this Sugar & Spice EP is wonderful: dream-pop that could have come straight out of 1991, completely derivative in sound but so vividly melodic.

lots of little mostalgic flourishes like the Robin Guthrie style droning guitar on Bad Guy or the way her voice slides up and down on Sugar & Spice like Harriet Wheeler, I can already hear the "it's all been done before what's the point" criticisms but I think there's a charming effortlessness on show.

boxedjoy, Friday, 20 July 2018 09:24 (three years ago) link

lol this year's Shambhala thread is about 40% Hatchie content alone.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 July 2018 12:18 (three years ago) link

yeah i've been enjoying her tracks the last few months, heard one in the coffee shop and was like, cool, this cocteau twins revival is going even deeper than i thought. her hooks are good too is the thing. bought the EP from the label at a record fair recently and they assured me a full-length was coming!

dreadful choice of artist names though, given how much of the potential audience is already familiar with waxahatchee. might as well have called herself "leigh bells," "tea projectors," "royer," or "eever ray."

This is a total Jeff Porcaro. (Doctor Casino), Friday, 20 July 2018 13:12 (three years ago) link

I bought this digital EP but have yet to listen. You're right, the name feels market tested, precision-focused on the demographic seeking a middle ground between Waxahatchee and Halsey.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 20 July 2018 14:08 (three years ago) link

i saw her live last week and she was excellent despite not having that much material yet

ufo, Friday, 20 July 2018 14:18 (three years ago) link

I’ve found that if you listen to the EP twice in a row it makes the perfect dream pop album.

Tim F, Saturday, 21 July 2018 02:50 (three years ago) link

^ I should do that. I've come back to "Sure" about a gazillion times since it was the Shambhala thread, but other tracks are yet to stick with me in the same way.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 21 July 2018 02:59 (three years ago) link

I was delighted to learn in said thread that she doubles as a member of Babaganouj and is the vocalist on "Would You Like Me?," which is the best Velocity Girl homage I've ever heard and a song I listened to a thousand times before I even knew there was any connection.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 21 July 2018 03:11 (three years ago) link

market tested, precision-focused

everything about this feels this way, but that doesn't mean she didn't write herself a perfect and timeless song in "Sure"

alpine static, Sunday, 22 July 2018 07:56 (three years ago) link

I think my favourite is “Bad Guy” for those “Just Like Honey” vibes.

Tim F, Sunday, 22 July 2018 08:05 (three years ago) link

Guys, her name is Harriette. I believe Hatchie is just a nickname. Maybe her friends and family are secretly a focus group?

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 22 July 2018 11:44 (three years ago) link

That is a disgusting nickname for Harriet(te), lol

imago, Sunday, 22 July 2018 12:18 (three years ago) link

it's a very australian nickname yeah lol

ufo, Sunday, 22 July 2018 13:02 (three years ago) link

my comment that it feels focus-grouped has nothing to do w/ her name.

alpine static, Sunday, 22 July 2018 19:56 (three years ago) link

and btw i love it/her. i guess what i'm saying is it's very polished for being so early in her career, and slightly lacking in personality, too. reminds me of early Tame Impala, which felt like scientists had genetically engineered a psych-pop band in a lab.

alpine static, Sunday, 22 July 2018 19:56 (three years ago) link

that's kinda what I love about it though, those big Katy Perry-style choruses are what makes her stand out from the sea of similar stuff

boxedjoy, Sunday, 22 July 2018 19:59 (three years ago) link

I was basically taking issue with korny's observation:

You're right, the name feels market tested, precision-focused on the demographic seeking a middle ground between Waxahatchee and Halsey.

Another great song! This is one of my most anticipated albums of the year.

kitchen person, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 05:17 (two years ago) link

she was pretty good just now! played two other new songs from the album: "unwanted guest" which was similar in style to "without a blush" with a darker, almost nine inch nails-ish verse and then a huge shoegaze-pop chorus, and "her own heart" which was a ballad in 6/8 that made me think 'shoegaze taylor swift'

ufo, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 11:17 (two years ago) link

also charles from babaganouj was her lead guitarist and he was comically dramatic at that

kitchen person, Saturday, 15 June 2019 05:46 (two years ago) link

I'm very jealous. I was hoping it would leak, but nothing so far.
Ah well, it's only 6 days now...

fragglerock, Saturday, 15 June 2019 20:20 (two years ago) link

Remember when most albums used to leak 2 or 3 months early. Nowadays it seems to be 24 hours if that, which is probably a good thing.

groovypanda, Monday, 17 June 2019 10:13 (two years ago) link

But why thou? For us, the listeners, I'd take an early leak over the excitement any day.
For the artist, people who are gonna buy the record, are gonna buy the record. (I know I will, it's on my Bandcamp wishlist already.)
And everyone else is going to stream it anyway. And there is virtually no difference in what an artist earns on streams versus having their music pirated/leaked.

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Saturday, 22 June 2019 16:06 (two years ago) link

I like this album, though I don't think so for the same reasons I liked her early string of singles. This one exists outside of early 90s sonic nostalgia where those past songs were time traveling. But I'll tell you what this album *does* remind me of, though... Sky Ferreira's album.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 23 June 2019 13:04 (two years ago) link

Some food songs here, some skippable.
The songs that somewhat like Cocteau Twins are better imo

nostormo, Sunday, 23 June 2019 15:40 (two years ago) link

This is a bit more restrained and subdued than I was expecting but it is easily tying with Charly Bliss for my own AOTY

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 18:05 (two years ago) link

The SVIIB comparison feels particularly apt - this does a similar thing in that it looks forward but with obvious influences, whereas the EP felt more like a well-performed recreation of its inspirations

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 18:08 (two years ago) link

Today's pitchfork review was pretty harsh-- it reads more like 5.0 than the 6.5 they gave it.

I do take issue with this line though:

For an artist so laser-focused on pop production, Pilbeam’s songwriting is unapologetically sophomoric.

because she's talking about the lyrics, which is not the first thing I think of when I think of "songwriting", plus I'm not sure how important lyrics are with dream pop.

enochroot, Thursday, 27 June 2019 12:23 (two years ago) link

makes me wonder how one could be apologetically sophomoric

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 27 June 2019 12:28 (two years ago) link

the classic 'hype the debut EP & early singles / pan the debut album' manoeuvre

the lyrics aren't anything special but they're not embarassingly bad or anything and i thought it was strange the review focused on them so much/ it also feels weird to complain that there's too much dream pop guitar... on a dream pop album. it's not like the album is lacking in variation either

anyway the "born slippy"-esque synths on "stay with me" are the best

ufo, Thursday, 27 June 2019 12:50 (two years ago) link

Is the "Bernard Sumner" guitar pedal commercially available, or did she just nail the right settings?
Because that guitar that comes in at 1:44 on 'Obsessed' is a dead ringer.

enochroot, Thursday, 18 July 2019 19:36 (two years ago) link

Saw her live last night. I think the album has a couple too many midtempo dreampop-by-numbers tracks that weren't especially exciting live, but her voice is great and the momdnt when the guitars crashed in at the end of "Stay with Me" was incredible. She also closed with "Sure," which is still probably my favorite thing she's done.

winters (josh), Friday, 25 October 2019 03:23 (two years ago) link

I think it's one of those albums where everything sounds so pleasant and comforting and familiar that if you listen to it without really focusing on it directly it's easy to just take it for granted.

(seeing her live was also helpful in this regard: no surprises, but it forced me to pay more attention)

Tim F, Friday, 25 October 2019 03:31 (two years ago) link
