Quite the collection!

just checked, i have only put 88 releases in my profile.
now that i have re-digitised most of the archive i may have to use the current downtime to add a few more.

i got really bored a few years ago and added everything i had. then i merged my partner's collection as well, recently. now i don't buy so many records, so it's just a matter of entering in a couple news ones, every once in a while

Damn I'd wish I'd know those Topdown Dialectic LPs were such limited releases.

Evan, Sunday, 29 March 2020 19:03 (four months ago) link

yeah, topdown dialectic releases kind of remind me of being into grouper back in the day - she would only press like 500, but the releases were soooo good that you just had to get them. i have only been on top of the topdown game since vol 2, but i am ready to instantly scoop of whatever they release right now

Many added manually before I located the wonderful bar code scanner in the app. Very few CDs scanned so far. UK Garage and dubstep heavy.

Psychocandles (Pyschocandles), Sunday, 29 March 2020 19:12 (four months ago) link

That was almost still the case even with the latest Nivhek, then it seems there was a repress. I look at the sales history on here often and I wonder if that person that spent the "Max" amount of say $100 on a release that for the most part is pretty easy to find for $20-30 ever since whenever-that-was feels extra silly in hindsight. I've been caught up in the frenzy now and again (mostly on bandcamp), but I've only screwed myself out of saving like $20 at most in the long run.

Evan, Monday, 30 March 2020 00:29 (four months ago) link

Didn't know about the bar code scanner, thanks for the tip.

I pretty much only buy used vinyl, so my collection basically only covers up to 1991 or so:

The Ghost, Tempa, Big Apple, DMZ nexus was great to hear unfold at the time. The sound morphed from release to release in fascinating ways. Some of those tracks, even the simpler ones have definitely stood the test of time for me. El-B 'Give a Little Love', Touchdown 'Baby Love', El-B 'Never Say Never' Brandy flip. Those rimshots ;)

Not to BRAG (incoming brag) but I got in on Duster before it became a cult hit. Nabbed Stratosphere back when it was a $10-15 LP via mailorder (can't remember if I got it somewhere dull like Amazon or something about 10+ years ago). But yeah kept putting off checking out the new one. Saw them live a handful of times in recent years ramping up to this release too.

Luna is associated with Tobin Sprout right? I asked him where I could get Let's Welcome The Circus People and he said ask the Luna shop. They got back to me many months ago and said they were putting one on sale for $85. Since that's $40 more than I was hoping to spend I declined and sure enough it's still sitting there in the discogs marketplace today.

I used to manage a store in NJ but rarely would my co-workers be on my wavelength, sounds like I'd have fit in better over there with you guys!

haven't logged a lot on discogs but I'm a very active buyer. that old fave artists list needs updating and the wantslist is mostly outdated too. I logged a lot more on RYM where my user name is corcomroe.

Paul, Monday, 30 March 2020 21:48 (four months ago) link

the wantlist feature sends me daily emails about the same LP, every single day

Karl Malone, Monday, 30 March 2020 22:50 (four months ago) link

it's the worst... like, I have 500+ items on this thing (most of which I just use because I don't want to forget to investigate them) but it sends me notices for the same 5 records from the same 10 sellers day after day.

justice 4 CCR (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 30 March 2020 23:05 (four months ago) link

I switched off the wantlist notification emails - I think maybe some sellers re-list their stock regularly to get peoples attention.

I deleted everything out of my wantlist having realised there was stuff that had been in there for ages, was inexpensive but I hadn’t bothered getting.

michaellambert, Monday, 30 March 2020 23:13 (four months ago) link

xp yeah I fucking take those out of my damn wantlist cuz I hate it so much, the re-listing trick. I wish you had a way to block sellers that do it.

PS if anyone has anything on my mostly ridiculous wantlist, I happily accept YSI options, mostly I just wanna hear them. it's been ruthlessly pared down to things that basically never get sold, so I never get emails.

Here's my mess: https://www.discogs.com/user/dinkytown/collection.

Wanted to get collection insurance, so had a go at cataloging a couple years ago and got through maybe C in rock/etc. and one box of singles before bailing. I don't have the patience to put a bright bare bulb on and look at the runout grooves for Humble Pie's third album to see which plant it was pressed at.

Now I just occasionally enter a record while listening, which makes it all the more futile, if I ever want to have a go at the rest.

"I don't have the patience to put a bright bare bulb on and look at the runout grooves for Humble Pie's third album to see which plant it was pressed at."

Major label albums from the 60s-70s in particular are such a chore to correctly add for exactly this reason. Sometimes runout isn't even enough to narrow it down (or it feels that way).

Evan, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 01:09 (four months ago) link

exactly. 77 variants of a record that (even today) is only worth $4. but my OCD won't let me just pick a close-enough option.

Somebody asked me this question recently and I immediately thought it must be something indie from the 90s. Like my original presses of the few albums I have by The Divine Comedy, Tindersticks, Denim, Supergrass, Stereolab etc. When I got home I realised the correct answer was probably this Miley Cyrus RSD exclusive from a few a years ago.

my most valuable records by median price (assuming I've actually added my most valuable records - about half of it I haven't got round to adding to my discogs):

The Carpettes - Small Wonder? 7" - £84.82 - did actually pay about £40 for this, it's the rarest single on Small Wonder records iirc which I was collecting at the time as I lived round the corner from where the Small Wonder record shop was
Various - London Popfest 2009 CD-R - £81.00 - ??? WTF ??? I would try and sell this but my copy skips. why would someone pay £81 for this? it's all previously released stuff!
Blonde On Blonde - Rebirth LP - £77.88 - one of my grandpa's records
Twilight Zoners - Hospital 7" - £77.40 - paid 25p for this iirc
Thee Oh Sees - Help LP - £68.85 - splatter vinyl, got it at a gig
The Seize - Everybody Dies 7" - £63.33 - paid a fraction of this but it's not a great copy tbh
The Bleach Boys - Stocking Clad Nazi Death Squad Bitches 12" - £60.86 - bargain for this one apparently
Puncture - Mucky Pup 7" - £57.12 - cost me a tenner. another Small Wonder single, best known for being covered by the Exploited, probably
Tall Dwarfs - 3 EP's 3x10" - £57.10 - think I paid £5 for this off Ebay years ago
Black Easter - Ready To Rot 7" - £56.94 - this one is on Killed By Death #5 which is probably why it's so much

Nice! I was pretty unawares till the reissue – that Mark Richardson piece about rediscovery tipped me off, I think: https://www.theringer.com/music/2019/2/22/18233366/duster-reissue-discogs-rare-music-vinyl

LUNA's longtime owner is from Dayton, and did a lot of GBV and related releases for a long time. So yeah...that's us :) Shop is temporarily closed, but we're still selling online!

It's funny how people's tastes coalesce working in a store...maybe it's personalities/age/interest? A few of us are long-time friends/bandmates as well, and the manager has worked there 20 yrs (the store turned 25 in December). If you're ever in Indy, pull through! :)

dronestreet, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 15:34 (four months ago) link

So weird to imagine ebay existing at the same time that anyone would have valued original Tall Dwarfs records to be that cheap, at least not without major defects. Even if demand for NZ rock was low something like that would surely be at least £15. Or the vinyl boom of the past 12ish years has just calibrated me to such an extent I can't even remember anything different.

Jazz Butcher - Big Questions CD, $92.50
Bill Nelson - Trial By Intimacy CD box (from 2012), $86.42
Scott Walker - In 5 Easy Pieces box (from 2006), $92.86
Colourbox - Colourbox CD box (from 2012), $137.90

One of my most valued and valuable records is the Air France 2x10". In 2010 I knew that was going to be a tough one to get in the future so made sure I did then.

Maybe way less "cool" but I remember killing myself trying to get that Calexico boxset. Mostly because it contained all of their more experimental leaning tour exclusive albums, and their sonic desert atmosphere evoking experiments are what appeal to me. Don't know how motivated I am to track stuff down like that these days but the biggest thrill might just be stumbling on anything underpriced. Everyone is hip to the online markets and the going rate on anything these days.

Evan, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 20:41 (four months ago) link

nah if it's really a test pressing for the 2019 reissue then that's a separate entry from the LP reissue itself

sleeve, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 21:49 (four months ago) link

Yeah but normally it just goes in the list among the versions of the album, in this case next to the retail release version of MR-018.

Evan, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 22:08 (four months ago) link

OK so yes the year would be correct in that case.

Evan, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 22:08 (four months ago) link

ohh yeah I see what you are saying, yes that's in the wrong place

sleeve, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 22:13 (four months ago) link

I thought my most valuable record was:

http://www.discogs.com/sell/release/10960799?ev=rb
Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs reissue of Dark Side of the Moon

but it could be my sealed Let it Be from 1970 with Korvette's $2.99 price tag going by the asking prices.

Beatles collectors can be insane. How much you think it would go for?

Evan, Wednesday, 1 April 2020 11:48 (four months ago) link

It's kind of hard to tell. First, it's sealed, so I don't know which version it is exactly. Second, sealed/mint copies listed up to $350, but not seeing that copies have sold that high. My guess is I might be able to get $100-$150?

Of course there are a couple copies on ebay between $200-$500 as well.

Well yeah people can ASK for whatever amount they want.

Popsike archives sale details for reference.

Ha, slow down- you have to add "1970" and sort by new to old, then pick the most recent sale(s) of copies that match yours.

No kidding. I'm shocked to find out that the most (potentially) valuable record I own is this 1978 reissue of the White Album on white vinyl.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 3 April 2020 01:30 (four months ago) link

to be fair:

"New lacquers were cut for this release."

and from the comments:

"The sound quality on this particular pressing is the very best you'll find, and in my estimation, better than the original UK stereo (I have both). It has a luminous quality that is really compelling."

so it's kind of like that reissue pressing of Bowie's Hunky Dory, where the stars all aligned properly w/r/t sound quality, I hate to sound like a Hot Stamper huckster but sometimes certain pressings really do shine

I've never heard of that White Album on white vinyl. Ha!

Why, I would make a fantastic Nero! (PBKR), Friday, 3 April 2020 02:03 (four months ago) link

The weird thing is that I didn't know it was on white vinyl until after I bought it. Music Mart (RIP) in Costa Mesa just reshrinkwrapped a promo version and put it out on the floor.

I've never cared to do any discogs edit but I came across a version of a Swirlies 7" that isn't there... I feel like I could figure out creating the entry but I'm a little intimidated by it. Everything is relatively clear expect the part about how to add a version of a release rather than a standalone. Anyone have experience with this?

I suggest a Discogs forum for this question.

this explains it just as well as i could, and with pictures:

if you're having a hard time with any of that i'm happy to help / clarify

budo jeru, Tuesday, 21 April 2020 19:07 (three months ago) link

I sympathise. I was all ready to add the new Cowboy Junkies album but I got stuck on which format to use, since it's only available on streaming services, not as a CD or a download. A quick look at the discogs forum confirms that albums only released on streaming services are not eligible for inclusion, since it's not possible to "own" them. Which leaves the Cowboy Junkies discography on discogs sadly incomplete.

the grateful dead can dance (anagram), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 19:11 (three months ago) link

you should just make bootleg CD-R versions of all the streaming-only stuff and then list them as placeholders until the band has the good sense to actually release their records, at which point some future nerd can merge those releases with yours

budo jeru, Tuesday, 21 April 2020 19:15 (three months ago) link

it’s not incomplete if they didn’t release it. streaming only is dumb.

brimstead, Tuesday, 21 April 2020 19:21 (three months ago) link

some future nerd will probably not enjoy having to delete some random homemade CD-R from the database

no you're dumb, why is streaming it not releasing it?

This thread is so 2020 right now

ravedeaf nineHEIN?seventyWHO? (Craig D.), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 23:13 (three months ago) link

so bands as “big” as the cowboy junkies are just streaming albums now, not releasing them? that’s totally awesome.

brimstead, Wednesday, 22 April 2020 04:01 (three months ago) link

fine call it “releasing”, whatever

Thanks for sharing! Wow you're pretty active in the comments. Some hot takes there notably in your praise of Slovenly!

Evan, Wednesday, 22 April 2020 17:48 (three months ago) link

https://discogs.page.link/1a9Q <- does that work? Not really complete as I put all my collection into CLZ collector before I realised Discogs would be much better, and couldn’t face having to do it all again. Will get round to it at some point but for now this is mainly new purchases and a few of the bigger box sets and stuff.

Hey Ant1973 how's that Blue Notebook reissue? I really liked that album a lot when it came out. Should revisit.

Evan, Monday, 27 April 2020 14:25 (three months ago) link

I loved the Blue Notebooks when i came out, but I feel like it's been so completely subsumed into tv/movie soundtracks that there's no need to re-listen to it now... it's just kinda ambient in the culture at this point.

enochroot, Monday, 27 April 2020 14:35 (three months ago) link

Yeah I have a general aversion to music that specifically sounds like a doctor drama theme. That being said, where has Blue Notebooks shown up?

Evan, Monday, 27 April 2020 14:44 (three months ago) link

I don't use Discogs to log my collection, so here's my seller profile, sorted from priciest downwards.

The most valuable record I own is the UK 7-inch promo of Martha Reeves - No One There, which I don't plan to sell unless I'm in dire financial need.
