my brother just told me about her. many comparisons to elliott smith, i don't hear it in the guitar playing but definitely the vocals, especially the phrasing, the way they're double/triple tracked, lyrically too. this song is really great, production is fantastic, particularly the sound effects.

i immediately connected with this on the strength of the songwriting and now i'm discovering all the lovely details in the production too. completely agree with all the love for motion sickness
her version of you missed my heart is better than kozelek's original too
― ufo, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 12:03 (six years ago) link
I think she is good ... almost in a way that I am suspicious of ... because I like it too much or too easily? (I think this is what people feel about ALVVAYS.)
Actually, more specifically, I slightly distrust the songwriting I have heard: ticking too many generic attitude boxes. Yet what she does, she does very well, I know. And maybe other songs I have not heard would give me a different view.
She sounds a bit uncannily like Kathleen Edwards - whom I have long admired a lot.
― the pinefox, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 13:58 (six years ago) link
funny that you mention Edwards because to me it's the new Waxahatchee that sounds just like her.
― evol j, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 15:09 (six years ago) link
Anna Tivel has some Kathleen Edwards in her, too. maybe she is a bigger influence on young songwriters than anyone realized. (which would be a good thing.)
― alpine static, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 15:47 (six years ago) link
Edwards is terrific! (In her own generic way, familiar yet with intelligent and crafted twists.)
― the pinefox, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 16:03 (six years ago) link
I heard a bit of this on the NYT Popcast (a bit from Funeral) when they were doing their end of year thing and was really struck by it by but didn't go back to it until I heard her name come up today. It's not subtle or oblique enough for the Elliott Smith comparisons but there's definitely a huge gut punch factor in it, and the ambient/production touches going on are so great.
― in twelve parts (lamonti), Thursday, 11 January 2018 18:09 (six years ago) link
only elliott smith thing that stuck out like a sore thumb was the second line in 'scott street': "open heart, open container." the song doesn't sound that much like 'st. ides heaven,' but the instrumentation + the melodic sensibility really highlights it. other than that I don't hear it.
― flappy bird, Thursday, 11 January 2018 18:21 (six years ago) link
heard "motion sickness" for the first time recently and it really struck me. that first verse is just one of those verses, enough odd little details and turns of phrase to catch me off guard a bit. her vocals are lovely and the touches in the production especially as it swells just so toward the end are really haunting and great.
haven't spent much time with the album yet but i enjoyed it and am looking forward to living with it a bit.

one thing about Motion Sickness ... album version is one of the songs of 2017 for me ... but if you go looking for some of the sessions she has played (like Paste, Tiny Desk ... something else, can't remember) she plays it a little slower, and she tends to slow it down even more on the bridge, and then she emphasizes the slight rhythmic and melodic change in the "I have emotional motion" line after the bridge ... and it's awesome.
well, here's the TIny Desk version, which has piano and vocal harmony with it, unlike, say, the Paste one:

― abcfsk, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 08:03 (five years ago) link
i only heard it right at the end of last year when going through my backlog for eoy season but it instantly went to near the top of my list, an immediate classic to me. so many delightful moments - the "falling" bass on "smoke signals", the way the bridge goes into the final chorus on "motion sickness", that synth choir line near the end of "scott street", when the guitar comes in a minute into "georgia"
thinking about it now it's fairly similar in feeling to this year's kacey musgraves album - singer-songwriter with gorgeous arrangements and lots of beautiful ambience filling up the space
― ufo, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 08:30 (five years ago) link
just to clarify what i was saying: i loved it a year ago, too. put it in the second half of my top 10, i believe.
but you know how a year or two or five later, some of the records in your top 10 kinda fade away and you don't reach for them as much, while a few come into focus as the ones you keep returning to? Alps is one of those for me, at least right now.
so is last year's Manchester Orchestra album.
― alpine static, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 08:44 (five years ago) link

Yeah, it has to be.
About 6 months ago, Mark Wheat, a DJ on our local public indie station (89.3 - "The Current") played Phoebe's "Stranger in the Alps" track "Motion Sickness" immediately before Kenny Rogers & The First Edition's "Just Dropped In", then simply followed it with another song, adding no context or reference. It was one of those rad "I see what you did there!" moments that remind me of just why I care so much about this whole music whathaveyou. The station seems to love rewarding fellow music nerds, as another Current DJ, Mary Lucia, plays Hüsker Dü tracks primarily from the era of their (actual or kayfabe-laden?) rivalry with the Replacements (Paul Westerberg happens to be her brother).

I'm coming around on some songs. It still really annoys me when Conor's voice comes in on the first track. The lyric is one person's story, and it doesn't really make sense for this other voice to come in with octave unison. Phoebe's double tracked voice and the guitars would have been stronger for the song. I like Conor's voice as a lead, but it's not really capable of serving another role.

Absolutely floored to read Amanda Petrusich’s profile of Bridgers and learn she was the singer in that super annoying Apple commercial covering The Pixies’ Gigantic. "i see you" is.... the best song
just got to chinese satellite, another great one. major echoes of the last couple albums by the national, especially in the way the drums and the strings interact. the chorus melody is super strong, feels like it could fit easily into a heroine's torch song in a disney movie.

This seems better than her debut on first listen - I couldn't really get into Stranger aside from "Smoke Signals", "Motion Sickness" and "Scott Street".
Already love "I See You" and "Kyoto". "Chinese Satellite" is incredible, the careful plucking on "Halloween" is gorgeous imo and Oberst isn't on it long enough to be distracting, and I'm a sucker for pretty strings so "Savior Complex" is right up my street.

Fantastic stuff. Huge step up from the first album imo, in terms of - well, in terms of nearly everything. Lyrics, consistency of sound not for the sake of it, not monotonous but because it builds towards something, creates a whole of an arc, and a hugely impressive one. 'I Know the End' is killer, and such a release!
Only quip is that the sonics of 'Garden Song' don't sit well with me at all! Listening through headphones, the warbly sound makes me feel seasick lol.

record sounds amazing imo
Listening now and the kick in Garden Song is sidechained and heavily muffled, it's the sort of pulse you feel in your chest* more than hear, early-00s Kompakt did that a lot but it feels weird it hearing it in this context.
*FWIW that's clearly deliberate given the lyrics and I think it works.
― Matt DC, Monday, 22 June 2020 13:41 (three years ago) link
It also think it's deliberate and applaud her for it, it just makes me - I should have said this earlier, obviously - 'motion sick' :)

― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 22 June 2020 13:52 (three years ago) link
yeah the more i read that and listen along with the record i agree, though also i feel like "graceland too" and "savior complex" are too spacious and sparkling to be slushed together
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 22 June 2020 13:53 (three years ago) link
it's a really good atmosphere the built around these songs, cloudy and clear in just the right amounts, and when the clouds appear they're huge cf. all the production touches on the title track

Feel like this is really what's making me not grasp onto this album too. I like a lot of parts of it but not the whole. I find it too distant and ethereal (or smushy) sonically and even with repeated listens that isn't changing.
Definitely feel that's the point of the production style too. Maybe it'll hit me differently at some point in the future.
― in twelve parts (lamonti), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 10:19 (three years ago) link
i feel that all this heavy-handed studio production is impeding her and it's such a shame. the new bright eyes record is the same. i used to love listening to BE for mogis' creative production, and it's completely absent from their new songs, it all just sounds distorted and sterile. though phoebe's production is more creative... the arrangements for ICU are top.
in her 'what's in my bag' ameoba records episode she talks about liking elliott's 'new moon' bc of how stripped down it is... i'd like to hear her make a record with just a four track, too.

I want to love "Kyoto," but the Broken Social Scene horns (and, I guess, the "mix" generally) just do NOT do it for me. The song turns to mush at the chorus, when it should stay tight and focused. Same with "Chinese Satellite" (my 2nd-fave track), and its strings / sound effects... the production feels busy and overdone, clouding the songs rather than allowing them to shine on their own.

that song is about Elliott Smith; as someone who saw probably every show Elliott Smith ever played in the Bay Are area and for whom his music was incredibly important for a few years there, I found that song really touching and effective. While my wife was in grad school with lots of people 10-12 years younger than her, several of them were pretty freaked out we'd seen him perform so many times; I wasn't even really aware he had such a strong legacy with people who weren't old enough to listen to him while he was still putting out music.

Apparently she has struck a Boomer nerve here: https://www.abc.net.au/doublej/music-reads/features/phoebe-bridgers-punisher-eric-clapton-covid/12546140
Bridgers confirms she is yet to hear from Eric Clapton, or his people, about the diss. Not that she would care.
"You know, I don't think our Venn diagrams are very connected," she says.
"I have such an Eric Clapton rant, because I think it's just extremely mediocre music, but also he's a famous racist."
― a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Friday, 14 August 2020 18:46 (three years ago) link
"The lyric used to be, 'we hate Eric Clapton'. It's actually kind of worse now. Because it's the dead baby song, which is a heartbreaking song.
"If I were to pick an Eric Clapton song, it's up there with the ones that I actually like. So, it's kind of a lie on the record, but it sounds more poetic."

one uncomfortable thing about her songwriting is how literally autobiographical it is. i always kind of resisted songwriting like that, and appreciated how bob dylan, even at his most confessional, would disguise his experiences in several layers of myth, just enough to give the people in life plausible deniability (somewhat not really).
however, the literalism of bridgers' lyrics seem essential to the enterprise. something about affirming the absolute reality of one's biography in an era when our identities are spread across tech platforms and like political affiliations. which is another way of saying the album feels very grounded, in a way that might have seemed naive if every song didn't hit so hard and true.

How does this new album compare to her earlier Stranger in the Alps? I couldn't click with that one, even as I recognized her obvious talent.

fwiw I almost gave up on Stranger in the Alps after four or five listens, but two songs from it came up on shuffle relatively close together and they both wowed me and that was the key to unlocking it.

for me, the song that sold me was "Motion Sickness."
when i learned it was about ryan adams, i was disappointed at first. it felt gossipy or something. but then i thought more about it and realized it was still a great song and an honest song. i don't think she was trying to trash him in it -- even though that would have been her prerogative, i don't think that would have made for a good song. but it's really about her experience, being disillusioned with some charismatic jerk she was infatuated with and still despite herself misses. (i've been there).
this, though, probably stung ryan adams, especially in a song that is so much better than anything he's ever written:

― treeship., Tuesday, 20 October 2020 20:47 (three years ago) link
Mine too, but at the risk of pedantry, I'd say it's "an album in which a guy and his wife divorce." Dylan isn't even much of a storyteller: he shares jokes, plagiarizes Americana, quotes Scripture, steals his ideas about women from Westerns.
― Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 20:48 (three years ago) link

people use "refracted" to describe clever, nonlinear narratives in art as if the common experience of refraction is to look at your hand through a swarovski crystal dolphin in sunlight. oooooo. but our most common experiences with applied refraction are through corrective or camera lenses, which aim to give just an accurate image of reality.

i really, really like the song. haven't heard it before.
I thought her vocals sounded kind of hesitant on both songs last night; is this due to terrible shitty monitors in the studio? She certainly doesn't usually pull back vocally the way it seemed she was and she doesn't strike me as someone who gets nervous doing TV at this point so I'm inclined to think this is some technical issue.

SNL is notoriously bad at mixing vocals for their musical guests. Also you could tell she was a little bit nervous during Kyoto.

At least if this is still what the word means: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/smash
Fwiw, I've seen endless posts and tweets criticizing or expressing amazement at the people who are offended by this and literally zero posts or tweets expressing offence - which itself raises a question imo: if the prevailing response (afaict) is "how could this ruffle anyone's feathers? It's completely normal and expected rock star behaviour; she even got permission from the manufacturer and used a fake monitor", what is even the purpose or significance of such a gesture? I think I'm ambivalent: on the one hand, polite fake guitar-hitting seems somewhat pointless. On the other hand, there's a case to be made that actually impassioned genuine guitar-smashing is wasteful and destructive so maybe this is better?
xps

So, um. I've seen the story pop up a few different prominent places now, and I don't know what to make of the fact that they all seem to similarly focus on the many salacious details but sort of glide right past the accusation that that producer dude who is suing for defamation is *literally a murderer*, which seems a much more serious and extreme accusation than fraud and theft etc..

― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 30 September 2021 17:29 (two years ago) link
Because Bridgers didn't accuse him of that? "Phoebe Bridgers sued for linking to the Instagram of Guy's Ex-Girlfriend who accuses him of murder, abuse" is kind of a strange lede.
― Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Thursday, 30 September 2021 17:39 (two years ago) link
Oh, I know. It's just how it's listed in his response to the accusations.
Nelson alleges Bannon “published false, defamatory, and misleading statements about (him) stating, among other things, that (Nelson) is a career criminal, murdered a man, commits racially-motivated hate crimes, abuses women, stole hundreds of thousands of dollars, trafficked in stolen or fake goods, committed cybercrimes, and defrauded numerous people.”
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 30 September 2021 17:48 (two years ago) link
Especially possibly racially-motivated murder.
NGL— this might be bad faith and spurious on his part, but I'm also not really buying "was a SoCal Klansman who committed sexual cybercrimes" accusations either.
― I'm a sovereign jazz citizen (the table is the table), Thursday, 30 September 2021 18:00 (two years ago) link
I've only seen the (weird) Pitchfork story, but I don't know why they would lead with the accusation of murder. As mentioned above, it seems to have been made in a now-deleted Instagram account, and the guy himself raised it in a defamation suit last December. I don't know why that and the other old suit even newsworthy (or even his suit against Bridgers, tbh).
