i didn't know Tame Impala was big enough to headline, things have changed for them.

Bee OK, Friday, 4 January 2019 04:45 (five years ago) link

i know very little about the electronic stuff, but otherwise this is a pretty great lineup, i think.

alpine static, Friday, 4 January 2019 04:47 (five years ago) link

78 year-old Calypso Rose from Trinidad & Tobago!

My 11yo stepkid is a fan of Khalid, and I didn't introduce her to his music, which means he really is that big imo. She's my barometer by who's actually famous these days lol. Other acts on this bill she's into: Ariana, Zedd, Billie Eilish, Kero Kero Bonito, Blackpink.

when did rufus du sol get second line of coachella big, i didnt think they were comparable in popularity to any other names at that tier

ufo, Saturday, 5 January 2019 03:32 (five years ago) link

itt - me realizing that my knowledge of Jaden Smith’s music career and the fact that Khalid is everywhere on top40 radio sets me apart from at least some contingent of ilm

Also not that I’m ever in a position to go to this thing but I’m a big fan of the 2019 lineup, I can chart a reasonable course through Friday’s acts that would basically be heaven for me

You can't see it but I had an epiphany (Champiness), Saturday, 5 January 2019 04:08 (five years ago) link

Calendar marked... only the first weekend is streamed, yeah?

get your hand outta my pocket universe (morrisp), Friday, 12 April 2019 20:17 (five years ago) link

they will actually stream, for the first time, weekend two as well but will be a bit different

For the first time ever, YOUTUBE MUSIC will keep the cameras rolling on Weekend 2, with a carefully curated live stream. COACHELLA CURATED, hosted by KCRW's JASON BENTLEY, will offer a slate of original content — encore and live performances, artist commentary, mini-docs, animated adventures and more — to accompany live music and in-studio interviews with performers.

5:55 p.m. – Kacey Musgraves (1) is now ON. didn't she do well in ILM's album countdown from last year? will have to check this out.

she is sort of amazing!

Bee OK, Saturday, 13 April 2019 01:08 (five years ago) link

that was so fucking good, Kacey Musgraves has a new fan!

Bee OK, Saturday, 13 April 2019 01:47 (five years ago) link

i hope at least one other ILXor will join me for The 1975 later tonight.

peace

Wow.

the future is now, Saturday, 13 April 2019 03:31 (five years ago) link

i'll be here for the 1975. and Glover. and maybe others.

Kacey was great!

alpine static, Saturday, 13 April 2019 03:45 (five years ago) link

Blackpink's live performances can be patchy but they're kind of killing this set. A good show for K-pop's Coachella debut.

If there was ever a time to be on form it's now.

what a set so far!

alpine static, Saturday, 13 April 2019 04:51 (five years ago) link

i mean not like it's a bunch of old nuggets from the early EPs or whatever, just all the singles from the new album :)

alpine static, Saturday, 13 April 2019 04:52 (five years ago) link

They are like the Modern day Talking Heads

Bee OK, Saturday, 13 April 2019 04:54 (five years ago) link

Somebody Else is one of my all time favorites

Bee OK, Saturday, 13 April 2019 05:03 (five years ago) link

this band is so fucking good. love it if we made it is just fucking massive.

alpine static, Saturday, 13 April 2019 05:20 (five years ago) link

i swear they should just finish their albums, then send them to me to trim off 15 or 20 minutes every time, and then release *that*, and they'd be the best band in the world. as it is they're pretty darn close and they release bloated albums.

live, though ... killer.

alpine static, Saturday, 13 April 2019 05:22 (five years ago) link

Haha

Rock and Roll is Dead

The 1975

Bee OK, Saturday, 13 April 2019 05:27 (five years ago) link

11:15 p.m. – Charlotte Gainsbourg (2)
11:25 p.m. – Childish Gambino (1)
11:30 p.m. – Nora En Pure (3)
12:00 a.m. – DJ Snake (2)
12:05 a.m. – Kayzo (3)

still to come and two or maybe even more could also be great

Bee OK, Saturday, 13 April 2019 05:33 (five years ago) link

Life has come up, checking out

Bee OK, Saturday, 13 April 2019 05:37 (five years ago) link

The 1975 promoting Brief Inquiry into Janelle Monáe promoting Dirty Computer turning out to be a surprisingly cohesive twofer
(Helps that I think something prior to The 1975 overran so there was very little time between the set streams)

You can't see it but I had an epiphany (Champiness), Saturday, 13 April 2019 05:48 (five years ago) link

highlight among highlights might've been I Like America & America Likes Me ... shit was intense.

alpine static, Saturday, 13 April 2019 05:50 (five years ago) link

Donald Glover's got a grey-ass beard, man!

alpine static, Saturday, 13 April 2019 07:15 (five years ago) link

Strong showing from the Childish Gambino set. We're clearly living in a post-Beychella world re: the camerawork these headliners get but Glover would have owned that stage either way.
Also sweet to see Janelle giving him a pep-talk when they followed him backstage, after she'd shouted him out in her set beforehand.

You can't see it but I had an epiphany (Champiness), Saturday, 13 April 2019 08:02 (five years ago) link

So bummed that Aphex Twin are playing tonight but won't be on YouTube

Bee OK, Saturday, 13 April 2019 23:13 (five years ago) link

05:00 p.m. – "Guava Island: A Childish Gambino Film" (1,2,3)

Bee OK, Sunday, 14 April 2019 00:31 (five years ago) link

that Childish Gambino set was pretty great, imo, though it was very clearly Beychella Lite. like he was aiming for the same sort of feel and scale, but he couldn't get anywhere near it, because ... welll ... she's Bey and he's not.

the song where everything turned red and he went out in the crowd and was singing in a different language (or gibberish) ... does anyone know what song that was (if it was a song)?

alpine static, Sunday, 14 April 2019 02:09 (five years ago) link

Weezer in 2019 huh?

Bee OK, Sunday, 14 April 2019 03:44 (five years ago) link

Rivers seems like he has a little bit of brain damage

alpine static, Sunday, 14 April 2019 03:52 (five years ago) link

i interviewed the bassist for Weezer one time. he was exceedingly nice. i alwsays wonder what he thinks of this band, besides the fact that it's an excellent paycheck.

alpine static, Sunday, 14 April 2019 04:00 (five years ago) link

like is he empowered in the least to have input on band decisions/operations? or does he literally show up when they say to show up and do what he's told to do? what about the other two guys that have been there since the beginning?

alpine static, Sunday, 14 April 2019 04:04 (five years ago) link

All the hits

Bee OK, Sunday, 14 April 2019 04:07 (five years ago) link

Really? Tears for Fears

Bee OK, Sunday, 14 April 2019 04:08 (five years ago) link

Oh with guest vocals, that's better

Bee OK, Sunday, 14 April 2019 04:09 (five years ago) link

I originally thought it was going to be like some Africa cover

That was cool

Bee OK, Sunday, 14 April 2019 04:12 (five years ago) link

i'm sorry but yes this performance is pretty robotic and yes Rivers has to be the most desperately thirsty rock star ever but also this band can pull more perfect pop-rock songs out of their catalog than most.

alpine static, Sunday, 14 April 2019 04:30 (five years ago) link

I agree with that. Really generic show but those songs are some serious ear candy

Bee OK, Sunday, 14 April 2019 04:50 (five years ago) link

Four Tet are one of my favorite brands

Bee OK, Sunday, 14 April 2019 04:54 (five years ago) link

Bee OK, Sunday, 14 April 2019 05:16 (five years ago) link

If anyone had any doubt about what a massive star BE is, this should put it to rest. The crowd is singing along loudly to every single line.

Roz, Sunday, 14 April 2019 05:27 (five years ago) link

Lol Vince Staples just came on as a guest but his mic was off. Yikes.

Roz, Sunday, 14 April 2019 05:29 (five years ago) link

I had no doubt. And I like her stuff. She's great! But I'm afraid I don't quite get what it is about her that inspires such enthusiasm and devotion in such large numbers. (But that's OK, I am not exactly the target market, either.)

Maybe she was supposed to, but said f that due to the sound issues? Apparently she couldn’t hear in either earpiece.

I wondered at first why Childish Gambino didn’t come out for “Break Your Heart...” — they’ve been talking about that — but my guess is they’ll do it the 2nd weekend, when Diddy/Ma$e aren’t there.

A loud helicopter woke me up around 3:30am, and I was convinced it was one of those high-rollers flying back in from Coachella (maybe landing at Van Nuys)... sort of shook my fist, lol... now I don’t know why I was so convinced (but I’d still bank on that hypothesis).

DT, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 22:15 (five years ago) link

It’s almost a fact by now that almost everyone at Coachella are there fueled by social media and the music is just background noise. If you’re in there solely for the music there’s 10 other festivals nearby where you can see the same artists for 1/4 of the cost.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 22:49 (five years ago) link

well, there obviously aren't, because of radius clauses. or on the other hand, it's a year since the festival and the new lineup of Soulwax haven't played the US outside of California.
