I was gonna say, it feels like we've reached peak Drake.

Sorry for using that phrase, but it seems like the Drake market is saturated and people are gonna start getting sick of (or at least bored with) him.

i would always argue that his best tracks are his less known (non-album, deep cuts), but the ten tracks of the second half + hotline bling would have been enough to be a good album. it's a shame because the better tracks here have the potential to convince the non believers.

Drake peaked with "Hotline Bling," a brilliant song. This album bores me. But I was never a big fan to begin with. My brother on the other hand has been telling me about Views from the 6 for two years, hyping it as his magnum opus. Even he's unimpressed. Says that Drake is only interesting when he's the underdog.

this makes me part of the problem, I know, but no artist makes me feel old, decrepit and out of touch so much as drake. and he's older than me even.

Sampling this, I thought Kanye's rapping on "30 Hours" was straight and dude helped with that, so for all I think dude's flow lacks spark/spontaneity sometimes I think it's just the voice

at no point in the last 7 years have i ever even wishfully gone "ok, Drake's had his moment, he'll fade away now" but this album feels like Carter 3 in the sense that it feels just a little bit past the peak moment it could've capitalized on (i.e. last fall just after Meek beef/"Hotline Bling" blowing up) and it'll be hard for him to ever get back to that same moment. i could see him have a long profitable career decline like Jay-Z though, still ubiquitous but with some palpable sense of lost urgency.

"Hype" and "Weston Road Flows" and "Too Good" felt like the initial highlights to me.

As far as peak Drake, 90% of Snapchat is still people driving/lip-syncing or smoking weed to Drake.

i'd like to listen to this, but until it's on spotify, i'm not going to go out of my way. same with lemonade, tbh, but if it doesn't end up on spotify within a few weeks, i'll prob dl it on iTunes.

The second half of this is definitely more "adventurous" sonically but I dunno if that makes it any better?

This reminds me of Take Care in that there's aspects of a few beats that I like, but they still have this overall distant feeling that doesn't connect, "9" being a good example. "Hype"/"Grammys"-style shout flow still goofy imo.

Dude is the reverse of certain other rappers I like who are eccentric/difficult-to-defend in some sense, he seems pretty normal & some of the criticism I see focusing on his persona I think is off-base, just never been sold on him as a rapper or his production aesthetic, the latter of which seems to get little criticism

Looks like the CD edition of this is changed and edited down for time. There's literally no reason to do this when this album would be pretty much a textbook double album candidate if it wasn't crafted specifically for streaming.

I would say "well shit, to get it under 80 minutes, all they had to do was take off Hotline Bling, it is demarcated as a bonus track after all", but I know exactly why they didn't do that

When he did "Hype" on SNL I was surprised he didn't transition into a ballad after the first verse

That song really displays the issues that are still there with his rapping, this over-rehearsed, every syllable precisely mapped out deal. It starts ok and the transition into the hook works but that's it.

Do you have a link? I do remember good songs being in there, but they're packaged with so much redundant emptiness I haven't had the energy to sift them out

I also really, really hate the singles on this album ("Too Good" exempted, if that even counts). NWTS felt like an over-padded disappointment initially, too, but it had the knockout singles to keep me coming back enough for the rest to grow on me

His best album since Take Care if I ignore him. The guests and samples are OK to excellent.

Want to say VIEWS would be a great album if it was cut down to 10 tracks and 40 minutes, but upon revisiting it, I think it would just be pretty good. The dancehall songs are the only ones that feel like expansions on his style, the rest feel like retreads. I like "Feel No Ways" a lot, but can't shake the fact that it sounds like the bitter sequel to "Hold on We're Going Home" (although I wouldn't be totally opposed to Drake further exploring his chillwave side...). Also, the sequencing is terrible. The title track would be a decent closer if the album itself wasn't so exhausting.

Drake shocked me by essentially admitting VIEWS was disappointing artistically ("I was an angry youth when i was writing Views/Seen a side of myself that I never knew" is most direction admission we're going to get) and pivoted with More Life, reestablishing himself critically and further cementing his status as a commercial force. VIEWS will not be his New Jersey.
