can confirm the pedro album sounds good. def gains steam (as much steam as a pedro album can gain) as it goes. i really liked circle k and quietest friend on first pass, and the final track for sure. i do wish his vox were recessed just a tad more in the mix. i have the same complaint with most of his solo stuff as well. im definitely going to spend more time with it when its released tomorrow.

I'm enjoying the new Forests album. It's a little midwest, mathy sound and most of the songs end stronger than they begin.

Beyond excited for the new PUP album - The Dream is Over is one of my absolute favourite pop punk releases of the decade.

current rankings for me:

— in moton (perfect alb)
— beneath medicine tree (feels a little more of its time than the others but it's all wrapped in a sweet concept which still resonates with me)
— eat sleep repeat (beginning to stretch out a little on this one, I saw them in san antonio during this tour) title track is a top 5 copeland track for me)
— you are my sunshine (was losing touch with this type of music a bit around this time, not as deeply engrained in me but it it is great)
— ixora (admittedly need to spend more time with this, and ixora twin)

not a bad or even ok album in the discography. they havent missed yet.

marcos smart (Spottie), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:35 (five years ago) link

in motion is def perfect

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:35 (five years ago) link

it's really tied with sunshine in that ranking

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:36 (five years ago) link

not sure what it is about ixora but it's a perfect union of consistent mood and aaron marsh's songwriting expanding to previously unmet horizons. "erase" is some kind of perfect song

if i had to guess blushing seems like it's gonna be the indoor record to ixora's outdoors

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:41 (five years ago) link

i also really love esr and bmt they're all good

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:44 (five years ago) link

lol that PUP video has so much going on, it's crazy. I admire a band that can totally eclipse their own song by overloading you with visual content!

New Martha is sounding very charming.

tangenttangent, Monday, 4 February 2019 11:24 (five years ago) link

I just found out because of this new album: https://mikekrol.bandcamp.com/album/power-chords

Listening to his first and second albums will cost you a combined 35 minutes and I highly recommend it. The most fun power pop in the world, and that's saying something.

tangenttangent, Monday, 4 February 2019 11:44 (five years ago) link

I honestly don't know if post-hardcore belongs here or in Rolling Metal but I saw Humanities, Ultra Love, and Dark Plains on the weekend and it was a really good show. Humanities recall Fugazi but are heavier, with some good noisy moments; probably some Shotmaker in there. Dark Plains is actually comprised of former members of Shotmaker, Okara, and Metz, and get into some almost pigfuck-like territory; sometimes even some blues-rock-informed riffs and cool lead guitar bits that I sometimes wish went on longer. I was most surprised by Ultra Love, whose Arpin produced a really satisfying wash of noise and dissonance, with tuneful bits, on a Les Paul in something of a post-metal/gaze dirge context.

new Pup is really strong, a solid step up, and even a little chopsy in places

Simon H., Tuesday, 2 April 2019 23:30 (five years ago) link

ok my ears aren't totally nuts

I definitely get not wanting classical training, especially for a punk band.

Stefan: Yeah, I mean, Zack and Steve and Nestor all really understand music theory and they’re incredible musicians, and I’d say that understanding of music theory hasn’t hurt them creatively. But, for me, every time I’ve tried to label things with the guitar, like, “this is this chord and this is the theory behind why these chords work together” or whatever, it’s really just causing more agony than anything. I’m sure Zack’s had a different experience because he’s a classically fantastic musician, as well as a great punk musician.

Zack: I don’t know about that, but yeah it’s definitely helped because Stefan has a kind of unorthodox approach to writing songs — by that I mean writing melodically without paying super close to attention to how even the bars are or how rhythmically it fits together — so he somehow accidentally falls into these really interesting time signatures, and I guess just taking some lessons and being a nerd about music and having this so-called training has helped me a lot in adapting to that and not trying to squeeze the song into a 4/4 box, which I think we’ve accomplished really well. And at the same time, our guitar player Steve is trained, so to speak. He went to school for jazz guitar, but he sort of presents his own version of what punk is. To me — it’s a broader interpretation — but, in the grander sense, punk is sort of about going against what’s normal, whether that means you’re a great guitar player and you prefer to do something weird, or you’re expressing yourself against all odds and against a lack of training, I think those both can be punk.

Simon H., Wednesday, 3 April 2019 00:16 (five years ago) link

That's such a nice excerpt to help explain their weird flavour of (dis)synchrony. Oh I love the new album so much! Through its darknesses it's still exhilaratingly fun. I'm seeing them on Wednesday - five days to learn all the lyrics!

This PUP gig was the apotheosis of London fans having been starved for so many months... The entire crowd was a hysterical mosh pit and PUP were deeply crowd pleasing and charming. They touted a London charity for assisting disadvantaged children into music schools that literally everyone gave money to. A small token, but the kind of offering that should be more foregrounded in gigs in general. Also they played an extra-long set to be nice. My voice is totally shredded.

Just caught up on everything itt. I loved the pronoun album and the new Remo Drive (not sure why everyone's hating on it so much?). I had listened to a random track on that Thank You Scientist album and assumed it wasn't for me, so I'm grateful to have revisited it. When it hits, it's so good.

I've got to rep for this Weatherday album again because it is start to finish incredible and has the best album art of the year and is possibly even album of the year. The rawest, loudest lo-fi emo. It's so inventive and goes so hard - just listen to the first ten seconds of the album! Below is one of the shorter songs as a sample of just how awesome this album can be, but the real highlight is the 14-minute track at the heart of it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BD_oGwbmqFo

While I'm here, I've got to also recommend the equally difficult to categorise and wonderful Glass Beach. This is a bit sparklier sounding... A bit like if Hellogoodbye had been heavier and into prog and insane time signatures.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R4JcZbDvy8

Also the new Prince Daddy and the Hyena is wild if you like stuff like New Found Glory at their best and PUP.

tangenttangent, Friday, 15 November 2019 20:46 (four years ago) link

is it a small venue bc he doesn't have such a big following in uk or a big church? when he plays philly/jersey/ny area he always sells out moderate sized venues (sold out two nights in philly during this most recent tour)

alpine static, Friday, 6 December 2019 23:57 (four years ago) link

Yeah, this is good. Is "Midwest Emo" really a genre? That's how RYM labels this, though apparently the band is from DC?

o. nate, Saturday, 7 December 2019 03:03 (four years ago) link

yeah it's a common enough term. the origin of it is that the 90s jangly/mathy second-wave emo scene was most prominent in the us midwest.

american bradass (BradNelson), Sunday, 8 December 2019 17:05 (four years ago) link

I've listened a bunch - it's grown off me a tiny bit just because the vocals and lyrics seem a little undistinguished but they're clearly a hell of a band, I love the video game music influence

Simon H., Monday, 9 December 2019 05:02 (four years ago) link

Once again something I'd call "emo-adjacent", but on first listen Holy Fawn's Death Spells is kinda scratching my Juno itch, distended and surprisingly aggressive songs with a dense thicket of tones. Not sure yet if the songs are all there but the sound is great. (I guess it was technically issued last year but only made its streaming debut in 2019)

I quite liked their first eps and that first record. they've got rid of the hopeful, earnestness that I liked about them and doubled down on rock cliche.

I'm a little late on this one, but if you love The Maine or fellow southwesterners Anarbor (their tracks "Freaking Out!" and "Every High Has a Come Down" especially), check out "Twilight (My Heaven) from Philly band Grayscale. This rowdy, driving tune is loaded with those little elements that you'll find in most great songs, like a glorious pre-chorus, a bass-drum fill (!) midway through the chorus amidst the huge harmonies, and a few moments of silence amidst it all; and it just sounds fantastic blasting on your car stereo with the windows down. ("Baby Blue", another standout track of theirs from '19 album Nella Vita, is in the spirit of The 1975's "She's American")
