he sounds like sauce walka mixed with lil yachty now, i like it better.

ANU (sisilafami), Friday, 6 January 2017 11:15 (seven years ago) link

he's had more good songs last year than any of the comparable rappers. his breakthrough "2 times" was more like a keef thing, most ppl just heard "drip from my walk" & knocked him as a sauce walka clone but he's way better than sauce twins & chooses better beats than anyone in rap right now

i also like abt his music that though he's v much a 'street rapper' via lineage/tradition his music isn't weighed down by trying to prove how street it is, it's just fun music that has a sense of humor about itself

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 6 January 2017 17:26 (seven years ago) link

That G Herbo song is great, reminds of Pac

I like Famous Dex's ok, but he probably has a definitive commercial ceiling after that video came out of him assaulting his girlfriend

Sort of makes it hard for me to listen to him, tbh, even though I listen to plenty of rappers who have likely done worse.

altony rightano (voodoo chili), Friday, 6 January 2017 19:31 (seven years ago) link

i never really identified w/ him as some kind of moral voice, or it was like never like his thought process or persona that resonated w/ me—he's an entertainer more than a narrator—so while i don't approve & it has me thinking twice about, like, how i would interview him given the opportunity, or how I would write a #thoughtpiece about it, it doesn't really affect the way i hear the music itself all that much.

but i agree it may have created a commercial ceiling—he was too late vs. say kodak whose crimes came out after the Drake cosign etc.

whats funny about that to me is its like the most boring iteration of a familiar style, i dont really get it at all

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 11 January 2017 00:54 (seven years ago) link

i suspect ppl are sharing the video for the luigi cap + hentai shirt more than the song

example (crüt), Wednesday, 11 January 2017 01:17 (seven years ago) link

xp I agree with that, maybe people are responding to the tongue-in-cheek video/hook. Sort of like the response to "CoCo" and the whole "BAKING SODA I GOT BAKING SODA" bit.

voodoo chili, Wednesday, 11 January 2017 18:00 (seven years ago) link

re: hip hop evolution, it's pretty transparently "we read jeff chang's can't stop won't stop and dan charnas's the big payback & made a doc series out of them"...but...like it's really cool to see all this footage of, for example, the fantastic romantic five vs. cold crush, or actually tracking down coke la rock to talk about the herc parties, it's a great watch either way and saw a lot of footage of stuff i'd read about but never seen

I don't know shit about Lil Ugly Mane (I know only marginally more than shit about the current rap world, but I digress) other than that he is from Richmond, VA and he gets compared to a lot of things that I don't have much time for under most circumstances. But when I saw that an album he released under the moniker Bedwetter, was the #1 album of the year at Rate Your Music chart (yeah, it's early, but still) so I checked it out.

http://liluglymane.bandcamp.com/album/volume-1-flick-your-tongue-against-your-teeth-and-describe-the-present

Apparently Volume 1: Flick Your Tongue Against Your Teeth and Describe the Present was accompanied by an impassioned Facebook post by Mane decrying this county's mental healthcare situation and how it failed him when he tried to seek help.

The album is pretty harrowing stuff, produced claustrophobically perfectly emulating a fucked-up hazy mental state, but with forcefully delivered words - like he's fighting against himself for clarity he desperately needs - with an eloquence and especially a vulnerability that, frankly, seems a complete contrast from the crap he gets compared to. It's like he realized nobody's hard enough to not need help sometimes, and that the inability to get it perpetuates a lot of bullshit. A very personal statement that points out, maybe unintentionally, how whole communities can be lost over our inability to deal with it.

Personal therapy that also critiques our current inability to deal with mental health issues as a society with a laid back noir style that makes me flex my head as well.

Ambrose Akinmusire and Kool A.D.: Origami Harvest (WORLD PREMIERE

Jazz trumpet virtuoso Ambrose Akinmusire joins his “unfurling lines that confound expectation” (Chicago Tribune) with rapper Kool A.D.’s “social consciousness infused irreverence” (Colorlines) to create a brand new chamber music work co-commissioned by Liquid Music and the Ecstatic Music Festival. Guided by Akinmusire’s “strong aesthetic compass” (The New York Times), this uniquely explorative and expressive world premiere collaboration will feature the “fearless, precise and forward-looking” (The Chicago Reader) Mivos Quartet alongside pianist Sam Harris and drummer Marcus Gilmore.

“For a jazz trumpet player, you couldn't be more on top of the world than Ambrose Akinmusire.” – NPR

“A thoughtful effort to deconstruct and rearrange cultural objects in ways that challenge our deepest assumptions.” – Mother Jones on the music of Kool A.D.

the roc marciano album is good, but yeah sometimes the beats just seem off ...

also this is increasingly true, especially with dudes that are operating on a lower budget, but there's so many rap records now that just sound like shit, roc's vocals are mixed too low on some tracks, and could really use some EQing on others, like there's this whole generation of producers that really are just beatmakers used to sending ppl beats through dropbox and then getting a vocal track back, they don't really know how to make records like a dude like DJ Quik or Organized Noise or Timbaland or whoever....really frustrating, i remember some Your Old Droog track last year that was like jesus fuck did anyone listen to how hard these vocals are clipping for no reason?

blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 27 February 2017 17:19 (seven years ago) link

yeah agree. i have my beef with the sound on a lot of the popular 808 heavy producers too. Probably why Mustard n them brought in Quik to finish YGs biggest hit, fill out the sound.

Pro studios aside, a producer who can make great creative beats is not necessarily the same person who is able to do a great mixing job on it + the vocals, but often ends up having to be that person.

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 28 February 2017 16:59 (seven years ago) link

what is it with contemporary tv music broadcasts - why is the sound so flat and unengaging? sounds straight off the mixing board or smth, no reverb, no sense of space... and these are good musicians! I'm thinking a Zoom recorder in the studio would've done a better job

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Friday, 17 March 2017 16:22 (seven years ago) link

Mastermind, Black Market and this new one really live up to the hype on Ross's production imo. Kinda reminds me of that 2014 Jeezy album that had a bunch of gorgeous soul beats, really like the suspended vocal sample on "Santorini Greece" in particular.

Dude has the worst "hyped up" voice in the game tho. He doesn't use it much but it's on one of the tracks here. Same one he used a bit on "Free Mason" off Teflon Don

this was produced by a kid named chad thomas, who is going into his senior year as a football player at univ of miami. he started at defensive end last season. he & ross have made some music before but that beat was way more accomplished and soulful than i would have expected.

deej, I noticed you were complaining on twitter about songs that are only available for streaming and asking about how djs cope with this development. The answer, I think, is that mp3 dj pools are going to become even more important to most djs as the sale of mp3s steadily declines. My main issue with the dj pools is that they're quite expensive - at least as long as you can't actually find everything you need on there anyway. I tend to spend about $ 20 a month on afro/london/dancehall stuff anyway and subscribing to get big sean mp3s on top of that for an additional $ 20-30 a month sucks. I can send you Living Single though. They have it on digiwaxx, which is free as long as you give it a quick review before you dl it.

dope plz send. Yeah I had a dj pool sub but it kept me up on shit i didnt care about & mostly missed all the stuff i want...like do any dj pools have the new carti/uzi "woke up" record? i bet they dont, but they do have (as does amazon) the song that they pushed as a single first.

it's running out of puff now finally but lowkey one of the biggest music stories of 17 is popcaan's version of the roy woods tune becoming surely the most successful one minute twelve second tagged unmastered demo leak mp3 ever. pure culture; ppl rinsed it, djs rinsed it (the soundcloud loops it once over, the join is rough, no one cares), perfect daydream ephemera infatuation spring jam form & function

still kinda baffled at how the sonics of late 70s/early 80s dentist office jazz have become so popular w rap producers, these washes of synths w no attack and burbling fender rhodes chord clusters that float around with occasional horn stabs or sax riffs swimming along. I don't dislike it but it did seem like an odd sonic backdrop for like the first half-dozen songs on the album w their angrier/despairing sociopolitical-commentary rhymes. Feel like things start to pick up and cohere around the midway point w Y Don't You Love Me (lol @ "If I Was Your Girlfriend quote, also lol @ Sun Ra dialogue sample in the opening track for that matter), and then Rockabye Baby and Ring the Alarm really pull things together.

aside from the obvious reasons of, ill want to listen to 'd to the a' again but will never intentionally put on 'bring it back,'

hes singing banalities over a 2008 hypemachine chart topper. its cynical & stupid

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 9 May 2017 08:50 (six years ago) link

i mean, i never fully bought into yachty so im not pretending this is some radical departure from his usual shit, cynical pop star at any costs was always his steez

but that also has the potential to tip over at any moment into pure marketing hype. the anti "real hip hop" crusade has been a remarkable shield for his lack of original musical ideas but its kinda corny to me

i do think he can rap though

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 9 May 2017 08:52 (six years ago) link

the other thing about 'bring it back' that's lame is, it feels like a compromise pop record right at the moment when uncompromised rap records like 'xo tour life' 'look at me' and 'magnolia' can do well on top 40...its weirdly dated, chasing that 'hold on we're going home' high.

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 10 June 2017 05:30 (six years ago) link

seems obviously better than yachty

carti & hnrdxx are good but not as good

uzi vert could pose a challenge, young thug also, but those arent out yet

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 10 June 2017 05:31 (six years ago) link

obviously SANDAS and Trippie Redd's tapes are also ace this year but kind of rookie records.

this new trippie redd is fire btw, what's that string sample? I know i've heard it but i can't place it. Pierre bourne can do no wrong and this is a hell of a chorus lol

holy shit Thot Breaker is amazing... wonder if he'll cross(back)-over, after a few years out of the spotlight making music 4 the fans

flopson, Saturday, 10 June 2017 19:37 (six years ago) link

Fwiw some of the best songs on it actually leaked out a year ago. Lol a lot of him "making music for the fans" had to do w presentation and ppl's (inaccurate imo) perceptions of him just off in left field making weirdo music or whatever

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 11 June 2017 02:21 (six years ago) link

Like yes a love songs theme makes this more obviously conceptual but a lot of what's going on here musically has obvious precedent in the "nobody" tapes for ex. This stands apart just cuz it is just a well-curated collection of songs put together by his current manager. (Bang 3 was put together by FilmOn, alki david's label; finally rich by larry Jackson and young chop, bang 2 and almightyso by keef himself.)

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 11 June 2017 02:26 (six years ago) link

AlmightySo, IMO, is just as good as this, maybe slightly stronger, arguably slightly less accessible. In the context of Uzi vert, playboi carti, and yachty, I think it seems much less weird now than it did in 2013

JID sounds so much like Kendrick I've had trouble living with it. I keep meaning to give it another chance but I can't help but feel like he's building a career of one of Kendrick's voices

oh I forgot in my rundown to mention Valee's VTM project I listen to more than any new artist this year

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 12 June 2017 01:29 (six years ago) link

i put all the Valee tapes in a playlist but ya thats one of my most played for sure, he is like the personification of this thread rap music's memorable banalities lol. 'Shell' is top 5 of the year (despite coming out late last year)

flopson, Monday, 12 June 2017 03:27 (six years ago) link

His voice is undeniably Kendrick-esque, and so is his flow sometimes, but his vision is so different that it's not a distraction after a couple listens. I hear more mischief in his sound, and more overt nods to west coast alt-rap, shit like Heiroglyphics and Funkdoobiest.

deej - i'm listening to keydo

this is pretty striking. i really like it a lot. where is he from?? he's got his own thing, love the beats, the whole thing is really murky and almost psychedelic weird to me like early goodie mobb or the witchdoctor album (not really in that he sounds like them but there's a real subterranean feel to it but still very funky)

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 July 2017 20:22 (six years ago) link

now he's sampling "feelin' it" by jay-z hook...this is cool i like i can't really get a handle on him in a good way, or he doesn't seem to slot into a easy category

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 July 2017 20:24 (six years ago) link

He's from D.C. i think his rapping is close to old gucci, but that might be because they're both influenced by 90's memphis rap such as playa fly and tommy wright. But there's def more to it.

ANU (sisilafami), Wednesday, 12 July 2017 20:56 (six years ago) link

he name drops playa fly, tommy wright, currensy (his song tribute to currensy sounds a lot more like back to the trap house era gucci to me) but I def also get a heavy dose of DC eccentricity thru stuff like yung gleesh & other Trel era slutty boyz dudes

def agree w/ all this btw ... i too got kind of a subterranean dungeon fam vibe to it, its also super steeped in music history but in a way that seems like an extension of his personality rather than any kind of overpowering Influence, its more the raw material he builds his music w/

i thought new gunplay & a-xax albums sucked.

ANU (sisilafami), Sunday, 23 July 2017 20:51 (six years ago) link

huh. any particular reason why?

Gunplay was alright by me but def disappointed in the awax. His voice is a major part of the draw for me and there's just way too much autotune on it. Handful of good tracks on there tho. Whole Onion is cool.

down that brown path (Spottie), Monday, 24 July 2017 17:04 (six years ago) link

the new a-wax sounds like a random atlanta album devoid of any personality.
there's like one great song on the gunplay album, the rest is average as fuck, his writing/rapping on it is not on par with his on the tape with mozzy.

ANU (sisilafami), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 12:13 (six years ago) link

yeah don't agree on either point; very much like d-boy fresh, cocaine, patience, y'all know where i'm from, hoeing on the low

i like the front half of the a-wax quite a bit; the autotune feels more like an instrument on the choruses than supplanting his voice

if you like sob x rbe, there's a pretty cool album by affiliate named lil sheik.

So here's an interesting observation: a LOT of people seem to think that Post Malone doesn't rap. That what he's doing is, in fact, something else, more similar to... Jamiroquai. Or that he's simply just a singer. And while I'm no big fan of what he's doing in a lot of other ways... that *is* rapping on rockstar, right? Is it because he's white?

really? i didn't think it was as good as the first one, but it wasn't that big a drop-off

i felt like the songwriting was a lot more hurried

but it also might have been unfairly contrasting w/ my new fav rapper 03 greedo whose melodic choices tend to make these younger kids seem like they're finger painting

The new Lil Wop mixtape is wild

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3gsv3PMNPU

Evan R, Friday, 1 December 2017 15:03 (six years ago) link

i find him unlistenable. im convinced hed be nowhere near as famous if his name wasnt 'lil wop' in the era of GUCCI MANE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ARTIST WHO HAS EVER LIVED

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 1 December 2017 18:35 (six years ago) link

Nah, his Gucci fandom is the least interesting thing about him. He gives lip service to Gucci, but his sound owes more to Keef. Both of those things are kinda boring on their own, but I love the tape's mashup of slasher films and sugary breakfast cereal.

Also helps that he uses his own stable of producers, rather than just tapping the same old 1017 standbys. Gucci's never made a tape that sounds anything like this

Evan R, Friday, 1 December 2017 18:42 (six years ago) link

i dunno, most of his records so far i find aggressively unlikeable

lets talk about how this is the best chief keef record of the year

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cD3LvBIOsKI

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:53 (six years ago) link

I haven't kept up with them all but that whole tape sounds like his best start-to-finish project in years to me. The mix is interesting... all these songs, like "Less Speed," that might have been played for maximum volume a few years ago, sound slightly cushioned, like it was mastered with headphones in mind

Evan R, Friday, 1 December 2017 21:08 (six years ago) link

it doesn't feel like his 'best project in years' to me in the sense that his catalog has always sort of exceeded the bounds of his projects, and capturing just one project feels like you're only look at one facet of what he does--like, to say this best represents him when there's zero melodic records on it feels wrong. I will say that this, like Thot Breaker, feels like one of his best-packaged efforts, and is definitely more well sequenced than the unfortunate Bang 3 releases, which were kind of botched even though the have some classic records on them (ie "laurel canyon")

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 1 December 2017 22:41 (six years ago) link

I knew from the singles that this keef would not be for me. I enjoyed Thot Breaker a lot, and I was into Nobody 2 and quite a few Bang 3 tracks were great too despite being patchy on the whole. I'd love to see him put something together that was full of tracks like No and Tats. Still, for me, he's been the most consistently interesting and innovative rapper around for the last 3 years.
