Yes it's shameful but I've started a list:

https://open.spotify.com/user/moteldemoka/playlist/78nDved7zIQ5QvrzwmuTNG

So far:

The XX - Say Something Loving
Brian Eno - Reflection excerpt (this actually counts as a 2017 album not a song but spotify has it as an excerpt so...)

Actually 2016 singles but full albums get released this month

Grouper - I'm Clean Now
Ondatropica - Lazalypso

dance cum rituals (Moka), Monday, 2 January 2017 18:41 (seven years ago) link

see you in a month or so

I'm gonna mention the new Krallice even though it was released on December 21

Dinsdale, Monday, 2 January 2017 19:25 (seven years ago) link

Moka, are you saying there's a new Grouper in 2017?

Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Monday, 2 January 2017 19:39 (seven years ago) link

Yes! And if these two are any indication it will be the best thing she has released since 2007.

Where is there word that a new Grouper album is confirmed for 2017?

Evan, Tuesday, 3 January 2017 20:30 (seven years ago) link

Insider intel.

Well, not really... I was sure I read about it somewhere but I've been searching and I can't find anything... maybe I suck and I'm wrong and I just got you excited over nothing.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Tuesday, 3 January 2017 20:47 (seven years ago) link

Great news! So the new LP is called I'm Clean Now, or are you referring to the single?

flappy bird, Tuesday, 3 January 2017 20:50 (seven years ago) link

I looked thoroughly online but see no reference to a LP. Hoping for one of course :)

Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Tuesday, 3 January 2017 20:58 (seven years ago) link

Great news! So the new LP is called I'm Clean Now, or are you referring to the single?

― flappy bird

She released a 7" with two new songs (I'm Clean Now / Headache) called Paradise Valley on Dec. 21st. New LP is a rumor that apparently I started because I can't find any info about it so... noone know if there's actually a new LP coming up or what its name is.

New Ariel Pink & Weyes Blood collab song "Tears on fire" is catchy as hell, chorus is jarring on first listen but the whole thing has grown on me. Probably my favorite thing he's been involved in years.

the black crowes thread bump got me to pull out their greatest hits tonight. i'm a few american domestics deep and thoroughly enjoying it.

i've also been playing the sheer mag ep from last year and some select lee hazlewood.

I had to come up with something...it's a nice track if you like smooth, lush 70s soul. Sounded perfect strolling in the countryside yesterday morning

I have just been listening to that Senyawa album from late last year, I think. It is totally out there world music drone type gear with some marvellous Tibetan throat style chanting vocals.

Man. The new Julie Byrne album just knocks me off my feet, every time. Whispery folky singer-songwriter so good I've not heard since the last great albums by Julie Doiron or Laura Veirs ~ and both have been a while. So stark, so gorgeous.

Have you heard Julie Byrne's live cover of Photobooth by Death Cab? She takes it to another level... there's something about her performances which really gets to me and I usually hate that emo lyrics + folk guitar combo.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 18:29 (seven years ago) link

She recently showed up on my release radar, enjoyed it but couldn't figure out if it was the kind of singer songwriter material the world has plenty of already

niels, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 19:49 (seven years ago) link

Hell no. She's really something else. Give her a shot.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 19:59 (seven years ago) link

Julie Byrne's "Prism Song" was one of my favourites from 2014, so cool to be reminded me of her now. Will need to check the album out :)

Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 07:58 (seven years ago) link

I like her but I wouldn't say she's something else, I'm just a sucker for that kind of stuff (Alela Diane, Marissa Nadler etc.). I prefer Rooms With Walls and Windows but this one is solid too.

Have you heard Julie Byrne's live cover of Photobooth by Death Cab?

I think you're thinking of Julien Baker.

Hah I was thinking Julien Baker. I love her.

I also like Julie Byrne but yeah I was actually talking about Baker.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 17:41 (seven years ago) link

I'm not much into emo lyrics but her singing is very genuine so I'll buy in... also she's such a good guitar player! I'm yet to hear a live performance of her where she doesn't have a great tone on her guitar.

"In a part of Dublin known as the Liberties, which is also where the Vikings settled 1000 years ago, there is a small community of rebel horse owners. And a few years ago, a travelling street musician who goes by the name, "The Musical Slave", accidentally crashed her van into the wall of one of their urban horse yards – and out came a horse and a few boys. One of them brought her for a spin with a horse and two-wheeler, and from that day on she was hooked. She ended up buying her own horse and moving him into the yard...

The Musical Slave is a street musician and storyteller from Bergen, on the west coast of Norway. She plays tropical punk, and sings about love, the forces of nature, and the world economy."

A couple days ago I thought I wasn't even going to be able to get through the album (LM is pretty outside my usual) but then I came back to it the next day with Wild Once, which really clicked; then came back around and listened to the whole thing.

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 13 March 2017 02:47 (seven years ago) link

Yeah it's outside my usual as well Rudipherous, tbh I like songs like "Soothing" and "Gurdijeff's Daughter" more than the other ones I've heard, which probably makes it clear I'm not familiar with her.

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Monday, 13 March 2017 02:50 (seven years ago) link

"Gurdjieff's Daughter" is my favorite song of hers. Maybe it is Laura Marling for people who aren't into Laura Marling. I've always wanted to like her though. She always seemed really solid, just making types of music I don't listen to much.

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 13 March 2017 03:05 (seven years ago) link

"Gurdijeff's daughter" is like a really solid Pretenders homage IMO

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Monday, 13 March 2017 03:08 (seven years ago) link

"Gurdjieff" definitely one of her catchier tunes. It's not my favorite on "Short Movie" any more though. That honor would go to the lovely "Easy". Of the three albums I have by her, they all have there fair share of keepers.

o. nate, Monday, 13 March 2017 03:30 (seven years ago) link

Mordy mentioned them upthread but the Sacred Paws album is great in an 'Electrelane play Vampire Weekend' kind of way. I really like the final track 'Getting Old'

Lots of going back and getting up to speed on new tracks from artists I've liked in previous years, plus a fair amount of rabbit holing on Spotify itself. I wish I still had time to scour blogs, but a) I don't and b) so many blogs are just dumping grounds for free PR mp3s or soundcloud links now.

Oh, and also soundcloud. Rabbit holing on there is usually productive.

Tarantula Wallpaper, Dracula Screensaver is the debut album from Danish band Starcrash and I am loving it - it's kinda classic rock/power pop with indie sensibilities, I'm thinking fans of Teenage Fanclub and perhaps Flaming Lips will be into it. Unfortunately I can't find much info about the band and I haven't read a single review of the record. But so far it's one of my 2017 faves.

Gukbe, Sunday, 13 August 2017 08:19 (six years ago) link

I kinda thought Hazel English was neat when there was a steady drip of singles every few weeks, but once I heard them all together on a single album I got bored by the sameyness.

Perversely unmentioned to date:

Colin Stetson - All This I Do for Glory (you know what to expect, close/contact mic sax aping minimalists, good but diminishing returns)
Susanne Sundfør - Music for People in Trouble (acoustic-to-orchestral angst favored by fans of her last, ABBA-esque album. Spoken word bits belong elsewhere)
Sevdaliza - Ison (close in conception to FKA Twigs, Arca-inspired downtempo with strong cabaret vocals by an Iranian expat)
Kaleida - Tear The Roots (Soft Cell backing Tracey Thorn is an idea I can get behind. The EPs were better)
Allie X - CollXtion II (craftmanlike synthpop, chugging away without much attention)
London Grammar - Truth Is a Beautiful Thing (Hannah Reid is probably more talented than your favorite current vocalist)
Nídia - Nídia é má, Nídia é fudida (ok, I mentioned this upthread, but Afro-house/electronica fans should be all over this)
Hammock - Mysterium (plugging away at the ambient side of shoegaze for over a decade, this is among their best)
Widowspeak - Expect the Best (more Mazzy twang indie. A personal weakness)
Ifriqiyya Électrique - Rûwâhîne (Gnawa inspired call/response with sympathetic production)
Anneli Drecker - Revelation for Personal Use (I'd love to see a S/D for post Bel Canto Drecker)
Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith - The Kid (cheating: out 6 October. Florid bucolic dreampop, as one might expect)

Big Thief - Haley

One of the best songs this year! Hear it right now!

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 2 November 2017 06:39 (six years ago) link

It sounds like something I would have been listening to in 1983, maybe from Touch and Go Records, but so far I am enjoying it a lot, even though I hardly listen to anything like this these days:

Melkbelly - Nothing Valley

I think this vocalist has a good punk voice.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 2 November 2017 15:52 (six years ago) link

She reminds me a bit of Mary Timony.

o. nate, Thursday, 2 November 2017 17:01 (six years ago) link

The drummer is quite good too, and the guitars hit the spot for me (though there are no surprises). Very hooked on this for the moment.

I'm not familiar with Mary Timony except as a name--and I also recognize her photo. I'll have to check out some of her projects while I seem to be in the mood for this-sort-of-thing.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 2 November 2017 17:20 (six years ago) link

Nothing she's ever done sounds much like this—maybe Melkbelly and Autoclave could overlap on a venn diagram on a good day—but she's neat. You may like her.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 2 November 2017 17:39 (six years ago) link

Listening to some Autoclave. Not too similar, but not bad. It would be an understatement to say I'm not a fan of most 90s rock, but as a result I also haven't heard a lot of it (where I might have listened to equivalently positioned bands in the 80s).

the youtube clip is working for me

Dinsdale, Thursday, 2 November 2017 20:09 (six years ago) link

That video still doesn't work for me. Maybe it's not available in North America (though it doesn't say anything that specific).

I've also seen comparisons between Miranda Winters' vocals and Girlpool's vocals. I don't hear it based on what little I've heard of Girlpool (which is pretty zzzzzzz to me). Winters has a raw, slightly husky sound that somehow seem very unaffected and not as smug as so man indie vocals. She's hitting a familiar (that word looks weird to my sudafedinated brain) sound but I can't think of other vocalists that sound that similar. They probably exist though! So much that could be related to this that I haven't heard.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 3 November 2017 01:59 (six years ago) link

Track's also on Spotify, but then maybe not in North America.

New additions to the playlist and a change (Knox Fortune song switched because I think I like this one better, but the whole album is good probably one of my favorites of the year) :

James Holden & the Animal Spirits - Each Moment Like the First
Grapetooth - Trouble
Knox Fortune - Lil Thing
The Shacks - Fly Fishing
E Ruscha V - Who Are You
The Proper Ornaments - Memories

James Holden, Grapetooth and Knox Fortune might be appealing to BOC fans. It sounds very much post-BOC and nothing like them but there's some elements: hip hop beats, vintage and eerie synths, summer feels, a certain childhood nostalgia to them. Holden in particularly is close to that sound but the other two sound like pop singles produced by BOC.

Justin Adams - Ribbons

It is partly a more abstract take on various world music, which sounds like a frightening description, but I think the music is good nevertheless. Some tracks have Anneli Drecker on them (not someone I am familiar with, although I guess I have been very vaguely aware of the existence of Bel Canto). "Crow Dream" is a standout track (ahem, ulysses).

first listen (cursory), this is some cut n'pasty, OPN-like bullshit. 2nd listen, this is nowhere near KOCH levels. Third listen, 'holy shit!' - it's **dope** "af".. ultra-lean and concise, need to hear it again.

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Sunday, 3 December 2017 01:09 (six years ago) link

It's a fantastic album, one of his best (up there with 'Diversions').

Jungle/dnb died 16, 17 years ago*. Metalheadz, Fabio, Grooverider, Optical & Rush, Doc Scott: I commend them for plowing on, but it's sad really. *Nothing* of note, nothing evolutionary, nothing forward thinking - let alone brash futuristic, a core element of the genre - has come out since 2000 or so.

The only to in some way do justice, and use the breaks and synths of jungle past, is what Gamble does so masterfully. He doesn't do 'nods', but echoes and mutates what was so great about it and incorporates it into a sound palette of now.

* Disclaimer: I was a teenage junglist.

moka, not sure why you'd place Today over voices if it's down to what's best, but YMMV

In a slipshod style (Ross), Thursday, 14 December 2017 06:21 (six years ago) link

I’m still unsure about many of these not my final list. Almost every artist in there has another song or two which I can gladly replace. I have my own stupid rule of only one song per artist though... I might end changing some of these in the following qeeks.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 December 2017 06:40 (six years ago) link

admire yer commitment Moka, tho

In a slipshod style (Ross), Thursday, 14 December 2017 06:45 (six years ago) link

one song per artist is not stupid tbh

In a slipshod style (Ross), Thursday, 14 December 2017 06:45 (six years ago) link

I wish the 77 had that rule tbh

Simon H., Thursday, 14 December 2017 13:09 (six years ago) link

Didn't know there was a new Errorsmith album, thanks for the tip DL

brimstead, Friday, 15 December 2017 17:40 (six years ago) link

I wish the 77 had that rule tbh

I do too, actually. At least as far as the rollout goes (highest voted song by the artist is their de facto single appearance), but people would riot.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 December 2017 17:49 (six years ago) link

Especially since I'm guessing the # of nominated tracks and albums goes up every year with the hyperavailability offered by streaming services

Simon H., Friday, 15 December 2017 17:51 (six years ago) link

I wrote in some other thread the same proposal. 77 songs, no repeating artists and maybe acknowledge the next two most voted songs from artists with more than one song in the real top 77. when the rollout is over post the 'real' top 77 with repeating artists. In 2014 we had like 5 Taylor Swift songs and in 2015 4 CRJ and 3 Grimes songs. This year I think will be a tad more surprising but we'll still get 3 or more Kendrick songs in there.

I see the problem about changing the rollout and I don't really see it happening but you can't deny it would be a bit more interesting. After all the real surprises are always in the lower numbers.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 15 December 2017 18:27 (six years ago) link

I propose that every year and get shouted down but imo we should take an actual vote or something

Simon H., Friday, 15 December 2017 18:28 (six years ago) link

I'm in but someone else should do the writeup about the proposal in a poll. I suck at explaining things convincingly, specially in english.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 15 December 2017 18:30 (six years ago) link

If we get two more posters in who like the idea I could draft it.

Simon H., Friday, 15 December 2017 18:33 (six years ago) link

As ever, strongly disagree

Cardi Acs (imago), Friday, 15 December 2017 18:35 (six years ago) link

Bring on all the Kendrick

Cardi Acs (imago), Friday, 15 December 2017 18:37 (six years ago) link

include it as a question on the voting form this year, with it taking effect the following year with a majority vote

ciderpress, Friday, 15 December 2017 19:53 (six years ago) link

Why wait a year? If it passes (which, tbh, I don't think it would), I can't imagine it would be all that difficult to adjust the rollout.

Simon H., Friday, 15 December 2017 19:59 (six years ago) link

that works too, I just think wrapping it into the actual process is the only way to ensure that everyone who cares sees it in time

ciderpress, Friday, 15 December 2017 20:01 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I think that's a good approach.

Simon H., Friday, 15 December 2017 20:03 (six years ago) link

I am not in favor of the change fwiw, especially since it opens up a lot of grey areas wrt collabs and guest appearances

ciderpress, Friday, 15 December 2017 20:05 (six years ago) link

OK, so no repeat appearances according to top billing. How many tracks have popular artists sharing equal billing?

Simon H., Friday, 15 December 2017 20:07 (six years ago) link

Guys, this change ain't gonna happen. It's one of the flaws of a consensus poll. If a person votes for a song, that vote should count.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 December 2017 23:14 (six years ago) link

the vote would count, on the "pure points" 77.

Simon H., Friday, 15 December 2017 23:15 (six years ago) link

Trust me, I'm in favor of a more diverse rollout, but it is what it is.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 December 2017 23:18 (six years ago) link

i also support this move, the nay-sayers have no argument

ogmor, Saturday, 16 December 2017 02:10 (six years ago) link

Trust me, I'm in favor of a more diverse rollout, but it is what it is.

lol wtf kind of argument is this? if it's a flawed system let's fix it! we don't have to lobby fucking congress.

Simon H., Saturday, 16 December 2017 02:57 (six years ago) link

ha, you're talking to the guy who runs the system!

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Saturday, 16 December 2017 03:29 (six years ago) link

lol I'm bad at paying attention to who does what, but still, "this is how we've always done it" doesn't cut it for me idk

Simon H., Saturday, 16 December 2017 03:38 (six years ago) link

I'd always assumed people would get mad if their third favorite Young Thug feature didn't show up in the 77, but if that's not the case, it's something everyone can decide on before the 2018 poll. Too late for this one.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 16 December 2017 03:55 (six years ago) link

Is it actually prohibitively difficult to add a two-option poll to the eventual tracks ballot (assuming there's sufficient interest beyond....*counts*...five posters)? Or is it just annoying? (That's not me being petty, it would be a completely fair reason, since I can extrapolate how much work running this poll would be from running a relatively piddly single-artist one.)

Simon H., Saturday, 16 December 2017 04:10 (six years ago) link

The thing is the second, third, fourth song do appear as if in the real top 77 but they’re hidden until the top song appears in the rollout.

Example:

3. KENDRICK LAMAR - DNA (1827 points, 34 N1 votes)
[13. HUMBLE (1762 points), 24. ELEMENT (1365 points) 45. FEAR (678 points)]

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 16 December 2017 05:51 (six years ago) link

The benefit of doing it in that way is that you get to discuss 77 different artists and songs and when an artist with several songs in the top 77 appears you get to discuss all those in the context of album. And now we’re not only discussing the top 77 songs were discussing at least 10 more.

I know there’s a rollout with everything else below in the end but once the rollout is over people stop paying attention...

Far shot and in the end it’s your call JF since you’re the real ceremony master in here, just a suggestion of what it could be.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 16 December 2017 05:56 (six years ago) link

Either way, you know I love your effort and the top 77 is always fun and one of my favorite EOY polls if only because of how varied the voters personal tastes are.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 16 December 2017 06:00 (six years ago) link

The main reason I'm pushing any changes to 2018 is because I'm 99% sure this is the last year I'm gonna be part of the team putting the poll together, and I wanna go out on an easy breezy high note. :)

Great lists. Very happy to see some more love for Do It by Rae Morris. I only discovered it when Popjustice made it their single of the year. I've been obsessively watching the video since then.

re: monotony's list

I came around really late on the Sophia Kennedy album, and then promptly forgot to vote for it in the eoy poll (despite nominating it myself). Hope it places despite me.

I never heard that Nilüfer Yanya song before today, but it's marvelous.
