NOUGHT BUT THE TRUTH: 2000-2009 albums & tracks VOTING (and campaigning) thread DEADLINE OCTOBER 11

And so it has come to this: 1682 albums, 1884 tracks. Your job is to distil each of those into a mere 50, and present your findings to the committee, who will, after three weeks, reveal the ineluctable will of our particular gathering of musical superfans, with regard to the decade of its blessed creation.

There'll be house! There'll be rap! There'll be indie! There'll Beyoncé!

But how, how to vote? I hear you cry.

Well, noted committee member seandalai has very kindly contributed the following SUPERCHARGED version of his famed EOY template, now with added rocket boosters for top 5 placements!

VOTING FORM

A few things (most of which are reiterated in the form):

- COPY AND PASTE FROM THE ALBUMS AND TRACKS LISTS. Don't just type up your nominations from scratch. For example, you may THINK you're voting for Pink - Get The Party Started but you're NOT because it's actually P!nk - Get the Party Started with an exclamation mark and that will be the ONLY way to get your nomination NOTICED. Even if it's misspelt, you have to use the version from the spreadsheet.

- You can do a weighted, mixed, unweighted or 'missing' ballot. Not doing weighted or mixed misses out on the awesome super bonuses for top five placements, though, so, your choice, y'know.

- I'm working on finishing the Spotify playlists - the closer I get to the end, the further away it seems to recede! They're about three-quarters done as it stands.

Spotify albums playlist (I've picked what seems like a nice meaty track off each album as representative)

Spotify tracks playlist

- Non-Spotify tracks are being campaigned for here: NOUGHTIES/NOWTS/00s POLL CAMPAIGNING SIDE-THREAD: Youtube, Bandcamp & other links to YOUR nominations that AREN'T ON SPOTIFY

- The deadline is the night of October 11 but really it's when seandalai wakes up the next morning.

- Listen to as much as you can before voting! This comes by order* of THE COMMITTEE. Also, stay safe and have fun!

*not actually an order

Dan S, Saturday, 21 September 2019 01:05 (four years ago) link

Would it be possible to post the nomination lists to Pastebin? A basic text file is easier for me to handle than a spreadsheet.

in addition to Sheena Ringo (who i wrote a little bit about here: Best albums (and tracks) of YOUR favourite albums (and tracks) of the ENTIRE NOUGHTIES: 2000-2009 Ballot Poll Nominations + Campaigning Thread) i wanna campaign for a few more things

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbiSxunJatM
Perfume's "Polyrhythm" is one of the most thrilling pop songs i've ever heard, its polyrhythmic breakdown never gets old. would be a wonderful pop song even without all the rhythmic tricks but those take it to an even higher level.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppSAGtNQcfY
Cymbals Eat Guitars's Why There Are Mountains is one of my favourite rock albums. reminiscent of the proggier/structurally weirder end of pavement etc. but still relentlessly catchy and with electric piano, vibraphone, organ and trumpet all over the place which softens the sound a little and certainly helps it to stand out from its 90s influences. easily the best thing to come out of that whole late 00s/early 10s wave of 90s revivalism.

ufo, Monday, 23 September 2019 03:08 (four years ago) link

thanks for doing this imago/seandalai! just spotted a typo in the albums list: Stars - Set Yourself Fire should be Stars - Set Yourself on Fire

got my albums down to a top 100 and I'm wiped out. Don't even know how I'm going to cut it in half - the 00s were a brutal time for me and a bunch of these records literally saved my life.

Roz, Monday, 23 September 2019 05:54 (four years ago) link

I noticed that in the track noms, Björk's name is written both as "Björk" and as "Bjork", without the umlaut. I have a habit of correcting missing umlauts, but if I vote for, say, "Pagan Poetry" as Björk and not as "Bjork", will it mess the voting automation?

Tuomas, Monday, 23 September 2019 06:23 (four years ago) link

It definitely risks the result not being noticed, especially if people have already voted for it in the 'wrong' spelling. Keep it as it is and if it places I'll make sure it's spelt properly in the rollout.

As for Pastebin, I'll see if the tracks and albums can be c&p'd into a Pastebin later (perhaps someone who's at home on a computer could also try this?)

imago, Monday, 23 September 2019 10:47 (four years ago) link

I was going through the nominations and I noticed this one:

"Cut Copy - Lights and Magic"

Shouldn't that be "Lights and Music"?

daavid, Monday, 23 September 2019 13:38 (four years ago) link

That's on the tracks list, BTW

daavid, Monday, 23 September 2019 13:39 (four years ago) link

If it places, they'll correct it in the rollout. This goes for any misspelled track or album. Take it from me, former EOY poll runner!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 September 2019 14:58 (four years ago) link

If people can't remember or look up the names of tracks and albums they love enough to nominate for a decade-wide poll, that's on them

Emeralds - What Happened?

well worth your time if you dig floaty space synth action with a bit of grit in the mix

sleeve, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 22:03 (four years ago) link

I’ll put some information on some of the more niche stuff I’ll be voting for up in phases. A couple of tracks:

Kapela Ze Wsi Warszawa- Maydow - Polish drone-folk. KZWW were early participants in Poland’s roots revival scene, taking near-forgotten trad melodies / styles at risk of disappearing in a country perceived as being indifferent to its cultural heritage and incorporating them into new songs. A lot of their stuff is fairly jaunty but Maydow has a strong folk-horror vibe that may appeal to fans of Espers or the Wicker Man idk.

Kasia Stankiewicz - Francuzeczka - I have vivid memories of going to Poland for the first time, getting to the hotel, switching on the TV and the video for this sprawling electro-pop marvel playing. I’ve been transfixed ever since.

The Konki Duet - Il Fait Tout Gris Released slightly before the Nouvelle Vague album but with a similar concept, it’s a French cello cover of Fade To Grey. There isn’t the same sense of ironic detachment you get with Olivier Libeaux’s project though, it’s played dead straight and works wonderfully.

Lady Saw - Five Star Hotel Probably a minor entry in her immense discography but the combination of Mario C’s bouncy Bomb-A-Drop riddim and Saw’s lyrics about precisely which hotels she’d let suitors take her to is enormous fun.

ShariVari, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 22:13 (four years ago) link

More tracks:

Raymond & Maria - Ingen Vill Veta Var Du Köpt Din Tröja - Raymond & Maria have cornered the market in sweet acoustic indie-pop songs about how capitalism can lead to a decent standard of living but is ultimately dehumanising (Jobs Where They Don’t Know Our Names, The Fish Are Swimming Slower Every Year, etc). Their best is Ingen Vill Veta Var Du Köpt Din Tröja, re-released a couple of years later in English as No-One Notices Your Brand-New T-Shirt. The chorus approximates to “no-one will be sad when you die / nobody will miss you / nobody even cares where you bought your shirt / even though you’ve done everything that you should / you’ve been polite and happy / and you’ve worked hard to lose that stupid accent”.

Calle 13 - Atrevete-te-te - One of the most popular reggaeton songs of the decade – poking fun at a girl who listens to “pop-rock Latino”, Green Day and Coldplay and is too snobby for Puerto Rican music. Good use of cumbia clarinets.

Delfin - Vesna - Maudlin Russian electro-pop is very much my jam and Delfin’s glittering Vesna with its single verse (forgive me / it’s spring where I’m going / can you find me?) repeated like an incantation is one of the most affecting things of the decade.

B-Jeans - Ei Saa - Estonian Italodisco packed with twinkling synths and rolled consonants. Estonian pop of the era was still a strange cottage industry where almost everything seemed to be written or produced by one guy – Sven Lohmus. I’m 99% sure this was one of his.

Capleton - Long Time - Almost everything on South Rakkas’ infectious Bionic Ras riddim is good but Capleton’s Long Time is a standout. He’s probably marginally better known for conscious reggae these days but excelled at being silly as well.

Sammi Cheng - 808 - Sammi is probably best known in the West for her acting (Blind Detective, Everlasting Regret, etc) but has sold tens of millions of albums at home. Most of her records are fairly boilerplate Cantopop ballads but 808 has a wonderfully woozy charm.

Two things:

1. Don't forget to vote for Gravenhurst. 'Hollow Men', his only nominated track, is not his most representative song, but it's awesome. The two nominated albums are undeniable masterpieces.

2. Please pay attention to three late-career / career-ending albums that are very much overlooked and/or underrated: In Prism by Polvo, My Heart Has a Wish That You Would Not Go by Aereogramme and The Rising Tide by Sunny Day Real Estate.

All three contain some of their very best songs:

Polvo:
'Beggar's Bowl'
'Lucia'

Aereogramme:
'A Life Worth Living'
'The Running Man'

Sunny Day Real Estate:
'Snibe'
'The Rising Tide'

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 26 September 2019 15:41 (four years ago) link

Following on from Roz' Utada Hikaru recommendation, some of the Japanese / HK stuff I’ll be voting for:

Puffy – Spike (Japanese Version): Famous in the West for their Cartoon Network show but their English-language songs never came close to doing them justice. Spike was mostly produced by Andy Sturmer from Jellyfish and there’s a strong jangle-pop influence to some of the album but it’s vastly better than his own band’s records. Asia No Junshin and Sumire are particular highlights but the whole thing’s a delight.

Faye Wong – Fable: Grand, sweeping, cinematic pop from HK’s greatest superstar. New Tenant and Chanel

Tommy February6 – Tommy Airline: When Tomoko Kawase left the (very pleasant) indie-pop group The Brilliant Green, she started parallel solo careers as Tommy February6, a jovial, alcoholic J-Pop star and Tommy Heavenly6, her goth counterpart / nemesis. None of this made any sense but the records were superb. Sepia Memory and Je t’aime Je t’aime.

Ayumi Hamasaki – Duty: A huge star, and fashion icon, in Japan for twenty years, it’s easy to overlook how amazing her opening run of albums with Max Matsuura’s Avex Trax label was. She could never really sing but they worked around that with anthemic Eurodance and dramatic, noisy pop. Surreal and Vogue.

Utada Hikaru – Exodus: Although I do like Simple & Clean a lot, I was never a fan of Utada Hikaru until her big attempt to extend her Japanese mega-stardom to the US with Exodus. Exodus 04, produced by Timbaland, and the intricate Kremlin Dusk are two of the best.

I suspect no-one (esp the poll runner) is in favour of allowing three *add your non-nominated albums/tracks here*? It's not usance in these polls with a decade spanning poll, with stakes so high (lol), would it be a too hard a breach of etiquette to allow, say, three non-nominated entries on the ballot?

(I know a majority probably detests it but I had to try and ask, regardless)

The error was nominating the wrong hated U2 album. I think How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb would make my top 50, maybe All That You Can't Leave Behind in the right mood, but even I can't get behind No Line on the Horizon

Vinnie, Saturday, 28 September 2019 03:06 (four years ago) link

viva la vida is easily the best coldplay album but there's no chance it'll make my top 50

htdaab and nloth are both pretty dreadful, easily some of the worst u2 albums, but of the two nloth is at least kinda interesting in places and there's the general feeling of maybe it could have been something worthwhile if they hadn't gotten scared and changed paths halfway through recording

it was tough! my ballot is full of pop songs b/c i didn't happen upon my main source for discovering non-mainstream music (ilm) until 09 was nearly through. but i love them dearly and stand by all my choices.

i might have considered putting a particular sufjan stevens track on my ballot but i forgot about it so oh well, there isn't really anything i'd be happy to displace anyhow

Down to 109 albums. What a decade.

In terms of errors, someone seems to have nominated U2.

I sent in a slightly shorter mixed ballot today--35 songs instead of 50--and made up my own point system so that everything averaged out to 53 points per song. I'm really annoying that way. If that doesn't work, just adjust as you see fit (or forget the mixed part and give every song 53 points).

fwiw I almost suggested a demerit system where you could take 20, 40, 60, 80 or 100 points away from a track or album of your choice, perhaps entitled the James Murphy Bonus Prize. fortunately thought better of it

imago, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 22:32 (four years ago) link

Lido came along at just the right time for me, when I had just stopped doing drugs and was out of university with no degree and no job and was fried and sad and not sure what to do with my life, it felt like someone had captured my life and put it on cd, almost in a scary literal way.

Cedars is also very good. 'Almost The Same' might well be their best track.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 22:34 (four years ago) link

my one-sentence review of Lido reads This album is a miracle coalescing from the Sussex sea air and capturing what all British indie ever was attempting to capture on their first goddamn try and really i don't have much to add, it is overwhelmingly resonant with the boredom and joy of being young, British and uncertain. I suppose I could add that the songwriting is exceptionally strong, but it's the mood above all that sustains it. i play it every xmas

imago, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 22:37 (four years ago) link

I was kinda on board for a wee while after, but Lido was kinda sui generis from where I am sat. They gradually degenerated into trad zzzz
er that

Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 22:38 (four years ago) link

Anyway I put FRIGHTENED RABBIT at 2, youse should all check that out, I'm not expecting a great deal of appreciation for it but that was pretty much my life in that period, I didn't get much Sussex sea air I suppose

groovypanda, Friday, 11 October 2019 14:23 (four years ago) link

I voted. Decided to just go with whatever I was into the most these days, made a top 15 or so and then just randomly took enough other tracks or albums from my initial whittling to fill the unranked part of my ballot. It's not exactly fair, but at least it's arbitrary.

It's still open, right? I can vote through midnight tonight?

kornrulez6969, Friday, 11 October 2019 14:31 (four years ago) link

I kind of did what Silverfish did. I found myself throwing out several songs I'd previously rated highly. (BoC's Dawn Chorus is fine, but pretty repetitious and the voice samples completely ruin it for me.) I don't know why I used to consider this song a standout of that album, let alone the decade. One thing that made this poll so much fun is that this is probably my least favorite decade of music since the sixties, and it has caused me to take a closer listen to a lot stuff I missed.

beard papa, Friday, 11 October 2019 15:46 (four years ago) link

Argh, I have 40 albums I definitely want to vote for and like another 40 I probably want to vote for and no time to listen to them all before arbitrarily squeezing them down. And the tracks "shortlist" is still in the hundreds...

Can I submit album and tracks polls separately or will that confuse the system?

(This is fun! Too bad I missed the nominations stage as I won't be able to vote for Cave - "Psychic Psummer" and probably a lot of other stuff I haven't thought of because thinking of it would be a waste of brainpower!)

Submitted! This was way easier than originally anticipated, and highly nostalgic. Not nearly enough quality tracks nominated, but there were so many already present it was easier to cobble together a list. My top 10 albums could all be #1. Would be cool if I could do a reverse mixed ballot where the top 10 were unweighted (tied for 1st) and the rest were weighted.

I don't generally like to nominate tracks because I don't have a good sense of what were actual singles, so I just would pick my favorite songs off the albums I nominate, but putting my tracks list together made me wish I had offered up some nominations because there were definitely some key tracks that should have been on there.

I prefer albums* myself so would enjoy that rolling out first so no complaints from me.

* I never did get round to doing the lifetime of ilm metal tracks poll (did the albums one in 2016) so after this polls all done & dusted I might be able to run the heavy Rock,Noise & Metal tracks poll I promised 3 years ago get it over and done with before the EOY polls in January.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Friday, 11 October 2019 22:23 (four years ago) link

I vote tracks first. There's a likelihood of weirder variety, and listening along makes thread engagement fun and immediate, rather than just thinking your memories of an album. This spurs excitement that can carry on into and energise the albums rollout.

now let's play big lunch take little lunch (sic), Friday, 11 October 2019 22:34 (four years ago) link

I left the house today and bought clear liquor with a genuine intention to do a tracks ballot, but i opened the doc and fuck you for this oppressively hard task, nah I'm closing this and walking away, also I looked at the albums ballot I submitted the other night and this is bafflingly wrong, I'll stand by it due to some In Vino Veritas bullshit but I'm apologising right now for not even noticing The Meadowlands on the list, what is on there is all in the wrong order, I've picked the wrong albums for the one-album-per-artist self-imposed nonsense, che vergogna. It's all good stuff though, nah fuckit this is my truth. Tracks would have been well different, just cos of different mode of consumption, but I'm not up to it and I'm ultimately responsible for the life choices that led me to this place

We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed by Los Campesinos! came with two badges, "wab" and "wad". "wad" is still on my jacket cos yeah, I'm still wearing the same jacket, what of it? last time I saw "wab" it was getting on a train to London, who knows what became of it? I hope it is doing well and finally found the family it was looking for. The album is at number... six on my list, apparently. I would say it deserved more, it meant a lot to me, but the five above it are pretty fucken good, so lets just go with that. And that's the dilemma I have with every single album here, and why I amn't even considering any resubmission, too much heavy shit involved with every consideration, is that better that that? But then again, that was playing then, and, and... My former fiancee was born in Kortedala, but I remembered when we heard that Jens song for the first time, and that was from that Jens album... I take this shit seriously, and that's why I have to be drunkit to to do this, and that's why I can't do it at all, and btw I have so much love for all of you and your capacity to do better than me

my phone has lost the power to use the internet, so it'll be 'while I'm at home' basically, which, tomorrow, means 'UK afternoon, and very late evening' - might post 10 either side of the jump. will def try to get it going tomorrow

imago, Sunday, 13 October 2019 12:43 (four years ago) link

do we still want remix votes as part of the numbers for songs? i'm a bit torn because remixes are functionally completely different listening experiences...on the other hand, people might have still voted for the originals. what do we think. NOT THAT THIS CHANGES TOO MUCH *taps nose*

imago, Sunday, 13 October 2019 12:45 (four years ago) link

Add them together I say, voted for some remixes where I could have just as easily voted for the original (heartbeats, forever more). Seems unfair to punish a track for having another excellent version of itself

or something, Sunday, 13 October 2019 13:55 (four years ago) link

i think the only version of “forever more” nominated was the remix. regardless i have no opinion about this, both approaches have their merits

american bradass (BradNelson), Sunday, 13 October 2019 13:56 (four years ago) link

one might argue that when a track is remixed, it is no longer itself. also a 'divorced' approach celebrates remixes as discrete entities, of which several are in the top 100 under their own steam! i've asked seandalai to send the version of the rundown with remixes separated and i'll make a decision based on what you all say here + my gut instinct...

imago, Sunday, 13 October 2019 13:59 (four years ago) link

no to combining remixes

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Sunday, 13 October 2019 14:19 (four years ago) link

Remixes separate imo

nashwan, Sunday, 13 October 2019 14:22 (four years ago) link

why wouldn't we combine remixes? we do during the EOY polls, and it gives a disadvantage to tracks that have a popular remix or more than one remix.

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Sunday, 13 October 2019 14:25 (four years ago) link

it doesn't sit entirely right with me

fyi the only changes would be cosmetic, except for one unlucky song lol, but do we not love drama here?

imago, Sunday, 13 October 2019 14:28 (four years ago) link

were that many remixes even in there? keep them separate imo

gyac, Sunday, 13 October 2019 14:30 (four years ago) link

you cannot perform the same track twice but remixing is not the same as sampling, keeping the title is a choice to maintain the link the original, & it's ilx convention

imago, Sunday, 13 October 2019 14:59 (four years ago) link

covers don't usually function in the same way (never heard of a cover version included on a single) so I can't imagine it being an issue, but if there was a case where the cover version did come out immediately and was v much part of the same thing (a la mike flowers pops or frankee f u right back or whatever) and there was real split enthusiasm then sure, bundle them together. has anyone ever voted for an original and a remix? ofc no one thought you had to. splitting them serves no practical purpose other than making them less likely to show up.

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Sunday, 13 October 2019 15:02 (four years ago) link

has anyone ever voted for an original and a remix?

Perhaps not but e.g. I didn't consider voting for "Everything in Its Right Place" bc the nominated track was a remix (that came out 9 years later than the original). The Aphex Twin remix of "Heroes" does work pretty differently from the original track. I can easily think of cover songs that are more faithful. It's not at all obvious to me that imago's original impulse was wrong.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 13 October 2019 15:08 (four years ago) link

the faithfulness of covers is not the issue. I think once a track is nominated you should be able to vote for whichever version you like and in the rollout the most popular version should be listed with a breakdown of votes for other versions. having the same song showing up twice would be stupid, in practice tho they're just less likely to appear

ogmor, Sunday, 13 October 2019 15:12 (four years ago) link

Covers are the same song but not the same track. Remixes are not necessarily either, although they do use recorded material from the original track.xp

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 13 October 2019 15:13 (four years ago) link

I'm fine either way but I don't see why the rule should be changed at this point.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 13 October 2019 15:17 (four years ago) link

although I actually like "Mr. Brightside" so maybe we should combine them and give an extra vote to "Everything".

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 13 October 2019 15:18 (four years ago) link

i think trying to carefully preserve the integrity of the ideal object doesn't acknowledge how music functions. all sound is queer. i want to specifically vote for a milli as played through my old desktop pc speakers

ogmor, Sunday, 13 October 2019 15:25 (four years ago) link

in the rollout the most popular version should be listed with a breakdown of votes for other versions.

i understand that the votes of the different versions would be consolidated. that seems a fair compromise then.

If you merge and show the breakdown then people can adjust in their heads if they feel it's an injustice? Harder to do it the other way round.

counted separately, but the merge and show numbers approach is a good compromise.

beard papa, Sunday, 13 October 2019 16:54 (four years ago) link

OKAY

a decision has been reached, albeit a painful one

We will go by ILX convention and merge numbers

the pros very slightly outweigh the cons

believe me, I wanted to throw this convention in the trash as (having listened to one of the potential casualties) the remix was absolutely nothing like the original, but when it came down to it, the fact I hadn't specified beforehand that remixes would be counted separately was the clincher

we will hopefully begin rollouts tomorrow, with maybe even a few tonight if tt's ready...

(never heard of a cover version included on a single)

I can immediately think of three examples

although I’m opposed to any Lu Contless version of Mr Brightside placing, merging and noting is the least damaging option given the lack of clarity. iirc the Friendly Fires version of Paris wasn’t nominated, so we’ll be spared that particular travesty of merging

I probably won't read an article with that title but it is possible to recognize the mutability and subjectivity of sonic experience (and to have taught remixing for a few years) and still think that remixes should be recognized as distinct pieces of work in their own right. No beef with imago's decision, though.

My mistake, no idea how I didn't check. But won't matter in the overall results because no one else will vote for it.
