I was the #1 vote for Recurring, Just ahead of Lazer Guided melodies, glad to see it place in the top 5. Love the breadth of styles on it; Sonic at his most pop-friendly, Jason basically making murky sketches of musical ideas that would fully fleshed out on LGM.

Also glad to see Perfect Prescription get #1. It's the best representation of the Pierce/Sonic partnership, seeing as they had already stopped talking to each by the time Playing with Fire was recorded.

More on the Rugby font. I used that to do a t-shirt for my son, changing the Take Me To The Other Side image to have his name on it in place of "Spacemen" and "side" to "slide." Anyway, went to have it professionally printed for fun, and they wouldn't do it without consent from the copyright holder. I emailed Sonic via his website, and got a very fast, very nice reply granting permission. The t-shirt turned out great. So thanks!

Soylent News Service (contenderizer), Friday, 6 March 2015 22:21 (nine years ago) link

"Don't Just Do Something" and "The Straight and The Narrow" were my #2 and #9 respectively. They're probably the most singable songs that Jason has ever written. There's plenty of black humour in the lyrics and he somehow comes off sounding anthemic while also invoking pity. There's a lot of depth there that he never came close to approaching in early SPZ songs (e.g. "Lay Back In the Sun", which is straight up "drugs are cool"-style anthemic, to name just one of countless examples).

Live versions of "Don't Just Do Something" on the 2001-2 tours were just about the greatest thing ever, with the final section building and building up to the finish. I get a lump in my throat just thinking about it.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 6 March 2015 22:26 (nine years ago) link

(youtube links are messed up there btw - its the Straight and Narrow for both)

Οὖτις, Friday, 6 March 2015 22:30 (nine years ago) link

agree that that's a fitting tie re: the LICD tracks (there is one song on LICD that's even better which I assume is going to place but we'll see)

Οὖτις, Friday, 6 March 2015 22:32 (nine years ago) link

Although I didn't vote for it, it's nice to see LICD get a bit of a critical resurrection here. It's funny to think how Amazing Grace was considered somewhat of a return to form after LICD, when in retrospect it's probably the worst Spiritualized record.

klonman, Saturday, 7 March 2015 00:03 (nine years ago) link

Οὖτις, Saturday, 7 March 2015 00:41 (nine years ago) link

resulting post (rogermexico.), Saturday, 7 March 2015 15:55 (nine years ago) link

Although I didn't vote for it, it's nice to see LICD get a bit of a critical resurrection here.

I'm still disappointed. The lead up to it was terrific: Jason fires the band, poaches Julian Cope's metal/Hawkwind group, talks about twenty minute krautrock jams, and then Mimi Parker guest on vocals. Instead it was a hour of mope. I'm glad "Rock And Roll" was shoved off onto a b-side because its one of his worst songs, if not, the worst to use "rock and roll" somewhere in the title.

Also: Will Let It Come Down be a Be Here Now or an Urban Hymns?

Οὖτις, Sunday, 8 March 2015 03:07 (nine years ago) link

I'm always a bit confused when people say LICD is mopey. SPZ were always kind of mopey, I mean, didn't LAGWAFIS have "Cool Waves" and "Broken Heart" on it? If it's really about being a downer, musically, then LICD can rock out too -- "The Twelve Steps", "Out of Sight", "On Fire". I think it really comes down to favouring one approach over another -- free jazz/improv squawking and long jams, or full-blown Spector. In terms of lyrical subject matter I don't think LICD is too different than most other SPZ albums, although the lyrics themselves are far better than anything he'd written up to that point.

"Anyway That You Want Me" was my #1. It was partly a sentimental choice -- the first SPZ song I ever heard, and I was completely blown away.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 8 March 2015 07:10 (nine years ago) link

I just don't like Spiritualized v much. In S3 the 'downer songs' it actually leads them v non-rock paths (at times I feel like Revolution is the weakest track on Playing with Fire, although of course its an absolutely brilliant cover).

Yeah, what I miss from early spiritualized is that the downer songs went on some non-rock paths as well; there's a lot of Steve Reich minimalism and new age ambient vibes on LGM. They were starting to shed that style already on Pure Phase, however (perhaps non-coincidentatally related to the departure of Sean Carruthers?).

With regards to LICD, it's my favorite of the post Ladies and Gentlemen albums (sans Sweet Heart Sweet Light, which I admit I haven't given a good listen) because there are some new unusual ideas being thrown around there for a Spiritualized record...I mean "Out of Sight" has seventh chords ffs! My issue with it and with most later Spiritualized is that Pierce's vocals are upfront and unadorned, which really isn't playing to his strengths.

Fun fact: "Anyway that you want me" originally written by Chip Taylor aka James Voight aka Jon Voight's brother.

"Come Together" may be the most overrated SPZ track. There's something very ordinary about it, like it could have been recorded by a hundred other bands.

I didn't expect to see three LICD tracks in the top forty (even if they're all fairly low) ... actually four tracks if you were feeling generous and wanted to tack on "Lord Can You Hear Me", or even five tracks if "Out of Sight" shows up later.

ugh yeah, Will Carruthers not Sean Carruthers. Although I like the songwriting better on LGM, the band is really on fire on Pure Phase. That double-time Jam at the end of "Good Times" is something else. It's a sharp contrast to when I saw the band Summer of 2003 and they were awful. They played like they were hungover from a night of doing ecstasy in which nothing of note happened. This was Field Day Fest in a rainy June in Giants stadium. Beck apparently broke his ankle or something dancing to Blur's set and I got spared an hour of mopey Sea Change songs. Elliot Smith played a muffled set in which he forgot a few of his songs halfway through (this was a few months before his death). My jam band friend hated everything except a young My Morning Jacket, which is so completely appropriate. Radiohead headlined and they killed it, which made me all the more disappointed in Spiritualized because I had heard both bands were neck and neck when they were touring together in 1997.

Had a v profound moment in college where I was walking listening to it really loud and it was about to rain but it was SO DARK AND GREY but for like several minutes on end and a torrential downpour was so imminent (like you could see it several blocks away) but instead there was just a humid stillness and it took forever to actually start raining and when it did the sky just opened instantly

I've seen them so many times on so many tours I'd be hard-pressed to pick a "best" - although often whatever album they were promoting at the time was often completely unrelated to how well they performed on any given night.

Voted for Come Down Softly to My Soul. Hits similar pleasure points as I Believe It (which I foolishly forgot to vote for), and it satisfies the gear nerd in me with that amazing Vox Continental sound...about as good as the continental sounds outside of a Fela Kuti record.

Was never big on Things Will Never be the Same. The recording drags a bit to me, and I'm not really a fan of Pierce's occasional attempts to do snarly 'tough' rock vocals. This live version from Spacemen's 2nd Euro tour sounds pretty lively though (at about 11:20): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxrrL95TLj8

I'm not sure why Jason never attempted any more multipart 13-minute epics after "Feel So Sad". You'd figure he would have at least given it a shot in the LICD era ("Won't Get To Heaven" isn't long enough and is the weak link on LICD). Even though it wouldn't have fit with the ambient whooshiness of LGM, it takes guts to leave something as good as "Feel So Sad" off your debut album.

"OD Catastophe" was my #3 and my highest ranking S3 song. The vocals in the third verse coming in raised one octave is some "Heroes"-level drama.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 15 March 2015 03:26 (nine years ago) link

Ha, I forgot about "Cop Shoot Cop", although it's structured very differently from "Feel So Sad". I guess I was thinking more along the lines of multi-part epic = e.g. "Don't Just Do Something" with a second coda and another eight verses, not a seven minute song padded with seven minutes of noise.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 15 March 2015 07:12 (nine years ago) link

Just wondering, have the votes for songs that have both Spiritualized and Spacemen 3 versions been combined together?

As the 13 minute version of Feel So Sad is Spiritualized but the YouTube link above was for the S3 version so I assumed that was what people had voted for.

groovypanda, Sunday, 15 March 2015 07:41 (nine years ago) link

I was wondering about that too.

I hate to admit that I've never understood the love for "Recurring", except as a preview of the much better music they would make once S3 officially split up.

Yes.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 15 March 2015 18:39 (nine years ago) link

Only exception I made was separating "Sound Of Confusion" from "Walkin With Jesus" because it was an intentional separate vote.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 15 March 2015 18:42 (nine years ago) link

xpost

As the guy who voted "Recurring" #1, my love for it is due to my preference for bubblegum pop and R&B/gospel Spacemen 3 over the minimal Stooges thing. Recurring hits that spot the most (and really it was basically a three-way tie between Recurring, LGM and PP for me, just went with Recurring for sentimental reasons because it was the first album by S3 I bought and really listened to.)

I think Sonic's side is as good as anything he ever did, and while Jason's is weaker, it's still got Feel So Sad, Hypnotized, and Feeling Just Fine. Also really like what Carruthers and Refoy brought to the table on Sonic's side (bassline on I Love You, guitar on Why Couldn't I See).

Kids! Listen and learn as man of action Jason Pierce “pierces” together another one of his immortal rock classic Spiritualized anthems. Admire his skill and craftmanship as he weaves his magic to produce exactly the same song which he has been putting out for the last ten years – from the most basic ingredients!
SCENE: A hushed studio in north-east London lit only by crimson lava lamps. Jason “Piercing” Pierce sits crosslegged on the same carpet which George “Harry” Harrison used to record “Within You Lord My Piggies Pass” with a sitar in his lap which he may one day learn to play. He lays the sitar down carefully and picks up his dobro Stratofendercastpaul 1948 spat-upon-by-Gram-Parsons vintage guitar-shaped thing.

Behind him are seated his band of hired agency hands (contract-only, won’t complain about pay) keen with anticipation for the latest unformed outpouring from his personal Erato.

He solemnly strums a C major chord in adagio tempo, modulating to an E major chord, and then back again. The bass joins in, reproducing precisely the bottom note of each of these chords. After five minutes the drummer joins in, beating solemnly on his solitary tom-tom in the exquisitely pre-post-minimalist style of the Velvet Underground, whose song “Heroin” sounds nothing like anything Spiritualized have ever recorded, for legal reasons.

At eight-and-a-half minutes the mouth of Jason “Donovan” Pierce is pregnant with expiration of his unfettered emotional Camelot. He can bear it no more and begins to intone solemnly (not at all orgasmically):-

“Down. I’m comin’ down. The only way is up. But I’m goin’ down. Down. Down. Oh, my Sweet Lord. There’s blood on my tracks. I’m runnin’ low on my smack. I’m comin’ down. As opposed to sideways. Thinkin’ of those lazy hazy crazy days. To leave my lover there must be 50 ways. The tracks of my tears. Holdin’ back the years. Tears for souvenirs. But tears are not enough. I’m lookin’ for some hot stuff. Baby tonight. Wanna feel alright. The heat is bendin’ my spoon. I’m on the dark side of the moon. I can see the girl from Mars. Playin’ my ten guitars. Never gonna give you up. I’m like a lonely pup. In a Christmas shop. Dancin’ at the hop. But I’m comin’ down. The drugs don’t work. Where’s Captain Kirk? A love supreme. Strange Brew by Cream. She’s got Bette Davis eyes. You’re the devil in disguise. My camera never lies. True love will never dies. My shit’s takin’ an awful long time to cook. She got sexy eyes like Dr Hook. I read it in a book. Knight’s castle to rook. You made me realise. Baby what a big surprise. The girl who lives on heaven hill. Next door to Barnacle Bill. I’m feelin’ oh so fine. Just like it was 1969. And I’m comin’ down no more. Gonna knock on the green door. ‘Cos I’m goin’ high. High in the sky. Up where we belong. You can tell everybody that this is your song. Whoops, this ain’t Moulin Rouge. The nearest tube is street called Goodge. I’m getting’ high! With my American Pie!”

The band suddenly erupts into a feedback-laden climax. Enter the London Community Gospel Choir, their faces beaming with joy as they think of making even more money out of singing dumb whitey public school shit.

“OH HAPPY DAY! OH MY SWEET LORD! OH RELEASE ME! WE ARE THE WORLD!!”

Repeat for 12 minutes, then add Terry Edwards and bloke who plays sax on Stereolab records to echo the primary two chords of the song precisely, and then indulge in some desultory free-form “freakouts” (would like to do “Ascension” but “David” Jason Pierce has an eye on Steve Lamacq’s playlist. In any case he doesn’t know what “Ascension” sounds like, having bought it second-hand in 1994 but never having played it).

Just as the whole stew is about to boil over, Jason “Connery” Pierce adds the icing on the cake. He stops the whole ensemble to whisper:-

“Just say no to drugs. ‘Cos baby it’s tragic. But just say yes. To boogie woogie piano magic.”

Yes! It’s Jools Holland to play the band out with some goodtime rolling boogie-woogie piano magic! Fade out: “AbbbbababaBlueberry! Hill! Sam! Brown! Acoustic!” et fucking cetera.

Thought "200 Bars" would be higher!

It would have been but I've just noticed I somehow deleted it from my ballot when I was arranging the tracks in order.

Also thought How Does It Feel was a cert for Top 3

More people needed to vote to break some of these ties.

it's not that stuff I don't like is showing up or something (all these songs are good to varying degrees) just that I had no idea anyone would rate Shine a Light as number 1, for example. or that Feel So Good was some kind of standout track.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 19 March 2015 17:29 (nine years ago) link

TBF, when LGM was first released "Shine A Light" (especially live) was the stand-out track for me.

I think "Medication" was my highest-ranked Spiritualized track. I think the original single (with the Peel of "Feel So Sad") is their best release.

No other love for Billy Whizz/Blue 1 then?

Love the stoned vibe on that track (which, admittedly, is not a particularly unique vibe when it comes to Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized)

1. Spiritualized - Shine a light
2, Spacemen 3 - Big City
3. Spacemen 3 - Take me to the other side
4. Spacemen 3 - I Love You
5. Spacemen 3 - Feel So Good
6. Spiritualized - Angel Sigh
7. Spectrum - How You Satisfy Me
8. Spacemen 3 - Come Down Easy
9. Spacemen 3 - Come Down Softly to my Soul
10. Spacemen 3 - Feel So Sad
11. Spacemen 3 Walking with Jesus
12. Spectrum - I Just Drifted Away
13. Spiritualized - I Want You
14. Spacemen 3 - Transparent Radiation
15. Spacemen 3 - Why Couldn't I see
16. Spacemen 3 - Feeling Just Fine (Head Full of Shit)
17. Spiritualized - If I were with her now
18. Spacemen 3 - When Tomorrow Hits
19. Spiritualized - Broken Heart
20. Spacemen 3 - Hypnotized

My rationale for putting Shine a Light number one is that it's...pretty great? The build up to the freak out in the end is very satisfying, the best Jason has ever pulled that approach off in his many attempts in Spiritualized.

Great poll, Elvis T!

Strange results though -- two-thirds of the #1 votes were for songs that finished outside the top ten. OTOH, there's a sizeable increase in the total number of voters for everything in the top five, so it's hard to claim that there wasn't a clear consensus in the results.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 22 March 2015 14:25 (nine years ago) link

Pretty sure we need more than 20 votes to get any kind of consensus, but I do like that there is a variety of #1 votes.
