After the grand success of the 1970s SOUL/FUNK/DISCO TRACKS POLL, we're jumping into the next decade with the 1980s R&B TRACKS POLL!

Here's the deal: you have about a week to nominate your favorite R&B tracks that were released from 1980 to 1989. You have an unlimited amount of nominations, but please use some common sense. I'll start the voting and campaigning thread somewhere around April 25.

Here are Rateyourmusic's Top R&B Singles for every year of the decade to get you started:
1980
1981
1982
1983
1984
1985
1986
1987
1988
1989

(Just to be clear: reissues of older singles are not eligible for this poll.)

I've always thought I was more about '70s R&B than '80s, but already the nominees are telling me it's actually the reverse.

More accurately, I'm MOST into R&B from about 1976-1984.

"Beat It" is not an R&B song imo

it went #1 on the r&b charts (tho yes, it scaled the pop charts first). charting at all on the r&b side is more than some other nominees, like exposé's "point of no return" (even tho freestyle is def part of the r&b realm sonically), can say.

in any case i feel like if the fit seems questionable to people voting, even if they really like the song, it won't tend to get enough votes to place. so there's probably no reason to revoke nominations except for release date.

dyl, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 16:21 (six years ago) link

not that charting history means that much anyways. mj's "human nature" also didn't chart r&b at all but today it would certainly be considered more r&b than "beat it" (and is also most likely to be played on r&b stations today).

dyl, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 16:25 (six years ago) link

anyways really excited for this, lemme throw some noms together :)

dyl, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 16:25 (six years ago) link

I'm barely keeping myself from nominating Holiday, which is probably my favorite disco ever but the world decided dance-pop isn't r'n'b at some point so whatever. Same with ABC.

Darin, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 18:57 (six years ago) link

so uh are we excluding rap titles from consideration here

like i want to nominate e.g. newcleus - jam on it

i know there's a tendency to separate r&b and rap based on their vocals but considering the two have basically coevolved thruout the latter's entire existence i feel it would be a ridiculous omission esp. since rap titles tended to percolate thru the same spaces (radio/venues/retailers etc.) commercially. the commercial format of r&b, which did include rap, is more easily pinned down than nebulous genre definitions of r&b anyhow.

dyl, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 19:28 (six years ago) link

(pretty much all of the rap songs i want to nominate were hits on the r&b charts btw)

dyl, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 19:30 (six years ago) link

This will become a significantly less interesting poll if we include rap (whereas it would become even more interesting if we include dance pop but that's just me).

"Jam On It" reads as much electro R&B as it does rap, tho.

this is what i mean by nebulous genre definitions (even tho i agree w/ the statement!). like where is the line drawn between electro r&b w/ largely rapped vocals (or no vocals) and actual rap? is it whodini's "friends"? j.j. fad's "supersonic"?

dyl, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 19:55 (six years ago) link

I'm the wrong one to ask, I think dance music is always at a disadvantage on ILM and if I can stack the deck in boogie's favor somehow, I'm likely to do it.

I listed "Mama Used to Say" upthread: a huge hit in England, #2 on te black chart, but like so many R&B hits of the era a dud on the pop chart.

Here's where I recommend The Blerb Radio Podcast, in which Thomas Inskeep and Michael Heyliger discuss every #1 and #2 of the eighties R&B chart.

I played Rhythm Nation 1814 about a thousand times in the fall of 1989, so for me it's definitely '89.

Can't quite wrap my mind around Moments In Love as r'n'b. At that point we should include the Pet Shop Boys and Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

gospodin simmel, Wednesday, 19 April 2017 14:00 (six years ago) link

My list is composed almost exclusively of charting singles. I'm sure I'll have another long list to contribute once I dig into album tracks.

Lipbra Geraldoman (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 19 April 2017 14:01 (six years ago) link

Not to mention freestyle tracks, which is a whole can of worms unto itself.

Lipbra Geraldoman (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 19 April 2017 14:02 (six years ago) link

i included "moments in love" b/c (in the us) it charted only on the r&b charts (not highly but still) and b/c the only station i hear playing it nowadays is the classic r&b station (often but not always during quiet storm segments)

dyl, Wednesday, 19 April 2017 16:24 (six years ago) link

included nocera's "summertime summertime" despite being freestyle b/c it also charted r&b (#47 peak, compared to a #84 pop peak) which again is more than some other freestyle tracks nominated (like "point of no return") can say

should be noted that some of the michael jackson singles that were nominated without objection missed the r&b charts entirely

dyl, Wednesday, 19 April 2017 16:30 (six years ago) link

anyway i figure considerations of goodness of fit will inevitably creep into voters' decisions

dyl, Wednesday, 19 April 2017 16:33 (six years ago) link

Yeah, that's why I'm reluctant to genre-police. It's R&B if it gets a vote.

I see people are nominating Kid Creole tracks, which wouldn't have occurred to me for some reason. But consideration of the Ze discography may have just made the nominating and voting an even more problematic endeavor for me.

Was about to nominate some Prince songs in honor of the day and just realized we already have 62 (not counting offshoots). This is going to be rough.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Saturday, 22 April 2017 00:17 (six years ago) link

I have already decided that the way I'm gonna do my ballot is to make a non-Prince ballot, see where I'm at, and then fill in as many Prince songs as there are slots remaining. It's really the only way to keep my ballot nothing but Prince.

(xp)

I can include those tracks in the list, but I don't think all of them are from the 80's.
Old Lunch, if you want to nominate tracks from that list, just copy/paste the lines as they are. For me it's easy to format the lines the way I want them.

Oh, and I made a mistake yesterday; I must have thought it was Saturday already. You have about 36 hours left now.

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 22 April 2017 16:45 (six years ago) link

I grant that there are important differences between r'n'b and dance-pop but Madonna was always comfortably in the former camp to me conventional wisdom be damned! Wasn't confident enough to actually nominate her though.

Madonna - Crazy for You

I love this song, but I don't hear any R&B in it. Other Madonna tracks, yes, but this one sounds more touchy to me than anything.

Thanks, ArchCarrier, I think I plucked what I needed from Josh's list.

Yeah, I wavered on some of those less overtly R&B tracks but I figure the voting will ultimately decide what really counts.

Tuomas, Saturday, 22 April 2017 20:11 (six years ago) link

Mmmmmm, I might have to take mild umbrage with the Patrice Rushen, ArchCarrier. The single was released in '79 (and its attendant album was released in late '79, so I'd suspect the same of the single, although I can't find its actual release date), and the info I have is that it didn't chart until 1980. It's iffy, I admit, and yours is the final ruling, but just wanted to put it out there because it's a fantastic song.

Joubert Singers - Stand On The Word (Larry Levan remix)

Even though this is commonly credited as such, the track was not remixed by Larry Levan, and he wasn't even the one who discovered it. We've discussed it in this thread, and Red Bull Music Academy recently did a thorough article on the whole tangled history of the track, and why it's erroneously been thought to be a Levan mix. But the best-known version is not a remix of any kind; Tony Humphries did later re-record it with Phyllis Joubert's choir and mix it, but that version is not as well-known these days as the original.

Tuomas, Sunday, 23 April 2017 11:16 (six years ago) link

I'm stripping remix credits and other version information from the tracks anyway. I'll try to note it if many people voted for a specific version.
