Time travel got claimed by the bleeps (or were they bloops?) and YOUR ILLUSTRIOUS HOST has selected to further personalise this, the cream of 2019's psych/avant/weird-pop litany.

We begin our cosmic roundel with LOST CROWNS, surely to be confirmed in the pantheon upon the January 25 release of their debut album Every Night Something Happens. Here's a taste:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guTLvKG3IZM

YOUR OWN contributions are gleefully accepted, but heed: they ought herk, and jerk.

(h/t Tim for the name!)

Are we going to include indiepop here? I think we are. The following Of Montreal-esque wonder was shown to me by tt and on first listen I'm blown away. Behold...Scary Jokes

Cheer-Accident vibes on the first track

:)

it's all monstrously brilliant but the odd-numbered tracks stand out from the even-numbered ones, perhaps

'she saved me' might be the pick. what an exceptionally beautiful composition

imago, Saturday, 26 January 2019 23:46 (five years ago) link

man you weren't kidding about this album, this is great

also reminds me that I haven't heard the second Stars in Battledress album yet

You must see to that then frogbs, The Women From The Ministry is their finest song.

^^^Will get to it eventually

I can't remember if anyone else here is a fan of The Mercury Tree but in any case they've gone all microtonal
https://themercurytree.bandcamp.com/album/spidermilk

Yeah I'm well into that already - a certain musical ilxor hipped me to them in private recently. It's great! I've not heard the whole thing yet but it is surely going to end up one of my favourite recent records - the songwriting instincts are all there on top of the microtones

imago, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 14:59 (four years ago) link

microtonal

Sold.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:02 (four years ago) link

I mean, I'd already heard the previous one (through you iirc), but I was hipped to the new one.

imago, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:03 (four years ago) link

Cool :D My memory's quite bad when it comes to that sort of thing

I admit I find this one a bit of a struggle but I'll get there

It feels like they've learnt a lesson or two from Cheer-Accident

I've been listening a little to some singeli, mostly off a tip from ultros' rym page. I'm down for the most part, but I do always catch myself wishing it was more of a headfuck. However, I do think it's herky-jerky enough for the thread...

(on 2nd thought, that might not have been the best track to post.

This is from the album ultros actually reviewed, & is probably the closest it came to slaking my thirst for bonkers underground shit)

It’s funny how singeli pops up on different threads every now and then (Rolling Global Outernational, Rolling Experimentalist Electronic/Misfit Club Music and the like).
We also discussed the Sounds of Sisso compilation for a bit on last year’s Rolling Afropop thread.
But there was never much of a follow-up, so I’m very happy to being alerted to that Jay Mitta album. Can’t wait to check it out. Thank you for that, herky-jerky Drugs A. Money!

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 28 May 2019 13:43 (four years ago) link

Yeah I never thought to bring that up here, I need to listen to more of that stuff.

Also the Emme Phyzema albums were far better than I was expecting tbqh, very complex and a little menacing. One track off Dispelling Differences reminds me of Psudoku.

I keep thinking there's prob a dog latin thread somewhere that deserves some singeli in it too haha xp to breastcrawl

NSRO have a new album out covering songs from Rock Bottom, in case you missed it:

My BF pointed out that I had actually already heard some of it as he'd put a couple of tracks on a mix he'd made. Pfffft my brain keeps nothing in. Still rules though.

file under: Zappa minus Zappa

btw I just realized the Duke album is basically that one bonkers section of "Peking O" extended to 40 minutes

frogbs, Thursday, 8 August 2019 21:01 (four years ago) link

there are some really inspired moments on the delorians record. zappa minus zappa is accurate lol, cause one of the first things i thought of was jean-luc ponty.

Kings Kaleidoscope are bringing the Lord's herky-jerky in 2019! It's about time the Christian rock scene went indieprog tbh

My son loves them, wants me to take him to their upcoming show. I think they are fun and silly, if not exactly mindblowing.

I love them but can see why others might not

imago, Sunday, 22 September 2019 21:46 (four years ago) link

Sorry for continuing to pollute this thread, imago. I have no idea where this goes; I'm not at all confident that it's blackgaze enough for rolling metal, but it's a absolutely nowhere near herky-jerky either, as I understand it. I'm posting it here bcz I think you might like it as it's kind of like Sigur Ros goes Bonkers in Phoenix

Charlie Cawood's second solo album sounding great so far - classical chamber pop, basically, but with a certain melodic sensibility I have been known to enjoy

Hey imago do you know about Collider yet

PLEB AF (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 2 January 2020 09:07 (four years ago) link

I feel like they might be the Medicine-Game Theory amalgam of my dreams

PLEB AF (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 2 January 2020 09:15 (four years ago) link

obviously was humming some Loud Family to myself as I opened this thread haha

will have to give them a go

imago, Thursday, 2 January 2020 10:13 (four years ago) link

Meh don't hold me to that, I was stoned when I posted that, I hear some of Miller in the melodies and vocals, but really musically it's a lot busier and more herky-jerky in the intended sense than anything I've heard on a Game Theory record

I can't speak with any authority about them, but maybe the Cardiacs are a more appropriate reference point? Like maybe 'Cardiacs-meet-Medicine'? I wish ultros was still here...

PLEB AF (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 3 January 2020 04:11 (four years ago) link

I listened to it! Wouldn't say Cardiacs at all, maybe a bit of Game Theory. Reminded me most of Swirlies, really. Plenty of promise!

imago, Friday, 3 January 2020 11:37 (four years ago) link

I hear traces of Monsoon Bassoon too.

oh that's not a bad shout yeah

imago, Friday, 3 January 2020 22:35 (four years ago) link

Swirlies/Medicine (esp the later albums)/Monsoon Bassoon/Marnie Stern and probably some Japanese producer's covert math/shoegaze-tronic band fronted by a dozen moody schoolgirls who are all named after different styles of hat.
