they were a fucking septic cyst at the base of the regularly-flaccid cock of heavy metal back in the 90s. i only hope the viral nastiness contained within their best grooves will ultimate choke the living shit uot of the big-shorted cunts who stole their sound and left their intellect, their creativity, their grandiose sense of the ridiculous and their utterly hateful sense of morality cowering in a corner.

That 'Big' Jim Martin was an ignorant redneck puts me off the band a little though he sure as hell hit the buttons when they get it right (that he compliments Roddy on the synths so well surprises me since apparently he couldn't hack Bottum's sexuality) but anything post Angel Dusk is unlistenable shite... Hmmm, thinkng about it, I think I am a victim of a nostalgia trip when it comes to these boys...
Anyway, 'Faster Disco' is the absolute joint, can't get enough of it man - that breakdown and the way they build it back in again with those la la vocals hits me where it hurts, but in a good way.
And with Patton, I'm up for From Out Of Nowhere and Land of Sunshine (what is it about their lead tracks?), although Everything's Ruined is the one off Dust.

Listening now to the We Care A Lot album for the first time, something I never did at the height of their fame or anytime since. It sounds very "1985," but in ways that don't make it seem 29 years old? I dunno. FNM is/was a weird band that despite sometimes clunky songwriting, often dated production and general corniness manages to escape the era in which they existed pretty cleanly.
I still prefer Patton as the singer over Chuck Mosley, but this shit's great.

I started listening to an awful rip of it so I'll have to try again later. It didn't immediately grab me but that's not indicative of much. I didn't think a whole lot of Album Of The Year back in the day but it's really grown on me over the last several years.

TBF Angel Dust came out (what felt like a) lifetime (i.e. 2 years) before I got into rock/metal music, so KFAD was the one my friends and I all got into. Didn't hear Angel Dust for at least decade after.
― but then again, who really cares? I don’t. (dog latin), Monday, 20 April 2015 15:04 (eight years ago) link
Album of the Year was much better than King For A Day but noone was interested by then (kfad seemed to put a lot of ppl off them which i found strange but ppl are fickle)
― Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 20 April 2015 15:08 (eight years ago) link
I don't remember much about the last quarter of KFAD but the first section and a half is top-notch.
― but then again, who really cares? I don’t. (dog latin), Monday, 20 April 2015 15:12 (eight years ago) link
KFAD is so all over the place tonally and stylistically (for a band that's already kinda all over the place) that I can understand why people might've been disappointed that it wasn't Angel Dust Part 2. Album of the Year is much more low-key and cohesive and it feels more like a continuation of what they did on Angel Dust than the actual follow-up did.
― I Stepped On Your Samwich (Old Lunch), Monday, 20 April 2015 15:20 (eight years ago) link
I really liked King for a Day. "Digging the Dave" is a great concise single with some great screaming from Patton. I also love "Evidence." Trey Spruance played guitar on the album, but I understand he had little to no creative input. The album would've probably been pretty crazy if that had happened.
― afriendlypioneer, Monday, 20 April 2015 15:28 (eight years ago) link
― I Stepped On Your Samwich (Old Lunch)
This is pretty much OTM. KFAD has some great catchy tunes, but often doesn't seem to be striving for much more than pastiche and as a result has something of a hollow glib air to it. Angel Dust, the much underrated Album of the Year and the new one are much more concerned with tonal and textural originality.
― the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Monday, 20 April 2015 15:33 (eight years ago) link
I kind of wanted to start a thread about all those 'great, eclectic nineties' albums that go out of their ways to mix and juxtapose genres as much as possible. KFAD is def one of those.

I realize that Angeldust gets the bulk of the critical acclaim for the band and that people also mention the following two releases as well but fuck man, I still adore The Real Thing and still find myself playing it a lot more than any other FNM release. Yeah, it was their biggest album (in America ay ant rate), the one that broke the band, but I don't consider that a deterrent.
I admit a personal bias towards this one. I worked at Tower Records in the village in NYC from late 1989 for a couple years, my first "music biz" job after I left home to go (back) to NYC. I worked in the tape department in the basement. I adored this album from when I first picked it up after seeing the "From Out of Nowhere" video on MTV's "Headbanger's Ball" while still in Virginia before moving. I played it literally every day I worked and I know I was personally responsible for selling 100+ copies of the damn thing just through repetition and talking it up to customers and this was leading up to it really took off much later in 1990.
But even if I take a step back and try to look at it objectively, I enjoy the accessibility of the album. To me the none-too-subtle removal of the hooks from Angeldust was kind of a reverse sell out, a rebellious reaction to their unexpected but glorious success. Which they were entitled to do and which created another great album for markedly different reasons, but one that I simply don't play as much.
― Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Thursday, 23 April 2015 09:31 (eight years ago) link
There are loads of hooks on Angel Dust! So many! I genuinely think it's a much better more and interesting record than The Real Thing, which I find a bit grating (largely because of the nasal vocal thing Patton does on it, the songwriting is solid).

I love Angel Dust - especially now that I'm older, musically I find the arrangements really layered & cool
Like RV is so weird vocally but musically it's kinda beautiful, and Everything's Ruined - I love the soaring guitar in the background through the chorus & but the also the haunting piano in the verses
there's lots of really creative stuff going on!!
not that there isnt on all their albums but this one stands out artistically, like they really flex their collective muscles here imo

Yeah it's the album you get the sense from the most that they're combining ideas and techniques from different genres to create new hybrids rather than just doing a lounge song for a laugh or whatever.

it's funny how Angel Dust comes across to me now. I bought this album my freshman year of college, quite literally the week I began taking Luvox (anti-depressant/OCD medication) for the first time, so my head was doing some weird things already. i pulled a depressive vibe off of the music, it kind of played into what I was feeling and sent me to these weird places.
Obviously there's humor all over the damn album but I drew more on the less vibrant, more melancholy sounds when compared to The Real Thing. LIstening to it now, in a healthier state of mind, the album is much more of a good time, a jaunty trip by a bunch of talented musicians who liked to fuck with their audience, but without much of the genre-splicing that would come later.
AoTY I just rebought because I realize my opinion on the album is circa 1998 when I had maybe 30 albums total. First listen = I like this better than I remember, but if I recall the second half is where it lost me so having to chug along still.
Just picked up Introduce Yourself.

listening to AotY now and I like it much more than I did last I heard (which to be fair, was when I was 18 and hadn't heard Angel Dust or The Real Thing yet).
"Stripsearch" is so fucking great but John Hudson's plodding dumb caveman metal guitars are so pointless. I mean I realize Jim Martin was equally lumbering one-dimensional metal guy (which is why they fax-fired him) but he was more interesting. I think Hudson's riffs are mostly pointless on this album other than the lead he plays on "Ashes to Ashes". well and actually I do like his unhinged noisy riffing on "Naked in Front of the Computer".
Roddy Bottum's keyboards pwn this fucking album.

Jim Martin has that kinda Slash thing "wail with feeling" i dunno what you call it, lotsa players aim for it and/or imitate it but dont always get there
but I also like a lot of the post Martin stuff a lot, and if they lose a little guitarwise with hudson but enjoy playing together then cool

it's funny to consider that when FNM came back with Patton in 1990, I was aware of a perception like "whut? they got rid of a gin-yew-whine weirdo in Mosely for this kid who appears to idolize Anthony Kiedis" of which there was no shortage at the time. Yet which of the two has the more interesting, fulfilling career?

did Patton ever give a reason that he solely sang in that nasal voice on The Real Thing? I mean I know he also did it on the first Bungle but just seems like a weird choice, to sing like Paul Reubens's character in Buffy the Vampire Slayer all the time.

i got the album and gave it two listens. still haven't formed a solid opinion but I'd lean more to the 7.0 score myself. I do kinda feel like this is the type of album FNM could make in their sleep, but that shouldn't inherently be a detriment.
My concern is that the album seems like it may be a collection of good, if not great songs. I do think Hudson is much improved here. He's kind of like Emmitt Smith in that he takes what the band gives him rather than guiding anything, but stylistically he has more flare here and isn't so much a plodding dinosaur chugging out generic riffs.
I don't care so much about the lack of genre mashups like other people (I'd go more to Patton's 'other' band for that), but this probably will wind up somewhere in the middle of the pantheon for me.
but w/e either way, I'm glad to have them back.

got both REal Thing and Angel Dust reissues.
main diff I hear with Angel Dust reissue is that there's more separation between the layers...Jim Martin's riffs are more clear in parts where they were typically obscured a little by the keyboards. and they definitely have a bit more bite. some more separation on the keyboards so that in a few areas I can hear things I didn't previously. but really I'm more stoked for the 2nd disc.

I'm a bit disappointed by the live tracks - search out their 1992 show at Sheffield Arena or Phoenix Festival in 1993 (their final show w/Jim), which should be quite easy to find online: both have better sound quality and Patton is lunatic throughout.
I'm a bit disappointed by the bonus tracks as a whole, really, most of which are previously-released B-side stuff - what ever happened to demos, out-takes, etc? Like, I would love to hear what the Real Thing songs sounded like when the band played them to Patton at his audition - I feel Warners just couldn't quite be bothered to do that level of research and just wanted to cash in on FNM as their reunion hit its peak.
That Patton-vocaled As The Worm Turns is a cracker, though.

Watching old videos and thinking about that ums post:
In "Epic" and ESPECIALLY "We Care A Lot," you can see obviously that Billy/Roddy/Mike/Chuck are all total hams — Puff less so, but definitely "game." And throughout there's Jim, who just seems stoic and stubborn and like he never wants to play along, but that becomes its own kind of "straight man" routine that's funnier than the 3 or 4 wacky guys surrounding him. Just an insane dynamic, total inversion of the Limp Bizkit/Killswitch Engage/Rammstein trope of the One Wacky Guy by having a band of four Ernies and a Bert

Still love when I saw them in 15, they performed in all white dress outfits, and there were massive amounts of flowers on the stage.
And stagehands periodically kept bringing more, and more, a ridiculous amount of flowers at the front of the stage.
It was like an I Love Lucy bit. Great humorous way to set up the show

This is my favourite band I only really know one album well by. And that album is King For A Day, which I've loved since I was a teenager. I mean, yeah, I have heard other stuff of course - I have a memory of borrowing The Real Thing from the library back in the day, and I'm sure I've heard Angel Dust a bunch of times at people's houses. But I know very little of the pre-Patton material. I can't believe I'm only digging into it now. Not sure I agree with people who prefer the Chuck Mosley era - I wouldn't call him an amazing singer. But 'R'n'R' off Introduce Yourself is FANTASTIC.
Gonna work my way through their catalogue this week.

I love the Chuck Mosley era. I think he was a unique frontman and poetic voice. The Introduce Yourself and Real Thing eras of FNM overlap stylistically, since it was mostly written while Chuck was still in the band. See here this early version of The Morning After with different vocals and lyrics by Chuck. Those two albums are my favorite, with a nod to King For A Day, Fool For a Lifetime.

Weirdly, Faith No More is one of a handful of acts my wife and I seem to enjoy equally, but tbh I don't think I've ever heard much of the early stuff (aside from "We Care A Lot"). And another confession is that I've never been able to get into "King for a Day." Dunno why, maybe fewer hooks? Maybe I'll give it another shot today.

Listening to "King" now and it's objectively good, or at least not bad, but it's missing something, imo. Sounds kind of conventional, relatively speaking. But then, anything would sound conventional after "Angel Dust."
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 19 September 2023 16:48 (six months ago) link
Trey's guitar is pretty grey compared to Big Sick Jim Martin's work. When I interviewed them a few years back, Roddy was pretty explicit that his heroin addiction, exacerbated by his friend Kurt Cobain's death, meant he was pretty much checked out for this one.

Trey is technically a much better guitarist, but that sort of misses the point. Though I just hit "Caca," and that one hits the spot.

Agreed. You don't want intriguing textural experiments and modernist metal minimalism, you want ludicrous dayglo extravagance to match the other soundclashing elements.

doesn't really have to be an either/or approach. Jim's problem is he was unwilling to expand outside of a very limited scope, whereas the rest of his band actually weren't boring heshers. his contributions were actually great on all of the albums, but he was never going to go along with anything else they did outside of 'thrash metal with keyboards and funk bass' after Angel Dust, and he's still kind of a dick about it in interviews.
KFAD wouldn't have worked with Martin, it works because of how oddball it is and yet it's still tuneful as hell.
the only FNM I don't really vibe much anymore is the reunion album. it got all this praise and all it sounded like was middling mid-album tracks. not 'bad' but I almost never want to listen to it.

xpost Hmm, I dunno. I don't think "King" sounds particularly oddball, just ... slicker? And that's largely the guitar to me, less thrash on top of weirdness, more jazzy licks and other (relatively tasteful) stylistic excursions that Martin had no interest in but also likely couldn't pull off. Iirc Martin felt sidelined (or sidelined himself?) during "Angel Dust," and that may be because for all the crunchy riffs, the guitar is one of the least essential ingredients of the whole stew, imo. Don't get me wrong, I love Martin, and the guitar is important, but I mostly love how he seems more of a supporting player, big power chords rather than noodles and wheedle wheedle. It's always been about the rhythm section for me.
Has there been a recent interview with him?

King for a Day is okay, and I really loved it when I was younger, but Angel Dust is the original document--a once-in-a-lifetime album. Even though they got Spruance from Bungle on guitar it's way less weird than Angel Dust.
― afriendlypioneer, Tuesday, 19 September 2023 18:09 (six months ago) link
It feels more 'nu-metal' than Angel Dust. Angel Dust feels like a weird specimen by a divinely inspired band. That's a pretty meaningless description, yeah, but it's just got that ineffable artistry about it and I don't think their other albums have it.
― afriendlypioneer, Tuesday, 19 September 2023 18:10 (six months ago) link
I think they were always an unstable compound, and on Angel Dust the elements rubbed against each other in a singularly brilliant way. The Real Thing leans perhaps too heavy on the pop and metal sides of the equation, King is ugly and perverse, but not in a fun way, Album Of The Year is just kind of thick and claggy. The two Chuck LPs are their own thing, too - more innocent, more twisted, more of that pre-grunge thing before the alternarock sound coagulated and got too macho.

Wallace quoted via Wiki:
All the music was written before Mike joined the band, which had gotten rid of the original singer, Chuck Mosley, and the tracks were either in preproduction or being recorded when Mike came in. And when he'd ask if he could make a section longer or different, the band would say "No, this is it, so you have to do it this way". So Mike Patton wrote every lyric and melody to that record over a ten to twelve day period. And it is stunning, because he was nineteen or twenty, and pulled all that out of the air, and put together an incredible record. The only thing we did was spend a couple of days at this coffee shop in San Francisco, because a lot of the songs were really dark and heavy lyrically, crazily so, and I would sit there and go, "Mike, these are some great lyrics, but we need to at least use some metaphor, or couch some of the concepts, but I think you've got some great ideas here". In the end, they really pulled some great songs together.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 19 September 2023 18:34 (six months ago) link
I get why a lot of people aren't as big on KFAD, but I've always loved it. It's a close third place to Angel Dust and The Real Thing for me. Ricochet, King for a Day, and The Last to Know are all-time favorite FNM tracks. Patton does some career best singing on the album, too. Sometimes I wonder how much the album cover hurt this one. I'm weirdly affected by color palettes and the cover has always seemed so utterly dreary to me. I wouldn't be mad if they released a remaster with a totally different cover.

Amazing, amazing show, best night of my life, until someone poked my contact lens out in the moshpit and I had to wend my way to the back of the venue with the lens in a pint glass and hoping my friends found me on their way out and helped blind me get back home. Also another friend caught Puffy's drumstick at the end of the show and then got thumped by someone else in the pit who walked off with it. GREAT TIMES.

I liked KFAD more than I liked Angel Dust when I was 14-15. I now think it's way inferior. There's too much filler on there and the heavy songs sound too produced & typical. The magic isn't there like it was on Angel Dust.
― afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 21 September 2023 16:43 (six months ago) link
Album of the Year weights way too much to the typical & produced side, but "Last Cup of Sorrow" and "Stripsearch" are great mid-tempo FNM songs. Mike can sing, he can scream, and he can be really annoying.
KFAD is still my favorite. I don't know how good big jim ripping thrash guitar would have sounded that deep into the '90s. They needed something more taut and streamlined and still got pretty experimental with it — an attitude that carried over nicely to AOTY and Sol Invictus. That's also really the album where Mike becomes the Mike we know today, turning his voice into a diverse instrument of croons and screams outside of the naturally schizophrenic Bungle setting.

'Smaller and Smaller''Malpractice''Caffeine'

Only problems with AOTY - the songs are there, but Hudson is faceless as a guitarist, decent riffs but doesn't really do much more than a weak imitation of Jim Martin in broad strokes, and the bass playing is very subdued and pedestrian.
But I love "Stripsearch", "Ashes to Ashes", "Pristina", and "Collision" a lot.
I prefer it to the reunion album even though Hudson sounds more comfortable on the latter.

Yeah I think this is why Angel Dust never quite clicked for me any time I tried listening to it after loving KFAD as a teenager.
Patton is such a weapon on KFAD and his vocals are VERY prominent, like the main feature of that record. I put AD on and I'm kind of waiting for the thing to properly kick in cos his voice is so buried under the guitars and other instruments.
This is going to sound bananas to anyone holding this up as the last bastion for FNM, but to my ears it's a transitional album where they're still working out where to go; still leaning into 80s classic rock and Cali-funk; yet to fully embrace the smoky lycanthropic atmospheres I love about the follow-up.
In summary: Small Victory vs Digging the Grave - seriously, is there a competition here in terms of which has the most teeth?
But it's what you're used to I guess, and this might be the classic thing of "the one you hear first".
I would love to hear an alternate mix of AD with Mike's vocals given a bit more prominence over Jim's starting-to-become-dated guitars
― ...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Friday, 22 September 2023 08:52 (six months ago) link
I mean, Digging The Grave is astonishingly linear and predictable, like a Helmet song with an opera singer over the top. It has a gutteral punch, but... Small Victory is circus organs and rave samples and sirens and stuka bomber riff runs and pop rap and wild croon and a million other different perverse levels and collisions. It has more ideas in four minutes than most albums.
― Lumpy pillows, kiss my ass. Put that in your book (stevie), Friday, 22 September 2023 08:56 (six months ago) link
I've been leaning in harder here than KFAD deserves, partly because I found it SO disappointing BITD. There's a lot to commend it - Ugly In the Morning and Cuckoo For Caca are thrillingly visceral, Just A Man walks that insidious tightrope where you're not sure if they mean it, maaaaan, or are lampooning that kind of overdriven balladry. But Angel Dust always seemed a mad masterpiece to me, the sound of a band who could conceivably do anything, and are hurtling in a million sick directions at once. That's the thrill for me, that one song could be a Tom Waitsian character portrait, the next could smoosh rave music into thrash metal, the next could be a macabre subterranean epic about wanking, and it could close on an aching John Barry cover. And there's still nothing on KFAD as genuinely unsettling, upsetting, terrifying as Jizzlobber.
― Lumpy pillows, kiss my ass. Put that in your book (stevie), Friday, 22 September 2023 09:00 (six months ago) link
After AD the unstable element is jettisoned, the friction, the discomfort. The danger.
I think they probably lost that element of danger when Jim Martin left- even though by all accounts he had checked out even during the recording of Angel Dust they probably needed the grit in the oyster that was his presence. But who knows? Often bands have it, then it goes, and Martin leaving may have been correlation not causation.
Fascinating to hear different perspectives on this though, I'll have to go back to KFAD and give it another go, I was disappointed at the time it was released too. FWIW I like Sol Invictus a lot, a solid record with the odd moment that transcends that description.

Points dismissed to KFAD in that the second side has a long string of parodic ballads and throwaway mid-tempo jams that don't do much for me. The opening 8 or 9 songs are gold tho
― ...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Friday, 22 September 2023 09:23 (six months ago) link
Maybe it's just the production on AD not lighting things up for me then. Small Victory is a fairly straightforward mid-tempo rock song to my ears. But now you mention it Stevie, yeah I hear the elements you mention but everything's just totally blown-out and the rave samples are so deeply buried in the mix they're hardly audible.
I like the visceral howl of Digging The Grave. Yeah, no rapping or rave samples, but I mean, the first Korn album had been released by then so

Haha, at first I read this and thought you were talking about KFAD. Same could apply really. Maybe not the smoosh rave though, no. It doesn't have the wild'n'funky thing they'd done on previous albums - it was a much smokier, almost jazzy affair

i don't really hear any samples in that chorus but whatever, I love that song and Martin's guitar playing is a major reason why. I feel like he's not getting the credit he's due here. Yeah he's a metal guitarist, but he's not a wanky player, he has a really great command of tone of melody, everything he plays adds another dimension to the songs which is just gone after he left.

The stuff that bores me on KFAD are the tracks like “Star AD,” “Take this Bottle,” and others I can’t think of currently. They’re fine songs, but they’re not what I’m looking for when I listen to FNM. I guess the unpredictability is part of the appeal, but I prefer the madcap nature or “Be Aggressive” to weird genre exercises.
― afriendlypioneer, Friday, 22 September 2023 16:35 (six months ago) link
Maybe the difference between my feelings about KFAD and some on this thread are that I never felt disappointed by KFAD when it came out. It didn't sound like a band running out of ideas to me - if anything it sounded like it had more elements of Disco Volante-era Bungle than Real Thing era FNM. As Martin's guitar work on AD is being underrated by some; so is Spruance's on KFAD. My one criticism of KFAD is that it's a song or two too long. I have this complaint about many CD-era albums that came out around that time. I would have been fine with them dropping "Take This Bottle" which I almost always skip.

It makes me wonder really where FNM sit between themselves and Mr Bungle. Most of us, it's safe to say, come to Bungle for the madcap genre-fucking spectacle of it all, which is part of the appeal of Angel Dust it seems. So where does that leave Patton's FNM other than a more trad version of Bungle?

― beard papa, Friday, 22 September 2023 17:53 (six months ago) link
I think there's the manic Naked City/Zorny every-song/sound-is-different side of Patton, but he's also into prolonged genre exercises (as is Zorn, sometimes, too). Exotica, Morricone soundtracks, lounge music, etc. It's been a while since I listened to many of his albums, but iirc the prolonged exercises often lacked the zip I wanted from him. "King for a Day," imo, sounds more akin to that stuff, less unhinged, more steady/disciplined, maybe.

I think Bungle was a bunch of friends from nowhere California growing up on the same influences and molding them into a sound, and FNM was 4 or 5 guys throwing their own unique backgrounds and obsessions into a bowl and seeing what comes out

Yeah, Bungle always seemed more like a team/gang. FNM, I don't know much about the individual dudes, how divergent were their tastes and backgrounds?

Like iirc when I talked to Billy, he told me that he basically sent the "Another Body Murdered" recording to Mike to do his thing on it and got back all those screams and was like "You sure this is what you want to do?" and obviously that's the version we hear today

I mean, Billy and Roddy were teenage punx who grew into post-punk, Puff liked Ozzy but all three of them were intrigued by rap and electro emerging in the early '80s, Jim was obviously a metal dude who was buddies with Metallica, Mike came from Bungleland which was basically bizarro thrash metal then Boingo ska then Zorn kitchen sink nuttiness and then he spent the Angel Dust press cycle basically trying to get people to listen to Hanatarash and Kids of Widney High

The disparateness is what makes them such a unique and special band

i think of patton as having a bigger creative force in bungle than he does in FNM.

Another Body Murdered is so savage.

Patton's ooohh-ah-oohhh bassline is the perfect stage-setter for the boo-yaa voices, he absolutely shouldn't have come up with a verse
