Mates, this Takecha record looks like a solid bit of January transfer window business!

i've never heard of Beatdown as a genre before! i like to learn one new thing a day.

scott seward, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 20:15 (two years ago) link

does the name just come from this comp?

more or less

the late great, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 20:19 (two years ago) link

the guys on that comp coined the term to describe their style - which is how the comp got its name - and it caught on among sympathetic producers

the late great, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 20:19 (two years ago) link

I don't think I've ever noticed the genre names on discogs before!

saer, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 20:28 (two years ago) link

genre names are designed to make you think bad records are good and good records are bad, its trickery and obfuscation

i thought i was going to hate the luciano mix because lol tribal bongo minimal but it's actually pretty rad! has kind of a classic boompty beat and just the right amount of electro lock and pop and is hypnotically minimal (in terms of structure) as opposed to annoyingly minimal (no awful mid 2000s computer sound palette)

the late great, Saturday, 6 January 2018 00:45 (two years ago) link

also there's cool submerged chimes

it's a shame i had to buy the OG again!

Cool, DJI, will do.

re: the Moodymann remix of No Ufos mentioned upthread, I think the new vocals are a bummer. They sounded fine in the sample but I was let down when I got the thing in the mail. This is okay with me b/c I didn't have the original, though, and that Luciano version is surprisingly tasty.

davey, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 00:24 (two years ago) link

i'm more into the vocals now than i was before!

the late great, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 00:45 (two years ago) link

yes they are groaningly corny ... but so are most detroit techno vocals? and so are the o.g. version vocals. so they have been growing on me.

Bunker comp feels very much like a 90's techno thing to me, like microhouse or minimal never happened. Even the cover as a Tresor-style homage...

MikoMcha, Thursday, 1 March 2018 11:03 (two years ago) link

Hi bobbinsers - been lurking on this thread for the last few months, having made my first proper effort to get into techno at the end of last year (more from a DnB/UKG/dubstep background dance music wise).

Was checking out the bunker comp on iTunes and pressed the purchase button by mistake! Not regretting it though; although I generally find melodic and minimal stuff to be more accessible at this point there are some great tunes here. I guess my ideal would be a midpoint between this very deep and detailed textural stuff and the broader melodic flourishes of Kompakt.

are you aware of this thing called berghain?

the late great, Thursday, 1 March 2018 18:09 (two years ago) link

Sure, but are you talking about the club or Ostgut Ton? Berghain runs a range of programmed events, increasingly so I'd say.

But sure, there is a 90s "classicism" strain, obv. If that's what you're saying...

MikoMcha, Thursday, 1 March 2018 18:30 (two years ago) link

they have a lot of special events but the main room / panoramabar bookings are still pretty much of a certain vein

mh, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:17 (two years ago) link

there's not an official resident list I know of, but I just remembered this page where someone crunched the data: http://cdm.link/2017/05/berghain-numbers-data-worlds-relentless-techno-club/

mh, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:34 (two years ago) link

xp yeah i was just saying - in my admittedly snarky way - that the 90s techno revival has been in full swing for at least 5-6 years now

oddly enough it doesn't have seem to have changed the fortunes of tresor the label or club much ... though maybe the principals are just old enough now they don't care to put in the effort ...

the late great, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:35 (two years ago) link

I think Tresor just keeps on grinding

mh, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:37 (two years ago) link

yeah just at a much reduced rate!

i am very interested in picking up the SCOPEX collection they just put out ... some discussion on the electro thread awhile back

the late great, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:38 (two years ago) link

I kind of slept on it and I think the vinyl might be sold out, but maybe they'll release it digitally eventually

mh, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:50 (two years ago) link

no vinyl is still available

the late great, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:55 (two years ago) link

Hmmm... let me put it this way, The Bunker release really reminds me of a comp I would have bought in my early 20s, or even a teenager. Not sure why that is...

And I do hear what you're saying of course. I should add I don't think that this record is a landmark release or anything, it just struck me that I hadn't posted on ILM for a while ;)

I was interested in that Dreamy Harbour Tresor collection btw, but found it a bit dull when I checked it, even sorta exhausting to listen to.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:55 (two years ago) link

xp

hardwax has a copy anyway

lots of copies on discogs still at retail (40 EUR)

the late great, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:56 (two years ago) link

i quite liked "dreamy harbour" ... it was my going-to-bed music for awhile

the late great, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:57 (two years ago) link

Are people not feeling Will Long? I think I had previously heard his name via the Sprinkles association but that's about it. I listened to Long Trax II today and while I get why some might call bullshit / naked emperor on this--what he does is really very simple--I sorta love it anyway?

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 19 March 2018 22:40 (two years ago) link

I bought that Long / Sprinkles double CD, it is some of my favorite music, not sure if I prefer w/ or wo overdubs but yeah, v v simple, v effective

niels, Tuesday, 20 March 2018 19:29 (two years ago) link

I love Will Long for his Celer work, have done so for nearly 15 years. I really liked his teaming up with Sprinkles, but Long's new album is just very off-putting, sadly. Pitchfork hit the nail on the head the other day. The gratuitous use of Obama samples, and appropriating along the way by using "black voices" with a result that just isn't up to speed... It's a big fail, the new one. One to forget.

Google Atheist (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 20 March 2018 19:33 (two years ago) link

normally roll my eyes @ p4k and this type of writing but this one gets it right

"Bristol’s Batu is an ambassador of an emerging strain of UK techno that prizes steely textures and linear shapes to an almost psychedelic degree. In this unabashedly peak-time set, recorded on a February night between 5 and 7 a.m., Batu wields that aesthetic like a corkscrew, molding repetitive drum patterns into long, fluid lines that drive cleanly and relentlessly forward. It’s a style of mixing that allows him to drop some pretty mammoth bangers without ever bashing his listeners over the head with them. And when he does diverge from the rolling, four-to-the-floor pulse, the explosions of broken beats sound all the more earth-shattering."

new SW. is sneakily out on wax. Found it sneakily in the new bins at Amoeba in LA. Not online yet though. Quite good!! very richly layered, but too short at 30 mins. Side B is more bobbins, side A is more spacey
