From tshat wiki: A commonly reported stimulus for ASMR is the sound of whispering. As evident on YouTube, a variety of videos and audio recordings involve the creator whispering or communicating with a soft-spoken intonation into a camera or sound recording device.[28][16][29][30]

I don't know man. I've had goosebumps or chills, feeling weak in the knees, when hearing a certain person's voice, someone I didn't have a connection with but it was merely because of the tone and pitch of this person's voice?

It didn't give me "brain orgasms" though. Damnit.

this came up in a class I was teaching two months ago; a student had made a piece of musique concrete. after he played it, the whole class was sucked into the vortex going through youtubes of this for about 15 minutes. it's one thing to be sitting at a computer being intimately whispered to, it's another to have it amplified loudly through a class PA and experiencing it theater-style with 20 other kids

it's definitely onto something

two weeks pass...

i was about to start a thread on this, ~whisperers~ i love this stuff. all these ppl practising the art of gentleness, producing these peculiar hypnotic folk noise videos with extreme care. i've had this sensation for years, i remember a childhood piano teacher set them off in a major way, & it's amazing to find this huge online community producing all this stuff. i respond to quite a lot of this stuff, but i love how specific some ppl's triggers are; one of my friends only really gets it w/ paper sounds/page turning. there's loads of things on youtube that border on this too - certain pronunciation videos, games tutorials, hypnosis vids - the format is perfect for it. otoh there's something odd about these extremely meticulously produced homages to the sensory properties of objects/sounds&c., which are then digitized & broadcast to a totally passive audience.

as far as the whisper people go, i have kind of a natural aversion to mouth sounds and when someone whispers in my ear i freak out a little. could never take that sinead o'connor a capella song where i can just hear her mouth and throat making noises. automatic writing DOES freak me the fuck out. but i'm all for field recordings of pencils and marbles. there are certainly a zillion avant garde records and CDs that do similar things and i dig those too. just remember you CAN try that kind of thing at home. anyone can make great ambient recordings with a decent recording device. its fun.

That is very true! When I found out this thing had a name I posted about it on Facebook and a lot of people responded seemingly having a eureka moment, having never though to Google it or whatever. I get triggers less from people talking and more from electrical appliances - hoovers, lawnmowers, hair dryers, televisions on static channels - and a workmate used to really tease me for being a weirdo about it, then he realised why he loves going to the doctor and the barber, because the idea of this ~feeling~ was so immediately familiar when it was described to him.

Is anyone else sort of immune to the videos? I've experienced this feelinf all my life but something about the staged, artificial nature of the videos meant to trigger the sensation falls flat with me. Not to mention a lot of the whisper videos come across as overbearing and downright creepy. It only seems to work for me if it's organic I.E. not made with the specific intent to trigger ASMR.

I swear by ASMR. When I was my mom's caregiver, for the last year of it I was under tremendous stress, so I would rely heavily on those videos to relax me, and now they allow me to get some much-needed sleep and help alleviate these panic attacks I've been getting for the last few weeks. There are two people who do ASMR just *perfectly* for me, Heather Feather and ASMRrequests (Ally), and I subscribe to both of them. It's also weird knowing that this is a relatively new "craze", for lack of a better word, because I was experiencing "tingles" from "triggers" as far back as when I was four years old, back in the early '80s.

Here's one of my favorite Heather Feather videos:

https://youtu.be/mWnpMTCtNSc

And I just adore this one by Ally because it features her character Salmon and I was so very much a Salmon in grade school:

That's because Bob Ross is regarded as being the father of ASMR, and I do remember feeling those aforementioned "tingles" any time I used to watch his show as a kid. In fact, I'm sure so many of his episodes are available for viewing on YouTube because of their popularity amongst the ASMR community, and I know Heather Feather did a take on his show as her character Dark Feather.

ogmor, that's an Ally/ASMRrequests video! She does devote a lot of time and energy into creating all these unique and original characters and even doing different makeup and costuming for each of them. My favorite example of this was her twelve days of Christmas-time roleplaying, where she played a bitchy tailor shop girl, a serious store manager (who had Salmon working for her in a nearly flawless split screen), a sassy tooth fairy type, a goofy candy store employee (that one actually got me to try Toblerone for the first time), and a kind domestic, qmongst other characters. Also, I confess that what I *believe* is her first video, a basic facial care and makeup tutorial, is where I stole my current skin care regimen, except I adapted the specific products to my own facial needs.

Beyond the freak show, I do find this happening to me at random moments. I wonder if it all stems back to something implanted from being told stories as a kid. This woman's voice still does it sometimes:

been watching/listening to a lot of asmr lately, finding a few channels that I like. a good voice and a good microphone are important, but increasingly I think the careful attention and focus is the key element. on one hand asmr is very vivid and crisp and lucid, but, beyond the tingles, it induces this generalised warmth - like your pores are opening up - and your thoughts settle.

seems like a lot of the most prominent asmr people have suffered with anxiety, depression, insomnia, stress or similar problems, and its the therapeutic quality to those videos that I find most appealing. there's something so wonderful and tender about all these people putting so much care and attention into creating something that strangers can use as nourishment

This is interesting - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4380153/

The results of this study suggest that ASMR also provides temporary relief in mood for those suffering from depression, with many individuals consciously using it for this purpose. Individuals whose scores on the BDI suggested moderate to severe depression reported a significantly more uplifting effect of engaging in ASMR than those without depression. Those suffering from symptoms of chronic pain also benefitted from ASMR, seeing a significant reduction in their discomfort for several hours following an ASMR session.

paolo, Sunday, 31 July 2016 11:22 (seven years ago) link

It also turns out that the tingling is a form of synaesthesia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia#Auditory-tactile_synesthesia

In auditory-tactile synesthesia, certain sounds can induce sensations in parts of the body. For example, someone with auditory-tactile synesthesia may experience that hearing a specific word feels like touch in one specific part of the body or may experience that certain sounds can create a sensation in the skin without being touched. It is one of the least common forms of synesthesia.[30] However, many consider the common phenomenon of ASMR (where auditory stimulus or trigger words creates a tingling sensation in the body without being touched) to be a form of auditory-tactile synesthesia, as it fits the definition of sounds inducing physical sensations, meaning that it could be more common than current statistics imply.

At Google BrandLab, we help brands tap into the full potential of YouTube. Many sounds can trigger the calming sensation of ASMR, and brands should listen up. We are not just talking about an enormous engaged audience to tap; we are talking about an enormous engaged audience that is already using your brand. ASMRtists often employ objects, especially food products, to create the tingly effect: crinkling wrappers, chewing candy, cracking open cans. (A search for "beer ASMR" on YouTube returns over 81,000 video results.) Tic Tac, Swedish Fish, and Taco Bell are all brands that make cameos in YouTube creator videos.

KFC has embraced the trend. In this recent YouTube video, the actor George Hamilton, portraying Colonel Sanders, whispers sweet nothings about pocket squares and enjoys the sounds of KFC's new crispy fried chicken. "This is a community that is absolutely infatuated and enthusiastic about the sensorial experience of sound," KFC CMO Kevin Hochman said in The Washington Post. "There's a lot of comfort that's associated with ASMR, and that's what our food delivers."

In 2015, BBDO created ASMR video ads in China for Dove chocolates that were designed to evoke the "tingling of silky smooth pleasure" consumers felt when eating the confections. The films were even put to scientific testing, and the results are being studied by neuroscientists.

Brands don't have to create their own ASMR videos to capitalize on the trend; interested audiences can still be reached. Who in particular? Both men and women are interested in ASMR content, with viewers skewing young—18- to 24-year-olds comprise around half of the interested audience. Most (77%) are also looking at beauty and fitness content.7

Beauty products, in fact, play a starring role in the trend. Makeup tutorials have long been popular on YouTube, but after viewers realized how relaxing they were, many tutorials now double as ASMR videos. Some creators take the role-play approach, simulating the feeling of being in a makeup artist's chair, while others use makeup brushes to create soothing noises. Search for "ASMR nails," and you'll see many creators showing off their manicures as they make tapping and scratching sounds. Even Michelle Phan—the queen of beauty herself, with 8.6 million subscribers and counting—has created an ASMR video.

Perhaps less obvious, a large majority of the ASMR audience also skews technophile and gamer. People interested in ASMR across the web are more than twice as likely to be in the market for consumer tech products like laptops, mobile phones, and game consoles.8 There's even an ASMR gamer YouTube channel. ASMR may be an antidote to fast-paced video games; research has shown that your brain on video games can heighten your senses.

Regardless of how ASMR works, there is clearly a huge, engaged, and growing audience that responds to it. And as a brand, you don't have to "get it" to benefit from it. You just have to engage this unique and largely untapped community in any number of creative ways. Now how does that sound?

"The piece, the artist states, “is like the typical painting lessons of Bob Ross. What I was feeling in the theme of this video is the existential nature of contemporary art (and culture) as well as of artists. There are dynamics of many elements such as absurdity, the bizarre, intelligence, form, seriousness, and creativity.”"

The Bob Ross connection was clear of course, but, yep, I see how this could apply to ASMR more widely after all... the absurdity, seriousness, Thanks ogmor.

is anyone else here able to induce ASMRish tingles at will? I find that if I stand or sit upright while tensing the muscles at the base of my skull, I can send cold shivers down my spine without the aid of triggers. the sensation builds up at the origin point for a few seconds before flowing rapidly down my body, and it tends to be stronger the longer I wait to release it. if my aim is true, the impulse will travel straight down the center of my back, but if I miss the mark, it might only travel the length of one shoulder and arm, especially if my posture is a little off-center.

I've been able to do this since I was a kid, though I can't remember how or when I discovered the ability. it doesn't seem to be a rare phenomenon, since there are dozens of threads on Reddit where someone asks "am I the only one who can do this?" only to learn that 9000 other people have had the same experience. some Redditors draw a distinction between frission and ASMR (even pinning them down to different neurotransmitters), but afaict ASMR is just commodified, AdSensible frission.

because of the above, I find ASMR videos pretty much pointless for the purpose of inducing chills, though the fad/meme/contagion aspect is interesting, and Goodnight Moon's videos are worth watching for the set and costume design alone. cynical cash-in "Pewdiepie tries ASMR for the first time [FUNNY AF]"-type videos should probably die a swift death, though.

I think I am the opposite of asmr people. Extended action/fighting sequences in movies or live sporting events lull me and put me to sleep.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 21:17 (five years ago) link

Just jumping into the fray without having read the thread because I saw the subject title and this is one thing I take a great interest in.

I've been experiencing the ASMR phenomenon for the vast majority of my life; I definitely remember being seven years old and experiencing it from hearing book pages turned in an otherwise quiet library. It's the exact opposite of misophonia, where quiet/otherwise relaxing sounds irritate the listener, and is most probably associated with the phenomenon of synesthesia, which allows one to experience a stimulus via more than one sense, e.g. someone who can taste words and hear colors. Research is underway to explain the phenomenon but I know from my own experiences that I definitely feel the sensations from an ASMR (or similar) video as if someone was actually touching me.

Here are some of the ASMRtists I subscribe to:

1. Heather Feather ASMR (the first ASMR channel I subscribed to but who hasn't updated her channel in a long time)
2. WhispersRed ASMR (sort of an earth mother-y type but without the woo)
3. ASMR Angel (someone I could see myself hanging out with and the reason I got into "Would I Lie to You?", since she was Joe Lycett's guest on an episode of the program)
4. Sophie Michelle ASMR (a kid from my relatively superannuated position, an aspiring actress who's really into role plays)
5. Karuna Satori ASMR (a Pennsyl-tucky high school drop-out who does really entertaining videos)
6. CrinkleLuvin ASMR (perhaps the absolute best medical role play ASMRtist out there, very highly recommended)
7. ALBinWhisperland (slightly problematic past but seems to be fairly well-meaning these days)
8. Olivia's Kissper ASMR (gets a little too hippie-esque but has a good sense of humor)
9. Scottish Murmurs ASMR (well known in the community for her impressions of other ASMRtists; also provides something unique with her lilting Scottish accent)

I also greatly enjoy the occasional FairyChar ASMR video (and yes, I know that's not what she calls herself these days) but haven't watched her in awhile due to the fact I have all those other channels I subscribe to and will make occasional forays into other channels. I know there's a channel called HungryCakes that combines ASMR and mukbang (sp?) in a way that I find comforting and easy to take and I truly dislike the sounds made by impolite eaters, so unless you have the aforementioned misophonia she's perfectly safe to watch.

I'll get back to this thread after I've taken the time to read through it. I really hope none of you went down the stereotypical "ASMR = weird sex thing" route a lot of closed-minded folks utilize to hate on ASMR.

The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 22:07 (five years ago) link

Ok wow, so apparently I posted on here before! My list above ^^ is the most recent list of ASMRtists I'm into, BTW. Also, the way I learned about ASMR was when I was watching Dr. Sandra Lee's early pimple popping videos (I have anxiety-based skin excoriation tendencies that are alleviated by watching them) and found them unexpectedly relaxing; when I read the comments section and saw the delicious sensations I'd been experiencing almost all my life referred to as "ASMR" it was like being given the key to a bottomless treasure chest, because I didn't know the phenomenon had a name. Once I found that out my YouTube watching habits changed drastically and I was able to get a lot calmer, though obviously I still struggle with my anxiety.

The first video Noodle Vague posted on November 13, 2018, is one of my favorite ASMR videos of all time. I don't even know how many times I've watched it because I've lost count, but it's been a great help to me during many moments of mental crisis/anguish. Emma is just brilliant at what she does. Similarly, this video helped cheer me up on the day of Trump's election and is actually the video that converted me into one of Charlotte's (ASMR Angel's) ardent fans:

(I'm sorry, I mean "inauguration", not "election". Emma's video is what helped soothe me after his election.)

(Also, whoops, it was November 13, 2016 that Noodle Vague posted that amazing video by Emma. I'm kinda hurrying right now and making all kinds of mistakes.)

oh man...this^ seems more about fetishisizing mental illness than exciting auditory nerves

How did you come to that conclusion? My thoughts were that since quite a few viewers would have had the experience of having to be admitted to a mental hospital, this would be catering to a part of their reality. I mean, I have some pretty bad mental illnesses myself (at times in the past to the point of incapacitation) and I didn't think there was any "fetishisizing" going on in the video.

The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Thursday, 14 March 2019 17:31 (five years ago) link

I mean...."I need you to relax or I'm going to have sedate you again. Nurse, can you please help me restrain this patient?" "Right now your hands are in restraints, this is for your safety and own own..."

"If you fight me that's going to change the situation" (!!)

heinrich boll weevil (Hadrian VIII), Thursday, 14 March 2019 17:46 (five years ago) link

She's role playing as an intake nurse processing a highly agitated patient. Sometimes people who suffer from mental illness (and I am deeply fortunate not to have ever had it THAT bad) do things that put others or themselves at risk because that's how their illness manifests itself at times of high stress, such as having to be admitted to a mental hospital, and the staff at those hospitals have to prioritize safety over everything else. I would highly recommend you tracking down the 2001 HBO documentary about Bellevue ("Bellevue: Inside Out") to see what I'm talking about. Also, just because the viewer is taking on the role of this highly agitated patient doesn't mean it is assumed they've ever been one. I've viewed RPs where I've been asked to assume all kinds of improbable roles (e.g. a naïve individual seeking revenge against a wicked witch who took advantage of her) so I'm not sure what the objection is with this particular RP.

(FYI, it's very difficult to admit this but I might as well: I have been admitted to a mental hospital after a suicide attempt and I still don't see the problem with that particular video. This was a long time ago and I no longer experience suicidal ideations, FYI.)

The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Thursday, 14 March 2019 18:52 (five years ago) link

Yeah I understand what goes on in psych wards. I’m just saying this appears to be role playing that has less to do w/ sensory response than it does some kind of psychological stimulus.

I’m a little skeptical that psych ward admission/intake + restraints are the sorts of memories someone with a history of hospitalization for acute anxiety or psychotic breaks would summon to feel better.

by the way i tried a pair of these today:
https://www.bose.co.uk/en_gb/products/frames.html

and listening to the above clip (Virtual barbershop) was FUCKING FREAKY. literally a second after i had hit play, even though i knew exactly what i was doing, and exactly what i was about to hear, i TURNED MY HEAD the fuck around to MAKE SURE that the sounds weren't being made by something actually in the room. the guys showing it to me explained that because with the glasses nothing is on your ears, the sounds of the real world aren't getting filtered out, so it's much easier to fool your brain that the recorded sounds are integrated into the actually-existing soundscape. it isn't always what you would want i guess - often it's great to block out the sound of public transportation, etc - but... dawg. and then of course it's a whole nother level with head tracking - you turn your head and the sound of the crackling fire (or whatever) appears to stay in the same place in relation to you...

Hell, I'm hoping Skullcandy comes out with an equivalent product because I find their items to be more within my price range and I already use their wireless headphones on the regular. Wow.
