vote for the most terrifying gigantic statue of all time

I find it disturbing that for thousands of years human beings have been making enormous effigies of divine, mythical & human beings to loom over us like petrified monsters. As a youth I remember driving into Gateshead at night and seeing the Angel of the North for the first time, ominously rising up over the horizon in the muggy twilight like some triumphantly erect human-messerschmitt hybrid & it inspired a feeling of intense physical disgust, there was something profoundly hideous about it

In this thread we document the most remarkably abominable colossi, recount our encounters with them, express & ponder revulsion or appreciation, & vote on which we find most terrible/sinister/unsettling

does the sight of a faceless cyborg looming on the horizon representing industrialism with fascist zeal not fill you with dread?

ogmor, Friday, 25 April 2014 09:26 (nine years ago) link

there's no medals for being wide though. the angel of the north has a similar pose to the cristo redentor

http://interspacedesign.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/rio-cristo-copa-beach.jpg

of the three statues of jesus in the poll, this is the only one where he is posed to look like a cross. jesus was of course executed on a hill, so he although you could argue he is in a state of perpetual execution, there is also something fairly benign. but maximum looming points for presiding so magnificently over one of the biggest cities in the world

ogmor, Friday, 25 April 2014 09:36 (nine years ago) link

As a huge fan of feeling overwhelmed by looming petrified monsters I wholeheartedly endorse this thread, and will vote for the statue I find most delightful

That Angel of the North picture is quite ominous, but I've never seen it in person. Likewise the giant Dream head in St Helens.

as symbols of man's ugly, hubristic dominance over nature I am more offended and terrified by the motorway in the first picture and the high-rises on the Rio beachfront than by the awesome and exciting statues

here's the Kristus kase Berkat terrorizing the people of manado. this hideous portrayal of jesus as a flying wizard casting some sort of hex over the city for eternity is mb too comical to win the poll, but surely you cannot find him a figure of delight

http://www.democratic-republicans.us/images/volgograd-the-Motherland-Calls-statue-Mamayev-Kurgan-hill-Volgograd.jpg

an armed titan striding across the steppe bellowing is a truly terrible sight to behold. it is unbelievably excessive, & idk what it says about russia to have such a pure & monstrous expression of patriotism

sitting at the feet of the leshan giant buddha would be an infinitely more chill activity. despite its size, being carved out of the rock gives it a sense of intimacy, he's less exposed, his pose is relaxed, & his barely open eyes give him a serene & calming quality. this is my kind of giant statue

ogmor, Friday, 25 April 2014 09:55 (nine years ago) link

the giant buddha of thailand is much less appealing, rising up out of the trees & inviting you to kiss the tips of his freakishly long fingers. are you delighted blandford?

maybe you could say the islamic prohibition on idols stems from a lack of sensuality or unworldliness but I think a god who is totally trascendent, who has 99 names, is a more potent idea. idolatry (shirk) is the single unpardonable sin in islam, because it compromises the oneness of god. there's something sympathetic about that to me

"Napoleon planned many urban regeneration projects for Paris and was particularly fond of monuments to his victories. He wanted to create a significant triumphal structure to demonstrate his military prowess and began the process of designing a 24 m (78 ft) bronze elephant. He planned to use the bronze from cannon captured in battle melted down and recast to create an imposing structure. A stairway would allow visitors to ascend one of the elephant's legs to an observation platform on its back.... The construction work stopped in 1815 after the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo."

to be clear I love all the statues here & don't want anyone to think I was denigrating their contributions. anyway I think the most actually terrifying might have to be either to moai or the sphinx, on the grounds that having outlasted the systems of belief which led to their construction, they have this unknowable ghostly power.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-718a9zXxgNY/UOiN5JnED8I/AAAAAAAAASg/rNvg6myLLMc/s1600/Moai-Statues-Easter-Island-1.jpeg

apparently the moai originally had eyes. can't decide if that makes them more or less creepy. prob more creepy.

The most striking feature, however, is unarguably the towering jolly giant, Gnome Chomsky. He stands invitingly on the hill facing the highway, challenging one and all to come enjoy the scenery, visit the farm, and play a round or two of mini golf.

*Update (as of Aug 2011) Chomsky no longer holds the Guinness World Record. Reiman Gardens in Iowa is home to a Gnome that stands 15 feet tall. Although there is a Gnome in Poland who towers at 18 ft, but unlike Chomsky and the Reiman Gardens' gnome, theirs is made of fiberglass.

still the most terrifying

http://artinrussia.org/wp-content/uploads/original19039207.jpg

i think there's something so fundamentally insane about the eastern front in particular Stalingrad, this army driven east beyond their limits by a tyrant and a large collection of psychopaths, coming up against a deadly winter and an army finally ready and able to destroy them, driven by another tyrant, and by circumstance the battle takes place in a city named after him. this statue comes as close as possible to capturing that insanity, i mean might as well have had a 300 ft tall banshee with a sword leading the charge against the Nazis, it would be only a bit more mad than the reality.

Wat Theppitak Punnaram (White Buddha), Nakhon Ratchasima. The white big Buddha is a impressive 45 meters tall statue belonging to the Wat Theppitak Punaram temple in Thailand, located in Phaya Yen, Pak Chong district, Nakhon Ratchasima province.

I wonder how they decide on the size, like one person suggests 40 meters everybody's v enthusiastic but in comes the new kid HOW ABOUT... forty FIVE!!?? endless applause

Maybe its just a matter of budget

niels, Sunday, 14 August 2016 08:05 (seven years ago) link

ha, well actually ...

The elevation of the statue of 112 meters or 56 Thai Wa above ground level refers to the 56 goodnesses of Buddhism. The total of 1,250 steps of the two paths left and right leading uphill to the statue signify the number of disciples of the Lord Buddha who assembled on Magha Puja Day without prior notice. The height of the statue of 45 meters means the number of years Buddha spent in teaching the people after he had attained enlightenment

pplains, Sunday, 14 August 2016 17:30 (seven years ago) link

If they were using meters as their basic unit of measure, why would 112 meters refer to the 56 goodnesses? And if they were using Thai Wa as their unit of measure, why would 22.5 Wa refer to 45 years spent teaching?

[A]t an impressive 180 feet in height, with a 23-foot nose and 14-foot eyes to match, the monument to Decebalus, the king of the Dacians, is visible from a great distance. (By comparison, the presidential faces depicted on Mount Rushmore reach a mere 60 feet in height.)

Маска скорби "Mask of Sorrow" - a memorial in Magadan, dedicated to the memory of victims of political repression. The central monument is 15 meters high

Authors: sculptor - Ernst Neizvestny , architect - Kamil Kazayev.

The central sculpture of the memorial is a person's stylized face, from whose left eye tears flow in the form of small masks. The right eye is represented in the form of a window with a lattice. On the reverse side is a bronze sculpture of a weeping woman under a non-canonical crucifixion [1] . Inside the monument is a copy of a typical prison cell.

Dignity is a sculpture on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River near Chamberlain, South Dakota. The 50-foot high stainless steel statue, by South Dakota artist laureate Dale Lamphere, depicts an Indigenous woman in Plains-style dress receiving a star quilt. According to Lamphere, the sculpture honors the culture of the Lakota and Dakota peoples who are indigenous to South Dakota.

Not a fan of the rainbow road by the Murugan statue, I’m afraid. We visited a couple years ago, during my honeymoon, and at the top of the stairs are the Batu Caves. The monkeys were incredibly mischievous, it was wonderful. The rainbow road is in keeping with the entire place though, I guess. It has the feeling of a once awe inspiring place that has been taken over by tackiness

re: The Motherland Calls

The sword was originally made of stainless steel, trimmed with titanium sheets. The huge mass and high windage of the sword, due to its colossal dimensions, caused a strong swinging of the sword under the influence of wind loads, which caused excessive mechanical stress in the place where the hand holding the sword was attached to the body of the sculpture. Deformations in the design of the sword also caused the movement of sheets of titanium plating, creating-pitched sound of thundering metal.

The bronze statues or the unreinforced concrete ones near sea level. The typical framework + cladding giant statues will corrode and collapse, the rebar in reinforced concrete corrodes and without maintenance the concrete becomes rubble.

Fortunately, sea level rise is the slowest appearing effect of the long climate crisis. Maybe 1 m this century, 3 or so m every century for the next several millennia. The Statue of Liberty's base isn't crested til late 4th millenium (around the time White Plains, NY is beachfront).

This statue depicts Saint Bartholomew, an early Christian martyr who was allegedly skinned alive. If you look closely, you’ll notice that’s not a robe that he’s holding. It's actually his dissected skin hanging around him. This statute is by Marco d’Agrate, c.1562. pic.twitter.com/wyPnQqbXTu

i had intense megalophobia when i was young, though it's eased a little, now. i can trace it back to playing on a common green in my hometown as a child. there was a welcome sign there, with translations of 'welcome' in about eight different languages. i'd look up at it as a child and the languages just looked... wrong, or threatening. i feel the dread in my stomach just thinking about it. the first time i went to london and came out of a tube station underneath big ben i pissed myself. i wonder what the psychology is behind this. i also grew up in a town about fifty miles south of the angel of the north, but i've never been. i'm trembling thinking about being anywhere near or under it. i think it's the facelessness of it as much as the scale.

Grandpont Genie, Saturday, 9 July 2022 16:55 (one year ago) link

I mean, why not have a sculpture of a woman punching a tree? That would "represent nature and its slow mutilation by humans". Something like this:
https://image.shutterstock.com/shutterstock/photos/157857452/display_1500/stock-photo-stock-image-of-a-woman-punching-a-tree-157857452.jpg

Or a sculpture of a woman slowly strangling a tree, or putting a plastic bag over a tree's head and force-feeding it poppers, or something. While the tree is tied up. Bizarrely, there was a tiny internet buzz back in 2018 about a 10-year-old girl called Evnika Saadvakass, who can destroy very small trees with her fists. The following clip is from 2015. Maths was never my strong point, but I know that 2015 was before 2018 so she would be younger:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS_WMy4T2nU

I realise you sometimes have to break... I mean you always have to break an egg in order to... at some point in the process of making an omelette *an egg has to be broken*. But this sculpture and the shipping crates are doing more harm to the environment than whatever awareness they raise. Unless the argument is that the desert is just a pile of empty nothingness, which isn't true. It's the kind of really bad art that irritates me.

pplains, Sunday, 11 September 2022 03:27 (one year ago) link

Yeah, it's a cool video but the measurements are weird. I was under the impression that the standard way of measuring statue height is to include staffs (staves?) etc but to not count pedestals - I get that would prob spoil the aesthetic of such a video, but not convinced that they've got things right the way they've done it.

Also, I somehow missed that Bolivia ripped off Christ the Redeemer and made a bigger one, and then (not included in that video) Poland ripped them both off and made an even bigger one again!
