is that from the GQ story? the line that caught my eye (aside from the single tear anectdote) was the charming:

Occasionally, City Dollars threw some singles at the naked woman standing in front of us, the way an old man might absentmindedly feed some ducks the crust of his sandwich.

definitely beast mode, best trap release I heard in a very long time in no small part due to Zaytoven, guy is a bonfide legend.

grant holt (prettylikealaindelon), Friday, 10 July 2015 18:20 (eight years ago) link

yeah Beast Mode is by far my favorite of these. Monster has some songs that feel like a chore to me, and 56 Nights overdoes the "Commas" siren.

some dude, Friday, 10 July 2015 20:32 (eight years ago) link

beast Mode is obv the worst Imo, songs don't cohere all the time, get kind of annoying, no song as good as march madness or trap gentlemen

Voted 56 Nights

"Peacoat" and "Real Sisters" aren't even my favorite songs on Beast Mode but they disprove the idea that it doesn't have standout songs like the other tapes

its obvs v cornily written but ill take willfully naive over act like you've either been to a strip club or heard rap music before every time, also it was just interesting because it was about something, attempted to encounter a culture where it is at

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 July 2015 03:48 (eight years ago) link

i like the production on 56 Nights, but Southside is not the most versatile producer and it kinda feels like they go back to the "Commas" well a lot. Zay has a much wider range of styles on Beast Mode.

some dude, Wednesday, 15 July 2015 05:06 (eight years ago) link

idk some of those beats are pretty memorable to me and the sound uniquely fits the subject matter, plus with it only being 9 songs it feels more like a specific palette as opposed to "i only have one idea"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 July 2015 05:24 (eight years ago) link

does the tape even follow the 'concept' at all outside the opening skit and the title track? it seems like the other songs could've been on any tape

some dude, Wednesday, 15 July 2015 05:35 (eight years ago) link

Looks like Trap Niggas is on DS2. Good choice.

Beast Mode is just as much an in-the-zone tape as 56 Nights imo - it's just more diverse and colorful. Feels like both Future and Zay are spreading their wings a little and are enjoying each other's company.

longneck, Wednesday, 15 July 2015 06:58 (eight years ago) link

echoing all the beast mode/zaytoven love. for me, it's beast > 56 nights > monster

the first time i listened to 56 nights, future did the "coolest dj in the world" escomoe tag himself and for whatever reason i could imagine him saying "...whatever the fuck that means" right after. and on the very next song, he did. the food i was eating started tasting really sour.

"blood on the money" is like in top 3 or so future tracks in this whole run since monster imo

marcos, Thursday, 15 October 2015 14:55 (eight years ago) link

after several months of m/l continuous listening to all four monster and beyond future projects, i'd say beast mode def has the most interesting production, 56 nights and DS2 are most successful at being coherent wholes and sustaining moods throughout (esp. DS2), monster has some of the highest heights and is the most emotionally resonant overall

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 15 October 2015 15:13 (eight years ago) link

i agree with all that actually

marcos, Thursday, 15 October 2015 16:26 (eight years ago) link

actually i might say beast mode is more cohesive than 56 nights

marcos, Thursday, 15 October 2015 16:27 (eight years ago) link

ds2 starts off great, sags a little in the middle imo, but has a really good closing stretch (fwiw i have the non-deluxe version that ends w/ blood on the money). def has a very sustained mood throughout though

Really grateful for everyone's best of upthread. I've been playing these on shuffle for a few months but I've been having mixed feelings about this stage of his work. Both Future and Young Thug seem to have left behind the fast chatting bangers (Same Damn Time, Treasure etc) and gone for this reflective, smoothed out, more consistent but ultimately less hooky sound. Listening to these favourites put into a playlist is bringing it all home though - Just Like Bruddas is fantastic, as is March Madness and several others.

No love for Thought There Was A Drought though? I love the way 'gucci flip flops' seems to drip and drop over the beat.

xpost - i dont care at all about future's tortured soul either. i know people like noz like to claim drake is self serving/self congratulatory, and future's narcissism is more genuine, and so genuinely tortured that he can barely contain his self loathing, but they both just seem two sides of the same self consciously pained, slightly boring, self-pitying, but ultimately shallow (and sometimes repellent - though not as much a ty dolla sign) persona. i prefer future when he just gets on with making bangers like most of whats on DS2, where the im so drunk/sad quality of his voice is couched in not-so sad-sack beats. i dont care to hear him trying to make ballads that might be 'honest' but just reveal someone quite odious. that aside, i think the second half of 56 nights is pretty fantastic, no compadre especially.

"future backlash in full swing smh when did ppl forget how to feel"

lol really I want to like it more, whenever something reaches that level of acclaim/popularity I feel I'm missing out on something if I'm not feeling it as much. And with Future I'm a fan, it's not like select other rappers where I'm just curious if their new stuff'll win me over.

nova, Tuesday, 22 December 2015 02:29 (eight years ago) link

tbh i'm surprised there hasn't been more division over future's direction; i know the romantic space balladry wasn't the sum total of his work previously but so much of his reputation was built on people buying into it, and this nihilistic unpleasant new future doesn't just contradict it but actively seeks to kill it

i think i'm more into future's latest music because it doesn't ask us to care about his soul, it's just tunnel vision numbness. i think i was too cynical to fully buy into romantic future even if he's now in the face of it more indefensible

^THIS.

ive never been as invested in the future mythos or persona as a lot of people have been, so perhaps that lack of attachment prevents me seeing a certain progression, or important disparity, but i had difficulty buying the romantic/softer future cos the sadness seemed to largely just be sadboy brags. eg. "Live a rich nigga life, I’m just being honest" - oh poor you, future, singing the rich-rapper blues. not sure why/how im meant to care that much really. but i can see why critics love to go to town with it.

StillAdvance, Tuesday, 22 December 2015 10:15 (eight years ago) link

when future's rapping over some seismic juggernaut (eg no compadre or most of ds2, which i would wager is as a *whole* better than the individual mixtapes, good as they can be, no matter that mixtapes may seem the purer representation of what he does), rather than faux-crying, his obnoxiousness hits a more satisfying/suitable, less jarring tone than one where its asking me to sympathise with him (even if that juxtaposition - intellectually at least - admittedly makes it more interesting).

StillAdvance, Tuesday, 22 December 2015 10:18 (eight years ago) link

"no compadre" is sooooo good, agree that DS2 >>>> mixtapes because it works better as a coherent flowing whole regardless of whether individual highlights are better

also think "the percocet & stripper joint" is one of DS2's weakest moments, really boring that so many critics homed in on it and only really works as a bonus track; it's not that future can't move me, it's just that sadboy brags pale beside how hard eg "blood on the money" hits

cher guevara (lex pretend), Tuesday, 22 December 2015 10:29 (eight years ago) link

obv a rapper whose whole thing is to tell you how much pain he is in is diff from the average rap image. but it seems like superficial over-determined shtick (you get more gravitas and real conflict in a song like tupac's pain than the entire honest album). but i guess its proven to be critical catnip (see also: drake's whole career).

also, future is/was good at showing what an asshole he is, which i know his fans like to use as a sign of how 'open' and 'real' he is, but im not sure he ever really shows you his real vulnerabilities, he just shows you what a c**t he can be. perhaps thats brave, or perhaps it just shows someone who doesnt really deserve our sympathy. but then i suppose thats a prob i just have with a lot of his peers, like dream, ty, drake, etc, much as i like their music.

of course hes not the only asshole. but supreme assholism is a trope that seems to have been particularly popular as of late between weeknd, ty dolla sign, etc etc. im saying i like the music, im saying future is a great rapper, but yes, the sympathy point does hold as he frequently appears to be inviting me to sympathise and indeed empathise with his fallen/tragic/woe-is-me/so-tortured-he-just-wants-to-escape-from-it-all demeanour.

obv i dont need to hear Real Vulnerabilities in every song i hear, but for someone whose fans seem to make this claim (some quotes from the p4k review of ds2 - "a redemption story for a man who is certain it’s too late for his soul to be redeemed"... "never ashamed to confess his depression or infatuation"... "Future thumbs through blood-stained bills, reminded of the life from which he ascended but can’t ever really escape, as much as he may have tried.") of him as making beautiful emotional music (im sure noz writes something to that effect in the latest wire), i think it is okay to maybe want to discuss the issue of how vulnerability is presented in his music. i find future's vocals the most interesting thing about him, more than anything he has to say tbh, hes someone who desperately wants to communicate how out of control he is, how sad, how tragic his life is, how yes, VULNERABLE - he is. i love the grain of his voice tbh, its his greatest asset, but often it also seems like hes trying too hard to come off as pained (ie nearing the point where it becomes shtick).

lag∞n, Friday, 29 January 2016 17:03 (eight years ago) link

I relistened to all the mixtapes after Purple Reign dropped and have thoughts

Monster: The highlights on here are great, second half of "Throw Away" (I know you could say it's not complete without the first half but it's a bit of a dirge IMO,) "Hardly," "Codeine Crazy." "After That" is a banger and reminds me of when I thought Wayne was rebounding until he put out three worthless projects last year. The first two songs are terrible though, "Radical" in particular. Actually this is the one I didn't finish all the way through originally so it was cool going back and finding a handful of dope songs.

Beast Mode: I like this almost all the way through but mainly on a solid, not-great level. "No Basic" is a cut above the rest though I think.

56 Nights: I get why this is seen as the best one and the siren drops are just a repeating producer tag, the beats are pretty varied within its template. But idk, to me it's kinda dreary besides "March Madness." In a certain mood I could maybe see feeling this more.

It's not so much that I think he's better/worse at one or another sound, but I remember playing Pluto a bunch when it dropped and while it's got it's flaws I miss some of the brighter sound it had overall. It's not necessary, plenty of the best songs from last year go for a bleak feel and succeed, but when they don't it's a little drab/monotonous.

i don't think my problem with purple reign or evol is really qualitative so much as just a SURFEIT of future. i'm a fan of the nihilistic tunnel vision but there's no reason for this much material to have been released, who the fuck needs that much future in their lives? at this point it's not showing me anything i haven't heard from him and the quality of the songs/beats would need to be amazing rather than fine to transcend that.

I actually like Purple Reign better than EVOL so far, but I've only listened to the latter twice. None of the songs have connected like "Perkys Calling" or "Purple Reign" have with me, though "In Her Mouth" indeed bangs.

When Future gets enthusiastic in conversation, which isn't often, the music lurking in his drawl comes out. "They raising them. They young. Fresh. Partying till six in the morning. They're doing that shit every night."

i liked this line:

At one point in the profile, Future is talking about the possibility of settling down, but he might as well be talking about his music: “Why fix something if it’s not broke? If I break it, and I try to fix it again, it might not be the same.”

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 17 February 2017 13:09 (seven years ago) link

lol the first three and "poppin tags" are my favourites plus "scrape". there are some cool moments on it but it's more treading circles than honing to me, it's neither elevation nor advancement and the emotional impact is diminished after the 84392892147th mixtape/album in the same vein

lex pretend, Friday, 17 February 2017 13:11 (seven years ago) link

xxp how did u ever engage w/ him without embracing the emptiness

even his greatest romances held their depth in ephemerality not timelessness

r|t|c, Friday, 17 February 2017 13:17 (seven years ago) link

there was always emptiness but it had a counterweight in a certain optimism, the desire for revelation and light. That dynamic was what defined him and which made embracing the emptiness - as part of the truth but not the whole truth about human existence - appealing in the first place.

too soon to tell but HNDRXX may be his best album. the production has a post-disco richness that, paired with his return to emotional vocals and singing, really really work. lex and everyone who have been bemoaning 'monochromatic-nihilistic-drugs-man Future will be pleased

flopson, Monday, 27 February 2017 17:56 (seven years ago) link

wait I like monochromatic nihilistic Future way better than mumbly romantic Future

I'm not especially interested in this quantity of any type of Future or in checking this out yet

"use me" huh this one is really good

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 27 February 2017 18:04 (seven years ago) link

I will, I'm not avoiding it out of principle or daunted by volume, I'm just tired of wading through so much filler bc Future can't be bothered with quality control or editing

lex pretend, Monday, 27 February 2017 18:04 (seven years ago) link

Naw deej's taste chess is off in this case, trying to get a foot in on the backlash before this gets wildly overrated. but it is that good (imo)

flopson, Monday, 27 February 2017 18:04 (seven years ago) link

The stretch from Damage to Fresh Air is about as good sequence as future's put on tape, imo. There are a few other highlights throughout, but it tapers off a bit in the second half until the Rihanna song. Overall, it's a very welcome change in direction for Future, who, as much as I love him, really needed one

neva missa lost, wednesday nights on abc (voodoo chili), Monday, 27 February 2017 18:27 (seven years ago) link

I do agree that he shouldn't be making 67-minute albums (not should almost anyone really), but there's plenty of material to do a killer 45-min edit of

When you're as popular as Future is are there good commercial (if not artistic) reasons for just flooding streaming services with as much material as you can? I mean three albums in as many weeks feels a little excessive but if there are enough people who are going to play the shit out of all of them...

Matt DC, Monday, 27 February 2017 19:24 (seven years ago) link

I've got as far as 'Incredible' so far and I'm loving this. I lost interest in Future when he stopped putting the sugar in with the sleaze, and this has a shitload of both.

cn kinda understand the ~future has no personality~ argument but ultimately its just rap fan bingo imo, which is a lil funny since when he first came out everyones argument against him was that he didnt check the good rapper box and he was just a new tpain or something, ultimately his music just has a ton of emotional resonance and im not sure how u separate that from personality, tho admittedly its not usually how rap works, i do have sympathy for deejs complaints against some of his modes tho personally success future is my least fav

On the self-titled, think a certain template has to be great for you to be mining it over and over, and his isn't. Also figuring the rappity rapping side of him isn't one I necessarily care about.

I don't miss "sensitive" Future so much as I think his tracks used to have a little more life, including the amped up ones.

"Sorry" is great, certain other songs from that sound like obvious/cheesy pop grabs. Will check the whole album though

future x metro album is pretty good. "like that" is getting the buzz, "type shit" has travis and carti, but my fav is "fried," which has some residual pluto (meaning his major label debut album) energy

two weeks pass...

part 2 out today, again pretty solid front-to-back. it's not hndrxx, but the main part of the album doess lean more into future's warbling melodic side (really love "mile high memories," "drink n dance" and "beat it," all not coincidentally co-written by bobby raps). the final 5-6 songs is separated into a 2nd disc, and is a conscious attempt to recreate the vibes of monster. and it mostly works!
