They're ALL delightful profiles. Even the NME one.
"We forget that we have needs because we’re so artsy-fartsy and higher-conscious. But it’s like, no bitch, you need water and you need sunlight and you need rest – just like this fucking cactus.” Lizzo gestures to a cactus on the table between us. “This cactus might not be making a fucking hit song, but this cactus is chill and doesn’t have fucking anxiety. He’s not stressing himself out over no bitch-ass fuck-boys, you know what I mean?”

Kept reading people trying to push Tierra Whack as the “new” Missy but Lizzo makes way more sense as the substitute, she’s bombastic and fun in the same sort of way Missy was.

better way*
As far as Lizzo making a big pop album goes, this is a really damn good one. The songs are good, the production is minimal and surprising at times, in all the good ways (where what I heard of the previous record felt overstuffed and too bland for her). Idk, the review feels dismissive of the basic premise of the record and doesn't really get across how well-executed it is.

― GDPR vs GAPDY (DJP), Monday, 22 April 2019 20:20 (four years ago) link
The review seems pretty even-handed to me. Shoehorning Stacey Abrams in is dumb; someone should have cut that bit, but Pitchfork's editing seems kinda hands-off (the number of typos that get repaired in reviews as the day goes on is evidence of that). But the quoted rap lyrics are terrible - they do read like something an SNL writer would have Elizabeth Warren rap from a podium. And the general thesis - "the music can feel like a means to a greater end" and the description of it as "empowerment-core" - is an accurate reflection of the pop landscape in general. That's what the industry is selling this year.

Woke up feelin' like I just might run for PresidentEven if there ain't no precedent, switchin' up the messagingI'm about to add a little estrogenBuy my whip by myself, pay my rent by myselfOnly exes that I care about are in my fucking chromosomesI don't really need you, I'm Macaulay Culkin, home aloneBad bitch, diamonds in my collarbone (Yee, yee)Buy my whip by myself, pay my rent by myself
Here. by comparison, is a verse from "All of the Lights"
Something wrongI hold my headM.J. gone, our nigga dead!I slapped my girl, she called the fedsI did that time and spent that breadI'm heading home, I'm almost thereI'm on my way, headed up the stairsTo my surprise, a nigga replacing meI had to take 'em to that ghetto university (all of the lights)
Are these both examples of "bad" lyrics? Is one worse than the other?
― GDPR vs GAPDY (DJP), Monday, 22 April 2019 21:10 (four years ago) link
Saying "this sounds like something SNL would have Liz Warren rap in a skit" completely ignores the context and sentiment of the verse and, interestingly, erases exactly the persona Lizzo is projecting onto the verse in order to make an entirely bullshit point. She is not literally talking about running for President and it's wholly disingenuous to make that comparison when the review knows damn well that the line is about self-belief and self-confidence.
Meanwhile, Kanye is rambling about how Michael Jackson's death made him beat his girlfriend.

Yes. "messaging"/"estrogen" is a terrible rhyme, and so is "chromosomes"/"Home Alone." Kanye West is just a terrible lyricist, period.
Is one worse than the other?
Yes. Kanye's is worse. But that's to be expected. Lizzo has "Juice" and "Good As Hell," both of which I like a lot, so she can do better than this.

Also, sometimes bad Kanye lyrics are the best Kanye lyrics.
"president/precedent" is pretty poetry-slammish imo, which is not really my thing, but "estrogen/messenging" is a genuinely terrific off-rhyme. I like the x's in the chromosomes line though that's partly because it brings back fond memories of the first time I heart "Prophets of Rage." The bit about rent by myself etc. is the sort of lyric I connect with and feel a lot, it's so naked & real to me, lyrics that talk about how good it feels to put food on the table always get me. but I think most critics in 2019, when they talk about lyrics, are engaging "the narrative," you'll excuse me, not the lyrics.
― she carries a torch. two torches, actually (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Monday, 22 April 2019 21:27 (four years ago) link
estrogen/messenging is a pretty cool slant-rhyme, actually, and inseparable -- like all lyrics -- from the vocalist's delivery.

my reaction to this record on first pass was that shes exceptionally talented, but a few of the song types felt a bit "this is the amy winehouse type song; this is the bruno mars type song;" of major label A&R ... but I also have not spent enough time w her work to know whether or not there's a thematic connectivity that makes these costumes serve a wider narrative, & if that wider narrative is interesting, etc. ... that said she's such an evident talent that I can see really getting into a stage of her career where she starts leaning into the personal, idiosyncratic etc.

i mean, i dont think this is something that a critic (or critically thinking listener) can really get prescriptive about, i'm more theorizing a suspicion abt what lizzo project I'll end up drawn to personally than telling her what kind of music she should make ... rap music for me is partly abt small-frequency idiosyncracies of narrative style, of word choice, of flow & the subtle ways artists weave together a persona & style and how those two interact ... shes more of a pop artist so I'm not like shocked her music isn't as concerned w this

complaining about algorithms is the new rockism, and I'm not even being remotely facetious, all the same arguments have been ported over
anyway a) this album is good but not my favorite by her, so much of it feels like it's 75% there; b) I didn't view the review as mean in the slightest, the tone was very much "I like this artist but not this particular album, so I'm going to go slightly out of my way to temper every criticism with a comment about how talented she is, in the futile hope that this will placate the stans." or maybe I'm just projecting because I do that a lot in reviews

Natasha Bedingfield is just a highly tenuous and random name to drop in 2019 (seriously how many readers would even remember her?) And putting her in this context, especially up against Aretha, is always going to look like you're ladling on the damnation and sprinkling on a tiny bit of faint praise.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 23 April 2019 08:00 (four years ago) link
Also I don't think it's controversial to suggest that the boundaries of what does and doesn't constitute 'good rapping' (or good rap lyrics) have become so elastic over the last decade or so that it's OK to raise an eyebrow when a writer or publication chooses to start enforcing them in some cases and not others. And to interrogate the reasons for that.
FWIW I don't actually enjoy Lizzo's music that much and haven't felt the urge to hear this yet - but the review doesn't read to me like its meeting the music half way. It might be trying to meet the artist half way, or the message, or the fans, but that's not quite the same thing.

it needs to be acknowledged tho that the fixation on algorithms and pop music is an outgrowth of the fixation on algorithms and our every day lives in general. radio programmers weren't organizing our friendships or news in the mid 80s. it's a relevant conversation your points notwithstanding

also for all the handwringing about how algorithms and cultural cartography and ad placements are affecting our relationship w pop music..... lizzo isn't popping on any charts

I guess the album was number 1 on iTunes but who knows what that means anymorebut yeah I really agree with everyone that Lizzo is an EXTREMELY weird artist to hang the algorithms have changed music argument, she's had a very traditional career arc building up little by little over 6-7 years through working, touring, steady releases until signed to a major, tv and festival appearances, placement in tv and commercials, making music videos etc....I'd argue her arc honestly could have been about the same 20 years ago

The album is currently #1 on iTunes and #12 on Apple Music in the US, so it will probably debut quite high on the Billboard 200 next week.

i've heard "juice" on one of the adult r&b stations here a couple times. (it's #28, down from its peak at 26 but still bulleted, on that format's billboard chart.)
the same station has played an ad for the album plenty of times tho. i noticed the same kind of ad for janelle monae's album when it came out, so i assume that's the kind of thing a label will do for an artist with a new album when their single isn't very far up the airplay charts yet. ("i like that" from janelle's album did end up being a big hit at that format, but not until like 6 months after the album's release.)

Has anyone else seen a small segment of Black Feminist Twitter getting mad at Lizzo because she trademarked the lyric "I did a DNA test and found out I'm 100% that bitch", which came from a random person's 2017 tweet then got turned into a meme, which is how Lizzo saw it and where she lifted it from (and apparently gave credit back to when asked about it) but didn't give credit back to the woman who originally tweeted it because... Lizzo didn't know this woman existed when she wrote the song?
me, seeing that yet another Black woman ripped the words of a Black woman creative on twitter and leans into defensive gaslighting rather than admitting they made moves to profit from IP they didn’t create: pic.twitter.com/TlxiI5hF5A— ashley yates (@brownblaze) June 25, 2019
For context, before I saw this I also saw the same segment of Twitter dismissing her as Black Music For White People, which IMO is standard "black people being shitty about black people with ties to Minnesota" bullshit

Beyoncé appeared to leave Lizzo off the list of musical icons she references in her song, “Break My Soul (The Queens Remix).” Videos recorded of the concert show the singer repeating Erykah Badu’s name four times at the time Lizzo would typically be called out. fun story I have a friend who moved to Detroit about 10 years ago who actually met Lizzo on a dating app. obviously she wasn't famous back then but I remember him telling me about her, like she sent him a bunch of bedroom recordings and videos. I remember watching some of them! clearly she was talented but it blew my mind to see her become actually famous a couple years later. unfortunately they didn't really jive so they stopped talking after a couple of dates. feel like I should check in and see if she ever made him get freaky with a banana or whatever.

In 1990, 16-year-old Garcia met 32-year-old Prince backstage in Barcelona after he saw a tape of her dancing. After she graduated high school in Germany at the age of 17, Prince became her legal guardian.[14][4] Upon moving to Minneapolis, Prince and members of his team helped set her up with her own apartment. "At first, I stayed at the Sofitel, then they moved me to a nice little prairie house at the Country Suites, but I couldn't even make a cup of tea there, so they got me an apartment and rented furniture," she said.[15] When she was 19, Prince instructed her to get on birth control thus beginning their sexual relationship.[4][16] After a four-year courtship, they married on February 14, 1996.[17]

― Murgatroid, Thursday, 3 August 2023 17:47 (seven months ago) link
no one here made that list, calm down. of course it's cherry picked to make it look worse. still, the statement stands that, were i a celebrity, i would definitely not want to be publicly linked with those names in 2023.

point being that hiring a defence lawyer, any defence lawyer, will come with these kind of associations, there's no way around it
― Murgatroid, Thursday, 3 August 2023 18:10 (seven months ago) link
p sure the average defense lawyer doesn't provide concierge legal services to celebs

obviously tons of celebrities use lawyers like this and tons of celebrities do stuff like this, and certainly this lawyer is probably very goodthe problem for Lizzo it's hard say oh well she's just doing what celebrities do when a huge part of her whole thing (I'd say equal to the music) is that she wasn't a typical celebrity, she was better, kinder, empowering, etc. that's a big part of how she presented herself and her appeal.it's not like pre-Amber Heard, people were like you know who's the best, not at all sketchy dude in the world? Johnny Depp

i kinda sometimes find the "positive energy" qualities that are praised in a lot of celebrities to be at best neutral traits. sometimes there are displays of suffocating positivity that are a result of this weird symbiotic relationship fans have with celebs who love basking in adoration, and who feed off it. and anything that pierces the illusion or might make them feel disempowered from their status as the lord or lady of good vibes is going to cause them to reveal themselves.

It's really easy to not hire Bill Cosby's lawyer. just sayin.

ultimately some tweets about how your lawyer defended cosby & johnny depp are a small tax to pay for an amazing lawyer

i don't see how, if you're a celebrity being accused of sexual abuse, it's really easy not to hire the lawyer who got the most flagrant and heinous celebrity sexual abuser out of jail. seems like the obvious move
― flopson, Thursday, 3 August 2023 19:04 (seven months ago) link
If you’re trying to stay out of jail, sure. If you’re trying to beat a civil suit and continue on with your lucrative career, scorched earth might not be the best option.

cosby's PR obviously beyond habilitation but in the depp case it seemed like the legal defence was successful at turning the media narrative in his favour too
― flopson, Thursday, 3 August 2023 19:19 (seven months ago) link
to be fair, Lizzo and Depp's "brands" (I hate using this term but w/e) are a teeny bit different, also the latter has decades more of artistic goodwill/experience
― Murgatroid, Thursday, 3 August 2023 19:25 (seven months ago) link
singer isn't a trial lawyer he had nothing to do w/ the cosby trial and from what i can tell his involvement in the heard/depp trial was tangential, largely related to stuff he had done in the past representing depp (and heard when they were together) during various legal issues. he's attractive to celebrities bcuz he offers two services in one -- representation in civil litigation and being the kinda PR crisis manager who calls journalists up and threatens to sue them if they print a story in a certain way. he seems to be a very good litigator ... i'm more dubious that the crisis managing stuff is very effective tho i'm sure he's gotten stuff removed from stories on more than his fair share of occasions. perhaps his tactics will backfire on lizzo but i tend to think being associated w/ him won't effect her public image beyond the next 48 hours once the world moves onto another story, and if he gets the dancer suit dismissed or settled for little money it will prob be worth it for her
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 3 August 2023 19:58 (seven months ago) link
it is funny to think of her management team imploring her like "hire marty singer he's the best he's represented everyone in hollywood at some point" & then her waking up to a bunch of tweets being like "lizzo hires bill cosby and johnny depp's attorney"
