great stuff so far! Nice to see the side projects getting some love

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 22:43 (nine years ago) link

Shame about the paucity of ballots, but this is turning out nicely, and I'm glad to see that a couple of my more left-field picks got another vote here and there (hello "Catch A Keeper," "Roto-Rooter," and "Shine-O-Myte"!).

Like Cosmic Slop, I turned in a full 100-song ballot. My self-imposed rules were probably more stringent than most, but they're consistent with where I've long defined the boundaries of what constitutes a P-Funk record- every track had to have some involvement from George Clinton even if that only meant a nominal producer's credit (I made an exception for the Sweat Band - produced by Bootsy, featuring several long-time P-Funk members, and released on Clinton's short-lived Uncle Jam label - and a couple self-produced Bootsy tracks from when he was still very much in the P-Funk orbit). Hence there's no Zapp (Bootsy coproduced their first record, sure, but they were never really part of the P-Funk mob despite Roger's marginal contributions to one or two Funkadelic tracks) or Mutiny (who have a more legitimate claim to the collective mantle). I guess there's no reason for me to mention this except that I still find it kinda weird that anyone considers Zapp to be P-Funk. Great band, though.

Chuck Eddy. He's a people. (thewufs), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 01:11 (nine years ago) link

Could only vote for 40 tracks...lack of time I'm afraid...sad to see "What About It" so low down the list...love that groove!

X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 02:04 (nine years ago) link

Just catching up.

Three songs in my top 15 already placed that didn't get a single other vote. Not surprised that Singing Another Song didn't as it's a bonus track on Up For the Down Stroke. Such a catchy song. Soul Mate and I Misjudged You are the other two I had up there that I'm a little more surprised about. I love their ballads and these are two of the very best. I'm surprised Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication is so low. I just assumed all the songs off Mothership would be really high.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 02:44 (nine years ago) link

Oh I had One Fun at a Time in my top 10 too. Seems like I have quite a strange taste in their stuff. I'm already feeling like I might be the only person that didn't vote for a song that could well at the top of the list.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 02:46 (nine years ago) link

I had no idea there were cd-only bonus tracks for any of the parliament albums. None of my cd copies have any!

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 02:46 (nine years ago) link

Soul Mate is good but I subbed it out on my ballot for other stuff I liked more from the same album.

you might be alone on I Misjudged You tho. Never dug that one.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 02:47 (nine years ago) link

I'm not sure which issues I have of the Parliament albums now (In a different country to my CD collection right now) Think that most of the ones I have do come with a couple of bonus tracks. Another bonus track I had high on my list is the upbeat version of Baby I Owe You Something Good. It totally transforms a good song to an amazing one for me.

135. Parliament - (I Wanna) Testify (98 points, 1 votes)

I think some people's votes were for the original Parliaments version but I went with the later, more "canonical" one

How many votes did Testify get? Surely more than 1?

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 04:27 (nine years ago) link

Hey Shakey - shouldn't there be two votes for "One Fun at A Time"? Kitchen Person confirmed that he had it in his top 10, and I had it at #43. I just checked my ballot, which you confirmed you had received. Seems like the points total for that track, then, should be at least 157 (90+67), no?

Chuck Eddy. He's a people. (thewufs), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 04:32 (nine years ago) link

XP I had "Testify" @ #3. I didn't specify the version, although if I had, it would have been for the original (the remake is hot tho). I've already placed a couple other "one voters"--"Children of Productions" & "There Is Nothing...".

Don A Henley And Get Over It (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 04:48 (nine years ago) link

I voted for the parliaments version and it was very high on my ballot #7

I misposted about this. There was one vote for "(I Wanna) Testify" and and *6* votes for "Testify". I didn't combine them. Maybe I should though (I doubt that many people really meant the original Parliaments version but I could be wrong...?)

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 17:07 (nine years ago) link

I did!

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 17:09 (nine years ago) link

Hey Shakey - shouldn't there be two votes for "One Fun at A Time"?

*sigh* There's actually three votes for this - all the entries looked identical but for some reason the pivot table in the spreadsheet didn't group them together correctly. OK so I'm gonna combine all the Testify results, fix this and then post a revised list shortly, hang on...

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 17:10 (nine years ago) link

altho maybe I shouldn't re: Testify, sounds like you guys know what you were voting for...

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 00:53 (nine years ago) link

Some excellent songs today. You Scared the Lovin' Outta Me is yet another ballad that I had pretty high on my list.

Just listening to The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein and thinking Children of Productions should have been higher on my list. Love those trumpets so much.

Happy to see Let Me Be get another vote. I feel like Chocolate City is the most underrated P-Funk album overall. Ended up voting for almost all of it.

I Just Got Back (From a Fantasy..) was my number 15. Maybe their prettiest song? Did I mention I love their ballads? Obviously that means I had Whatever Makes Baby Feel Good very high in my list.

Apparently I had Funkin' For Fun at number 69 on my list. Way too low. I think I always forget what a great album Clones is.

zapp i mean

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:03 (nine years ago) link

I can see taking issue with Zapp's broader catalog but that song in particular is a) unbelievably super-classic and b) has George and Bootsy's hands all over it as much as any other P-Funk side project

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:04 (nine years ago) link

it counts for me. the album was meant to come out on uncle jam til roger screwed em over

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:06 (nine years ago) link

i know that some of these polls have participants who know nothing about the band but join in to learn (but not this time?) if they had done I wonder if they wouldve have voted the zapp higher?

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:21 (nine years ago) link

Hi, part of the problem here. I merely know 8 albums well, all under the name of Parliament or Funkadelic.

Except for Miles Davis or some other jazz or classical legend, I can't imagine starting a sentence with "I merely know 8 albums by...."

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:25 (nine years ago) link

...but it's fun to learn new things, and two new things I've learned today are "Electro-Cuties" and "Smokey."

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:27 (nine years ago) link

Anyway, so long as we don't have the P-Funk equivalent of "Deacon Blues" or "Debaser" winning it's all good right? (ducks to avoid flying objects)

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:28 (nine years ago) link

What is P-Funk's "Sway"?

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:30 (nine years ago) link

A "Sway" hasn't won a poll since "Sway".

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:33 (nine years ago) link

P-Funk's "Sway" is "Can You Get to That"

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:47 (nine years ago) link

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:50 (nine years ago) link

I think I know what you're talking about...it was a very prominent sample pretty recently. No idea who the artist was, though.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:54 (nine years ago) link

sorry, using internet properly now: indie college rock radio hit by Sleigh Bells, "Rill Rill" 2010, built around acoustic guitar bit from 'can you get to that'

(the reason I thought shoes were in their name was because of that album cover with the blood on the sneakers)

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:55 (nine years ago) link

i almost wrote lollage cock, what a disaster that would have been

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:56 (nine years ago) link

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:56 (nine years ago) link

Oh wait, it was used in an ad not too long ago, wasn't it? Really pissed me off, since it would've been a nice payday for George, but he's still getting screwed out of royalties from the Westbound stuff.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

Let's look on the bright side though, at least whatever bastards own the rights to the Westbound material got paid!

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:58 (nine years ago) link

you should read George's book

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link

finding a P-Funk song that's been sampled in an indie rock staple or a tv commercial though

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link

yeah the stuff at the end of George's autobio where he has a deposition from Boladian's assistant testifying that Boladian cut+pasted/forged his signature on documents is just nuts. George disavows any involvement in all the lawsuits that have been pursued over the years on behalf of Bridgeport Music.

xp

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link

Eh, I didn't know about George's contributions to "More Bounce." I always assumed that his quotes of the song on "Loopzilla" were just creative revenge for Roger Troutman bailing on the Uncle Jam Records deal - the last brick that toppled the whole P-Funk empire in 1981. My bad, shoulda voted for it.

Love the album cover - I've got a t-shirt with the image printed on it - but to me Uncle Jam Wants You is almost a glorified single, with "(not just) Knee Deep" the only first-rate song amidst a handful of mediocrities. "Freak of the Week" is decent, but still, I think overall it's the worst Funkadelic album (of the original 1970-1981 run, I mean). I reserve the right to revise that opinion on re-listening.

Chuck Eddy. He's a people. (thewufs), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:25 (nine years ago) link

I'm just glad to see that 3 people other than me also voted for "Hydraulic Pump" - it's kind of an obscurity, so I wouldn't expect much support from casual fans. But it really needs to be heard in its complete 12" version, not the weirdly gutted edit that's on Urban Dancefloor Guerillas. Thankfully, that version is on Spotify, so I've added it to the updated playlist for this poll. The real glaring absence on Spotify is any of the Warner Bros. Funkadelic - you'll have to use the YouTube links Shakey posted to hear "Freak of the Week," "Hardcore Jollies," and eventually "One Nation Under a Groove" and "Knee Deep," not to mention that has placed or will place off my favorite P-Funk record, The Electric Spanking of War Babies.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 23:34 (nine years ago) link

Does he actually own the rights to them at this point? I knew he was talking about regaining control of those copyrights after this 35-year term had passed, but I didn't know whether he had successfully won them back at this point as he mentioned that Armen Boladian and his people were actually falsifying documents and erasing the original authors or copyright holders from filings with the US Copyright Office. I may be getting all this mixed up, though. If he does indeed have the rights to the Warners Funkadelics that's awesome, and I don't begrudge him at all for withholding them from Spotify, which as we all know perpetrates another kind of thievery.

Just going back to their weakest albums. I know this will be a really unpopular opinion but Free Your Mind is my least favourite Funkadelic album. I'm not sure why but I've just never been able to get into it. For Parliament I'd agree that Gloryhallastoopid and Trombipulation are both kind of weak. Osmium is a little patchy but still decent. The six albums after that are all amazing.

X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Friday, 5 December 2014 17:36 (nine years ago) link

conciliatory point 1: In all seriousness, somebody who wants to, with plenty of time on their hand, should at the end tabulate a 'ultimate funkateer' songlist based only on people who sent in a 100 song ballot. I'd pay attention to the results, and go listen.

not so conciliatory point 2: Personally I don't think poll choices based on some preference you just developed in the last week should be considered as more reliable than stuff you've known for years. My 20 song ballot is based on some seriously road-tested preferences --- like, I KNOW why I voted "Presence of a Brain" because that song has stood the test of time in a way that most other "social commentary songs" have not.

Rollingstone.com has a 10 things we learned from the George Clinton autobiography up now. This one is astounding, as it could be my favorite Funkadelic guitar solo that's not Maggot Brain:

Hit It and Quit It
One of the classic Funkadelic guitar solos wasn't cut by the band's Eddie Hazel but by a strung-out white kid who wandered into the Hollywood Sound studio in L.A. and said he would play on a track if Clinton gave him 25 bucks. Clinton liked his attitude, and let him play on "Get Off Your Ass and Jam": "We set him up, started the track and he just started to play like he was possessed. He did all the rock & roll that hadn't been heard for a few years, and he did it for the entirety of the track. Even when the song ended, he didn't stop." An astonished Clinton paid him $50, but neglected to get his name, so he was never able to use him again or credit him in the liner notes.

P-Funk is amazing but so are XTC. I voted in both polls (67 songs in XTC and 100 in this) Even though I voted for more in this one for some reason I found putting my P-Funk list together way harder. Parliament and Funkadelic are bands I've played a lot in my life but I might always struggle to remember their song titles or which song is from which album. This was a hard poll in the same way the disco and Motown ones were.

Electric Spanking is so good- such a detailed and nuanced production on that one.

It's murky - kinda sounds like it was recorded inside an oil drum, but I like that about it. The whole vibe of that track is druggy, ominous, like a There's A Riot Goin' On for the Reagan era. Very apropos given Sly's involvement with P-Funk and with George's pharmaceutical dalliances at the time.

"Atomic Dog" placing anywhere outside the top 10 is ridiculous. Maybe the weirdest P-Funk hit, certainly one of the most influential, and it's funkier than shit. Over half of the poll respondents didn't vote for it - what the hell??

My worst-case scenario for this poll (it's already happened elsewhere): first 3 Funkadelic albums dominate the top 20, edging out the mid- to late-70s classics. I mean, I knew most of the early 80s stuff didn't have a chance anyway, but I thought everybody loved "Atomic Dog."

I didn't vote for anything after 1981, P-Funk ended with the last Funkadelic album for me, so no solo George.

XXP - Yeah, Computer Games is a solo album in name only. It's absolutely P-Funk canon, but to each his own, whatever.

Chuck Eddy. He's a people. (thewufs), Monday, 8 December 2014 22:33 (nine years ago) link

It was difficult enough without having to factor in GC solo (and Zapp, for that matter).

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Monday, 8 December 2014 22:34 (nine years ago) link

yeah the '81 cutoff strikes me as p arbitrary - things had started to unravel w lawsuits, record deals collapsing, etc. which is why George couldn't use the Parliament or Funkadelic names anymore iirc - but everybody on Computer Games is a P-Funk regular. Bernie, Bootsy, Eddie, Junie, Gary Shider, the Brides, Maceo are all on it

anyway

"Cholly" is the shit. Never understood the love for "Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?" - dozens of Funkadelic songs answer the titular question better than that overlong, half-limp Junie leftover.

Love "You and Your Folks." One of the few from the aforementioned first three Funkadelic albums that placed high in my ballot. There's one other that ought to go top 10 - and it's not "Maggot Brain."

Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock is one of those songs that seems to pop into my head all the time. Brilliant song. Another one I thought would be easily top 10. No idea what's going to make the top 10 now apart from an obvious few.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 8 December 2014 23:12 (nine years ago) link

The first three Funkadelic albums are not my favourites. Much more of a Parliament/mid period Funkadelic fan.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 8 December 2014 23:13 (nine years ago) link

I don't think the top 10 is going to surprise anybody tbh

Οὖτις, Monday, 8 December 2014 23:28 (nine years ago) link

XP to Cosmic Slop - I don't dislike the first 3 Funkadelic records at all - plenty of tracks went on my 100-song ballot, and the self-titled is a damned impressive statement of purpose - but I think they suffer from an inflated reputation, especially Maggot Brain. George Clinton was still getting his shit together at that point, so there's less wit, less focus, more noodling and bullshit doomsaying. Despite the individual brilliance of Eddie and Bernie and Tiki Fulwood, the band isn't all the way on the One just yet. They're really good, sometimes great records, but how anyone but the "Disco Sucks" crowd could prefer them to, say, Funkentelechy and the Placebo Syndrome is just beyond me.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 01:05 (nine years ago) link

And...since Atomic Dog already placed, I'm guessing there will be no Free Alterations, which I should have had in my top 5

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 01:07 (nine years ago) link

Anybody remember that SNL clip where Stevie Wonder is doing a British accent and praising Atomic Dog for being meaningless, as opposed to the preachy music of Stevie Wonder? It was kind of funny, but coming from a guy who had recently spawned "Ebony & Ivory" and "I Just Called to Say I Love You"....

Gee, I would have put Atomic Dog as #21 on my 20 song ballot to please Chuck Eddy. That song is swell. Another one of those I figured people would just vote for anyway.

The Goose in the top 40! Aside from 'you & your folks', my highest place yet --- and the last of my "eccentric" picks I'm afraid. My #1 comes so perfectly right after that on "up for the down stroke" yet many many placements on mix tapes shows it as playing well with others: "I Can Move You if you let me," which is one of their most succinct statements, should have been a radio hit. Every time I hear it I go around singing "but you were somewhere sharing fantasies, normal and/or otherwise"....

Seriously though Chuck, how can you claim the grooves on the great Parliament albums so obviously beat the elemental perfection of the groove, the concept, the sheer audacity of their let their be light moment: "Mommy, What's A Funkadelic"? Those background singers and the near hysteria of their singing along with that main line.

It's hardly like early Funkadelic is typical acid rock- most of which is comparably rhythmically challenged, to put it mildly.

All right, I'm placing my last hopes on "I Wanna Know If It's Good To You" because, well, I want to know if it's good to you? That song stands on the line between groove and chaos as well as anything --- that counterintuitive keyboard bit with the echoey phases section at the end justs sends it into the stratosphere. "Hit it and quit it" is another great one to be sure. But if "Tear the Roof Off" wins that will be okay too, because that was the very first one I heard, knowing nothing, as a ten year old AM radio listener: what IS this?

Vic Perry, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 02:02 (nine years ago) link

I'm not actually Chuck Eddy, btw. Hey, I voted for "Mommy, What's a Funkadelic?" I even quoted it in my master's thesis!

Why do I prefer classic Parliament? It's denser - from the verbal and musical allusions to the arrangements, there's just more there there. And it moves me physically - I'm not saying the grooves on the Bootsy-era stuff are deeper, but they've got more angles and kinks in them for sure. Whether you prefer music to zone out or shake your ass to is down to personal quirks of taste, I know, but if you ask me the best of the mid-to-late 70s stuff is both more eccentric and more accessible than the earliest Westbound stuff, and that's no mean feat. Maybe I'm wrong; I wasn't born until 1982, so I have no reference point for just how strange (or how conventional) any of the classic-era P-Funk records sounded when they were released.

Chuck Eddy. He's a people. (thewufs), Tuesday, 9 December 2014 04:10 (nine years ago) link

You & Your Folks was my #2. The groove is so hard, the singing is great, and that drum sound is what made me think "Funkadelic is going to be one of my all-time favorite bands" from the first time I heard it.

The one I thought would poll higher was 'Sir Nose D'voidofunk'...I love Bernie Worrell's playing on it...it's his magnum opus...and that bassline is possibly my favourite ever...

is that not only in the big eoy poll? Its something I've always encouraged.

except that they always wait until the top 10 is obvious before guessing rather than doing so at the beginning

"I'll Bet You" a.k.a. "I Bet You" was the early one I thought should make top 10. That's my jam. I can't knock "Maggot Brain," the song - it's a brilliant performance - but it's never moved me as much as it should. I realize that's probably my problem and not the song's, and my impression of the Eddie Hazel original is unduly affected by the fact that I heard, and loved, the live Michael Hampton version on One Nation years earlier. Still voted for it, just not in the upper reaches of my ballot. I say "Maggot Brain" or "One Nation Under A Groove" takes the top spot on the poll.

Nice to see the love for Standing on the Verge of Getting It On, which really is one of their peaks - it's among the handful of P-Funk LPs that smokes from start to finish.

Damn, a whole bunch of my top ten has already placed. I voted Groovallegiance at number 3 and "I Got a Thing" at Number 5.

Can't believe "Hit it and Quit It" missed the top ten.

The following albums placed every track in the poll results:
Funkadelic "Maggot Brain"
Funkadelic "Standing on the Verge of Getting it on"
Parliament "Up For the Down Stroke" (most surprised by this one)
Parliament "Mothership Connection"
Funkadelic "One Nation Under a Groove"
Parliament "Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome"

A couple others would have placed all their tracks ("Let's Take it to the Stage" in particular) if people were a little more fond of solo Bernie Worrell magnum opuses lol.

I did think it was weird that the highest placing non-Parliament/Funkadelic track was Eddie's "California Dreaming". I mean it's good and all but that seems sort of wrong to me to place it above Bootsy's best, to say nothing of Atomic Dog or More Bounce to the Ounce.

this may perhaps be an unpopular opinion but when it comes to the Warner Bros Funkadelic albums I think they suffer (moreso than the Parliament records) from the lack of the original Parliament vocalists. Those guys had a grit and old-school gospel/doo-wop flavor that complemented the darker, grimier and just outright weirder lyrical concerns that typically got reserved for Funkadelic records, and I don't think any of the new guys that came forward really got that.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 22:41 (nine years ago) link

yeah plus later funkadelic in a kinda way suffered from trying to sound more like a guitar version of parliament. still great records though.
But the early line up was the best.

Great work Shakey. Thanks for all the effort.

I voted for 100 songs but didn't find room for Maggot Brain.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 23:10 (nine years ago) link

Great rollout, Shakey! Probably the least-predictable poll I've seen so far.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 9 December 2014 23:17 (nine years ago) link

I assumed from the outset that Maggot Brain would be number one, with Flash Light and One Nation and Cosmic Slop also in the top 5. I had assumed Atomic Dog would be top 10 too but oh well

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 23:21 (nine years ago) link

yeah i expected that to be top 5. thought because atomic dog was a big hit and sampled that it would do very well.

Great poll, Shakey! Thanks for doing this.

I feel like I need to (further) clarify some of my comments from yesterday regarding the early Funkadelic records. I actually think the Westbound Funkadelic records, taken as a whole, are stronger than the Warners Funkadelics. I just think the Westbounds hit their stride with Cosmic Slop. After Funkadelic moved to Warners, it was Parliament that made the more cohesive records, but I don't think that's necessarily down to the vocalists - it's more that Funkadelic started to lose its own distinct identity. The only one that's nearly as dark and scabrous as the Westbounds is Electric Spanking, which you can dance to besides.

Excellent poll! Thanks for running it. Forever it will live in the Chocolate City of my heart.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 10 December 2014 00:24 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, great job, Shakes. "Can You Get To That" getting to no. 4, wow, did not see that one coming! I can't even remember where I placed it. My no. 1 was "Chocolate City", lyrically (and vocally, George was never better) just the perfect combination of funniness, profundity and absurdity, and musically just not like anything else, lots of great funk bands around at the time but none of them could have come up with anything like "Chocolate City" - they didn't have Bernie + Bootsy for a start.

Know where you're coming from but listening to "Getten to Know You" from Clones today and, Jesus, that is a great vocal from Garry Shider - and I don't even think I voted for that track - Garry and Glenn Goins were both such great singers.

My no. 1 was "Chocolate City"

For years, I had 3 note piano riff as my cell alert on my old motorola phone. It was perfect.

My biggest regret now is that I didnt put Free Alterations from Computer Games higher. That is one of my 3 or 4 favorites now, but I wasn't fully aware of its greatness when composing my ballot.

Thanks very much for hosting this huge poll, Shakes.

my ballot - for the sheer joy of wasting time I added where my 20 picks placed:

1 I can move you (if you let me) #62
2 Mommy what's a funkadelic #48
3 I wanna know if it's good to you? #18
4 placebo syndrome #58
5 funkentelechy #21
6 hit it and quit it #14
7 presence of a brain #71
8 unfunky ufo #44
9 back in our minds #96
10 free your mind and your ass will follow #16
11 friday night august the 14th #47
12 maggot brain #1
13 stuffs and things #61
14 the goose #35
15 all your goodies are gone #66
16 give up the funk #15
17 one nation under a groove #3
18 mothership connection (star child) #8
19 eulogy and light #93
20 you and your folks, me and my folks #26

for your pleasure in irritatingly subjective nerd analysis I added the following essential info ("essential" in the meaning implied by the album title The Essential Billy Joel):

average placement of my top five: 41
average placement of my 6-10: 48
average placement of my 11-15: 42
average placement of my 16-20: 29

conclusion: 16-20, with three songs I stuck on to keep it real (i.e. acknowledge the giant faves that continue to reach me....for example, NOT flash light or atomic dog or can you get to that) placed the best, by quite a margin.

HOWEVER! my most verily 5avorite 5ive did 2econd best amongst the 4our groups! This is reassuring. I only want so much mild specialness, not flat out isolation 'n starvation.

The stuff that did worst by a long shot was my almost equally beloved 6 - 10 (but 11-15 would have done the worst without the maggot brain).

I'm looking forward to exploring the picks of those who know enough to make 100 song ballots! Have already been much educated by this poll... And remember, the bigger the headache, the bigger the pill.

Looking forward to reading through this, I've been more than a little busy over the last month or so and I thought I was going to manage to get a ballot in for this (even got as far as drawing up a whole list), but for some reason struggled to get them in some kind of order (there was a lot of stuff to consider!) and ended up missing the deadline. Having a quick glance over the results though, I've no complaints! Maybe it would have been easier to have separate Parliament and Funkadelic polls, but I guess that would have missed the point!

Just finished George's memoir. It was really good. He was much more sensitive & thoughtful than I expected him to be, while still delivering the goods when it comes to anecdotes featuring outrageous behavior.
