at 3:21 in this song when the drums spit back into the mix. I wouldāve liked to see a few more tracks from the first two albums or a couple B-sides slip in there, but itās pretty impossible to argue with the top 20. She had great singles.

― Spottie, Friday, 7 August 2020 23:53 (three years ago) link
thank you for like the eighty seventh time eric. this was super fun from the start. it's also made re-realize that janet is one of the defining aspects of my musical mind. she was so amazing with such brilliant material at the perfect times in my life and i guess i've sort of forgot that over the years.
sentimental story crap (feel free to skip to next post):when i first moved down to southern california five years ago, i was in a place i didn't understand, having to navigate streets i didn't understand, going to talk to people i didn't understand. i was consuming a lot of new music in those days, but the barnes and noble that i knew how to get to had catalogue cds for stupidly cheap; like fucking neil young on the beach for $4.99. just massive finds for people to discover or resdiscover. i went in one day with one thing in mind: music that made me happy. as the walking cliche that i am, that was the music of my childhood and early adolescence. and janet was there very often. so many of those rhythm nation songs are so powerful in the mind of a child.
as we get older, we get cynical. we think of pop songs as nothing more than a clever marketing tactic to get us consumers to, y'know, spend. but the way she always just seemed to absorb, accurately translate, and transcend some of the most innovative music ever in a thing of awe. and she always felt natural in that role. let's get to it: she was so fucking cool. just. . . man. maybe it is all just a clever marketing tactic and it totally worked on me because i picked up control and rhythm nation that day, for something like $12 after sales tax.
all i know is that, when i hear some of these songs now, i remember that wise beginner's mind of a ten year old: if it inspires me, it inspires me.
anyway. brilliant poll and rollout. cheers.

oh wow it all happened āTHATS THE END!?āI have one anecdote about āIfā and why I love it so much that I would have shared at the appropriate moment in the rollout but welpI visited the US for the first time in 1993 through school, and spent 10 days in Grand Rapids MI billetted with a local sponsor family & attending high school with the sponsor-family girl my age. On my first day at my first ever American High Schoolā¢ļø I got to watch their pom-pom squadās dance rehearsal in the gym. Their whole rehearsal was to āIfā and it was so great I nearly lost my shit. (Crazy now to think about, since the lyrics are O_O but whatever)They incorprated a lot of those same awesome angular moves as JJās original choreoanyway to this day whenever I hear it, i think of those killer girls dancing their asses off in formation & praise the lord fod giving me THE best American High Schoolā¢ļø memory from that trip ~end~

I haven't been able to get as involved in this poll as much as I'd like this week but it was still a lot of fun to follow and there's barely a weak song here. Empty and Escapade were both in my top three so I'm delighted with the result.
Thanks for putting this together Eric.

I'm not nearly as hardcore as the rest of you, but "When I Think of You" is actually an important song in my personal timeline as a listener: #1 on my year-end in a year where I started working at a downtown record store, rediscovered Top 40 after a decade away (True Blue and Please were also big at the time), and, at least for a few years, drifted away from all the Michael Azzerad stuff that had dominated my life for the first half of the decade.
1. "When I Think of You"2. "Escapade"3. "The Best Things in Life Are Free"4. "Love Will Never Do (Without You)"5. "Alright"6. "All for You"7. "Let's Wait Awhile"8. "Come Back to Me"9. "Making Love in the Rain"10. "Got 'til It's Gone"

"can't b good" and "never letchu go" as well. so much generic goodness on discipline
― uberweiss, Saturday, 8 August 2020 15:26 (three years ago) link
For years I've tried to figure out my aversion to Discipline. It's competent and, as uberweiss notes, generically good for the most part. Then I realized what made it generic: Jackson has no writing credits. I've always been fascinated by how the Jackson-Jam-Lewis axis writes songs. But when her name's not in the credits I can hear the absence.

For years I've tried to figure out my aversion to Discipline. It's competent and, as uberweiss notes, generically good for the most part. Then I realized what made it generic: Jackson has no writing credits. I've always been fascinated by how the Jackson-Jam-Lewis axis writes songs. But when her name's not in the credits I can hear the absence.ā TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 8 August 2020 16:16 (five hours ago) link

I feel like this is an explanation that makes sense as a retrofitted explanation and perhaps with respect to "Feedback" (which wears its contemporary trend-chasing on its sleeve) specifically, and maybe "LUV".
But songs like "Can't B Good" or "Greatest X Ever" or "Let Me Know" feel incredibly of a piece with the songwriting approach of the previous three albums (and in the case of the first and third of those, are better than most of the material on the previous two albums), and something like "Rock With U" is spot-on frothy Janet. Is there a more Janet line for a disco bop than "Strobe lights make everything.... sexier..."?
It feels like a more Janet album (as well as a better album) than 20 y.o., which then somewhat undermines the proposition that the issue is writing credits.

Even as measured against her most obvious contemporaneous rival, I don't consider her the equal of Madonna.
― clemenza, Saturday, 8 August 2020 21:52 (three years ago) link
Her reticence as a public figure and disinterest in theory and self-mythology may work against her, and I like not love many of her videos, but as a singles force between 1986-2004 she matches Madonna.

i would vote for Janet over Madonna for total body of work but it's close
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 8 August 2020 22:18 (three years ago) link
One phenomenon I noticed: when Madonna got restless she left Patrick Leonard, still her best co-songwriter/co-producer, for untried talents. Janet, however, had Jam-Lewis, who revealed themselves to be as protean as Madonna, up to any challenge. Just think how "Nasty" and "Runaway," or "Rhythm Nation" and "Rope Burn" took place along the same evolutionary track!

Haha, I just noticed that in addition to landing an overperforming 3rd place finish, "Empty," like "Deeper and Deeper" in the Madonna poll, got 8 first-place votes, the most of any song.

janet over madonna is pretty easy for me but i've never been quite convinced of madonna's greatness. very good, sure, but not as consistent or exciting as janet at her best
janet over mj is even easier - the good part of his discography really isn't that big and i was never able to love thriller - overexposure as a child means i would be fine never hearing "thriller" or "beat it" again and i'm not exactly inclined to try to love it now for the obvious reasons
prince is wayy closer but i'm inclined to give janet the edge at the moment just for range?
james brown, stevie wonder & little richard all predate the modern 80s-onward pop star model so i wouldn't even really try to compare them

(I know Iāve plugged this poll here before, but I still think at least some (more) of you might really enjoy it. If youāre looking for way in it could be Tiwa Savage, whoās worked for or with people like George Michael, Whitney Houston, Mary J Blige, Chaka Khan, Fantasia, and Chuck Harmony during the UK- and US-centered first part of her long career. Also, Ciara bit one of her songs for āFreak Meā!)(sorry, I honestly thought I would be able to find a direct link between them, but no joy - okay, they were both on the roster for MTVās 2018 Europe Music Award - but do yourselves a favour and take a little trip to that other Rhythm Nation!)(Janet fans also might find lots to love in Niniola, and then of course thereās... Okay, okay, Iāll stop now and remain forever silent)
putting my ballot together for this poll was the most fun I had with music all year, if not ever. good memories.

57 today. Played "Escapade" for a grade 7 class. Either too apathetic to raise a hand (a real possibility with this class) or indicative of how much things have changed: no response to "Anyone know her music?"
― clemenza, Tuesday, 16 May 2023 13:15 (eleven months ago) link
I appreciate this specific effort because "Escapade" is godhead, but I'm curious ... do you let your students get cracks at picking media to share?
― fair but so uncool beliefs here (Eric H.), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 13:28 (eleven months ago) link
What do they think about Madonna? Janet Jackson has an amazing catalog of hits, but she's never been anywhere near the dominant personality of, say, Madonna. Further factor in the fallout from the Super Bowl and subsequent semi exile, and maybe that explains why she has less resonance with really young people?

Genuinely didn't realize that "If" was earmarked as the first single. I think the swap worked in both songs' favor:

Well, they're not my students--I'm just in as a supply. When I had my own class, we did lots of stuff where they picked something for an assignment. But for Today in History, then and now, I pick whatever song/film clip I want to play.
I'm sure most know at least something about Madonna. (I also suspect a few in here know at least something about Janet Jackson. They're just not the most forthcoming class.)

The irony is the best way to connect them with Janet would probably be through the history of YouTube, but of course that is not appropriate for school.

I appreciate the effort to expose students to film and music that aren't part of their daily diet, but on the other hand if a teacher had shown my 7th grade class a video of, say, Cleo Laine on her 57th birthday I'm not sure any of us would have had a lot of context to respond. But who knows what stimuli will stick with them in the future.
― Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 16 May 2023 14:18 (eleven months ago) link
I get that, obviously. Her last Top 10 single seems to have been 2001. I started teaching in 1991--it would have been like me showing them something from 1969 then.
I don't think the Cleo Laine analogy is particularly apt, though; Janet Jackson has a lot more to do with they music they listen to (if they do...) then Cleo Laine had to do with the music you listened to in grade 7. (At least that's my guess.) Anyway, you either show them or you don't; to me, the exposure is much better than deciding "They won't be interested in this" preemptively. (Also what keeps the job fun for me.)
― clemenza, Tuesday, 16 May 2023 14:41 (eleven months ago) link
But who knows what stimuli will stick with them in the future.
That's it. By and large, when I've run into students years later, the two things they'll remember from their year with me are these Today in Historys and going for ice cream at the end of the year. They certainly don't remember me trying to pretend like I knew something about science.
