slowdive: classic or dud?

Okay, MBV get alot of mentions around here, but I've not heard much about their shoegazing contemporaries. I like Slowdive's first two albums, "Waves" is one of my favourite songs...never really got into the mojave 3...

james e l, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Slowdive are quite wonderful (better than MBV, no, but right on up there). "Avalyn II" on 33 instead of 45 is incredible, try it sometime if you have the vinyl around. Mojave 3 is a big comedown in comparison, though they have their moments.

Trust me, I can talk shoegaze all day if you get me going. Be warned. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Love 'em, especially the Halstead ambient solo -- errrr -- third one. Also have a soft spot for the first Mojave 3.

Bring on Moose.

Andy, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, for crying out loud.

Nick, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What's good about shoegazing ? That's a sincere question. Unlike other types of music I dislike, I don't even get the *theoretical* appeal of it. To me, it's the sound of rock and roll where melody, rocking, rhythm, balls and brains have all been replaced by swirlswirlswirl.

Patrick, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I like swirls.

Andy, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Swirls are very good. It's a question of whether not one likes the sounds, and I do. Who says that because you've got a guitar and an amp that therefore you must always rock out? To hell with that. Variety, variety! Let there be ever more of it!

If you're insistent on the fact, then know that a fair amount of those shoegaze characters did rock out when so inclined. Based on live experience alone, Chapterhouse, Slowdive, Ride, Lush and others could whip things up damn well. But they didn't have to, and things worked just fine regardless -- in fact, they worked spectacularly well. Hurrah!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, no rocking-out obligation whatsoever, I love variety too. I guess I'm just not moved by the swirl.

Patrick, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

'souvlaki' - excellent, stretches bounderies of shoegazing more than MBV - chapterhouse's later stuff got better, pale saints rocked live.

i iz shittin' you no ?

geordie racer, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

To be honest, I never got the appeal of Slowdive when they were releasing albums. Seemed too much like over-emphasis on the sonics, but not enough emphasis on the actual substance underlying it. I recently went back and listened to Pygmalion, and it was rather pleasant. I think the decision to morph into Mojave 3 paid off with much better material, though, especially on the newest.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Mojave 3 are nice without being gripping. They come off better live, admittedly, but the drowsy atmosphere on their first album has turned into my favorite bugaboo, 'classic songwriting.' Just what the world didn't need.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Sound is definitely important--maybe more important than melody to me (gasp!). Therefore, Slowdive please me MUCH. Patrick, you say it's the "sound of rock and roll" with all the "good stuff" taken out, but is it really even the sound of rock and roll? I mean, what the hell IS that, anyway? ;-) I guess if you don't find drowning slowly in a blissful wash of swirling, suffocating guitar textures to be an exhilarating experience, then Slowdive (and their fellow 'gazers) don't have much to offer you. But just listen to the way the chorus SURGES on "Catch the Breeze" off Just for a Day, and tell me you aren't touched...

Clarke B., Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well it sure ain't the sound of polka ! ;) Hey, I'll give Slowdive's "Catch The Breeze" (or almost anything else) a chance if I don't have to buy the record (Napster not being an option).

Patrick, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

yeah, slowdive were the best of the shoegazers when it came to the sweeping crescendoes. 'pygmalion' is brilliant but then so is 'just for a day' and 'souvlaki' and the early eps. many a moonlit drive was soundtracked by 'just for a day' and 'nowhere'.

Someone sent me a tape of Pygmalion three years ago, and I really liked it. The whole album is very good, but the first song, "Rutti", is mindbogglingly beautiful and an absolute masterpiece.

The experience of listening to that song for the first time is one I remember quite fondly: I was sitting in an electronic music studio in an empty mansion, late at night and in the middle of winter, and everything was dead quiet. I had just gotten the tape, and to be honest, wasn't expecting much (actually, what I was expecting turned out to be rather like Slowdive's earlier albums, which I heard soon after and didn't much like). So I was completely caught by surprise by what I heard: beautiful chords, hanging luminously in the air in the way that I thought that only Alan Sparhawk of Low could do. It was rich, understated, and utterly gorgeous. I won't bore you all with a play-by-play of my reaction to each new element in the song, but suffice it to say that I was continually amazed, especially when the shaker entered, about three or four minutes into the song, bringing the whole thing into time in the best possible way.

Whew!

I'm not much for Slowdive's other stuff, as I said, nor am I a big Mojave 3 fan, though Ask Me Tomorrow has a few decent songs. But I really think Pygmalion is a watershed album -- and "Rutti" is one of those moments in music where, in some unexpected synergy of skill and inspiration and who-knows-what, a group creates something of the very highest order.

Phil, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Definitely classic. Though I acknowledge that MBV was "better" at the sorta thing they and Slowdive did, I find that I prefer listening to Slowdive more these days than MBV. Kinda like while I acknowledge that the Beatles were "better" than the Kinks, I'd still rather listen to the latter.

Hard to pinpoint why I've come to prefer Slowdive. Best I can think of is that their music just sounds prettier.

I'm agnostic about Mojave 3. Haven't heard that much and have liked what I have heard, but not blown away either.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Of course never in the same league as MBV. But still very pleasant. I only have the 'Catch the Breeze' E.P. and that one has an effortless beauty. And well...they had the Queen of Indie singing for them. :) The rest of the shoegazers sucked though.

Omar, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

mbv may have been 'objectively' better, but i don't really care about objective. i like mbv a lot, but i always liked slowdive more. the first 3 eps are fantastic esp catch the breeze. the first 2 albums very good too. pygmalion has its moments. mojave 3 were always disappointing though. didn't slowdive release a single as Eternal, on sarah records before they were slowdive?

gareth, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm so sure we had this question about 6 months ago - but I cannae find it anywhere, do old posts eventually get deleted, or can someone remember where it is? I can remeber me and someone else being the only people to stand up for them when they were being completely slated by everyone else.

Have to agree about Pygmalian, an absolute blinder, and just so typical of Alan McGee to drop an act just when they make a masterpiece! Their other albums I can take or leave to be honest, but I find them reasonably pleasant to fall to sleep to (and that's actually a compliment.)

Anyone know what All Natural Lemon and Lime Flavors are up to?

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Bollocks, just looked it up and they have called it a day. Shame as they were the only band which actually did anything interesting with a strict shoegazing sound over the last few years, unless anyone has any tips?

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I guess it all depends on what you define as strict.

In terms of shoegazer-inspired groups that I do love of slightly more recent vintage -- Windy and Carl, happily, have established their own reputation beyond that particular label, though they'll happily confirm their out and out love for all the original greats. If you really like Slowdive, I recommend the excellent Bethany Curve. Landing are a newer group with a lot of promise. Other names coming to mind -- Study of the Lifeless, Polar, Mira, Deardarkhead, Flowchart (at least part of the time)...

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Windy and Carl are not what I'd call a strict shoegazing sound, neither would I call, say, Pygmalion - far too minimal seeing as the genre is a bastard offspring of maximal MBV. Thanks for the recommnedations, I'll have a check on the others, although I heard Bethany Curve on Peel a few years ago and wasn't impressed at the time, but I often change my opinions on music after a few listens.

Slowdive are classic! Thee end ov "Catch the Breeze" sounds like the cocteau twins playing king crimson, or vice versa. It doesn't get much better than that for me. "Souvlaki" is ace too. My friend who deals in used records tells me that shoegazer 12"s are getting expensive! Who'd have thought it?

I think pygmalion is a classic. The only other slovide song i am really fond of is shine. The really ethereal stuff, i havent heard anyone do it like that before. The rest of it, i can see why shoegazing got a bad name.

hey, what about Medicine?

their first album on creation, Shot Forth Self Living is, ahem, a shoegazer classic. seems to have been written out of the creation history though (not even mentioned in the Cavanagh book i think)

gareth, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Now we're talking! Medicine's first album is a total classic. Very good take on MBV. Ahem...good drug album too, so I've been told. :)

1. We do seem to cover everything in the end... I mean, I was thinking of posting this question a few months ago, but thought it would be laughed off the web.

2. Someone said that threads went missing. Indeed. What's happened to my 'Stephin Merritt' (Search & Destroy) thread?

3. I like the first Slowdive LP a lot.

the pinefox, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Bah, Medicine! Crap, all of it. Had the misfortune to see one of their earliest gigs, hated it, hated them from birth to death. Weak cheese and then some.

Brad Laner is a friendly guy to talk to, and his Electric Company stuff is flat out amazing (as is his production for bands like the astounding Furry Things). But Medicine? No, and no again.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Shame on you, Ned, and you were going up in my estimation until you blew it by dissing Medicine. "Shot forth..." is a great album, though listening to it with hindsight it sounds more psychedelic than shoegazing. Still...

Slowdive, f***ing loved 'em. Saw them supporting Ride in early '91, fantastic gig, could hear a word of vocals through their set, just guitars set on 'ethereal stun'. Nobody seems to have mentioned the transitional '5EP' EP, from late '93, when they stopped playing guitars and started to do more ambient/electronica stuff, very nice indeed. It all seemed to match up with what Chapterhouse were trying to do, but the 'House boys got Global Communication in to remix an album (which was great) rather than Reload (the same people) to remix a song (which was still great). I think they toured in late '93 together with Reload / GC as support. Now I'd say '93 was a better year than '94, early Seefeel records, the first Insides album, Spoonfed Hybrid etc....

Anyway, Slowdive - all their albums were great, though "Pygmalion" is the best, all the singles were great too. And to whoever mentioned Eternal, it was only second guitarist Christian who played on the one and only Eternal single on Sarah, but that's a cool semi-shoegazing single too. The first Mojave 3 album was a good late night listen but after the second one tried to hard to be Bob Dylan I gave up, I'm afraid.

Now Moose.... what a band! Their first two EPs and the first Revolver EP were the soundtrack to the best summer of my life. Happy days!

Rob M, Tuesday, 22 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hey, musically I don't care about anyone's estimation but my own, and if I had worthy experiences with Medicine I'd tell you -- AND I DIDN'T. EAT IT, BOY, EAT IT!

Good taste you've got there otherwise, though. ;-) Though Revolver? I don't know, they seemed fairly blah. Early Moose is worthy, however.

two months pass...
Slowdive was brilliant, although it took me a while to get into Pygmalion, and I was initially dissapointed with the first listening.. Mojave 3? well, it's not Slowdive, but the first release has momentary flickers of their former Slowdive-esque sound. I'm suprised nobody mentioned the AMAZING Ride album "Nowhere". Dreams Burn Down is one my my altime fav's.. just a thought. BTW.. to whoever mentioned it earlier.. I like 'Swirls' too.

Revive!! The only Medicine song I really dig is the one where they strum the guitar once and just let it resonate for several minutes. It's the first song on one of their albums - you know the one I mean.

Aaaaanyway, I've been trying to get everything by this here Slowdive band I can get my hands on. The bloody Pygmalion record's been setting me back around 75 bucks on Ebay! But it's all worth it, 'caue it's fucking ACE!! Strange, though. I find My Bloody Valentine boring as church, so why the hell do I like their much-less-acclaimed knockoff artists so much better? Y'know: Slowdive, Ride, Bark Psychosis, Disco Inferno. Strange, strange musical tastes I got.

BEST SLOWDIVE LP: Sure, Souvlaki is pop first class, but that Pygmalion, man. She's a damn ambient MASTERPIECE. Best "ambient" "chillout" whateveryacallit album EVER! Who's with me??

Somebody do a Slowdive CD80 mix CD!! There's still loads of stuff I haven't heard yet. Morningrise?? The self-titled debut EP?? Holding Our Breath?? I wouldn't know it!!

I do not understand people who don't listen to music from the 80s.

As far as I'm concerned, music was INVENTED in the 80s (or mor specifially, with Joy Division). Anything before that is just proto-music.

Curious all this Slowdive love at the mo because only last week I dug out an old tape - unmarked as usual - and found it was a Slowdive live set recorded for Peel in the autumn of '91, followed by the superb Telescopes session from the same month. That's been played a lot at home, and I've got "Pgymalion" waiting to play on the way home tonight, it's a late night train journey in the dark kind of CD and that's what's happening tonight.

No love for the "5EP" here? That's like the perfect mid-point between "Pygmalion" and "Souvlaki". I think I'll have to compile all the EPs together at some point, should make for a stunning collection.

Rob M (Rob M), Thursday, 11 December 2003 09:18 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, so 'Golden Hair' is basically the only thing missing on Blue Day..
Just for a Day is their only mediocre release, I'd say. Pretty formulaic and a bit boring.. Souvlaki, along with Disintegration, = album I've most listened to. Not dated at all and 'Sing' leaves me awestruck to this day, despite the numerous memories I now attach to that song.

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 11 December 2003 10:40 (twenty years ago) link

Ok, so I'm catching up on threads, and I saw this one. Hurrah!

Someone really cool and nice once sent my way an mp3 of Slowdive's "Souvlaki Space Station" and it just about sent me into orbit. I still continue to swoon over this track. It is very dreamy, very atmospheric, very wonderfully perfect for chilling out and letting the day melt away. The same goes for another song off the Souvlaki album, "Some Velvet Morning", which just so happens to be the song I'm listening to now.

*sighs happily* I've been looking to segue away from pure fangirlishness, you know, and actually listening to the whole of the Souvlaki album just might do the job.

The US version -- it was originally done for an issue of Volume and was then attached to the delayed American Souvlaki will all the tracks from the 5 EP except for "In Mind" itself, annoyingly enough.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 December 2003 19:56 (twenty years ago) link

you heard the nancy sinatra and lee hazlewood original dee?

*laughs* I think you might be confusing me with someone who has a broad knowledge of music, hon. I've only heard That Big Hit by Nancy Sinatra and have yet to check out anything by Lee Hazlewood, but I do have to say that earlier on I decided to do an ILE search and found out that it was a cover. Eh. I love Duran's "Watching The Detectives" and I know for damn sure it's a cover, so there's nothing wrong with counting covers here.

Eh. Methinks I should Google before mentioning Other Musical Artists, then. Because I sure as heck don't want to retreat back into that land of fangirl exclusivity (read: only listening to one musical artist for a huge block of time).

From: http://www.chromewaves.net

"I'll warn you straight off - today's post is dedicated to shoegazer
giants Slowdive. If you're not interested, scroll down. Waaaay down.
Why the love-in? Well, the Reading, England-based band will be the
recipients of a double-disc anthology entitled Catch The Breeze on
Sanctuary Records, out September 27 in the UK. I say "recipients of"
because no one from the band had any hand in putting this together [-Ed says Rachel had a bit of input]. Content-wise, it's a decent enough
collection of stuff from their three albums and some EPs (Full
tracklisting here) and considering how hard the non-album material and
Pygmalion are to find, it's filling a real gap in record store shelves."

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 30 July 2004 00:19 (nineteen years ago) link

agreed- Driving with Bert is maybe the best thing Halstead's written. I love it that much. There are a couple of lousy songs(Two Stones in my Pocket, Dreamed I saw Soldiers) on the album, but the good ones are incredible.

I really like the Rachel Goswell album, but then I like that sort of thing; brings me be back to the stuff I was into from 12-15 or so. It's really quite pretty, even fragile. Search 'Deelay' and 'Plucked', sort a start. I can see the argument that it's eminently forgettable, though... a shame.

derrick (derrick), Friday, 30 July 2004 00:22 (nineteen years ago) link

i was hoping the rachel g album would be fragile, but it's middle of the road rock for the most part, kinda like late model kristen hersh. the neil h album is aimless, it's not cheery or melancholy, it just sort of exists in some strange position in between that doesn't evoke any feelings whatsoever.

they are already doing another mojave 3 album, allegedly.

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 30 July 2004 03:31 (nineteen years ago) link

there's about 5-6 fragile songs, and, yeah, 3-4 MOR rock songs, maybe a couple more. I usually skip track 3 and 12, to be honest.

the halstead album, though... how does 'Driving with Bert' not completely slay you? The chorus of 'Hi-lo and In Between' as well? hm.

I’m still brand new but wanted to chime in, though I find it strange that you guys have all these classic or duds posts.

I would say classic but happen to really like a lot of stuff that came out around that time and would not put dud next to many bands except something like Curve. I also think its silly to compare Slowdive to Mojave 3 because they are very different bands. Mojave 3 are often overlooked because of the former but I think they are also really good. The best M3 album, IMO, happens to be Out Of Tune with the glorious “This Road I’m Travelling.” I will agree that Rachel’s album is just kind of there because I never listen to it. Neil’s album, on the other hand, is quite good though it does have a few fillers. I even think I listened to it more than the last M3 album. I was on slsk last week and Neil Halstead happened to be hanging out in one of the rooms. I joined the room after he was already chatting and was wondering why everyone was acting so strange. He was having computer problems and left. So I was writing about this on a music message board I usually post at, than low and behold he came back. He was saying that he is going to have a new solo album come out in February. I tried to say hi but his computer was having problems and I never got a word in edge wise.

Moose are brilliant and will have to disagree with most of you on this thread again. The reason I say that is because they became better once they put away their petals, though I love that stuff as well. Moose turned into one of the best bands of the 1990’s once they mellowed out.

Ask Meil about the label he's working on putting together. You might always want to ask him about the studio he built. For both. I'd also like to know how they feel their solo projects differ from M3. I'd be weary of asking too many Slowdive related questions: I'm sure they'd both rather talk about present projects.

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Saturday, 27 November 2004 16:35 (nineteen years ago) link

i agree with bee, moose improved immeasurably once they went country. the early eps are great but they found their stride or their sound when they discovered 'witchita lineman'. russell moose has too lovely a voice for it to have remained obscured by the pedals. they are recording a new record now, according to the le grand magistery website.

Keith, where in the LGM website did you find that Moose were recording a new album?

daavid (daavid), Saturday, 27 November 2004 22:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Now I get the whole classic or dud thing because I started my first thread.

I have most of that Moose stuff up on slsk, same user name. I also had a request for some EP’s so Liquid Eye Makeup and Baby It’s Over have been added but only for a limited time. I also dug into my Boo Radleys singles, again because of requests. Usually only on at night, California time. That Moose news is fantastic and made my day.

I can see staying away from Slowdive related stuff, as far as questions are concerned, but have always wondered what happened to that drummer? I caught them live a few times and he was insane, always blew me away.

You left before the Pygmalion album, what were your reasons for leaving?

- Neil was taking so much time writing and he moved to London so the rest of us were stuck in Reading frustrated. We weren’t allowed to contribute and I wanted to keep playing music and wrote songs so I moved on.

- I recently saw Nick and Christian and they said they wished they’d left when I went as I believe it all went stale. But I hold no grudges and would definitely like to see them all again. Christian has already been down to see Televise play live so hopefully the others will make it to a show.

How much do you really care about sonic profile? They sound a little more full and more dynamic, as usual, but it's not as if there's much keeping the originals from the way they were presumably meant to sound -- not a whole lot that was asking to be "fixed."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 21:24 (eighteen years ago) link

My overall sense is that these remasters are less about provoking re-buying from Slowdive fans, and more about just packaging this stuff neatly into someone's back-catalog: now everything's in print and available, and all the singles and EPs you won't see anymore in used shops are collected up on the bonus discs. Sort of archival more than exciting! new! expanded! Which is reasonable, because I'd expect some small level of interest in these records to continue indefinitely; I don't they "date" or get surpassed by new things.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 21:29 (eighteen years ago) link

So Pitchfork reviewed these today and gave them very high ratings: Just for a Day 7.0, Souvlaki 9.3, and Pygmalion 8.7. I love this band so have no problem with the ratings but do these seem a little high? I just think Slowdive were about the fifth best band out of this era. My favorite era for music so I have no problem but just really surprised is all.

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 06:10 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm not too concerned about the exact rating, but the albums are ranked properly, which is more important.

The early EP's absolutely obliterate "Pygmalion" though, while not quite reaching the heights of "Souvlaki", so maybe that 8.7 is too high after all.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 06:15 (eighteen years ago) link

i've never heard pygmalion but neither of the other albums is what i would call a "great" album. 9.3 is surely way too high for Souvlaki, even by a hardcore fan's standards

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 06:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Speaking not just for Pitchfork, but generally, I don't think 7.0 is an outstandingly high rating. 8.7s are given out frequently to (imo) all sorts of average flotsam, and 9.3 is perhaps a touch excessive, but for an album that (allegedly) stands up as a shining example of the genre a decade on it's perfectly understandable. And lets face it, the majority of broadly guitar-based music in this particular section of the marketplace has taken a collosal dive downwards in creativity levels since that time. I'd expect "Loveless" would be a straight 9.9 these days if up for reissue?

I think you have to use your own sense of adjustment with these things. I'm in aggreement with that scaruffi person frankly (http://www.scaruffi.com/music.html) ratings are over-inflated right across the board. They could sorely do with bringing in line with reality, but it's never going to happen whilst commercial pressures exist. Ratings kinda suck anyway but they're still useful (as the most limited gauge of quality possible).

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 06:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I think 9.3 is actually pretty low for 'Souvlaki', while, granted, 'Pygmalion' is pretty high.

Souvlaki and Pygmalion are rated about right, although Slowdive have always been one of my favourite bands.

I'd of given JFAD less than 7.0, even though i still enjoy it. The bonus stuff on JFAD is great though, alot of their best non-Souvlaki work was on those early singles.

They could have put bonus tracks on the Pygmalion release though, all the demos are avaliable on your favourite p2p (as well as the Souvlaki demos) and are pretty good as far as demos go.

If it's really as good as it's meant to be (I only heard Souvlaki Space Station, the track a few weeks ago & I'm inclined to believe it may well be so) a 9.0 is still a huge mark of approval.

I'm not sure quibbling about decimals matters that much (retract what I said above ok?). I'd only consider it 'low' in an environment where everything else is absurdly exaggerated. 9 to me = exceptional, close to essential, a clearly influential & groundbreaking release (for reissues).

Didn't Clap Your Hands Say Yeah get a 9? =)

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 09:16 (eighteen years ago) link

But then, that fits with what Nabisco's saying, how these reissues aren't meant for the obsessive fans. A box set full of goodies would be nice for them/us.

My take:

I saw Slowdive around ten times in and around Los Angeles for those first two albums. That drummer brought Just for a Day to life and was a madman on the kit. Some of my favorite B-sides are on those early EPs and are the extra traks for the first release. So I actually think JFAD is underrated because of the bonus disc. Souvlaki is right because it really is that good. I have owned Pygmalion since 2001 when I bought it at Amoeba San Francisco for cheep and never got into it. People love that album and I should find out why but that is around a 7.0 for me at the moment. Slowdive live blew me away because of their amazing drummer that you can’t really experience that aspect on record but live he made you pay attention.

You can't really justify rating JFAD for the bonus disc and giving it a higher mark. You have to rate the album not the bonus tracks. Definitely right though, the JFAD extra tracks are swell.

Were you at that Roxy show on the Souvlaki tour?

Was the date Monday April 11, 1994? Yes I was at that show, and was also at the raggedy place that was upstairs (maybe) can't find a stub for this show but was the only show I saw at this place. If I remember right it was off Hollywood Blvd, maybe Sunset and was a great show as well but bands shouldn’t have played this place but they did.

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 09:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Yep, on Sunset in 1994. Great great show. I has such a crush on Rachel G at that time that my little teenage heart melted when I got to say hello after the show...

I shall be buying the Pygmalion reissue, as I completely blanked it first time out. Of course I'm taking youse guys' word for it that it's any good at all. (I am aph34r3d it may be as rub as Mojave 3.)

Anyone want to buy my copy of Souvlaki + Blue Day in 2CD set? I could then happily get the other 2 reissues.

Wasn't at the Roxy show but the show in Fullerton the day before (or day after). And that was mighty fine. I did see them at the Roxy the previous year opening for Catherine Wheel, though.

Haha, yes I know the Roxy is on Sunset. I was actually talking about another time I saw them at this place that was in an upstairs club off Sunset I think. It felt like it was someone living room or something like that, never did see another show at that place. I was also head over heels in love with Rachel as well. Never did know they played in Fullerton the next night as that was just right around the corner of where I lived at the time and would of went to that show if known. I did see Ride/Slowdive at the Coach House the tour before however, great double bill that one was.

Saw Ride/Slowdive at the Palace the day after -- and the day after that the Pale Saints opened instead! And this was the last tour with Ian in the band too. Swank.

This is what I saw in about one month in 1992:

April 24 - Teenage Fanclub (Fairfax High School)
April 25 – The Charlatans (Palace)
April 28 - The Sugarcubes (Palace)
May 9 – Catherine Wheel (Whisky A Go Go)
May 18 – Blur (Palace)
May 28 – Ride with Slowdive (Coach House)
May 29 – Ride with Slowdive (Palace)
May 30 – Ride with Pale Saints (Palace)
June 2 – Pale Saints (Whisky A Go Go)

Not to forget the Cure twice at the end of June that year.

keyth (keyth), Thursday, 1 December 2005 04:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Keyth were you in Los Angeles in the early 90s as well? I saw almost all those shows: ride/lush (yes), ride/slowdive (yes), slowdive/catherine wheel (yes), catherine wheel/house of love/ocean colour scene* (yes), curve/majesty crush (nope), curve/spiritualized/jamc/medicine (yes), revolver/drop nineteens (yes), kitchens of distinction/bleach (nope), pale saints (yes), chapterhouse (fuck yeah).

I don’t make that many shows anymore, since moving back to Los Angeles, because 1) in San Francisco they were right outside my door and didn’t have to drive miles and miles. 2) Ticketmaster can go to HELL!

*I know ILM hates OCS but they were a great live band and became much better as the years went on. Everything doesn’t need to be new and inventive all the time, stealing from the best is OK every once in awhile.

Honestly I burned out on Mojave 3 quick after that (quite excellent) first album. They achieved a drowned-piano sound on that one they haven't quite gotten again since, and ultimately I think the Walkabouts (say) do the male/female vocal-with-country-hints balancing act with more range and talent, if not quite as consistent in terms of duets.

I'm not sure about all this Mojave 3 business, but Souvlaki and Pygmalion (in that order) are utterly fantastic. Like being absolutely loaded with painkillers and wine and maybe some ecstasy (but you could never appreciate the music fully if you were actually on them all (at once, anyway)).

'souvlaki' is the good one, right? some friend of mine had it in like '95 or something. he was talking it up, i never bothered for some reason.

gear (gear), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 03:23 (seventeen years ago) link

a.w.: Album came out late '91, I would have been...20. It was either that first album, Just for a Day, or one of the earlier EPs (which, if you played the vinyl at 33 rather than 45, are just utterly mesmerizing).

Souvlaki is a favorite for a lot of people, because it's them starting to be a *little* less full-on shoegaze, but not entirely. Pygmalion is kinda the art favorite, their Durutti Column tribute to a large extent.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 03:38 (seventeen years ago) link

who do they most sound like, out of all the shoegaze bands? the only one i ever got into, and i don't even know if they're shoegaze, was catherine wheel.

gear (gear), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 03:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Catherine Wheel were more like Chameleons obsessives crossed with classic rock. (No bad thing per se; I loved them too.)

Who do Slowdive most sound like? Well, jeez, in a way they ARE the ultimate shoegaze band! (MBV are in their own universe but obviously none of the other gaze bands could exist without them as an example.) As friend Stripey once put it to me years ago, "They'll be the band that most people will claim as an influence because they're both so atmospheric and so accessible." And she was right.

So basically -- mixed male/female vocals, often singing together, sometimes separately, LOTS of digital delay and zoned-out ambience, total goth fetish as well (early eighties Cure basslines in particular). Again, though, this is the earliest stuff in particular.

One thing that a lot of people forget about the band -- they could be LOUD. Saw them three times and while, again, they didn't achieve MBV levels of volume, they were definitely trying to really crank it up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 03:47 (seventeen years ago) link

"Souvlaki" is their best record, but I would start with some of the early EP's -- particularly tracks like "Morningrise" and "Avalyn" for the full-on hazy wash of spectral guitar fuzz swirl etc.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 09:11 (seventeen years ago) link

(shoegazer cliches, over and out)

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 09:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, it's weird the way that *they* have become *the* shoegazer band to namecheck as an influence for bands that aren't really shoegaze - electronic artists, especially.

Whereas Lush and Ride, who are the first generation (i.e. not MBV) bands who I think of as utterly definitive of the genre seem to have fallen by the wayside.

Maybe that's because of the derivative tails on the end of their shoegazing careers (Britpop, Oasis, etc.) Or maybe because Slowdive hit the cliches the heaviest, so those looking for those cliches will be made happiest by them.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 09:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe it's because they're simply, like, better than all those other bands? Anyway, Souvlaki is both their best album and probably the best entry point.

Baaderonixx in the year of the locusts (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 09:29 (seventeen years ago) link

funny how (IIRC, unlikely after all this time) they were probably the most persecuted in the UK press at the time too, I barely remember a kind word being said about them compared with the unkind words but occasional grudging praise/admittance of "rock" qualities given over to Ride, Catherine Wheel, MBV and the rest. Maybe because they looked so middle-class & polite, I remember it being pointed out that they seemed to lack for an image compared to even the other shoegazers (the term itself drawing attention to their refusal to communicate with the usual rock poses). The NME seemed especially frightened/bemused by this, but hey at least Suede eventually came along to "save" us :-P

eh (fandango), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 10:10 (seventeen years ago) link

But I don't think they *are* better than those other bands. I got the reissue of the first Slowdive record at the same time I found a cheap sale version of an early Boo Radleys record. I can tell you which one had born up better, and which I've been listening to more. The latter!

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 10:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I think they're the most pliable somehow, maybe easier to be absorbed into other peoples music? a lot of those other bands had quirks which seemed to mark them out from each other, Slowdive would seem to be not maybe the most cliched, but the most generic of them all? I don't mean that as an insult fwiw.

I finally have SOUVLAKI. After listening to it in its entirety and then listening to LOVELESS... I've realzed that these two records are so different that they shouldn't really be compared. While the vocals are similar, the sounds from the instruments on SOUVLAKI are so much lighter (a la the Cocteau Twins). This really sounds like something you could sleep to, or you could have it gently wake you up in the morning. My favorite song is easily "Sing," which is probably better than anything on LOVELESS (fyi, Loveless is the best LP I've ever heard). It's definitely Sexier than anything on it. I immediately see a string of darkly-lit, slow-mo erotic images whenever I listen to it. Alas, the song after it is a let down.

Thinking about it, the time would be exactly right for a Slowdive one-off reunion.

baaderonixx, Thursday, 14 August 2008 10:57 (fifteen years ago) link

One thing I've found about Slowdive is that the time of day that you listen to their albums can strongly affect your perception of them. Here are the times you should listen to them:

"Just for a Day" - Listen to around dawn
"Souvlaki" - listen to at 1:00am
"Pygmalion" listen to during a hot, windless afternoon in a desert

If you listen at different times, they simply do not work, and can even sound horrible.

I think they were very good initially because they were unselfconscious. i.e. they were middle-class MBV fans making music for middle-class MBV fans. As soon as they became aware that they had to adopt some kind of stance, and deny what they fundamentally were, then they lost it.

PhilK, Friday, 15 August 2008 21:49 (fifteen years ago) link

One thing I've found about Slowdive is that the time of day that you listen to their albums can strongly affect your perception of them. Here are the times you should listen to them:

"Just for a Day" - Listen to around dawn
"Souvlaki" - listen to at 1:00am
"Pygmalion" listen to during a hot, windless afternoon in a desert

If you listen at different times, they simply do not work, and can even sound horrible.

-- res, Thursday, August 14, 2008 9:14 AM (1 week ago) Bookmark Link

As much as I want to disagree with this, especially the not work and even sound horrible part, I would be lying if the best time I heard Just for a Day wasn't on a brisk spring morning at 6:30 AM, and Souvlaki at 1:30 AM in a dark basement, and, well I was in an actual desert on a hot, windless afternoon about 2 months ago, but I didn't think to bring Pygmalion.

Slowdive's albums are like ripening bananas. JFaD is the album equivalent of a banana with a slight greenish hue: firm, flavour's a bit bland and off, but otherwise solid and eatable. Good, but should have waited a day or two. Souvlaki is just perfection: perfect colour, texture, feel, taste - definitively ripe. Pygmalion tastes just fine despite what anyone says about the admittedly present brown spots (but they're not really that noticeable anyways), the heightened texture and softness of it aren't necessarily worse, but not as good as it was in it's prime. It's also excellent for baking.

As much as I want to disagree with this, especially the not work and even sound horrible part,

That's sort of an exaggeration, but really, if you listen to "Souvlaki" when it's bright and sunny outside, it does not compute at all. It just works so much better in the dark.

eight months pass...

Out of the blue at work Friday I got this urge to dig up their first couple of (non-album) 12" singles. I guess in the U.S. these were compiled nicely on Blue Day later, but I only had them on vinyl. So I'm having fun with this stuff now. I'd love it if anyone would say something about this band because I was thinking about them pretty intensely on Friday.

Disruptor of Morals (Bimble), Sunday, 26 April 2009 12:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Also a really interesting fact I learned was that the tracks on their first 12" were only part of their early demos. I guess this wouldn't be too extraordinary except that I had that blue flexi disc of a couple other tracks from that and they were extremely boring. "Beach Song" or whatever it was? I wonder if that flexi is worth anything now. I'll sell it if anyone wants it...

i'm always so impressed by how good my old u.s. version of souvlaki sounds. the 90's version with bonus tracks "not available on import". its loud and its the good kind of loud. i'm cranking it now. no need to remaster this album ever. just copy this copy.

scott seward, Thursday, 5 April 2012 12:50 (twelve years ago) link

this from 2008 is so not on the money:

"While the vocals are similar, the sounds from the instruments on SOUVLAKI are so much lighter (a la the Cocteau Twins). This really sounds like something you could sleep to, or you could have it gently wake you up in the morning."

scott seward, Thursday, 5 April 2012 12:51 (twelve years ago) link

you really need to hear it loud. it's definitely not light when loud. it's a powerful record.

scott seward, Thursday, 5 April 2012 12:52 (twelve years ago) link

"just for a day" is an example of a record that needs to be played loud. there's enormous atmosphere to the songs, but no density. play it loud and you can lose yourself in it, otherwise it plays through without you noticing a thing.

I hope Rachel remains healthy but does anyone have a realistic reason for not wanting the reunion? There certainly isn't one in Ned's link. I respect your opinion but if it had sway for any reason on whether they actually did reunite for some shows (is that all we're talking about or new material too?) than it would be incredibly unfair for some of us younger listeners that would love to have the chance to see them live.

Evan, Thursday, 30 August 2012 15:49 (eleven years ago) link

not sure what your reasoning is, Ned - are you against reunions because they spoil the perfect memories?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 30 August 2012 15:54 (eleven years ago) link

I'm starting to really hate this sense of entitlement, that people feel like they should have the chance to see a band live that they missed the first time round, as if the band somehow *owes* them a performance. It's one thing if a band really want another go, and a chance to revisit old ground - but I don't get the feeling from Neil that he wants that. "We're not going to be allowed not to reform" is not a good enough reason for them to do it. But I guess if his circles are getting smaller and smaller (and his records come out on bittier record labels) then it might be a financial decision.

My memories are that Slowdive weren't actually very good live, so it's not as if I don't want them pissing all over treasured memories or anything. I just don't see why they *should* and I am starting to have a lot more respect for bands that say "nah, we're done with that" and don't go back.

my god it's full of straw (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Thursday, 30 August 2012 15:55 (eleven years ago) link

Well I did see Slowdive, several times, and I remember their shows being absolutely stunning. So I don't have any sense of entitlement, I would simply like to experience that joy and elation again.

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Thursday, 30 August 2012 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

I just feel like, if they don't want to, it should be their choice, not yours.

my god it's full of straw (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Thursday, 30 August 2012 16:00 (eleven years ago) link

Well, of course it will. That "we won't be allowed not to" sounds like it was said with a wry smile on his face. No-one is going to be holding a gun to their heads. Even if they get offered silly money to do it, it's up to them.

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Thursday, 30 August 2012 16:03 (eleven years ago) link

Well, I'm not personally dragging Neil back to Slowdive and I don't feel like I deserve to see them live, and I can't speak for anyone that may be pushing him in that direction. I didn't say they "should" but if they are anyway, but I would be upset if someone talked them out of it. Unless doing it actually harms them in some way.

Evan, Thursday, 30 August 2012 16:04 (eleven years ago) link

WCC you may be reading into "We're not going to be allowed not to reform" a bit. It seems more likely that it is their choice rather than some crazy scenario where they are "forced" into it.

Evan, Thursday, 30 August 2012 16:19 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, i mean jesus, it's really skewed thinking to imagine fans going along to a show feeling a sense of "entitlement", like the band is finally paying off a debt. maybe they're just happy and grateful to hear the songs they love performed live.

charlie h, Thursday, 30 August 2012 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

The worst thing that can happen is that a lot of people spend some good money to see a half-hearted performance. It may diminish their legacy/magic temporarily if they totally suck for some reason, but everyone who attends would be more likely to be super super grateful to have the opportunity to have seen them anyway.

Demanding they don't go on tour because of a suspicion of their motives is not that much less born of self entitlement as demanding they go on tour because you would like to see them?

I think they're grown ups who can choose for themselves what they want to do (shit, maybe they just want to make a bunch of money, but is that a reason to stop them either?)

See this is why I'm wary of the taste of people who say their favourite showgaze band / the only good shoegaze band is Slowdive.

And let me reiterate, I don't dislike Slowdive! I own several of their albums!

It's just that when people who don't really like shoegaze slag off shoegaze, all those negative qualities they use to slag it off - droney, boring, repetitive, mindless prettiness, sexless, middle class. Slowdive are, like, the utter epitome of those qualities. They are quite quintessential of a view of shoegaze that 1) really quite annoys me and 2) doesn't represent anything of ~what I loved~ about shoegaze.

So when someone tells me that Slowdive were the best shoegaze band, I just think "you are looking for a very different thing in music than I am."

Also, if you are over the age of 15 and ~pretend to like~ any kind of music, you really are a tosser.

hmmm I'm way over 15 and I think to this day Slowdive is still, as back then, my favorite "shoegaze" band. I don't see how they epitomize "droney, boring, repetitive, mindless prettiness, sexless, middle class" - for me Souvlaki is the opposite of all that.

When I see people use a word - like "pretending" - I tend to think that they mean what they say, or they would have phrased it differently.

But I have this argument every time we talk about Shoegaze. That if someone thinks that Slowdive are the ~pinnacle of shoegaze~ and bands like Pale Saints are "crap" - that person is clearly looking for something so different in music than what I loved about shoegaze that it would be pointless for me to use their tastes as reference for anything meaningful to me.

my god it's full of straw (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Friday, 31 August 2012 09:12 (eleven years ago) link

You mean you find Pales Saints are any less pretty, sexless and middle class? hmmmm...

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 31 August 2012 09:15 (eleven years ago) link

They are less *mindlessly* pretty - i.e. the prettiness in their music has a purpose, and is usually used as a counterpoint to psychedelic noise of confusion. They are definitely less sexless (rowr) and middle class I don't know about, but they were from Leeds instead of the Thames Valley so the Northern perspective was more interesting than yet another OxfordReadingLondon band.

Yes, yes, I'm being facetious, but their music had a scrappy spikiness amidst all the prettiness that I found texturally just much more interesting.

Glad to see someone defending Pale Saints, a great band. I love the little motto on their "Flesh balloon" EP which read "Scene but not herd". So many great aspects to them - their roots in C86 indie (their first demo was reviewed in the short lived indie "Underground" mag from 87), the way they merged dreamy with spiky, the layers of sounds, Ian Masters' slightly skewed basslines, and Spoonfed Hybrid is one of my favourite albums ever. As shoegazing was at its height in 91 they really weren't there, their Northern slant meant they weren't seen to be with the Ride / Slowdive / Chapterhouse crowd. Certainly the inkies at the time never mentioned them in the same breath as the other "Scene that celebrates itself" bands.

Rob M Revisited, Friday, 31 August 2012 10:57 (eleven years ago) link

Oh and pinnacle of shoegaze = Moose's first two EPs, imho. Hard to believe that 20 years after the fact people are still arguing about what shoegazing is / was.

Rob M Revisited, Friday, 31 August 2012 11:08 (eleven years ago) link

Pale Saints toured with and had intra-band links to Lush! Hence their STCI connection. But Lush are another band who have been unfortunately and unfairly pushed down the shoegaze canon.

The way I recall it, it was Ride - Ride EP, Lush - Mad Love EP, and Pale Saints - The Comforts of Madness all released in quick succession at the start of 1990 and shown on Snub TV and those bands were often talked about together. The rest came later.

I've been to Suffolk (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 31 August 2012 11:44 (eleven years ago) link

Don't you think Poliopolice was using the word "pretending" in hindsight? Like now that he realized he is very over those bands and his change of heart makes him feel like he was fooling himself the whole time. Just a guess. I mean when I hear people say pretend in that context they generally aren't letting you in to some conscious poseuring they'd participated in at some point.

Evan, Friday, 31 August 2012 12:46 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, you're taking it too literally. by the time i was into this stuff, the whole shoegaze thing was over by nearly a decade-- therefore, not en vogue at all. when i said 'pretend', it's not that i was trying to attach myself to a scene (because there was none by then), but that i was trying hard to appreciate that which was described to me as great examples of that genre after having gotten heavily into MBV and Medicine first. for that reason, i wanted to like Ride and Pale Saints so much, until i discovered, after much effort and money wasted, that there was really not much depth or staying power to most of them; they were just bands whose names were repeated, perhaps because there simply weren't that many notable names in the genre to begin with.

so does this mean, as you charge, that i don't like really shoegaze because i think the vast majority of bands in that genre were kind of bad, and thus i'm a shoegaze poseur and have no credibility? i'm willing to concede that some people might think that, but as least i can honestly say that i spent an extended period exploring the genre thoroughly, and drew my own conclusion that most of it really isn't that good. that's just my opinion; no one has to agree with it!

Poliopolice, Friday, 31 August 2012 13:29 (eleven years ago) link

No, what I'm trying to get through to you is that "I don't like this" is not the same as "this is bad."

Saying "this band has no staying power" when there are people ITT who still get those records out occasionally, 20 years later, is just a tad of an arrogant thing to say. It's fine for you to not like it. But you don't get to redefine the boundaries of a genre that was established 20 years ago, just to suit your particular tastes.

my god it's full of straw (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Friday, 31 August 2012 13:32 (eleven years ago) link

No, what I'm trying to get through to you is that "I don't like this" is not the same as "this is bad."

Yes it is. When someone says "this is bad", it is implicit that what they are really saying is "I don't like this." All opinions are relative.

Evan, Friday, 31 August 2012 13:46 (eleven years ago) link

But seriously he is just talking about his own opinions on shoegaze. As much as I disagree about the horrible things he says about Swervedriver!

Evan, Friday, 31 August 2012 13:47 (eleven years ago) link

Shoegaze isn't really a genre tho

albvivertine, Friday, 31 August 2012 14:08 (eleven years ago) link

Yes it is. When someone says "this is bad", it is implicit that what they are really saying is "I don't like this." All opinions are relative.

It's like squares and rectangles. All squares are rectangles---not all rectangles are squares.

If you say, "This is bad," then you are always saying, "I don't like this." (Although, I would argue against that.)

However, when you say, "I don't like this," you aren't always saying, "This is bad."

Katy Perry is bad = I don't like Katy Perry.

I don't like Led Zeppelin /= Led Zeppelin is bad.

...I'm just arguing to argue.

No, what I'm trying to get through to you is that "I don't like this" is not the same as "this is bad."

I don't disagree with you-- and honestly i'm finding it a little perplexing that you think i'm trying to tag all the wikipedia articles for Pale Saints and Swervedriver with the category "Objectively Bad Artists from the 90s." it's just an opinion; you are free to disagree, just as all people are free to disagree about anything. i'm fine with admitting that my opinion on anything is not the be-all-end-all, and that i may have wrongly maligned Chapterhouse. :)

Nevertheless, I think it's only fair to point out that your line of argument would also hold that guys like Thomas Kinkade are good artists-- it's just that people who don't like Kinkade don't like that kind of art. I'm actually quite fine with this; I consider art completely subjective. Even if 100% people think it's terrible, it's still subjective to me because there's no objective way to measure artistic quality. I've actually had people try to convince me that Thomas Kinkade is objectively bad; i find this proposition ridiculous.

Going back a post or two on unreleased songs- "Beach song" was on a flexi issued by Sunday Records with another song whose name escapes me. They were part of Slowdive's initial demo tape, alongside "Slowdive" and "Avalyn". Alan McGee preferred the slower stuff so they stuck to that direction. "Sleep" and "Take me down" were by Eternal, a five piece band on Sarah Records who split up after one EP when their guitarist Christian left them to join Slowdive.

I'm very conflicted over the idea of new material. For a long time Halstead seemed like he had lost almost all interest in his older style, but maybe after long enough the urge for this sort of stuff could come back?
How could anyone really know if they could tap back into it, as good (or better) than it was?

Does anyone know of any bands who got back together to write some music and said "this really isnt working, we better split up again" before they recorded anything?

Does anyone know the name of that old Slowdive demo that was just cheery whistling and piano?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 26 January 2014 22:32 (ten years ago) link

The Associates did just that, recorded some stuff and bailed wihout releasing it at the time, though it came out on an odds and sods comp a decade later. And it was pretty good!

Well I don't think they'd tease out this big announcement just to say they were considering giving it a go in Neil's garage and see what came out of it. I'm expecting a mini tour and a few festivals. Not much more

It felt like we were playing to people who 'got it' and some of our favourite performances were on those tours. We have a special connection to our audience in North America and we can't wait to return in 2014!"

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 19:35 (nine years ago) link

I haven't yet :(

Everyone says they're just so so so loud it's kind of killed my enthusiasm. I just don't want to submit myself to excessive loudness.

I am lame.

Evan, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 19:37 (nine years ago) link

MBV makes a very enveloping loudness, it goes beyond just an auditory feeling into a very visceral physical sensation. it didn't hurt my ears, it like, took hold of my chest. this was mainly the noise portion during YMMR, i'd say prior to that they weren't shockingly loud. i honestly loved it.

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 19:48 (nine years ago) link

Nice to see that they're focusing on a new album and would like to make the band last as long as possible. A string of new albums would be amazing. But they also sound very firm about disbanding if they can't come up with great enough material, which is reassuring.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:43 (nine years ago) link

Lovely show. Remarkable how much they and Low have in common. I'll always give the edge to Low, who do more with less, and whose lyrics are more than just another component in a big wash of sound (imo), but man, that wash of sound is so cool.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 21:55 (nine years ago) link

Seattle would be a great place to see Slowdive. I lived in Olympia in the early 90s and I think bands like Slowdive encapsulate that time and place better than any of the grunge bands.

I always loved Souvlaki, but didn't care for Pygmalion and thought Just For A Day was crap. I just discovered the Blue Day EP, though. Amazing! I think it's easily on par with Souvlaki. What a great EP!

3×5, Friday, 7 November 2014 21:53 (nine years ago) link

I've been listening to Blue Day today.
"Morningrise" is my current favorite Slowdive track.

Trip Maker, Friday, 7 November 2014 22:09 (nine years ago) link

(You might already know this but...) 'Blue Day' is a collection of tracks off their first three EPs (Slowdive, Morningrise and Holding Our Breath). I don't know when it was released, but obviously after the actual EPs in 1990/91. I got it free with Souvlaki.

Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 7 November 2014 23:59 (nine years ago) link

^ a collection of tracks, but not a collection of *all* of the tracks from the first three EPs

Annoyingly, 'Catch The Breeze' isn't on it (for starters). Annoying for me, because although I bought 'Slowdive' on vinyl when it came out, I taped the next two EPs off a friend, and the tape got distorted on that track, so I was initially pleased to discover that the Souvlaki bonus disc gave me those taped tracks on CD, but then frustrated to find one of my favourites had been mysteriously left off.

it's easily better than the first album.

If I overstate, it's not by much. I'm defining 'comeback' as a new release after 10+ years. I was not one of those impressed with the MBV comeback. The new Psychedelic Furs is very good but not even close to Slowdive. I guess Scott Walker's "Tilt" qualifies, that's a strong choice. What else would you consider contending for the title?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:56 (three years ago) link

a tribe called quest for one :)

i loved m b v as well, but yeah

imago, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:57 (three years ago) link

i saw them on the initial 2014 tour, which was pre-new material. i never saw them in the classic period, obviously, but it was a right fine show. and i've talked to folks who saw them in 1993 and then again in 2014 and all of them preferred the 2014 shows.

the atcq "reunion" album was a q-tip solo record that just happened to heavily feature members of the group. it was okay, at best.

Portishead's Third is up there for comeback albums too

octobeard, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:13 (three years ago) link

yes, absolutely agreed.

and i've talked to folks who saw them in 1993 and then again in 2014 and all of them preferred the 2014 shows.

Quite by chance I'm wearing my 1992 Slowdive tour shirt today (still looks great and I can still fit in it, both key). The early 90s shows were great but generally they were playing opening slots or very small shows in sometimes inapposite venues. The reunion shows felt like they finally had the huge crowds they well deserved as well as the space to really go to town on the older songs, properly vast.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:23 (three years ago) link

The reunion show I saw was sold out but not much bigger than the venue they'd previous played here in the early '90s, even with a draw like Low (!) opening.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:26 (three years ago) link

Black Messiah up there on that comeback list too.

henry s, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:36 (three years ago) link

no no, you misunderstand: we're talking best comebacks.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 19:21 (three years ago) link

Yes, yes. But there's a new Simon Scott album coming out.

djh, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 19:44 (three years ago) link

Oh, sorry! Thought we were just talking about comebacks in general. Never mind!

henry s, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 19:55 (three years ago) link

we should probably circle back around to Slowdive at some point?

https://open.spotify.com/album/4JHDtnmaGvmssF1E5WHfCB

wow they've officially released a remastered version of "sleep", one of their many unreleased tracks that's been widely bootlegged. it's a great one and really makes you wonder how it never got a proper release. this sounds a little better than the bootlegs too.

i wonder if they're putting out an official compilation of all that material? i presume this is for something like that, or a deluxe reissue or something?

neil said in a recent interview that the new album is slowly coming together & they're hoping it'll be out by the time they're playing primavera next year.

ufo, Saturday, 10 July 2021 04:05 (two years ago) link

ah i'd never looked into it before but it turns out "sleep" was written by christian savill & originally released by his previous band eternal on their only single in 1990

get shrunk by this funk. (Austin), Thursday, 10 February 2022 22:09 (two years ago) link

Yes, the self-titled was very good certainly but it was the tour for it that convinced me they were truly back and in a better place than ever; absolutely found a way to build on the legacy, do things with their past work differently at many points, and respond so well to the now far, far bigger crowds they're getting, and from younger listeners too, than they did then. Absolutely think this will continue the upward path.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 February 2022 22:13 (two years ago) link

Someone played "Souvlaki" recently. It sounded really good, better than I remembered.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 10 February 2022 22:37 (two years ago) link

Very. Their albums viewed with time and distance simply sound great, period. I stand by my descriptions of the albums at 2 and 7 on this page

https://pitchfork.com/features/lists-and-guides/9966-the-50-best-shoegaze-albums-of-all-time/?page=5

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 February 2022 22:39 (two years ago) link

I have extremely fond memories of "Souvlaki." I was never a Slowdive fan - I blame the glut of shoegaze at the time - but I was a huge Eno fan, so of course picked up "Souvlaki" (maybe as an import?) ASAP. And while it never clicked as an album I pulled out all the time, I did used to listen to it as I fell asleep.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 February 2022 23:03 (two years ago) link

new song is fine but nothing to be excited about, but that's also how i felt about the singles from the last album and the rest was much stronger

ufo, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 08:12 (ten months ago) link

New song is so similar to 2017 album in production and effects that it could have been discarded material from those recording sessions. Not complaining at all, though, and looking very forward to the new LP.

Seconding that. The only other band of their time that has had as equally a monumental second act like this has been Suede.
