I wanted to start a thread about this Danish one-woman art-metal project... So here it is...

She's not even real metal, just some art student making empty fanfiction! Leave metal to the men! Hnnngh!

(I'm a qualified fan - think there's potential and a few great songs but...we'll see if this album manages to be captivating all the way through)

It's really pretty. A much stronger folk element than the last one.

Bought the deluxe digital version (five bonus tracks, including a second collaboration with Chelsea Wolfe). I feel like Mausoleum, the live record she put out last year, didn't get enough attention. It's really great; all acoustic, with a female choir backing her up.

I loved Mausoleum. I'm not a Trve Kvlt Metaller, though, and think that how metal something is and how "cool" it is are frequently in inverse proportion.

Didn't she milkshake duck herself already?

I think her debut had some good sounds and I really like her as a vocalist, but a lot of the actual writing felt under developed. Hope this new one's an improvement in that sense.

xp Fuck you're right

I also wanted to talk about a recent incident where Bruun stopped accepting private messages through the Myrkur Facebook page, as she was fed up with receiving death threats and misogynistic hate mail from men. Bruun revealed that she takes it in stride, and even uses it as artistic motivation. The conversation then took a surprising turn, as Bruun would go on to say that she’s far more concerned with the proliferation of Islam in Europe. I suggested that like other cultures, Islam has a secular side, and although she acknowledged that this is probably true, she said it’s a side that she’s never seen.

Can't listen to the interview in question right now but that sounds pretty bad.

yeah she goes pretty off the rails as this goes in

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 15 September 2017 14:04 (six years ago) link

oh shit that's bad, pls tell me chelsea wolfe hasn't echoed any of these sentiments

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 15 September 2017 14:09 (six years ago) link

huh. i was not aware of this. only heard the album this morning.

Shat Parp (dog latin), Friday, 15 September 2017 14:25 (six years ago) link

yeah i mean i dunno. i shouldn't claim to have read any other interviews or anything about her other than remembering i saw that somewhere so perhaps there's context i don't understand.

though i approach all Scandinavian metal-ish artists with a default skepticism (perhaps my own prejudice i guess)

I liked M okay, she has very very dodgy opinions tho'. https://zombitrol.com/index.php/interview/journal-of-musical-things/246-myrkur-the-zombitrol-interview

emil.y, Friday, 15 September 2017 16:12 (six years ago) link

i'm avoiding her bad opinions, the new album is really good.

alpine static, Friday, 15 September 2017 17:58 (six years ago) link

It is really good still a week on

I've decided I can get my folky bm jollies elsewhere tbh. It can't be any prettier than Botanist's new album in any case.

ultros ultros-ghali, Friday, 22 September 2017 20:04 (six years ago) link

Actually it is just as pretty as the Botanist
