kicking the year off with creeper, who will likely be fucking huge

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:25 (four years ago) link

both new Creeper songs are immense, glad they now have the widescreen production they deserve

really digging the Cayetana album, super concise lil gems

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:26 (four years ago) link

wait, cayetana album? didn't they break up

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:27 (four years ago) link

ahhh apparently it's a reissue of their 2014 album it's dated jan 2020 on Spotify. anyway it's real good!

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:28 (four years ago) link

oh nervous like me is definitely a very good record

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:29 (four years ago) link

"hot dad calendar" and "black hills" forever

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:29 (four years ago) link

i'm also guessing it was reissued bc it looks like tiny engines is in trouble

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:30 (four years ago) link

something about the new Creeper songs and potentially getting a new MCR record just feels like (wonderful) overkill to me. we're not worthy!

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:30 (four years ago) link

also stoked for: Ratboys, Worriers, Pears, and fuckin FIREWORKS (proper album rollout when)

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:36 (four years ago) link

can confirm the ratboys record is fuckin awesome

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:37 (four years ago) link

lastly I mentioned it on the punk/non-indie thread but the Chubby and the Gang record is melodic enough for pop-punkers to roll with, I think

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:39 (four years ago) link

oh speaking of bands that don't quite fit this thread but i'm posting them anyway, is anybody here a bad enough dude to be down with knock over city

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:43 (four years ago) link

this is great, gruff delivery reminds me of my beloved drug church a bit

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 24 January 2020 23:04 (four years ago) link

y'all

this Ratboys album

i thought they were gonna be better than most of their contemporaries based on GN and this record delivers on that

alpine static, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 22:19 (four years ago) link

otm, it's a goddamn achievement, i may start a thread

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 January 2020 00:03 (four years ago) link

it isn't out for a month though! is that going too far

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 January 2020 00:03 (four years ago) link

i guess i do that all the time but it feels mean when i've heard the album before everyone else lol

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 January 2020 00:18 (four years ago) link

For the love of God, people, go see Drug Church live.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Monday, 3 February 2020 05:21 (four years ago) link

how come?

alpine static, Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:44 (four years ago) link

vulture sat on it for a year which diminished my enthusiasm for it, but i'm glad it exists now. also i have no idea what my blurbs are like anymore

if anyone is nostalgic for catchy hairpin-turn pop-punk, I recommend the new Pears singles (and their last album and split LP with Direct Hit, for that matter).

simon have you heard the loathe record

it's more appropriate for the metal thread than here but also, in a way, it isn't

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 16:54 (four years ago) link

YES it's really good! I actually thought about bumping one of the Deftones threads because parts are almost criminally similar and it should appeal to anyone who's impatiently waiting for the new album. I'm not convinced by all of the djent-y bits but I'm impressed with the scope.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 16:56 (four years ago) link

I thought simon had bumped this thread telling you all the Pup album placed in metal poll

Oor Neechy, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 16:57 (four years ago) link

oh I knew that was going to happen (one of the reasons I was fine w not voting for it)

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 17:04 (four years ago) link

another thing that could qualify for the metal thread: the new envy record is uh so fucking good???

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 21:11 (four years ago) link

it really is. a lot more metal than Pup though

gman59, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 21:43 (four years ago) link

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 28 February 2020 16:09 (four years ago) link

Envy usually make the metal poll. in fact a single made last years iirc

Oor Neechy, Friday, 28 February 2020 16:14 (four years ago) link

I like this recent Ratboys album (posting here b/c it's mentioned above; tho I wouldn't have thought to classify it in one of the thread title's genres).

Some of it reminds a little of old-school Sleepyhead (that dreamy, love-rock feel)... some tracks also have a bit of a Big Thief sound, like if their first album had been even poppier (though it may be the singer's vocal tone that's largely leading me there).

I'm surprised at the BNM for the Dogleg album - it's a fine debut but didn't feel that distinguished to me at least on one listen

brechtian social distancing (Simon H.), Monday, 16 March 2020 12:48 (four years ago) link

much more up my alley: Wednesday's I Was Trying To Describe You to Someone, found via my Discover playlist. lovely hazy depressive bedroom-and-garage emo with elements of slowcore and some surprising little turns. features a song called "Maura" for extra ILM points.

i'm not linking it but i'm so fucking furious that billboard published an article about the attempted comeback of the abuser from pwr bttm. so furious

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 3 July 2020 17:17 (three years ago) link

there's a worthwhile way to tell/cover that story but scanning the article it seems extremely sympathetic tot he point of fawning

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Friday, 3 July 2020 17:39 (three years ago) link

Shortly after the Jezebel post, Hopkins read a Facebook entry mentioning the accuser’s hometown and says he became convinced that Jen was the woman he had met at the Midwest house party. “I was like, wait a minute, I didn't bring this person back to my house like it says in the article. I went back to their house at their invitation,” they say, then referring to their later rendezvous in New York, “If I'm this big, [imposing] person who you don't feel safe with, why do you want to come stay at my house?”

good stuff. not at all taken directly from the abuser's playbook

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 3 July 2020 17:43 (three years ago) link

not my story to tell but i know someone they abused, and y'know maybe this piece could've never been written or published

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 3 July 2020 17:46 (three years ago) link

Barbaris originally wanted Hopkins to write a first-person account of their 2017 experience as an op-ed for this outlet. Billboard’s editors suggested instead a reported story in which Hopkins as well as their accusers would be given the opportunity to tell their respective accounts.

shot

Billboard’s numerous, repeated attempts to present the accounts of these accusers as well as those of the music-industry representatives that dropped PWR BTTM were met largely with silence. The person who leveled the charges of sexual abuse did respond by email, but after expressing anger that Billboard was working on a story about Hopkins, declined to speak on the record.

chaser

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 3 July 2020 17:48 (three years ago) link

feel like any editor who read both of those paragraphs would remember the existence of the kill fee

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 3 July 2020 17:57 (three years ago) link

I can certainly imagine an interesting piece about someone accused of abuse who took stock, reconciled appropriately, took some time, and then all concerned wrestling with how to come back from that. This is clearly not that piece or that situation

I had paid zero attention to Creeper until this new album, obviously need to go back to the last one too. But this is reeeeaaaaally scratching that MCR gothy glam-punk itch. So many hooks, and I love that it's a little cheeky but also totally unironic in all its doomy romanticism.

I think I prefer the sugar rush of the debut but I do like the new one a lot

same here - loving this record and will check out the earlier one too. it's less emo/pop punk and way more glam than I expected? singer sounds a bit like Patrick Wolf in his lower range, similar levels of goth theatricality too.

what are everyone's opinions of Spanish Love Songs 'round here?

i appreciate the power and the enthusiasm, and i'm not gonna lie, i will take a guy screaming "keep yr head up if you're not ok" at me right now, but

i also just can't shake the feeling that they're like a fuzzy Xerox of a Xerox of The Menzingers

should i let it go and just enjoy the tunes?

alpine static, Friday, 28 August 2020 00:28 (three years ago) link

I know what you mean - they're a bit basic musically, but they write very impactful and catchy songs, and the lyrics are often great. You could reasonably say they took some shortcuts but I still like them a lot.

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Friday, 28 August 2020 02:53 (three years ago) link

dude sings with an intensity you don't see too often. lyrics are great. very dark places occasionally, but relatable. I do think the new album is a step better than their earlier stuff

i don't really like any of the bands that fit this mold (forever disappointed that not all pop-punk records are awkward breeds by the sidekicks) so i haven't heard spanish love songs yet but i'm gonna give them a shot!

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 28 August 2020 14:58 (three years ago) link

yeah, I guess that's down to some combo of 1) everyone getting sick of scene sex pests (not that they've been totally stomped out yet of course) 2) societal decline and 3) the influence of certain acts in the late aughts / early 10s

I'm assuming someone has already written about this somewhere though
